Hazlewood hopes for Test action

Josh Hazlewood, the New South Wales fast bowler, feels ready to step up to Test level if he gets the chance this summer. Hazlewood is only 19 but has already made his one-day international debut, taking 1 for 41 against England in June, and has spent time with Craig McDermott at the Centre of Excellence during the off-season.With 17 wickets in six first-class games, there is still a lot for him to learn, but McDermott says he has “a truckload of ability”. Hazlewood, who is 196cm, is trying not to get too carried away, but can’t stop thinking about the Ashes.”The way fast bowling is, guys go down with injuries and you can jump up a few places pretty quickly,” Hazlewood said in the Sunday Telegraph. “I’ll get a few opportunities at the start of the Shield season to put my hand up. I’d definitely feel ready if I got a chance during the Ashes. I’ve worked hard in the off-season.”The Ashes is the top of international cricket, it’s in Australia this summer and to think you could be a part of it, it’s pretty exciting, but you try not to think about it too much. You try not to get carried away but you can’t ignore the chance might be there.”McDermott, who made his Test debut as a 19-year-old, has been impressed. “There’s a tremendous future for him, but he’s a big boy who has to take a lot of care with keeping his body fit,” he said. “I’m not going to comment on pecking orders or selections but bowling-wise, with that pace and bounce, it’s all there.”Before Hazlewood gets a chance to play for Australia he has to secure a regular spot at New South Wales, who have Brett Lee, Stuart Clark and Nathan Bracken available following their reduction in international game time. Doug Bollinger and Shane Watson will also be around for at least a couple of Sheffield Shield games early in the summer, and then there is the promising next rung of Mitchell Starc, Trent Copeland and Burt Cockley.Brad Haddin, the New South Wales wicketkeeper, sees a place for all of them in the various competitions. “New South Wales has some great bowlers at the back-end of their careers, but on the same scale we have some young bowlers just starting out,” he said in the Sun-Herald. “And what tends to happen with the younger guys is their bodies don’t quite stand up to the demands of Shield, one-dayers and the other forms of cricket they need to play.”So to have a Stuart Clark, a Brett Lee and Nathan Bracken around is great because they can feed off them for a year. They get enough information from their bowling coaches, so rather than talking to them it’s more a case of learning from watching how those blokes prepare.”

Coutinho can be part of Ramsey development

Aston Villa made the surprise signing of Steven Gerrard’s former Liverpool teammate, Philippe Coutinho, from Barcelona in January, and not only will his talent and ability surely have a fantastic impact on the side’s Premier League season, but he could also become hugely influential to the players around him.

The 29-year-old has already scored for the Villans on his debut in the eventful 2-2 draw to Manchester United at Villa Park last month, where he helped the side secure a point after going 1-0 down in the first half, scoring his goal just 13 minutes after coming onto the pitch in the 68th minute.

One player who also shone in the game against Manchester United is Jacob Ramsey, who not only opened the scoring in the second half for his team but also assisted Coutinho in his first Premier League goal in over four years.

Ramsey has been going from strength to strength at Aston Villa, with the current manager at the club being one of his biggest fans.

Gerrard hailed the £15k-per-week gem “outstanding” following his wondergoal scored against Norwich at Carrow Road in a 2-0 victory, and his progression at the club can only enhance with the arrival of Coutinho, something we saw glimpses of against Man United.

Ramsey has the world at his feet, being described as a “big talent” by scout Jacek Kulig, and as a midfielder, not only having one of the greatest central players to grace the game as his manager, but the opportunity of playing alongside Coutinho who has experience on the left wing and in attacking midfield positions, racking up 102 goals and 75 assists in his career so far.

The £13.5m-rated Birmingham born youngster was instantly put into Gerrard’s Villa first team when he took over in November, with the side now picking up 16 points from just ten games in the league since the Liverpudlian took the reigns.

