Left-arm pacer Usman Khan’s maiden five-wicket haul in Twenty20 matches, as well as a quickfire fifty from Haris Sohail, helped Zarai Taraqiati Bank Limited thump Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited by 78 runs in Lahore and secure the Faysal Bank Department T20 Cup. Usman, who finished with match-winning figures of 5 for 9, also ended the tournament as the leading wicket-taker.Chasing a mammoth 185 in an electrifying atmosphere at the Gaddafi Stadium, SNGPL began their chase poorly, as Usman stunned them with a double strike in the opening over. Mohammad Rizwan was the first to depart after edging behind to the keeper Shakeel Ansar, and two deliveries later, Taufeeq Umar was bowled for a two-ball duck.Faysal Bank T20 Cup honours

Man of the Match – Usman Khan
Best Bowler – Usman Khan (11 wickets)
Best Batsman – Sarfraz Ahmed (250 runs)
Best Allrounder – Zohaib Ahmed (141 runs and 10 wickets)

With the pressure starting to mount on SNGPL, Usman struck again in his second over, dismissing Ali Waqas and Misbah-ul-Haq as the team slumped to 9 for 4- a point of no recovery. The pitch still looked good for runs, however, and Umar Akmal capitalized, smashing 16 runs off Mohammad Khalil in the fourth over, but his 19-run cameo ended when he carved a catch to Usman at third man.Bilalawal Bhatti, who made his Pakistan debut last month, was the only form of resistance for SNGPL. He made 38 off 20 balls with two sixes and five fours, but eventually slashed a top edge back to Ansar in the 12th over. Medium-pacer Imran Khan chipped in with three wickets, as SNGPL were bundled out for 106 in 16.1 overs.Earlier, ZTBL, put in to bat, made a flying start as Imran Nazir and Sharjeel Khan opened the inning with a blitzing 85-run stand, but they were both trapped lbw by Imran Ali in the 10th over. The team’s run rate began to fall as Yasir Hameed and Sohail took some time to settle, but once they found their feet, they anchored the innings with a 54-run third-wicket stand. Hameed was removed for 32, but Sohail added a late surge to the innings. His 32-ball 58 which included five fours and three sixes, eventually helped the team to 184 for 3.

Gul takes 11 to guide Habib Bank to win

Umar Gul’s 11-wicket haul paved the way for Habib Bank‘s innings-and-60-run win over Port Qasim Authority in Sialkot.Having chosen to bat, Port Qasim were routed for 65 in the first innings as Gul and Ehsan Adil bowled in tandem to pick up five wickets each. Gul finished with figures of 5 for 12 in 10 overs, while Adil took 5 for 48. A century from Shan Masood and a fifty from Aftab Alam helped Habib Bank reach 288, though they lost quick wickets towards the end to pacer Sohail Khan, who finished with figures of 4 for 72.Port Qasim fared marginally better in their second innings, but still fell short of clearing the 223-run deficit. Gul dismantled the top and middle order, dismissing five of the top six batsmen. Mohammad Waqas, who had retired hurt on the second evening, scored a stubborn fifty, but couldn’t stop Port Qasim from hurtling towards a defeat. The last-wicket stand between Mohammad Sami and Sohail Khan resisted, adding 34 runs before Sohail was dismissed with the score at 163.United Bank Limited won their second match with a combined bowling effort from Tariq Haroon and Atif Maqbool who helped them move above Zarai Taraqiati Bank Limited with a six-wicket win in Islamabad. Even though UBL conceded a two-run lead in the first innings, Haroon and Maqbool routed ZTBL for 136 in the second innings to put them in command.ZTBL scored 235 in the first innings with a hundred from Yasir Hameed (108) even though the middle- and lower-order didn’t score much. UBL were restricted to 233 by a nine-wicket haul from Imran Khan, his best first-class figures, as Saeed Bin Nasir top-scored with 97. Fiery spells from Haroon and Maqbool meant UBL had to chase 139, which they did with the help of Bismillah Khan (52) and Ali Asad (49*).

Weakened Mumbai in fight for survival

Mumbai, the defending Ranji champions, who are missing key players, take on a confident Gujarat at a result-conducive venue, as both teams make a final bid to secure a spot in the knockouts

