Did Axar get his choice of bowlers at the death wrong?

“When you have 18-19 runs to defend in the last two overs, you give the 19th over to your best bowler,” Anil Kumble says

Can RCB and DC both finish in the top four?

Axar Patel has been getting positive reviews for his leadership in his debut season as captain in the IPL, but did he get it wrong against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) on Sunday night? RCB had the upper hand against Delhi Capitals (DC) as the match neared its closing stages but, as Anil Kumble, Wasim Jaffer and Sanjay Bangar pointed out after the game, shuffling the order of the bowler Axar used at the death might have made a difference. When the 17th over started, RCB needed 38 runs from 24 balls. Quite simple, ordinarily, but this wasn’t a pitch where run-scoring was easy. Mukesh Kumar bowled, and Krunal Pandya and Virat Kohli took 12 off him. Dushmantha Chameera gave away nine off the next. And then it was suddenly all over as Mukesh was hit for 6, 4, 4, 4 in the 19th by Tim David. Mitchell Starc had an over left. And Vipraj Nigam had bowled just one.”I don’t know [what DC were thinking]. When you have 18-19 runs [the requirement was 17 from two overs] to defend in the last two overs, you give the 19th over to your best bowler, to take it till the end,” Kumble said on ESPNcricinfo’s Time Out show. “I was surprised that he gave the ball to Mukesh and not Starc. The result might have been the same, but the intent was wrong.”Related

The intent was likely to give Starc eight-nine runs to defend off the last over, perhaps because of what he had achieved in that thriller against Rajasthan Royals (RR).”It must be the hangover from the [game against RR]. Axar must have thought that since Starc had defended nine runs in that last over, so let’s give this to Mukesh and see,” Bangar said. “It might have worked, but the thought process was wrong. Your best bowler should have bowled that over. Even if Starc had conceded, say, 12 runs, you have a legspinner [Nigam] for the last over if you don’t want to bowl Mukesh. Spinners sometimes create magical moments. It was a mistake on Axar’s part.”Was there a lack of faith in Nigam’s abilities, perhaps? Nigam is a newbie, but hasn’t done badly in his debut season for DC, with nine wickets so far at an economy rate of 9.34. But in nine games, he has bowled only 23 overs out of a possible 36. The left-handed and in-form Krunal’s presence in the middle might have forced Axar to ignore the legspinner.”I felt he [Axar] didn’t show enough trust in Vipraj,” Jaffer said. “Maybe he could have been given two-three overs too. Maybe it could have had an effect. Because at that stage [if a wicket had fallen], two overseas batters [David and Romario Shepherd] would have been there and they might have found it tough. Jitesh [Sharma] was the main batter left then.”Fortunately for DC, the loss hasn’t pushed them out of the race for the playoffs. They are still at No. 4 with six wins out of nine. Their next three games are against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) and Punjab Kings (PBKS) – the first two are among the bottom-four teams on the table, and PBKS have also been up and down, so DC would back themselves to win more often than they lose before their last two games, tough assignments against Mumbai Indians (MI) and Gujarat Titans (GT).

Woakes took six wickets in his recent county comeback from an ankle injury while Tongue featured in England’s innings win over Zimbabwe

ESPNcricinfo staff04-Jun-2025Josh Tongue and Chris Woakes have been handed the chance to show they should be in England’s team for the first Test against India after they were named in the Lions squad for Friday’s tour match in Northampton.Tongue featured in England’s innings win over Zimbabwe at Trent Bridge last month and has been added to the squad to face a strong India A side, which featured several Test players in the first tour match in Canterbury last week. England’s seam stocks took a significant blow on Tuesday with the news that Gus Atkinson is a major doubt for the first Test, which starts on June 20 at Headingley, after straining his hamstring against Zimbabwe. Mark Wood (knee) has already been ruled out of the series, while Jofra Archer (thumb) will not be match fit until the second Test at the absolute earliest.Woakes and Tongue will be competing for spots in the seam attack with Brydon Carse, Matthew Potts and Sam Cook, with Shoaib Bashir set to continue as the frontline spinner and Ben Stokes contributing as an allrounder. Stokes previously floated the prospect of playing for the Lions at Northampton if required, but did not feature in the 13-man squad named on Wednesday. The Lions are missing Sonny Baker (ankle) and Josh Hull (bruised heel) from their initial squad, while Zaman Akhter, Henry Crocombe and Dan Mousley have been released to play for their counties in the T20 Blast. Jordan Cox has been added to the squad as he continues his recovery from a side strain, while Rehan Ahmed has linked up with England’s T20I squad.Karun Nair pushed his case for selection with his first-innings 204 in the first tour match at Canterbury, which fizzled out into a high-scoring draw. KL Rahul and Akash Deep are both expected to feature for them in Northampton, though Sai Sudharsan and new Test captain Shubman Gill are now due to travel with the main squad on Friday.England Lions squad: James Rew (capt & wk), Farhan Ahmed, Jordan Cox, Rocky Flintoff, Emilio Gay, Tom Haines, George Hill, Max Holden, Ben McKinney, Eddie Jack, Ajeet Singh Dale, Josh Tongue, Chris Woakes.