Ramsey has also offered an attacking output from his position that puts him in the top 18% of Premier League goal scoring midfielders, with 0.23 goals per 90 and an xG of 0.14 per 90 minutes.

Evidently, Gerrard now has a scary duo for Aston Villa going forward, with the 20-year-old being given the best opportunity to develop into a fantastic player working with Coutinho’s influence and experience.

He can learn a lot and become part of a formidable attacking threat with the Brazilian by his side to lead the team to greater things in the future.

It will be interesting to see how the pair progress over the remaining months of the season, and how far the former Rangers boss can take his players in the future with new additions being integrated into the existing Villa squad and the continued development of young players like Ramsey.

Ijaz Butt's UK trip on ICC members' radar

ESPNcricinfo understands that the possibility of suspending Butt from his role as an ICC director – for his extraordinary outburst against the ECB and the ICC – has “crossed the minds” of officials

Osman Samiuddin and Nagraj Gollapudi28-Sep-2010Ijaz Butt, the PCB chairman, has arrived in the UK on a visit that comes amid growing tension between the two national cricket boards, and with the ICC watching developments closely. ESPNcricinfo understands that the possibility of suspending Butt from his role as an ICC director – for his extraordinary outburst against the ECB and the ICC – has “crossed the minds” of officials, but such an extreme step will be averted if the boards of England and Pakistan achieve some sort of rapprochement; a meeting between the board heads is expected on Wednesday. In any case, there is a possibility that the matter might feature at the next ICC meeting, in Dubai, from October 12-13. At that meeting, Butt was reportedly aiming to table his own resolution calling for Lorgat’s removal.Butt has been on the warpath with the ICC and ECB since the spot-fixing scandal broke late last month. He is unhappy with the ICC’s provisional suspension of three Pakistan players, arguing that a separate police investigation should have been allowed to reach its conclusion before any such action was taken. Last week, an enraged Butt launched a series of extraordinary public attacks on the England side, the ECB and the ICC; this, the morning after what ESPNcricinfo understands to have been an amicable dinner meeting between Butt and Lorgat in Dubai.Butt is expected to meet with Giles Clarke, the ECB chairman, to try and resolve the issue. “Sometime today [Wednesday] Ijaz Butt and Giles Clarke will engage in an attempt to resolve those misunderstandings or issues levelled against the ECB,” Lorgat told . “We would always encourage our members to be in the best harmony as possible and it’s important for us they have good relations. Both are directors of the ICC so they have a larger responsibility to the game and I would hope they would come to a good and settled position.”The outburst prompted top ICC officials to give more than a passing thought to suspending Butt as ICC director – all board heads of full member countries automatically hold this post in the ICC. The suspension would be for a breach of the post’s own, separate code of ethics, which require individual directors to take a broader, more global view of the game; in this code, for example, casting allegations against a fellow member, such as Butt did against England, constitutes a breach. It is believed that there might be several cases over the last two years where Butt has breached this code.Much will depend on how the PCB’s spat with the ECB plays out. “Those [thoughts of suspending an ICC director] are things that are exercising ICC minds,” a source told ESPNcricinfo. “They’d rather wait to see what transpires between ECB and PCB. The ECB have made it clear they want to take some action so there is no point the ICC getting involved in what could be a legal case. The ICC does have a code of ethics and it has crossed their minds but there might be no need to take this action if there is a legal action against Butt. If he does apologise, the ICC have to see what to do because if he has apologized then what can you do? Nobody has come forward and made any noise of suspension yet but that doesn’t mean nobody will do that. Someone might have something to say at the next board meeting.”Butt claimed “there was loud and clear talk in bookie circles of English players taking enormous amounts of money” in the Oval ODI, after which the ECB sent a letter to Butt asking for a full apology. Unless one is made, says the ECB, legal action will be taken against Butt. Reports suggest that Butt is unwilling to apologise. Last week there were discussions (but no decisions were made) in the PCB’s corridors of power over the possibility of initiating a tit-for-tat legal action against Jonathon Trott as counter; the batsman had nearly come to blows with fast bowler Wahab Riaz in nets before the fourth ODI at Lord’s after an altercation. Butt’s trip to the UK – with the board’s legal advisor Taffazul Rizvi – raises the possibility that he might engage in efforts to reconcile with the ECB.Every ICC director is obligated, under the ethics code, to report or refer what they believe to have been a breach of the code to the ICC ethics officer. Any motion for suspension will require a two-thirds majority vote from directors to be implemented. The signs are not good for the PCB, for the tiff with the ECB is indicative of an administration that has made few friends in two years; only last year the Asian bloc was upset over clumsy attempts by the PCB to have the 2011 World Cup moved away from the subcontinent; the relationship with the BCCI is dependent on political ties, which are not good; the PCB was one of the boards not in favour of Australia and New Zealand’s nomination of John Howard for the role of ICC vice-president. It also remains with the ambit of powers of the ICC president or the ethics officer to suspend a director if a breach has occurred.Relations between the PCB and ICC itself, meanwhile, have been tense almost from the day Butt took over as chairman in October 2008. In one of his very first press conferences in Lahore, Butt annoyed the ICC when he publicly revealed information from confidential meetings ICC directors had on the IPL and ICL.Since then, matters have become more acute. The most serious clash came over the 2011 World Cup last March; Pakistan was removed as one of the venues from the tournament after the terror attacks on the Sri Lankan team in Lahore and a generally unstable security situation in the country. The PCB threatened to take the ICC to court over the decision, though eventually a compromise was agreed upon. The spot-fixing scandal has stretched ties to breaking point.Butt’s suspension, though, would not mean suspending the PCB as a full member or harming Pakistan in any way. The suspension would apply only to Butt and prevent him from attending ICC meetings. In such cases, the ICC is likely to ask the PCB to appoint a replacement.

