Sutton hails Jack’s performance vs Dortmund

Former Celtic striker Chris Sutton has hailed Rangers midfielder Ryan Jack’s superb performance in the memorable 4-2 win away to Borussia Dortmund.

The Lowdown: What a night

Giovanni van Bronkhorst enjoyed a magical night in the Europa League on Thursday, in a game many would have expected his side to lose in Germany.

Instead, the Gers ran out 4-2 winners against the Bundesliga giants, with goals from James Tavernier, Alfredo Morelos and John Lundstram, as well as a Dan-Axel Zagadou own goal, securing the win.

It was Van Bronckhorst’s best game as Rangers boss since replacing Steven Gerrard, with numerous players performing magnificently.

The Latest: Sutton hails ‘excellent’ Jack

One of those was Jack, who made three tackles and interceptions apiece at Signal Iduna Park, as well as winning five duels, according to Sofascore, winning the ball back for his side a total of 11 times in an all-action performance.

Taking to Twitter after the game, Sutton lauded the Gers midfielder:

“Well played Rangers, a huge result. Some big performances but Ryan Jack really excellent.”

The Verdict: Big-game masterclass

While Jack may not have been a headline-maker in the game, neither scoring or assisting, his battling performance was one of the most effective in an understated manner.

His aforementioned statistics during the match highlight his tenacity and dominance in the middle of the park, up against a player in Jude Bellingham who is being tipped for great things.

If you take into account that this was just Jack’s second start of the season because of serious injury problems, it looks even more impressive.

Liverpool: Trio shine in draw with Benfica

Ibrahima Konate, Kostas Tsmikas and Roberto Firmino were the standout performers as Liverpool drew 3-3 with Benfica in the UEFA Champions League quarter-final at Anfield.

Despite the draw, ultimately the Reds booked a place in the semi-finals owing to a 6-4 aggregate success, where Jurgen Klopp’s side will face the conquerors of Bayern Munich, Villarreal.

After netting a first goal for the club in the away leg, Konate headed home the opener before Goncalo Ramos equalised before half time. After the break, a Firmino brace looked to have sealed the deal on the night before Roman Yaremchuk and Darwin Nunez struck back late on, albeit to no avail.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-liverpool-transfer-news-28/” title=”Latest Liverpool transfer news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

According to Sofascore, there were three Reds in particular who stood out on the night and we’ve taken a close look at the numbers that made up a successful night for Klopp’s men.

Konate 7.4/10

Not content with opening the scoring, the powerful Frenchman produced an outstanding defensive display in the face of the impressive Darwin Nunez.

The 22-year-old centre-back won 2/2 (100%) ground duels, 3/5 (60%) aerial duels and was accurate with 94/105 (90%) passes.

This was yet another coming of age performance from the ever-impressive youngster who signed for £36million last summer (Sky Sports).

Tsimikas 8.2/10

Understudy to Andy Robertson, Tsimikas certainly grabbed this rare opportunity to impress on the biggest stage.

Overall, the Greek left-back provided two assists, won an impressive 9/12 (75%) of ground duels, completed 56/65 (86%) accurate passes and made four key passes on the night.

The 25-year-old also won 1/2 (50%) of his aerial duels and found a teammate with 4/15 (26%) crosses.

Firmino 8.4/10

Second half brace aside, this was a typical Firmino performance as the workmanlike Brazilian allowed those around him to flourish whilst pressuring defenders throughout.

This was underpinned by the defensive statistics as the 30-year-old won 3/7 (42%) of his ground duels, blocked two shots and made one interception.

In an attacking sense, Firmino completed 39/48 (81%) of his passes and enjoyed 70 touches as Liverpool advanced through the tie.

Leeds step up chase for Josko Gvardiol

Leeds United are now stepping up their chase to sign RB Leipzig centre-back Josko Gvardiol in the summer transfer window.

What’s the story?

According to reports, Jesse Marsch’s side have tracked the Croatia international for two years now, and they initially came close to signing him back in the summer of 2020.

It is now suggested that Victor Orta and his recruitment team have continued to keep tabs on the defender and are finally ready to make their move.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-leeds-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-marsch-raphinha-dest-philhay” title=”Read the latest Leeds news!”]

However, while Leeds scouts have been present at some of his recent matches, they are likely to face competition from other Premier League clubs for his signature too.

