When bad light brought a premature end to proceedings captain Azeem Rafiq and Ateeq Javid were both unbeaten with half-centuries having guided England out of trouble after they had slipped to 123 for 5.With conditions still aiding the seamers Sri Lanka had to wait until the 23rd over to strike, with Charith Jayampathi snaring Daniel Bell-Drummond for a 32. Having broken the 77-run opening stand Jayampathi burst through with two quick wickets in his next over. He had Joe Root caught for a patient 40 and removed Luke Wells two balls later. With England wobbling on 78 for 3 Lewis Gregory joined Javid for a careful 45-run stand before Chathura Peiris revived Sri Lanka’s fortunes with two wickets in two balls. First he trapped Gregory in front and then had Jack Manuel caught for a duck.Thereafter Javid and Rafiq took control, easing to a 122-run stand in just under 31 overs. Rafiq was the more positive of the two, stroking 12 boundaries while Javid ticked along at his own pace, facing 130 balls for his 79. With the captain at the helm, England will look to push on tomorrow and, weather permitting, build a lead big enough to ensure there is no way back for the tourists.

ECB outlaws double-bouncing delivery

Warwickshire’s plans to introduce some innovation to bowling by using the double-bouncing ball during their Friends Provident T20 game against Derbyshire was quashed by the ECB, which outlawed the delivery

Warwickshire’s plans to introduce some innovation to bowling by using the double-bouncing ball during their Friends Provident T20 game against Derbyshire was quashed by the ECB, which outlawed the delivery. The reported the ECB issued a directive to county coaches and umpires that the ball, if delivered, would be declared a no-ball – despite not breaching the laws of cricket – for it was against the spirit of the game.”Further to an ECB Cricket Committee recommendation, it is confirmed that the practice of bowling a ball that bounces twice should be disallowed with immediate effect. It is considered inappropriate for the image and spirit of our game,” the Daily Telegraph quoted the ECB directive as saying. The idea to use the double-bouncer is the brainchild of Warwickshire bowling coach Graeme Welch. The decision to experiment with such a delivery was prompted by the accidental instance of Derbyshire offspinner Nathan Dumelow bowling a double-bouncing delivery that had then Leicestershire batsman Darren Stevens flummoxed. Though the ECB’s decision would have thwarted Welch’s plans, he received encouragement from the MCC, the guardian of the laws of the game, which declared the delivery legitimate. As a result, the delivery can be used in tournaments like the IPL or the World Twenty20, over which the ECB has no control.”We don’t think it is against the Spirit of Cricket or contrary to the Laws of the game,” the newspaper quoted Keith Bradshaw, the chief executive of the MCC, as saying. “We see it as the same as the switch-hit and unless it changes the balance between the bat and ball we see no reason to change our view.”According to the laws, a ball can be declared a no-ball if it bounces than twice and the umpire deems it to have been delivered intentionally. Law 24 states: “The umpire at the bowler’s end shall call and signal No ball if a ball which he considers to have been delivered, without having previously touched the bat or person of the striker, either (i) bounces more than twice or (ii) rolls along the ground before it reaches the popping crease.”Welch said he was disappointed at the ECB’s ruling and claimed the delivery required skill, just like the switch-hit, pioneered by Kevin Pietersen. The MCC had then deemed the shot legal for the same reason Welch feels the double-bouncer should be allowed. “Not just anyone can do it and it takes skill,” Welch told the , adding the ball was of greater assistance to fast bowlers. “The margin of error is small.”The batsman thinks it is a bouncer and by the time he has realised it is not he has cut down his reaction time. You need a bowler who can bowl out of the back of the hand and bounce it as close as he can in front of him so that when it bounces again it is on its way down.”The trick is getting the pace right on the second bounce. I am disappointed about it [being outlawed]. Batsmen are smacking it out the ground and this is just the way the game is evolving. We are always trying to think of new things. I am a bowling coach and my job is to do that.”

Everton fans blast Kenny v Aston Villa

Lots of Everton fans were critical of the performance of Jonjoe Kenny in their 1-0 defeat at home to Aston Villa in the Premier League on Saturday.

With Nathan Patterson unavailable and Seamus Coleman dropped to the bench, Kenny was left to play at right-back, and he seemed to struggle throughout the game up against both Lucas Digne and Philippe Coutinho.

The 24-year-old lost out on three of his duels and failed to make a single dribble, tackle or cross, while he also lost possession of the ball on 24 different occasions in total, the most out of any of his teammates (SofaScore).

He did not do enough to warrant keeping his starting place ahead of Coleman and Patterson, and Duncan Ferguson now has a selection dilemma to ponder ahead of Everton’s next match.

O jovem Daniel Fuzato é a outra opção.

– O Jailson ocupou a posição por méritos e vem respondendo bem. O Fernando é o segundo. O Weverton é o terceiro nessa hierarquia inicial – disse o treinador.

Journalist discusses big Celtic ‘lift’

Rangers being without several key figures for Celtic’s crucial Scottish Premiership clash at Ibrox is a big boost for Ange Postecoglou’s side, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke.

The Lowdown: Huge game at Ibrox

On Sunday afternoon, all focus will be on the potentially season-defining clash, as the Hoops visit their most bitter rivals.

Games between the pair are always hugely important of course, but this one has extra significance, with Postecoglou’s side just three points clear in the title race.

It is a match that could be decided by fine margins and injuries could be key, injury doubts surrounding key Gers trio Aaron Ramsey, Fashion Sakala and Alfredo Morelos, with the latter now definitely confirmed as out.