O’Rourke makes Conte/Spurs transfer claim

Tottenham manager Antonio Conte ‘wants to bring someone in’ over the summer to bolster his options at centre-back, journalist Pete O’Rourke has told GiveMeSport.

The Lowdown: Spurs’ defensive issues

After just six minutes on Sunday, Tottenham found themselves 1-0 down to Bruno Lage’s Wolves as Raul Jimenez volleyed home following a poor piece of goalkeeping by captain Hugo Lloris.

With Leandro Dendoncker doubling the lead in the 18th minute, Spurs had a mountain to climb at half-time. Their disappointing performance continued into the second half, and after failing to produce any significant chances, the Lilywhites dropped another three points and suffered their third straight defeat. Not only did this allow Wolves to overtake them in the league table, it was also Antonio Conte’s first time losing three games in a row since 2009.

The Latest: Conte wants a new centre-back

According to comments made by O’Rourke, Conte unsurprisingly wants to add another centre-back to his defensive ranks in order to implement his preferred three-at-the-back system.

Speaking to GiveMeSport about the centre-back position, the journalist said: “It’s a position that Conte wants to bring someone in, he wants to play with that three-man defence.”

This follows The Telegraph’s report which claimed that Spurs are eyeing Lille’s Sven Botman, Inter Milan’s Alessandro Bastoni and RB Leipzig’s Josko Gvardiol, as Fabio Paratici scouts potential targets ahead of the summer transfer window.

The Verdict: Centre-back evidently needed

Spurs have proved to be leaky at the back this season, having conceded 29 goals in the Premier League (averaging 1.32 per game), the same as bottom club Burnley. Fans would surely have been hoping their defensive issues were going to improve under the Italian, but having conceded seven goals in their last three games, this problem clearly remains.

Spurs don’t appear to be doing too badly at the back compared with other top-six league rivals; West Ham have conceded 33 goals whilst Manchester United have let in 32, but these sides have been able to minimise that damage at the other end of the pitch, with the Hammers netting 44 goals and the Red Devils 38. Spurs, on the other hand, have scored a meagre 28 top-flight goals and have the ignominy of a a negative goal difference.