The Preview by Amol Karhadkar29-Dec-2013

Mumbai will miss the services of Zaheer Khan and Ajinkya Rahane in Valsad•AFP

Irrespective of whether they are playing at home or away, Mumbai usually appear the stronger and more confident unit when the two sides train on the eve of a Ranji Trophy match. Sunday was definitely an exception to the rule. While the Gujarat squad was relaxed during its training at the Sardar Vallabhai Patel Stadium in Valsad, a quaint town almost midway between the traditional home grounds of both the teams, Wasim Jaffer’s Mumbai outfit was far from a confident lot. The rhythm during the pre-match training was somehow missing. One felt that on the back of a mediocre run in the last three games, Mumbai was the side under pressure. The fragility was so obvious that Gujarat captain Parthiv Patel pronounced what every opposition captain avoids even thinking, let alone speaking, ahead of their match against the 40-time Ranji champions. “Obviously we are confident that we can defeat this Mumbai unit,” Patel said.Tremors in the Mumbai camp were understandable as they enter the game as one of the most inexperienced Mumbai units. Barring stand-in captain Jaffer, not one player has played two full seasons for the outfit. Sachin Tendulkar has retired. Zaheer Khan, Rohit Sharma and Ajinkya Rahane have been donning the national colours. Abhishek Nayar and Dhawal Kulkarni have been sidelined due to injuries. All this culminated in Mumbai, who were topping the group charts at the midway stage when Zaheer was leading from the front, being far from assured of a place in the knockout stage.Going into the last league round, Mumbai have to first attain at least a first-innings lead, and then, depending on how Punjab are faring against Jharkhand, will have to determine whether an outright victory is a must for them to progress to the quarter-finals. Gujarat, on the other hand, find themselves in a more favourable scenario. All they require is to avoid an outright loss and they will be ensured of a place in the last eight. That, however, is slightly tricky considering the pitch in Valsad has recently been result-oriented. Only one of the last five matches played at the ground has been a draw.Mumbai’s list of injuries got bigger on the eve of the match as Siddhesh Lad, who has scored three fifties in his debut season, suffered a suspected disc injury while playing football during the team’s warm-up and was ruled out. Lad’s unavailability would further unsettle the combination of the visiting side.Gujarat, on the other hand, appears to be a far more settled team than the visitors, who have tried a whopping 22 players in the season so far. The trend of results at this venue is likely to continue. If Mumbai are to avoid being on the wrong side of it, which would all but put an end to their title defence, they will have to get the better of Gujarat’s blend of youth and seasoned campaigners. While Parthiv has been at his best with the bat, Venugopal Rao and Rakesh Dhurv have also been contributing handsomely all through the season. It has resulted in the job of the home-grown youngsters being made easier, and most of them have justified the faith that has been shown in them for a better part of the past two seasons. If they continue with the good work, they will not only keep their Ranji campaign alive, but also oust the defending champions from the tournament.

Zia, Shakeel guide Pakistan to second win

ScorecardPakistan Under-19’s bowling attack restricted England Under-19 to 168, before a 96-ball 63 from Saud Shakeel helped Pakistan to a three-wicket win in Abu Dhabi.Pacers Zia-ul-Haq and Irfanullah Shah led the attack for Pakistan, who after electing to field, bundled England out in 43 overs. The opener Ryan Higgins top-scored with 80 off 84 balls, but received little support from the rest of the batsmen. Zia finished with 3 for 32, while Shah and Karamat Ali chipped in with two wickets each to run through an England batting order in which seven of their players failed to get into double digits.England made a bright start during the chase as the seamer Josh Shaw picked up three early wickets to leave Pakistan rattling at 39 for 4 in the 11th over. But Imam-ul-Haq and Shakeel led the recovery, adding 71 for the fifth wicket, before the former fell for 49 in the 31st over. Saifullah Khan was immediately dismissed in the next over, but Shakeel and Zafar Gohar contributed 53 for the seventh wicket to all but seal Pakistan’s second straight win of the tournament.

Jesse Ryder has been recalled to New Zealand colours for the first time since February 2012 as part of a 13-man squad for the one-day series against West Indies.Elsewhere in the squad, Martin Guptill has returned from injury and will partner Ryder at the top of the order, meaning that Tom Latham misses out. Tim Southee will miss the first two matches of the series to have a toe problem dealt with, but is expected to return for the third ODI in Queenstown.Ryder has not played at international level after being dropped for disciplinary issues during the one-day series against South Africa. He has since had to serve a six-month suspension for taking banned stimulants, a period which coincided with his recovery from the serious assault he suffered in Christchurch earlier this year.Bruce Edgar, the national selector, said it was a credit to his perseverance that he has responded to so many setbacks. “He’s in great form and he’s in a great space. Go back a number of months ago and it could have been the end of his career. He’s come back with a vengeance and wants to play well and play for the Blackcaps, and that’s what we want.”Since returning to domestic cricket for Otago, following a move away from Wellington, he has scored 454 runs at 64.85 in four Plunket Shield matches. There has been understandable caution about Ryder’s return to the New Zealand fold, but Ryder is now ready to put a tough period behind him.”I set the goal to make it back earlier this year and it is a great end to a tough year for me,” Ryder said. “I’m more motivated than ever to perform for the Blackcaps.”And there won’t be any extra safety nets put in place for Ryder’s return. “Jesse is in the team environment so there’s plenty of support in that environment,” Edgar said.It has also been confirmed that Luke Ronchi will have the wicketkeeping gloves throughout the series. Last week Mike Hesson, the New Zealand coach, confirmed that Brendon McCullum’s days as a wicketkeeper were over due to his back problems.Adam Milne, the 21-year-old Central Districts pace bowler, who was part of the squad in Sri Lanka has been retained despite not taking a wicket in those three matches.Squad: Brendon McCullum (capt), Corey Anderson, Martin Guptill, Mitchell McClenaghan, Nathan McCullum, Kyle Mills, Adam Milne, Colin Munro, James Neesham, Luke Ronchi, Jesse Ryder, Ross Taylor, Kane Williamson
