O time cruz-maltino enfrentará o Serra, do Espírito Santo, no Estádio Kleber Andrade, em Cariacica.

Bowling might takes Mumbai to No. 1

Mumbai have all but sealed a place in the top two after maintaining a clean sheet at home

The Report by Sidharth Monga15-May-2013
Scorecard and ball-by-ball details
On a slightly surreal night, Rahul Dravid lost his cool and shouted at the umpire, Kieron Pollard mocked Shane Watson so much he made him leave the dugout and go into the dressing room, Pollard was run out for the first time in the IPL, Mumbai Indians scored just 34 in the last five overs, but their bowling might won them the match comfortably and all but sealed a place in the top two. Mumbai and Chennai Super Kings now have one more win than Rajasthan Royals, and also a higher net run rate accumulated over 15 matches, which will take some doing to overcome.Mumbai might not have finished their innings well despite 59 off 37 balls from Aditya Tare, who had replaced the injured Sachin Tendulkar, but it was their start with the ball that eventually sealed the game. Two wickets each from Mitchell Johnson and Dhawal Kulkarni reduced Royals to their worst Powerplay score of all time: 29 for 4. Watson wasn’t one of those wickets, but he top-edged a Pragyan Ojha long hop before he could cause much damage.Royals were 58 for 5 in the 10th over when Watson fell but Brad Hodge, held back to No. 8, and Stuart Binny tried to put the chase on track, and even brought the equation down to 38 off three overs. However, Lasith Malinga bowled two of those overs and he went for five and eight in them.Royals could claim similar success with their bowling towards the end of the first innings, but the start wasn’t that good. Mumbai opened with the new pair of Tare and Glenn Maxwell, who weren’t pretty but were effective. After Maxwell for 23 off 17, Tare took over and went after all Royals bowlers without discrimination. However, he was only 24 off 15 when Dravid dropped a catch at short midwicket. He rubbed it in by pulling Binny over Dravid’s head next ball. When he finally fell, at 108 for 3 in the 13th over, Tare had set Mumbai up for possibly a score of 200. Some superb fielding and canny bowling from Royals, including Pollard’s run-out by Kevon Cooper and James Faulkner’s last two overs for just 11 runs, kept Mumbai down, but not for long.Having recovered from his poor game against Sunrisers Hyderabad, Johnson was creating breakthroughs at the top. In the first over, he might have got Dravid caught at the wicket without the edge, but it was a sharp bouncer nonetheless. Royals continued holding Watson back, and Mumbai kept running through the rest. When Watson finally arrived, Pollard started talking to him immediately. While Watson seemed furious, Pollard seemed to be laughing almost mockingly. Watson hadn’t even faced a ball. The umpires had to tell Pollard off, but he eventually had the final mock when Watson – under the pressure of falling wickets and rising asking rate – mis-hit Ojha to Pollard. After celebrating wildly, Pollard went to his boundary post and seemed to have another conversation with Watson, who sat in the dugout behind him.Eventually, Watson left the place in disgust, and finally Hodge got to bat when Royals lost another wicket. Royals needed 79 from 43 when he came in, but he and Binny brought the target down with sensible hitting. Hodge hit Ojha for four fours in the 16th over, which included a drop by Ambati Rayudu, but Malinga ensured Mumbai’s clean sheet at home.

Dhoni protected from tough questions

MS Dhoni was barred by the BCCI-appointed media manager from answering any question related to the alleged corruption issues during the Champions Trophy pre-departure press conference

