Cross lifts up Lancashire again

ScorecardGareth Cross hit 64 to push Lancashire into a commanding position•Getty Images

Many more days like this and county cricket runs the risk of getting some rather decent publicity. In near perfect weather and on a good wicket Lancashire and Gloucestershire’s cricketers tussled for advantage in a game which neither side never completely bossed until the last hour of play.By then Glen Chapple’s batsmen were scoring more or less as they pleased against a tiring attack that was missing the left-arm spin of Ed Young, who has a wrist injury. At the close Lancashire’s lead was 327 runs and only some daft, ultra-cautious declaration will prevent them having a chance to force their third Championship win of the season on the final day.Perhaps the cricketer who personifies the search for hard-won advantage which this match has been all about is Gareth Cross. The Lancashire wicketkeeper-batsman made a hundred in his side’s last game against Hampshire but that game was as dead as last month’s Radio Times for a good proportion of his innings. More valuable was Cross’s 30 against Glamorgan or his 45 against Essex, both knocks which contributed important runs to eventual wins.On Friday, Cross signed up to do some more heavy lifting and this was all the more laudable given that he had been smacked in the mouth by the ball when keeping wicket in the morning session. Coming to the crease with Lancashire on 62 for 5, an advantage of a mere 150, and having lost five prime wickets to the Gloucestershire seam trio of Craig Miles, Liam Norwell and Graeme McCarter, Cross fought alongside Ashwell Prince – another cricketer who savours trench warfare – to build a potentially match-winning lead.Their 85-run stand had gone a long way towards achieving that goal when Prince chipped Benny Howell to Norwell at mid-off, but Cross then increased the tempo of the innings with Wayne White in some style. The pair added 67 in 12 overs before Cross was caught in the deep for 64 off the persevering Norwell. White completed his first fifty for Lancashire off 47 balls three overs before the close, but he would be the first to admit that Prince and Cross had earned him his licence to attack.”It was good to spend some time in the middle and continue from Hampshire,” Cross said. “I did a bit of work in the indoor nets in the winter on occupying the crease and, while I can play the shots, it’s also more risky to do that so I’m just trying to play to my ability. I’ve felt in good form all year and it’s nice to be making a contribution. If Ashwell or I had got out, we’d have been in trouble but he’s a calming influence and we played well, I think.”Yet each session of this day’s play produced players from each side whose qualities could be applauded by the good-sized crowd. In the morning Alex Gidman and Simon Kerrigan dominated proceedings, the Gloucestershire batsman completing his first Championship century of the season and the Lancashire spinner, bowling unchanged from the River End to take 5 for 40 in 14.2 overs.Indeed, at times the play constituted something of a duel befitting d’Artagnan et al, Gidman’s boundaries – he also hit Kerrigan and Kyle Hogg for sixes – being countered by the spinner’s wickets. Lancashire probably wanted something more than the 88-run first -innings lead they eventually gained whereas Gloucestershire entertained hopes of whittling the advantage down to less than 50. Both teams had to settle for less than their ideal; it made for splendid cricket.Gidman scored his century off 170 balls, hitting eight fours and two sixes in the process. On the point of lunch, he was caught by White at deep square leg off Kerrigan for 110. The large Liverpool crowd applauded him generously; his innings had determined the strength of Gloucestershire’s position. For his part Kerrigan finished with 5 for 68 in the innings and there is every chance he will add a few more on the final day of this game. If so, the name of Gareth Cross may be to the fore once again.

Amir could be allowed PCB training facilities

A five-member ICC sub-committee will look into relaxing certain conditions of the five-year ban imposed on Pakistan fast bowler Mohammad Amir after the spot-fixing scandal of 2010

Umar Farooq01-Jul-2013A five-member ICC sub-committee, which was set up after the 2013 annual conference to review the anti-corruption code, will also look into relaxing certain conditions of the five-year ban imposed on Pakistan fast bowler Mohammad Amir after the spot-fixing scandal of 2010. While the most stringent stipulations of the ban will still remain, the PCB has requested the ICC to consider a few concessions, especially with regard to Amir using the board’s facilities for training.A PCB spokesman told ESPNcricinfo: “The ICC, during the annual conference week, constituted a five-member committee that will review and recommend amendments to the ICC Anti-Corruption Code, and on recommendation from the PCB, will also provide its suggestions to the ICC board on the ban related to Mohammad Amir.” The ICC was unwilling to the reveal who would comprise the sub-committee.Regardless of the recommendation from the committee, Amir will not be able to play any kind of club, domestic, or international cricket and will not train with the national team. The only significant allowance that could be made is that he regain access to the training facilities offered by the PCB.ESPNcricinfo understands that the PCB made the request to the ICC only because Amir had complied with conditions of the ban: not committing any further breach of the anti-corruption code and undergoing the ICC’s educational and rehabilitation programme. Amir will be available for national selection from September 3, 2015, and the PCB sought the relaxation of some terms so that he could be ready to play as soon as his ban ends, rather than spend more months in training.Amir had not been aware of the PCB’s request but seemed content with anything that would help him return to cricket. He hasn’t been doing full-fledged training but has kept himself in good shape. By the time he completes his ban he will be 23. “I will come hard despite the five-year in-activeness,” Amir had told ESPNcricinfo last year. “I want to come back with my head held high, with a new spirit and as a role model.”Salman Butt, the Pakistan captain who was banned for ten years by the ICC on charges of spot-fixing during the Lord’s Test in 2010, had made a similar request in a personal capacity two days before the ICC’s annual conference. His case, however, was not accepted as it was believed that Butt had not fully complied with the ICC’s conditions.Butt had recently taken the first step in his rehabilitation by publicly admitting to and apologising for his part in the spot-fixing scandal. He also indicated his willingness to participate in the PCB and ICC’s rehabilitation programmes. Five out of Butt’s ten-year ban from any cricketing activities were to be a suspended sentence on condition that he would commit no further breach of the anti-corruption code and participate in a PCB-controlled anti-corruption education programme.Of the three players banned by the ICC before the criminal trial began in London – fast bowler Mohammad Asif being the third – only Amir had pleaded guilty to the charges at the Southwark Crown Court. Both Butt and Asif had pleaded not guilty and appealed their bans at the Court of Arbitration in Sport in Lausanne, Switzerland.