If Conte’s side are to push on for European qualification, they will need to improve defensively in order to scrape wins, with the Lilywhites’ attacking threat seemingly limited this season. It should come as no surprise that the Italian is eager to bring in some new centre-backs over the summer to remedy one clear issue in his squad.

Rangers injury news on Ramsey

Kevin Campbell has now shared a concern that he has about Aaron Ramsey after Glasgow Rangers revealed some injury news on the midfielder.

The Lowdown: Minor knock

As confirmed by the Ibrox faithful, Ramsey missed their 1-1 draw away at Dundee United in the Scottish Premiership over the weekend as he had a minor knock.

The Wales international also missed a recent bounce match against Premier League club Brentford, which resulted in a 2-2 draw.

With a big second leg against Borussia Dortmund in the UEFA Europa League coming up on Thursday night, and the Teddy Bears leading 4-2 from the reverse fixture, Giovanni van Bronckhorst will now be sweating over Ramsey’s fitness ahead of the clash.

The Latest: Campbell reacts

Speaking to Football Insider, former Everton and Arsenal striker Campbell, who regularly features on Sky Sports, has since raised his concern with Ramsey due to his history with injuries:

“His injury record is always a worry, a problem.

“That was the gamble for Rangers. When a player starts to get into his 30s it takes them longer to recover. It doesn’t look good for Ramsey.

“It is only a loan until the end of the season though so Rangers haven’t invested loads of money.

“It’s important to remember injuries can happen to anyone though. It just feels doubly difficult when it’s a player of Ramsey’s quality and history of injuries.”

The Verdict: Worrying

Given his injury record, and the fact that he is not getting any younger at 31, it is always worrying when Ramsey has even the slightest of niggles.

The Light Blues will no doubt be hoping that he is fit enough to play a part against Dortmund, a team that he has won four times and scored against, and they can really use all of his European experience to help them get over the line.

Nonetheless, Ramsey himself will be looking to prove his fitness while out on loan from Juventus, so that he can potentially secure a move away in the summer.

Leeds: Insider drops Jesse Marsch claim

A huge Leeds United claim has emerged over current head coach Jesse Marsch’s impact since arriving…

What’s the talk?

Eurosport transfer insider Dean Jones has claimed that the American boss has been catching the eye behind the scenes since replacing Marcelo Bielsa at the helm.

He told GIVEMESPORT:

“The impact he’s made on the club has been really significant already and everybody loves him.

“We’ll have to see how it pans out but Leeds is quite a positive environment, and they’re positive they can fix whatever comes along.”

Supporters will be bouncing

This will surely leave the Leeds supporters bouncing as it shows that his appointment has been a success beyond the results on the pitch.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-leeds-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-marsch-raphinha-dest-philhay” title=”Read the latest Leeds news!”]

The Lillywhites were in a precarious position in the Premier League towards the end of Bielsa’s reign at Elland Road and relegation was looking like a real possibility as they sat just above the bottom three.

They had won five of their 26 league matches under the Argentine coach, picking up 0.88 points per game before he left the Yorkshire outfit.

There has been a big uplift in form since Marsch came through the door.

In his six top-flight matches in charge of the club so far, he has won three, drawn one and lost two – picking up 1.67 points per game. This suggests that he has been able to get the best out of the players in a way that Bielsa was failing to do in his final months with the team.

Leeds’ impressive form since his arrival may be down to the impact he has made behind the scenes. Jones has claimed that he is making it a positive environment and that could explain why the players are now showing the best of their abilities as they are enjoying their football again.

Fans will love this for the impact that it has had this season and will be bouncing ahead of the 2022/23 campaign as they can get excited about what is to come.

Marsch will be given the summer to bring in his own players with Victor Orta to prepare for a full season in charge of the Lillywhites.

