Speaking in an interview with , McTominay reflected on his first season in Italy and what it meant to him to become a Serie A champion. He said it was the highlight of his career so far, trumping the FA Cup and EFL Cup trophies he won with former club United. The 28-year-old arrived in a deal worth a reported £25.7 million (€29.6m/$34.5m) last summer and stood out for his new club, winning the Serie A Player of the Year award.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

There is a growing belief that scrutinised United players need to step away from the club to revive their careers elsewhere. McTominay is often cited as a prime example and the player is evidently in agreement that his career has reached new heights since he arrived in Naples, where he hit a career-high 13 goals in his first season.

  • WHAT MCTOMINAY SAID

McTominay said: "Settling into Serie A was made very easy by coach [Antonio] Conte and my team-mates, who have been fantastic with me from the very first moment I arrived."

On Serie A title glory, he said: “It was the best moment of my career. I couldn’t have dreamed of anything better. I did an interview four months ago and told the Neapolitans I wanted to bring them the league title, and through hard work – we did it. The target was very important, but now we have to focus on the new season and we have to do it again. Great teams and great players are always hungrier and I will do my best for this team. We have a lot of matches this year and a great group."

Speaking about Napoli's open-top bus parade, he added: "It was amazing – I didn’t expect anything like that! All the support was incredible, to be honest. Billy and I sat at home afterwards, took a breath, and just said ‘Wow!’ The credit for the Scudetto goes to the team, to the coach of course, but above all to the fans, they were the 12th man all season long. They were there in good times and bad. Even when we had tough moments, they helped us."

    WHAT NEXT FOR MCTOMINAY?

The Scotland midfielder will soon begin his second season with Napoli and will get to compete in the Champions League in addition to challenging for a second Scudetto. United may continue to regret selling him, though the move seemed like the right decision for both player and club at the time.

Bazball vs India's spinners, or Bazball vs England's spinners?

Big picture

Bazball vs spin. It promises to be the story of these five Tests, and it might be a story of parallel plots. There is, of course, Bazball vs India’s spinners. But perhaps even more relevant to England’s chances is the question of Bazball vs England’s spinners. What? Hang in there. All will be explained.England’s spinners conceded roughly 18 runs more per wicket than India’s did during the 2016-17 tour, and 12 runs more per wicket – on far spicier pitches – in 2020-21. Even if Bazball manages to inflate the averages of India’s spinners on this tour, it’s hard to see it translate into results if England’s spinners can’t bridge the gap in the other direction.Related

Alastair Cook and Kevin Pietersen batted magnificently in 2012-13, but England won that series primarily because Monty Panesar, Graeme Swann and James Anderson outbowled a transitional India attack. Since then, Australia have been the only team to come close to even drawing a Test series in India; they came as close as they did in 2016-17 and 2022-23 because their bowlers came close to matching the skill and discipline of R Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja. Can England find a way to do this? They’ve named their XI for the first Test in Hyderabad, which begins on Thursday on a pitch that looks dry and selectively watered, and that XI includes three frontline spinners. Those spinners have played played 36 Tests between them, of which Jack Leach accounts for 35.Hardly Swann and Panesar, then. It’s a selection that reflects a broader reality – spin occupies a narrow and an ever-shrinking space in 21st century County cricket – and England can only choose from what they have. It means that the odds are stacked against them at the start of another India tour, but do not bet against Brendon McCullum and Ben Stokes finding a way to make things interesting.

In the spotlight

Shubman Gill finds himself at an interesting juncture in his Test career, seeking to establish himself in a new role at No. 3 while still finding his feet in the format. There’s no doubting his talent, and his average of 30.58 after 20 Tests is partly down to the bowler-friendly pitches he has usually had to play on, but he’ll feel under some pressure as Virat Kohli, who has opted out due to personal reasons, might return after the second Test. Gill endured a torrid series the last time England toured India, averaging 19.83 and falling five times in seven innings to fast bowlers. He’ll want to show an improved defence against conventional and reverse swing this time, and ensure he’s around for the notionally bigger challenge of scoring runs against spin.Talk of spin has dominated the lead-up to this match, but England will not be unaware that Umesh Yadav, Jason Holder and Shannon Gabriel shared 18 wickets in the last Test played in Hyderabad. That may have been more than five years ago, and an entirely different surface may have been prepared for this game, but if there’s bounce on offer – as there was in 2018 – then Mark Wood could find a way to make it his ally.