Perfect signing for Marsch

Valued at a whopping £100m by CIES, a fee which would shatter Leeds’ club-record outlay, Gvardiol is very much emerging as one of European football’s brightest centre-back prospects.

In an analytics-based profile done on the 20-year-old by The Athletic, they noted: “When it comes to defending, Gvardiol looks to be well-trained in the aggressive Leipzig way. He is always active in getting tight to his man (defending intensity 99 out of 99). He is also above average in his frequency of ball recoveries and interceptions (79 out of 99), highlighting how much he likes to step out and read the play.”

Meanwhile, in a piece for BBC Sport earlier last month, journalist Izak Ante Sucic claimed that the defender is “built like a tank” and that those in his homeland liken him to Liverpool powerhouse Virgil van Dijk.

He said: “In Croatia we like to compare him to Virgil van Dijk, because he’s built that way (6 foot 1). He’s one of his role models in football and he’s also mentioned Thiago Silva and Sergio Ramos – Ramos because he’s also one of those players who likes to score as many goals as he can.

“In my opinion, I think he can be as good as Virgil one day. When you see how he behaves on the field and off the field, he’s one of those guys where you’d say ‘he’s going to succeed’.”

The Van Dijk comparisons certainly paint a picture of just how highly-rated Gvardiol is, and given the Whites’ defensive troubles this season – they have conceded 68 goals in the Premier League, the most of any team – he could come in and have a huge impact.

Also, with his ability to play at both centre-back and left-back, the young Croatian offers a versatility which would be invaluable to Marsch, given both the club’s tragic injury record and the unconvincing performances of summer signing Junior Firpo.

It’s a move which would certainly have the Leeds manager delighted.

Surrey release Usman Afzaal

Former England batsman Usman Afzaal has been released by Surrey leaving him searching for a new county. It is a move that was widely expected after Afzaal, 33, hadn’t featured in a first-class game since Surrey’s innings defeat to Middlesex at the end of July.Afzaal, who played for England in three Ashes Tests in 2001, joined Surrey from Northamptonshire at the end of the 2007 season and made 4328 runs in 101 games in all competitions for the county, with a first-class average of 46.44.This season, however, Surrey have backed the younger players coming through their system as they try to find a route off the lower end of the second division.Batsmen Arun Harinath (23), Tom Lancefield (19) and most recently Jason Roy (20), have all featured this summer and Surrey may also have Kevin Pietersen on their books after he joined on loan earlier this month.Surrey’s managing director Gus Mackay praised Afzaal for all he’s given the club over the last three seasons and wished him luck in finding a new county with which to continue his career: “I would like to thank Usman for his contribution to the club during his time here and wish him all the best for the future.”

Yousuf returns to limited-over squads

Mohammad Yousuf’s rehabilitation back into the Pakistan fold is complete as the batsman was recalled to a 16-man squad to face England in a five-ODI series and two Twenty20 internationals in September