His short time in Yorkshire so far indicates that it could be an exciting year for the supporters to look forward to if he is able to strengthen the squad and get the players on-board to kick on and challenge higher up the table.

West Brom: Will Sam Johnstone stay?

Newly-appointed West Bromwich Albion boss Steve Bruce may face a battle to keep talismanic goalkeeper Sam Johnstone.

What’s the latest?

Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur are set to revive their interest in former the Manchester United goalkeeper per The Daily Mail.

The north London outfit were reportedly interested in securing his services in the January transfer window, but a move for the 29-year-old never came to fruition.

According to the latest reports, Spurs will go back in for Johnstone in a bid to sign him on a free transfer upon the expiry of his contract.

Tottenham have been looking to provide quality competition for first-choice ‘keeper Hugo Lloris and although they have possessed quality within their ranks with the loan-signing of Pierluigi Gollini from Atalanta, they will reportedly shun a deal to make the Italian’s move permanent after he has failed to impress in his ten appearances thus far.

With Johnstone looking to win back his place in the England set-up and Spurs looking to increase the quality within their goalkeeping ranks, a move makes sense for both parties.

The Baggies will be terrified

Despite West Brom’s disappointing 12th position in the Championship table, Sam Johnstone has been far from disappointing.

The 29-year-old Englishman who has been described as “unbelievable” by Gary Lineker has been just that this season.

Johnstone finds himself third in the Championship’s clean sheet rankings with an incredible 14 clean sheets.

The £7.2m-rated goalkeeper is clearly too good for England’s second tier, after proving his competency as a shot-stopper just the campaign prior in the Premier League.

His performance metrics in England’s top flight last year will concern Hugo Lloris, as Johnstone achieved a greater save percentage at 70% than the Frenchman who achieved 68%.

The Englishman put in some world-class displays in the Premier League last term and more than proved his quality, with a call-up to the Three Lions squad a consequence of that.

He’s maintained a solid save percentage this season also, with 65%, though we know he can improve on that metric.

For selfish reasons, West Brom should do everything they can to keep Sam Johnstone in order to fulfil their ambition of sealing a return to the Premier League. Based on his displays, losing him would be somewhat of a disaster.

Rangers must launch Clarke-Harris transfer

Rangers and Ross Wilson have not been shy when it comes to spending money on bringing new players to Ibrox during the recent transfer windows.

However, as tends to happen with a lot of clubs, not every player that gets mentioned with a move to the SPFL side ends up joining.

One player that the Gers were linked with in recent memory is striker Jonson Clarke-Harris.

It was reported by the Daily Record during the previous summer transfer window that the Peterborough United attacker was interested in making a move to Ibrox.

However, as many supporters will be aware, the 27-year-old didn’t end up holding up a Rangers shirt in front of Ibrox either during the previous summer or winter windows.

With a total of 354 club appearances under his belt across all competitions for a range of clubs, the centre-forward has racked up a combined total of 125 goal contributions.

Having found the back of the net 105 times and delivered 20 assists, the Englishman certainly knows how to find the back of the net.

This season has seen the striker score 11 goals and provide three assists in 37 Championship appearances, highlighting how important he is to the side,

Also, his overall performances have earned him a rating of 6.85/10 from WhoScored, making him Peterborough’s highest-rated player for this campaign.

Labelled as being a “real threat” on the pitch by Lee Johnson all the way back in 2013, that’s exactly what he is now in terms of being a regular goalscorer.

Having also been described as looking “really strong” by Grant McCann, it seems likely that the Posh will be desperate to keep hold of their star striker.

However, with the club in danger of being relegated to League One at the end of the season, perhaps a move to Ibrox would be a tempting prospect for the player rather than play in the third division.

With Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side able to offer the chance to win titles and play in Europe, it may not take much effort to convince the attacker to pack his bags.

Moving forward, if a deal for Clarke-Harris is there to be made in the summer, Wilson and Rangers should definitely be in the mix to sign him.