Team news

After keeping wicket for the first time in his Test career on the recent tour of South Africa, KL Rahul will return to being a specialist batter, though he will remain in the middle order. KS Bharat, who kept in all four Tests of India’s last home series, seems likely to return to the XI ahead of the uncapped Dhruv Jurel, though Rohit Sharma didn’t give a definitive answer to this question in his pre-match press conference. Axar Patel’s batting and encouraging recent form with the ball is likely to earn him selection as third spinner ahead of Kuldeep Yadav. With Kohli out, India are spared the headache of leaving out one of Rahul, Gill and Shreyas Iyer.India (probable): 1 Rohit Sharma (capt), 2 Yashasvi Jaiswal, 3 Shubman Gill, 4 Shreyas Iyer, 5 KL Rahul, 6 Ravindra Jadeja, 7 KS Bharat (wk), 8 Axar Patel, 9 R Ashwin, 10 Jasprit Bumrah, 11 Mohammed SirajBen Foakes will keep wicket for England in Hyderabad•Getty Images

England have made a similar decision to India in handing the big gloves to their best pure keeper in Ben Foakes, and letting Jonny Bairstow focus on his batting.England: 1 Zak Crawley, 2 Ben Duckett, 3 Ollie Pope, 4 Joe Root, 5 Jonny Bairstow, 6 Ben Stokes (capt), 7 Ben Foakes (wk), 8 Rehan Ahmed, 9 Mark Wood, 10 Tom Hartley, 11 Jack Leach

Pitch and conditions

With the World Test Championship points structure putting extra pressure on teams to win games, teams around the world have taken to preparing bowler-friendly pitches. This, in India, has meant tracks that turn from day one, and Hyderabad is unlikely to buck this trend, with the pitch sporting distinctly dry-looking strips at either end on a spinner’s good length. The weather is expected to be clear and pleasant, with daytime temperatures in the high 20s (Celsius).R Ashwin (490) and Ravindra Jadeja (275) begin the series with an eye on Test wicket milestones•PTI

Stats and trivia

  • Ashwin (490) and Jadeja (275) begin the series with an eye on Test wicket milestones.
  • Joe Root (2526) is only ten runs away from surpassing Sachin Tendulkar as the highest run-getter in Tests between England and India. Root already has the most centuries (nine) in these contests, and averages 63.15.
  • Leach will look to build on a solid first tour of India in 2020-21, during which he took 18 wickets in four Tests at 28.72. He will be pleased that India are without Rishabh Pant, who hit him for 88 runs in just 59 balls during that series, while only being dismissed once.
  • India are going into a Test match without either Kohli, Cheteshwar Pujara or Ajinkya Rahane in their XI for the first time since November 2011.

Quotes

“By no means whatever record we have in the past decade or so gives us the guarantee that we are going to come out here on top as well, and win the series. We still have to play our best cricket – good cricket that we know that we play in these conditions… The last team to beat us here in our conditions was England. I wouldn’t say we are not beatable. Definitely we are. We want to think that if we don’t step up or if you don’t show up, well, we are going to find ourselves in trouble.”
“I don’t necessarily think it’s bold or brave, it’s just me and Baz looking at the wicket and picking the XI that we think will give us the best chance. That’s the XI we’ve gone with. It’s very exciting for Tom Hartley to make his Test debut. Looking forward to seeing him out there, and captaining him. He’s been very impressive in the buildup in Abu Dhabi. It’s a team based around what we think will give us the best chance of winning this game.”

Rohit feels India were not 'brave enough' in Hyderabad chase

“When you are put against a wall, you need to show character and you need to be brave enough, which I thought we weren’t”

ESPNcricinfo staff28-Jan-20242:26

Manjrekar: Indian batters found wanting temperamentally

Rohit Sharma feels India were not “brave enough” in their second innings and they “overall failed as a team” as they went down by 28 runs in Hyderabad.”When you are put against a wall, you need to show character and you need to be brave enough, which I thought we weren’t,” Rohit said on the official broadcast after India went 1-0 down in the five-Test series. “We wanted to take some chances… we didn’t take chances with the bat. But that can happen.”With India taking a massive 190-run first-innings lead, the idea that England would finish on the winning side was more than a bit far-fetched. However, Ollie Pope produced an epic 196 off 278 balls to take England to 420 in their second dig and gave them a 230-run lead, which proved just enough.Related