Mohammad Yousuf’s rehabilitation back into the Pakistan fold is complete as the batsman was recalled to a 16-man squad to face England in a five-ODI series and two Twenty20 internationals in September. There was no recall, however, for Yousuf’s long time middle-order ally, Younis Khan, the selection committee and captain claiming he has not been “cleared” by the PCB chairman Ijaz Butt.In another significant move, Shoaib Malik, a limited-overs fixture in Pakistan sides for a number of years, has been dropped. Mohsin Khan, the chairman of selectors, was economical with his words when asked about the significance of Malik’s dropping. “Lack of form, lack of performance,” he told Cricinfo.Yousuf was retired from all cricket until recently in protest at an indefinite ban from selection the board had placed on him. After being cleared by the PCB, though, he answered an SOS to bolster an inexperienced and flimsy middle order in the England Test series and played a vital role in Pakistan’s third Test win at The Oval. Yousuf had led Pakistan in four ODIs in Australia at the turn of the year but missed their last ODI assignment, the Asia Cup in June, because of the punishment.Younis had also played in the ODIs in Australia, but with limited success. In the aftermath of the tour, he was also handed the same punishment as Yousuf but has not been able to reach a resolution with the board. A number of other players who were banned have reached a compromise with Butt and had their punishments overturned. “I asked the chairman PCB about the situation with Younis twice,” captain Shahid Afridi said. “But the clearance wasn’t given by the PCB. I did what I had to do.”The other major news is the axing of Malik, who also had a ban imposed and lifted in quick time after the Australia tour. Malik was in poor form during the ongoing Test series in England and was dropped from the side for the third Test. Over the last 12 months Malik averaged 30 with the bat in 11 ODIs, with only one fifty-plus score: a Champions Trophy hundred against India. Take that out and he averaged 20The squad is a significant one as the countdown begins to the 2011 World Cup, due to start in February. Afridi said he was looking to build a pool of 20-25 players between now and then; Pakistan are scheduled to take on England, South Africa, New Zealand and possibly Zimbabwe in ODIs in that time.In that light, two notable performers from the Tests against England have been called up. Azhar Ali, who played two innings of immense significance amid a sequence of low scores, had his first limited-overs call up. Wahab Riaz, who was a part of the ODI squad two years ago, also returned following an impressive Test debut at The Oval.”In a 50-over game, there is still a lot of batting to be done,” Mohsin said. “We’ve had problems batting the fulll quota of overs in the past so we felt the need for batsmen in this squad who can play long innings. Yousuf is one, and that is why he is in the side, and Azhar we feel is another.”Three others picks are significant. Fawad Alam, whose exclusion from the Asia Cup and the England Tests , was criticised, returned to beef up a lower middle-order in which he impressed in Australia. Mohammad Hafeez, in and out of the side, over the last two years came back in place of Imran Farhat, presumably as an opening option. And Shoaib Akhtar continued his remarkable return to the international scene, retaining his place from the Asia Cup and the Twenty20 internationals against Australia to complete a strong pace attack that includes Mohammad Asif, Mohammad Amir and a fit-again Umar Gul, alongisde Riaz.Squad: Shahid Afridi (capt), Salman Butt, Shahzaib Hasan, Mohammad Hafeez, Mohammad Yousuf, Azhar Ali, Umar Akmal, Kamran Akmal, Fawad Alam, Abdul Razzaq, Mohammad Asif, Mohammad Amir, Umar Gul, Saeed Ajmal, Shoaib Akhtar, Wahab Riaz.Reserves: Sarfraz Ahmed, Asad Shafiq, Mohammad Irfan, Abdur Rehman.

Rangers played Matuesz Zukowski blinder

Rangers enjoyed a productive January transfer window as Ross Wilson completed a number of deals to reshape Gio van Bronckhorst’s squad.

Nathan Patterson left for a club-record fee and the sporting director made the most of that sale by snapping up fresh talent.

Aaron Ramsey, Amad Diallo, James Sands and Mateusz Zukowski all came in, with John Souttar also agreeing a pre-contract deal with the Glasgow giants to join on a free transfer at the end of the season.

The Welsh loanee from Juventus, Ramsey, has scored two goals in his last two Premiership outings as he is starting to show why he was brought to the club. However, Sands, Diallo and Zukowski are all yet to make their breakthrough in the first-team.

They may not be at their sparkling best right now but that does not mean that they are all poor signings by Wilson and the club.

In fact, the Gers have played a blinder with the addition of Zukowski at right-back as he is a player who has the scope to develop into a quality player for the club.

Upon the right-back’s arrival, Wilson claimed that he has “high potential” and his soaring market value over the last 12 months reflects that. Transfermarkt valued him at a measly £180k in May 2021 and his form for Legia Gdansk led to him being valued at £2.25m at the time of his switch to Scotland, which means that his value has risen by 1150% in less than a year.

In the Ekstraklasa this season, he averaged a solid SofaScore rating of 6.84 across 18 appearances. He managed two goals and one assist from full-back, whilst making an outstanding 3.9 tackles and interceptions per game – winning 5.4 duels per match, with these performances causing his stock to rise.

Meanwhile, Tavernier has made 2.9 tackles and interceptions per game in the Premiership. This suggests that, if he can carry his form over to Scotland, he may be more active defensively than the skipper, although it is unlikely that he will match the Englishman’s six goals and 11 assists.

The Gers veteran turns 31 later this year and could be heading into the final throes of his Ibrox career, with Zukowski lined up to take over from him at right-back in the future.

Whilst the Ibrox faithful may not be seeing the full benefits of this move yet, everything indicates that it is only a matter of time before he shows what he is capable of for the club as they have picked up a gem who is on the up and has room to grow. Wilson played a blinder by picking the 20-year-old up as his value continues to soar and, hopefully, he will be able to fulfill his potential in the coming years.

Entrada do Rodinei no lugar do Pará