Amol Karhadkar in Mumbai28-May-2013On the eve of the Indian team’s departure to England for the Champions Trophy – their first assignment after a controversial IPL – MS Dhoni was barred by the BCCI-appointed media manager, RN Baba, from answering any question related to the alleged corruption issues in the league. Each time a question about the controversy was put forth during the 14-minute interaction, Baba intervened. It appeared as though Baba, who is from the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association, was under strict instructions to not let the captain respond to any query that was remotely concerned with the controversy. Before the start of the press conference, Baba had announced that the interaction was “strictly pertaining to Champions Trophy and no other questions will be answered”. But considering the number of arrests that have been made in the last couple of weeks, including those of four first-class cricketers, the questions had to be asked.Four times Dhoni was asked to share his views on the alleged corruption issue. ‘What do you have to say about spot-fixing? Has there been an impact on players going into the Champions Trophy?’ ‘As the leader of the Indian cricket fraternity, why isn’t that we’ve not heard from you so far?’ ‘Can you guarantee Indian cricket fans that during the Champions Trophy, there will be no mischief on the field?’ ‘Do you know Vindoo Dara Singh personally?’Baba waited for each question to be completed before fending it off by saying, “next question, please.” Almost on every occasion, Dhoni’s face turned blank. Only once did he react with his trademark grin. This was in stark contrast to a usual Dhoni press conference that often ends up as a light-hearted interaction. But considering that Indian cricket is going through one of its most tumultuous phases that’s resulted in arrests of players, bookies, film actors and the BCCI president’s son-in-law, everyone who had congregated at a five-star hotel next to Mumbai’s international airport knew this was not going to be the usual freewheeling chat.Dhoni had evaded questions during the last week of the IPL at least three times, even skipping what used be a mandatory pre-match press conference for captains on the eve of the final. However, with the Indian team set to depart for England for participating in the last edition of the Champions Trophy, he had to face the media on Tuesday evening. Finally, a seasoned journalist diplomatically asked Dhoni whether the team would enter the Champions Trophy with an extra sense of responsibility – the last question of the interaction.”As cricketers, we always have that extra sense of responsibility with us,” Dhoni said. “It is our job to bring people into the arena and to encourage the youngsters who aspire to take up (cricket) as a livelihood and as professional cricketers. There is a responsibility on us and hopefully we can fulfill it to our potential.”

Struggling teams look to leave the bottom third

Big Picture

Teams usually go into the IPL targeting one win more than half the matches they play, and then take it from there. Nine has been the magic number all captains have been talking about. Defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders and Delhi Daredevils have played nine games each, and are six and seven wins away from that magic number. The phrase captains quote most is about doing things right and letting results take care of themselves. Knight Riders and Daredevils haven’t quite been able to do that so far. Knight Riders have relied on spin, but their local batsmen have let them down. Daredevils have the big names in both the batting and bowling department, but they haven’t fired as much as they would have liked. They don’t have much time left, and need to start winning consistently to keep the league interesting. The halfway point is way too early for teams to be ruled out of the playoff stakes.

In the spotlight

What has Twenty20 reduced Jacques Kallis to? In the last match, bogged down by his tournament strike rate of 106, with others failing to make up around him, he premeditated a ramp, and ended up playing from well wide of off with eyes nearly closed to get dismissed. He looks stylish when he bats, he is a classy batsman without doubt, but he shouldn’t have to resort to such ugly shots.Mahela Jayawardene, David Warner and Morne Morkel usually take the three overseas slots for Daredevils, but they haven’t been able to sort out their fourth foreign player. They have tried Andre Russell, Johan Botha, Jeevan Mendis, Ben Rohrer and Roelof van der Merwe without any success. Will they go a step ahead and play with eight Indian players?

Stats and Trivia

  • Gautam Gambhir is the second highest run-getter in all IPLs, behind Suresh Raina, but he has hit the most fours: 280.
  • In nine matches, Daredevils’ wicketkeepers put together have registered four dismissals, the worst per-match rate in the league.

Marcus Trescothick, the Somerset captain, has said he was “embarrassed” by his team’s performance against Sussex where they crumbled to an innings defeat in little more than four sessions at Horsham. They were bowled out before lunch on the first day for 76 and only crept into double figures second time around with 108. It was their third Championship defeat in six matches and they are seventh in table without a victory just three points clear of the relegation spots.”It’s not an easy performance to take, and I’m quite embarrassed by what we’ve done,” Trescothick told BBC Somerset. “We’ve got to try and turn it around. That’s all we can do.”I’m devastated. It’s a hard situation to be involved in and I’m not understanding why we’re playing like we are. We’ve got to find a solution. It’s been going on for a couple of games and we’ve not been near what we expect.”But there’s no easy answer. If I knew that we could put our finger on it and go from there.”Following the two-day defeat the squad had an extra training session at Taunton on Friday and their coach, Andy Hurry, echoed Trescothick’s sentiments about the performance. “Our professional pride is hurt and we are fully aware that we have underachieved and haven’t performed at all with the bat,” he told the club website.”We know its only a matter of time before we put in a performance and dominate a side, but when it does turn around we are going to hit somebody very hard, so we are in the process at the moment of trying to turn things around.”Somerset have been without Nick Compton in recent weeks due to England duty and Craig Kieswetter who broke a thumb against Warwickshire in April. Alviro Petersen, their overseas player, will soon join the South Africa squad for the Champions Trophy as a replacement for Graeme Smith. His countryman Dean Elgar has been signed as cover.Jos Buttler will be on one-day duty with England from next week and Somerset will hope that will coincide with Kieswetter’s return.Their next Championship match is against Yorkshire, at Taunton, starting on May 28.