Ulreich, Seaman, Hart & the costliest goalkeeping errors in football history

After Sven Ulreich's howler against Real Madrid on Tuesday, Goal looks back at the biggest mistakes ever made by the game's supposed guardians

    Sven Ulreich

A simple back pass from Corentin Tolisso should have been easy for Sven Ulreich to deal with, but the Bayern Munich goalkeeper only realised at the last second that he could not use his hands to collect the ball.

As Manuel Neuer's understudy tried to readjust and clear with his right foot, he slipped and allowed Karim Benzema to nip in and score the goal that decided an engrossing Champions League semi-final clash in Real Madrid's favour.

    Robert Green

Clint Dempsey's long-range shot in this 2010 World Cup group stage game should have been easily stopped by Robert Green but the England No.1 made a meal of the American's effort, allowing the ball to skip over his hands and into the back of the net.

The Three Lions drew 1-1, finished second, behind the United States, and were then eliminated by Germany. Things could have been so different, had Green made what should have been a routine stop.

    Dida

With Liverpool trailing 3-1 to AC Milan in the 2005 Champions League final in Istanbul, Vladimir Smicer let fly from range.

The effort, though powerful, was close to Dida, but he was unable to keep it out, instead pushing it into the bottom corner.

We all know what happened next, as the Reds went on to equalise, and win the ensuing penalty shoot-out.

Peter Shilton's mistake in a World Cup qualifier against Poland in 1973 was preceded by an error from defender Norman Hunter, as he lost the ball in defence.

Bresnan upbeat on Ashes fitness

Tim Bresnan has become the third England player in quick succession to insist that he will recover from injury in time for the Ashes series. Bresnan’s optimism about his recovery from an elbow operation follows equally upbeat assurances from Graeme Swann and Kevin Pietersen with the first Test against Australia now less than 100 days away.Bresnan’s second operation on his right elbow caused him to miss the tour to New Zealand, but he is aiming to play in Yorkshire’s friendly against Lancashire, beginning on April 16, and proving his fitness in championship cricket ahead of the first Test of the summer against New Zealand in mid-May.The latest top international to chat at length on Alison’s Tea Break, soon to be published exclusively on ESPNcricinfo, Bresnan admits he knew that his elbow trouble had left him down on pace for much of the previous year but was reluctant to face the consequences of another operation.”I was lacking a little bit of pace for the last year, which was something I didn’t really want to admit to myself,” he said. “One day I’d bowl brisk, and the next day I’d just have nothing. I knew it was the elbow but you’re in that position ‘I’m still doing a job but am I doing it to the best of my ability?’ And the answer to that question was probably ‘no’.”I’m actually excited now about the future, whereas, because I was bowling in a little bit of pain, it’s always in the back of your mind that you’re not giving it the full beans because it might hurt you.”It took a heart to heart with Graham Gooch in India for Bresnan to realise he had to speak up about his elbow pain, in order to avoid his career flatlining.”You just can’t get away with it against India. Here against the West Indies, absolutely fine, because it’s swinging, bit of reverse, maybe a bit of nibble. In India: nothing. There’s no hiding.”I think the time during the first Test when Sehwag just picked me up off a good length and hit me for six, I just went: ‘Wow, I’m not bowling quick enough here’. I think it was Goochie in a way who just said: ‘Look mate, I can tell you’re not right. I don’t know what you’ve been saying to the medical staff but you should be at a place now where you’re approaching your peak but you’ve just levelled off a bit’.”Now that he’s looking to make a comeback in the England side, Bresnan explains what sort of bowler he wants to be, why he can be more than the dependable workhorse in the side, and what it is that is motivating him.”I’ve only got six or seven five-fors. You never put me down for a truck load of wickets but stick me down for three an innings, which in anyone’s money is solid going. But if I want to be remembered as a cricketer, I was erring towards the stage where I was like, I don’t really want it to be that, I want it to be like: ‘He can win you games’.”Bresnan also takes a tongue-in-cheek ‘Yorkshire Test’ to see just how close to his roots he has remained, despite the global jet-setting life of an international cricketer. The results may be a little surprising.

