Amir must focus on rehabilitation – Lorgat

Mohammad Amir must go through a process of rehabilitation and not focus on the reduction of the ban imposed on him by an ICC tribunal, the ICC chief Haroon Lorgat has said

Nagraj Gollapudi21-Mar-2012Mohammad Amir must go through a process of rehabilitation, including educating himself and others about the perils of corruption, and not focus on the reduction of the ban imposed on him by an ICC tribunal for his involvement in spot-fixing, the ICC chief Haroon Lorgat has said. Lorgat also said the ICC rules do not allow for a reduction of the five-year ban and stressed the importance of respecting the verdict the independent tribunal had reached. In his first statement after returning to Pakistan from England on February 26, Amir had said he would not request the ICC to reduce his ban, which runs until 2015. Lorgat said Amir should start the rehabilitation process by doing the right things.”I would prefer that the starting point should not be about whether we [ICC] could reduce the sentence,” Lorgat told ESPNcricinfo in Mumbai, en route to Sri Lanka where he will release the first batch of tickets for the ICC World Twenty20. “Let that [the reduction of the ban] be the end result of a process of rehabilitation since he has now come clean, if that is indeed the case. Part of the sanction he received from the ICC tribunal was to educate himself and for him to educate others. So let us do all the necessary building blocks before we get to a point where anyone could ask, ‘Does he now deserve a review?'”Amir was released from custody after serving half of his six-month sentence for his involvement in the spot-fixing scandal during the Lord’s Test in 2010. The Crown Prosecution Service had brought charges against Amir, Salman Butt and Mohammad Asif under conspiracy to accept corrupt payments and conspiracy to cheat at gambling after a sting operation carried out by the now defunct . Butt and Asif had pleaded not guilty in court but were found guilty in November 2011; Amir pleaded guilty to the charges and did not stand trial. Amir, however, had pleaded not guilty before the ICC’s tribunal in Doha in February 2011.Life could have been different and perhaps easier for Amir, Lorgat said, had he pleaded guilty in front of the ICC tribunal in Doha. Amir had maintained he was innocent at the time. The three-man tribunal – comprising Michael Beloff QC, Sharad Rao and Justice Albie Sachs – banned Salman Butt, Mohammad Asif and Amir for ten, seven and five years respectively, after finding them guilty of spot-fixing. Amir’s reaction to that decision was that he would appeal the ban in the Court of Arbitration of Sports in Switzerland. He later decided not to appeal.”I find it very unfortunate for Mohammad Amir. We did provide him with lots of opportunities,” Lorgat said, when asked if he was disappointed Amir did not confess in Doha. “The tribunal might have looked at it differently and who knows what decision they could have come to on sanction. It could have been a different story. I am sad for him.”In an interview on Sky TV after his release from custody, Amir said he had been tricked into bowling no-balls to order during the Lord’s Test by his agent Mazhar Majeed and his captain Salman Butt. He said he did not “have the courage” to admit his guilt to the ICC tribunal.Lorgat’s advice for Amir was to not to give up and, “do all the right things.” “Come into the education process and don’t just give up the game,” Lorgat said. “Retain your faith in the future. He must be prepared to tell his story and explain to others what they need to be careful of.”Lorgat felt the ICC, the PCB and Amir, and all other stakeholders, should work together to try and ensure no other player falls prey to corruption. He said Amir could talk, over video, to the players during the ICC Under-19 World Cup to be held in Australia later this year. “If Mohammad Amir stands up and delivers a message of caution about this murky world, people are going to sit up and listen. That is one example of rehabilitation.”