Discarded Afridi vows to make comeback

Pakistan allrounder Shahid Afridi has vowed to make a comeback to Pakistan’s one-day squad, claiming that he is “better than most”. He was dropped from the side for the upcoming tours of Scotland, Ireland and England for the Champions Trophy in June, along with batsman Umar Akmal and fast bowler Sohail Tanvir.”The decision to drop me from the side is taken by the captain (Misbah-ul-Haq),” Afridi told the . “It isn’t a big thing if the captain does not want a player but in cricket, being in and out is a one-off thing. It happens and I will soon come back.”I am still better than most. I know I have ample cricket left in me and I can represent Pakistan for the next few years. Players usually get dropped but I appeal to my fans to pray for me.”Afridi, 33, had been dropped from Pakistan’s squad for the ODI series in India in December 2012, but was chosen for the trip to South Africa because of his skill as a legspinner. He failed to take a wicket in 37 overs, though, and scored 126 runs in four innings with a high score of 88. Since the start of 2012, Afridi’s taken only 15 wickets in 21 ODIs, and five of those came in one game against Afghanistan. His batting average during this period was 19. He managed to score only 70 runs and take three wickets in four matches for his domestic side last month.”I have been training for the England tour. I want to insist once again that I will walk away before being a burden on the side but for a while I understand I have to work hard to come back,” said Afridi. However, Afridi could be playing Twenty20 games for Hampshire this season. Due to visa issues, he was forced to miss the T20 matches for the county last year. In 2011, he had a successful stint with the county, taking 17 wickets in 10 matches at 11.17.

BCCI suspends Gurunath pending investigations

ESPNcricinfo staff26-May-2013Gurunath Meiyappan, the top Chennai Super Kings official who was arrested by Mumbai Police on Friday night, has been suspended by the BCCI “from any involvement in the sport of cricket and in particular from any involvement with the Chennai Super Kings team” pending further investigations. In a release issued on Sunday morning, the Indian board said: “The BCCI has taken note of the detention by Mumbai Police of Gurunath Meiyappan, who is a member of the team management of Chennai Super Kings. As an accredited team official, Mr Meiyappan is subject to the provisions of the IPL operational rules and the BCCI anti-corruption code for participants. Pending further investigations and any subsequent hearing by the BCCI disciplinary committee or the IPL code of behaviour committee, Mr Meiyappan has been suspended by the BCCI.”Public prosecutor Wajid Sheikh, meanwhile, confirmed to news channel that “the evidence” against Gurunath till now only pointed to betting offences. “We have evidence of betting only at this stage. Only betting,” Sheikh said. “We want to investigate him for fixing also. Till today there is no proof, that which match, which player is fixed.”Gurunath’s family lawyer, PS Raman, said the charges against him were ambiguous and insignificant. “They [Mumbai Police] are yet to find out what he has done, so they have taken him in police remand. Now they say not spot-fixing or match-fixing, but betting,” Raman was quoted as saying in . “This is such a case that anyone can plead guilty and walk out by paying a fine of Rs 200.”It is such a small offense for which Meiyappan would not run away. The quantum of betting is irrelevant. Just because Meiyappan’s number was found in the phone does not mean that he is guilty. He has known Vindoo Randhawa for the past three years or so and was introduced to celebrities by the film actor.”Meanwhile, the BCCI confirmed that its president – who is also managing director of Super Kings’ owner, India Cements, and father-in-law of Gurunath – will address the press at 4pm on Sunday. The three Rajasthan Royals players, Sreesanth, Ajit Chandila and Ankeet Chavan, who were arrested on May 16 for alleged spot-fixing, will be produced in a Delhi court today as the stipulated period of their police custody runs out.