Star-studded teams step into fray

Preview of the second game of IPL 2013, between Royal Challengers Bangalore and Mumbai Indians

The Preview by Siddhartha Talya03-Apr-2013Match factsThursday, April 4, 2013
Start time 2000 (1430 GMT)Lasith Malinga will miss the opening game for Mumbai Indians•AFP

Big PictureHow loyalties and allegiances change in the IPL. Anil Kumble’s association with Royal Challengers Bangalore was long and high-profile, as a player, captain, and mentor. He is known to have played a critical role in team strategy, selections, auction picks, all for a team representing his hometown. He is in the opposing camp now, hired by Mumbai Indians as their team mentor, and will have to plot against a side he helped strengthen over five seasons on his home ground. An immediate problem to address for Kumble’s team is the absence of Lasith Malinga from the opening game due to injury. A prized asset of the Mumbai side, Malinga is still recovering from a sore back he suffered during the home series against Bangladesh. His replacement apart, Mumbai can compensate for that loss with runs from a power-packed batting line-up, though it’ll be interesting to see if Sachin Tendulkar and his opening partner [there were as many as eight last season] are able to retain their combination for a good part of the season. The Royal Challengers are among the most passionately followed teams in the IPL and, for a tournament centred on the concept of city loyalties, Bangalore has lapped up its team like no other. But the title has proved elusive, despite twice having made the final. Led by Virat Kohli this season, Royal Challengers have as many as 15 seamers in their squad – though one of them, Zaheer Khan, is ruled out of the opening match with a side strain. It could be said that Kumble’s inputs may have made their job easier had he not switched over, but how they manage their personnel is one of several potential challenges this season could throw up.Players to watchIs Glenn Maxwell worth a million dollars? He was the only million-dollar buy at the 2013 auction, then had a lacklustre Test series in India, and didn’t have a great World Twenty20 before he was bought. His purchase is a gamble, and it remains to be seen to what extent his all-round skills are able to justify, or undermine, the team’s decision. From doing the moonwalk to gangnam style, classy celebrations to banter with opposition players, Chris Gayle has loosened up significantly since we first saw him in 1999 when he took on India in Toronto. His demeanour on the field aside, he has been a pivotal player for Royal Challengers with his explosive batting at the top, and has endeared himself to his fans, not just by treating them to airshows at the Chinnaswamy Stadium but winning their admiration despite giving them a bloody nose, literally, and landing them in hospital.2012 head-to-headGayle was the architect of a big win over Mumbai last season at the Wankhede Stadium, as Royal Challengers eased home by nine wickets. Mumbai then won a close game at the Chinnaswamy Stadium less than a week later, with Ambati Rayudu and Kieron Pollard guiding them to victory in a tight chase.Stats and trivia Malinga is among the few bowlers to have kept Gayle quiet in the IPL. R Ashwin is another. Malinga has bowled 39 balls to Gayle in the IPL, conceding 36 runs that included five fours. Against Ashwin, Gayle has scored at a run a ball in the IPL – 33 off 33. At the very least, Gayle could become the second-highest run-getter in all T20 cricket. He is currently on 4804 runs, just 17 behind David Hussey. Brad Hodge leads the list with 5274. Quotes”We do have a lot of options to pick from, with as many as 11 specialist pacers and four seaming all-rounders. Of course there are a few players who are coming off injuries, like Daniel Vettori (ankle injury).”

“We are all friends for the next few months. That’s one thing I have made very clear to the guys already. We are one. The Mumbai Indians are one.”

Dwayne Smith back at Sussex for T20

Dwayne Smith, the West Indies allrounder, has been re-signed by Sussex as an overseas player for the Friends Life t20

ESPNcricinfo staff07-May-2013Dwayne Smith, the West Indies allrounder, has been re-signed by Sussex as an overseas player for the Friends Life t20. Smith previously played in all formats for the county on a Kolpak agreement in 2008 and 2009, then as an overseas T20 signing the following year.Smith hit 59 from 26 balls to help Sussex to victory in the 2009 Twenty20 Cup final, part of a limited-overs double with the Pro40 league, which they also won in 2008. Smith, 30, who is currently playing in the IPL for Mumbai Indians, will join former New Zealand international Scott Styris as Sussex’s overseas players, after a deal for John Hastings fell through.”I’m very happy to be joining Sussex again,” Smith said. “I can’t wait to get back to my second home and the lovely crowd at Hove.”Having played 87 ODIs, to go with 10 Tests and 17 T20 internationals, Smith last week missed out on selection for West Indies’ Champions Trophy squad. Sussex, who were beaten semi-finalists in last season’s FLt20, will begin their campaign at home to Surrey on June 28.Sussex’s professional cricket manager, Mark Robinson, said: “Dwayne has the ability to win games by himself with the bat, he is a more-than-useful bowler and he is one of the best fielders ever to have been seen at Hove. He is immensely popular with the players, the members and the sponsors and everybody is excited about his return.”