'I feel like I'm 21 again' – Brad Hogg

They say 40 is the new 30. Or maybe 40 is the new 20 in Brad Hogg’s case after he was selected in Australia’s T20 squad for next week’s internationals against India. Hogg, who turns 41 next month, retired from all forms of cricket in March 2008 but made his comeback this summer for the Perth Scorchers and has been one of the standout performers in the Big Bash League. He has collected 12 wickets at an average of 13.50 in helping the Scorchers reach this weekend’s final, but even more impressive has been his economy rate of 5.40. Hogg now has the chance not only to resume his international career next week, but also to earn himself a place at the ICC World Twenty20, to be held in Sri Lanka in September.”It’s unbelievable. Seriously I feel like I’m 21 again,” Hogg said. “I really feel excited about where my cricket’s gone over the last month and to be honest with you it’s just a dream come true.”John (Inverarity, national selection manager) rang me up yesterday morning and just asked me if I was right to go. He woke me up at about 7 o’clock in the morning, the old bugger, but it was just great news. I hardly slept last night. I’m just excited. It’s just like being a kid again and another Christmas present under the Christmas tree.”It is an astonishing turn-around for Hogg, who four years ago ended a 15-year first-class career that brought him seven Test appearances, 123 one-day internationals, and two T20 internatioanls. Despite still being extremely fit, and seemingly enjoying the game, he cited personal issues as the major reason for his retirement, saying at the time “I’ve got things that I want to sort out at home and get my new chapter in my life organised and on the go.”Hogg disappeared from the game completely, surfacing briefly as a television commentator for Australia’s tour of India in 2010, before returning to represent Willetton Dragons in Perth grade cricket last season. After two T20s he was convinced to play two-day cricket again, and he took 5 for 44 in an elimination final, before scoring off a match-winning 144 in the semi-final. Since being recruited by the Perth Scorchers this season he has been a revelation.”I didn’t plan it. It’s just really exciting and I’m going to enjoy every moment of it,” Hogg said. “One thing I’ve realised over the last three years is life only comes once and once cricket was gone I thought it was gone forever. But I’m just really going to make the most of this opportunity. It’s just fantastic. I’m proud to be West Australian and I’m proud to be back in the green and gold as well.”Only Rana Naved-ul-Hasan (15) and James Faulkner (13) have taken more wickets in the BBL than Hogg this summer, while only Mitchell Starc has a better average, and no other player has conceded less than a six per over. However, despite his incredible form, representing Australia had only recently become a possibility in Hogg’s mind.”Probably only about a week ago I started to think if they were interested in selecting me I’d definitely take that opportunity,” he said. “The only thing that’s on my mind for the rest of this week is to make sure that we give it our best to get some silverware on the mantelpiece for West Australian cricket through the Perth Scorchers, and then after that my goal will be to try and get in that World Cup squad and win a World Cup at T20 level for Australia.”Hogg is no stranger to World Cups having been a part of both the 2003 and 2007 triumphs for Australia in the 50-over format. Hogg was quick to point out he was no guarantee to go to the World T20 later this year and was even more cagey when asked about his prospects of playing beyond that tournament.”Firstly I’ve got to be fit around the World Cup and I’ve got to be still showing form. They’re not going to pick me if I’m not showing form, simple as that. Beyond the World Cup I don’t really have any aspirations after that. I think Australian cricket’s got to look forward and go for the younger players, but at the present moment, luckily, I’ve been in form with the ball and they’ve given me the nod to participate in Twenty20 cricket for Australia. I’m not going to complain, simple as that.”Hogg was hoping to go Sri Lanka for the World T20 in any case, having accepted a coaching role with Papua New Guinea.”I’ve had to change a few things. I was meant to be coaching Papua New Guinea and we were hoping to get that squad into the T20 World Cup just coming up. Things have changed. We’ve got to find a new coach over there for the boys.”Andy Bichel was doing the job and then I was going to take over when Bich decided to leave but those things have changed. I’ll stay involved in some capacity there. [I will] keep chatting with Greg Campbell who is in charge. They’re a pretty good, talented squad over there. An interesting group of people but the enthusiasm over there for the way they go about their cricket gave me the joy to come back and play for the Perth Scorchers.”Should Hogg play next Wednesday against India it will be one month shy of four years since he last represented Australia, and more than five years since he played a T20 international. But that pales by comparison to the seven-year, 78-match gap between his first and second Tests. However, Hogg is unperturbed by any of that as Twenty20 has given him a new lease on life.”If I was a little bit younger I’d want to play all three forms of the game but Twenty20’s given me the opportunity to participate for my country at the highest level again and keep me involved in the game as a player,” he said. “Basically I just want to stay involved in cricket as long as I can. It’s been my life from day dot, I’ve enjoyed it. I love my sport and I’m just grateful that cricket’s given me the opportunities that it has.”