The Latest: Journalist on Celtic boost

Speaking to Give Me Sport after hearing the news, O’Rourke claimed that it is impossible to deny that Celtic would be boosted by the absence of key Ibrox stars:

“When key players are missing, it’s always a lift to the opposition when they see the teamsheet, so it does give you a lift in that respect.”

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/celtic-updates-23/” title=”Celtic updates!!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Undoubted positive

This is an undoubted positive for the Hoops ahead of arguably the most hotly-anticipated Scottish Premiership clash in years, with so much on the line at Ibrox.

Despite this, it is still imperative that Postecoglou and his players focus on their own game, however, knowing that destiny is still in their hands and victory would arguably put one hand on the trophy.

Morelos’ absence is arguably the biggest plus point for Celtic, as even though he has not always thrived in the derby the Colombia international is still the Light Blues’ top scorer this term.

Liverpool fans happy at Milner update

A number of Liverpool supporters are happy after journalist Neil Jones claimed James Milner would leave the Reds in the summer.

The 36-year-old has proved to be a fantastic servant for Liverpool since arriving on a free transfer from Manchester City back in the summer of 2015.

Milner has made a total of 272 appearances for the Reds, using his experience to great use and winning both the Premier League and the Champions League.

The midfielder’s current deal expires this summer, however, and it may be that his time at Anfield comes to an end at that point.

That certainly seems to be the opinion of Goal‘s Jones [via Anfield Watch on Twitter], who claims that Milner is ‘expected to leave’ once the season reaches its conclusion.

West Ham alerted to £60m Calvert-Lewin

According to an update by reliable journalist Alan Nixon of The Sun, there has been a development in West Ham United’s search for a striker involving Everton star Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

The Lowdown: West Ham in forward hunt…

Coming a year after West Ham sold club-record signing Sebastien Haller to Ajax, David Moyes is still yet to see a confirmed replacement come through the door at Rush Green.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-latest-updates/” title=”West Ham latest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

That isn’t for lack of trying, as the Hammers and recruitment chief Rob Newman draw up a list of targets, with offers having already been made according to reports.

Sky Sports reported that West Ham made a loan-to-buy bid for Flamengo striker Gabriel Barbosa, news which has since been backed by the player’s own representative, while the Irons are also weighing a move for Blackburn Rovers star Ben Brereton Diaz.

In a surprise update, Moyes and co have now set their sights on an England international.

The Latest: West Ham on Calvert-Lewin alert…

Writing for The Sun, reliable reporter Nixon claimed that Moyes has been ‘alerted’ to the possible availability of Toffees forward Calvert-Lewin, but it will cost them an eye-watering £60m.

The Hammers boss would apparently ‘really push the boat out’ to sign him but Everton’s valuation is currently too high.

Refusing to rule out a move, Nixon believes that West Ham will be right at ‘the head of the queue’ if that aspect of the story changes.

The Verdict: Big claim…

There is little doubt that Calvert-Lewin would be the ultimate centre-forward signing if West Ham decide to make a move, even despite his injury-ridden 2021/22 campaign.

Called ‘sensational’ by former West Ham favourite Tony Cottee, the £100,000-per-week striker scored 16 goals in 32 Premier League starts last term, whilst also averaging more attempts at goal per 90 than any Everton player (WhoScored).

At 24 years of age, Calvert-Lewin also comes with real potential for sell-on value, and his homegrown status comes as another incentive.

However, given that West Ham may have to break their transfer record again to land him, this is a move on which Moyes and Newman will have to deliberate carefully.

West Ham discover Ocampos asking price

According to Spanish source Estadio Deportivo (via Sport Witness), West Ham United may have discovered the price required to sign Sevilla forward Lucas Ocampos.

The lowdown: Ocampos a wanted man

The 27-year-old has previously been linked with a move to Liverpool and Leeds United, having impressed in Spain following a €15m (£12.5m) switch from Marseille in 2019 (Goal).

A recent report from Calciomercato claimed that the Hammers, along with Wolves, are interested in the Argentine winger ahead of the summer transfer window.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-latest-developments-4/” title=”West Ham latest developments!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

A fresh update from elsewhere in Spain has informed Premier League suitors of the potential fee required to land the 27-year-old…

The latest: GSB eyeing lucrative swoop for Ocampos

As per Estadio Deportivo, as translated by Sport Witness, Sevilla are ‘about to close’ an extension on the Argentina international’s contract to extend his stay for a further year until 2025.

The report claimed that the new deal for the 10-cap forward will include a release clause of €80m (£66m).

Furthermore, despite the mention of West Ham and GSB specifically holding Ocampos as a ‘favourite’ to bolster the attack at the London Stadium, any summer exit is regarded as ‘unfeasible’ under the new terms.

The verdict: Sign him at all costs

Equally adept on either wing, the skilful Argentine – who has been described as ‘electric’ by football journalist Fede Praml – would provide an alternative to Pablo Fornals and Jarrod Bowen and therefore would be a smart piece of business from West Ham, even at the mooted price point.

If the Irons are to continue their improvement, adding players of this calibre to their ranks is a must; and with mooted admiration from GSB, the board should be willing to sanction the fee and allow recruitment chief Rob Newman to pursue a possible deal.

So far this season, Ocampos – who has previously likened himself to Cristiano Ronaldo – has scored eight times and provided four assists in 35 appearances across all competitions this term. With only three West Ham players finding the net more regularly in 2021/22, adding a player of his potency seems a no-brainer for GSB and co.