Ollie Pope sweeps England out of deep trouble

Rohit said that Pope’s knock was “probably the best” he had seen in Indian conditions by an overseas batter, but felt that the target was by no means ungettable on a surface not doing too much.”You got to take your hat off and say ‘well played’ to Ollie Pope. That was some serious knock,” Rohit said. “Having gotten the lead of 190, we thought we were very much in the game, but then… exceptional batting, probably the best that I have seen in Indian conditions by an overseas batter.”Ollie Pope played a brilliant knock. I definitely thought 230 was gettable, there wasn’t too much in the pitch, but we didn’t bat well enough to get to the score.”This is only the third time overall – and the first time at home – that India have lost a Test match after securing a first-innings lead in excess of 100 runs. Was India’s bowling to blame for the loss in Hyderabad then?”I went and checked where we bowled [after the third day], and I thought we bowled in the right areas,” Rohit said. “When you finish the day, you analyse: what went well, what didn’t go well, and things like that. We went back and saw things; we spoke about [them] and I thought the bowlers executed the plan really well.”Hard to look at one or two things. Overall we failed as a team. I thought after the first innings of their batting and our batting I thought we were very much in the game. We didn’t bat well enough to get to that score [in the second innings].”Rohit also had praise for India’s lower-order batters, who hung around to give them hope late on the fourth day. India were at 119 for 7 in the 41st over and a swift end was on the horizon. But KS Bharat and R Ashwin strung a 57-run stand off 130 balls for the eighth wicket. Even Jasprit Bumrah and No. 11 Mohammed Siraj hung around for 37 balls, adding 25 runs, but could not take the game into the final day with Siraj falling in the last over of an extended day to give Tom Hartley his seventh wicket of the innings and spark celebrations in the England camp.”I wanted them to take the game to the fifth day; 20-30 runs anything is possible,” Rohit said. “The lower order fought really well, and showed the top order that you need to fight it out. It is the first game of the series. I hope the guys can learn from that.”

Bayern Munich or Borussia Dortmund? Bundesliga duo may end up in battle to land sporting director with Max Eberl under pressure at Bavarian giants

Both Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund may soon go head-to-head in a bid to secure Markus Krosche with his track record drawing serious interest.

Bayern and Dortmund are targeting KroscheKrosche’s transfer record at Frankfurt has elevated his profileKrosche’s transfer record is nearly €300m in salesFollow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱WHAT HAPPENED?

According to and multiple other outlets, both Bayern and Dortmund have expressed concrete interest in appointing Eintracht Frankfurt’s Krosche as sporting director. Pressure is mounting on Bayern’s current sporting director Max Eberl following a series of failed transfer pursuits and internal discussions about the club’s future direction. Dortmund, meanwhile, are considering Krosche as a replacement for Sebastian Kehl. Both clubs are closely monitoring the situation, and Krosche’s contract is believed to contain a release clause.

AdvertisementGettyWHAT IS THE BACKGROUND?

Krosche has been Frankfurt’s sporting CEO since 2021 and has been instrumental in the club’s recent successes, including their Europa League triumph in 2022 and securing Champions League qualification. Dortmund explored a move for Krosche during their sporting crisis last season, but negotiations reportedly stalled as he chose to focus on Frankfurt’s campaign. Bayern’s recent transfer struggles – including big-money pursuits of Nick Woltemade and Luis Diaz – have put Eberl’s position under increased scrutiny. Internal tension and restructuring discussions at Bayern mean significant changes remain possible before the transfer window closes.

DID YOU KNOW?

Krosche has a proven record of engineering lucrative transfers. Under his leadership, Frankfurt generated nearly €300m (£255m/$327m) in transfer revenue from relatively unknown players such as Randal Kolo Muani, Omar Marmoush and Hugo Ekitike. His knack for spotting talent and negotiating high-value deals has made him a sought-after executive across Europe, with Premier League interest previously reported.

His name has already been mentioned in the supervisory board, but there are also doubts about his suitability for the job in Munich despite his impressive numbers.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

The German international did not join the Barcelona squad on their pre-season tour of Asia after undergoing surgery on his lower back. The situation further strained his relationship with the club, as reports emerged that the goalkeeper released an individual statement about the procedure without informing Barca beforehand. In his announcement, Ter Stegen stated he would be sidelined for three months — significantly less than the four to five months the club had anticipated. Barcelona were reportedly frustrated, as they had planned to submit medical documentation to La Liga estimating a longer recovery period (which they did this week). This would have allowed them to use 80 per cent of Ter Stegen’s salary to help register new signings under league financial regulations.

As for the captaincy issue, head coach Hansi Flick has already confirmed that he will not be making any decisions, leaving the responsibility on the first-team players, who are expected to conduct voting.

  • WHAT WAS SAID?

“For me, Marc is the captain of the team, just as he was last season,” De Jong told reporters. “Marc is a world-class player and has always given his all to the club, so I support Marc a lot, and from what I know, the team as well.”

Torres shared his thoughts, too, and provided his backing to the veteran goalkeeper. He said: “I don’t know if there will be a vote or not; we haven’t spoken, or at least I’m not aware of it, but Ter Stegen, just because of his experience and the years he’s been around, I think he’ll be captain.”