The facts about Saeed Ajmal

ESPNcricinfo can today provide the facts that prove the legality of Saeed Ajmal’s bowling action

Saeed Ajmal: what really happens with his action•Getty Images

ESPNcricinfo can today provide the facts that prove the legality of Saeed Ajmal’s bowling action.Ajmal was Man of the Series against England after taking 24 wickets in the three-Test series and playing a prominent role in Pakistan’s first Test whitewash against England.Ajmal caused confusion when he gave a TV interview following the series and appeared to indicate he had been given dispensation by the ICC to bowl above the 15-degree tolerance limit.Countless fans have contacted ESPNcricinfo through social networking sites and by email asking us to clarify the situation regarding Ajmal. After a thorough investigation, including extensive discussion with the ICC, these are the facts. Ajmal’s action is well within the ICC range of tolerance. While he does bowl with a bend in his arm, it does not straighten more, on average, than about eight degrees. His arm does come through at a bent angle but that is allowed so long as it doesn’t straighten beyond the tolerance level. The figure of 23.5 degrees mentioned by Ajmal is the average angle of his arm at the beginning of delivery. The ICC put Ajmal, along with other bowlers, under constant scrutiny and evidence suggests that there has been no significant deterioration in Ajmal’s action since he was tested in 2009. Contrary to widespread belief, Ajmal’s off-break and quicker ball actually cause his arm to straighten more – though only a fraction more – than his much-debated doosra. The ICC is reluctant to discuss bowling actions in detail because officials fear the subject is too complicated to explain. For the full story read senior cricket correspondent George Dobell’s piece from Dubai.

India's role will be key to fighting corruption – Mani

Ehsan Mani, the former ICC president, has urged cricket boards to take responsibility to curb corruption in the sport by engaging with their governments and law enforcement agencies to punish the perpetrators they find. Mani said while the role of the ICC was limited, India’s role in this exercise could be “significant” if it found a way to monitor and regulate the illegal betting industry in the country.”Every time it is the players who are under the radar. The ones who corrupt the cricketers are somehow never punished,” Mani told ESPNcricinfo. “One was hoping that the conviction of three Pakistanis and one English cricketer would send out a strong message and frighten players, but this I think is not going to work. In the long run, it is the root-cause that has to be dealt with.”An undercover operation by the stated that two Indian bookmakers had claimed they remained undeterred by the recent prosecutions of professional cricketers, the game continued to offer plenty of opportunities for spot-fixing and that professional cricketers could be easily be lured in all forms of the game. In the report the bookies had said that they had recruited players from several countries to throw part or all of international matches, including the World Cup semi-final between India and Pakistan. The ICC denied there had been evidence to “prompt an investigation into the match.”Mani defended the ICC’s actions in the current environment, saying its role was limited as the influence of the illegal betting industry was hard to control. “They don’t have the authority to set up the sting operations in any country so the responsibility [should be] laid on the individual boards to follow up. The problem is the illegal bookies in the subcontinent – most of them are from India and some are in Pakistan. They work in a grey area where there is no control and monitoring.”The reported the bookmaker’s laundry list of fixing ‘rates’ offered. “Tens of thousands of pounds are on offer to fix matches, typically £44,000 ($70,000) to batsmen for slow scoring; £50,000 ($80,000) for bowlers who concede runs; and as much as £750,000 ($1.2m) to players or officials who can guarantee the outcome of a match,” the newspaper reported the bookmaker’s claims. The figures did not surprise Mani who said players could be easily tempted when they were offered large sums of money for little effort. “I’m afraid there will be some $600m involved in the upcoming one match between India and Pakistan on March 18. So for them [illegal bookmakers] investing $5 to 10m on a player is nothing. These days fixing a whole team isn’t possible but controlling individual player is viable and it could be common.”The ECB, Mani said, had been proactive in the Westfield case, asking players to come forward to reveal what they knew. They board responded robustly to concerns that the county circuit was as vulnerable to the influence of illegal bookies as the international game. The Indian board, however, Mani said, needed to take cognisance of the newspaper report. Even the BCCI had declined to respond, with the IPL governing council chairman Rajeev Shukla saying, “Newspapers can publish anything, unless we get something concrete from an agency or ICC, I don’t think it would be appropriate to react to it.”Mani said India could play a significant role by making betting legal. “These problems will never finish until the Indian government finds a way to regulate illegal book-making. I have seen the ECB showing concern, asking players to come and tell them what they know after Westfield’s sentencing. I think it’s the member boards who have to step up to engage the law enforcement agencies to work with them to clean up cricket.”