Foster 82 keeps Chelmsford festive

It’s City of Chelmsford Festival Week, and a good size crowd turned up in the hope of seeing some festival cricket. What they saw was an absorbing day of largely attritional play during which the advantage fluctuated between the sides, but there was little festive about it.One Simon Kerrigan over in mid-afternoon was a miniature of the big picture of the day. Ryan ten Doeschate lofted a big six over Simon Katich at long on, then tried to do it again and Katich took a straightforward catch. When Glen Chapple won the toss and chose to bowl he would have taken scores of 13 for 3 and 72 for 5, and he got them thanks to a morning of sustained excellence from his seam attack. But ten Doeschate and Essex captain James Foster led a recovery, as their side dominated the afternoon session.Chapple himself and Kyle Hogg bowled unchanged through the first hour and were such a handful that the top three totalled 11. Hogg bowls from very close to the stumps and was pacey and accurate, rarely giving the batsmen anything they could leave. At the River End Chapple found swing and nip off the pitch.Jaik Mickleburgh cut Hogg handsomely for four, then promptly edged him to third slip. Tom Westley could only manage 2 before Hogg trapped him on the crease, and one of those was an overthrow following a direct hit from a throw by Simon Katich as the batsmen took a quick single. Third to go was Hamish Rutherford, who was making his County Championship debut, caught behind off Chapple. As soon as Owais Shah arrived in the middle to face Lancashire’s second string seamers, batting began to look easier. But having got himself in he missed a straight ball from Luke Procter and things were looking rocky again. It fell to ten Doeschate and Foster to repair the damage and that’s what, in contrasting styles, they set about doing. Ten Doeschate was assertive and played powerful shots, while his captain was all busy footwork and strokeplay. It was only when Doeschate’s doomed second attempt to clear Simon Katich on the boundary that brought the partnership of 95 runs to an end.Foster received valuable support from Graham Napier and then Saj Mahmood, who was in a mood to swing the bat, while he continued to accumulate at the other end. But shortly before rain and bad light had the players leaving the field, Foster’s resistance ended.Although the early damage was done by the quick men, the bowling performance of the day was provided by the much-admired left arm spinner Kerrigan. Chapple threw him the ball for the first time a few minutes before lunch, and he bowled 23 economical overs in the day. Kerrigan uses flight and guile as well as spin, and it was flight that finally did for Foster, luring him into a shot that had him lbw.Given the start they had, Essex are likely to be content with a score which puts them in the game.

Srinivasan set to preside over working committee meeting

N Srinivasan is set to preside over the BCCI’s working committee meeting, two months to the day he said he would step aside as board president for the duration of the probe into the IPL fixing mess

Amol Karhadkar31-Jul-2013N Srinivasan is set to preside over the BCCI’s working committee meeting to be held in New Delhi on Friday, two months to the day he said he would step aside as board president for the duration of the probe into the IPL fixing mess. The committee that carried out that investigation submitted its report on July 28 but the manner in which it was set up was struck down two days later by the Bombay High Court as illegal and violative of the BCCI’s own constitution. However, that ruling, and the public outcry that followed it, seems to have left the BCCI president unfazed. A senior board official said public criticism wouldn’t affect the BCCI’s way of functioning.”The president had stepped aside till the probe was complete. Now that the probe is over, he has decided to return to action,” the official told ESPNcricinfo, requesting anonymity. “It doesn’t matter what the court has observed. Our legal cell will look into the matter.”The two-man committee was investigating charges against the holding companies of Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals besides Raj Kundra, the Royals co-owner, and Gurunath Meiyappan, senior management official of Super Kings and also Srinivasan’s son-in-law.Following the public uproar after arrests of three Royals cricketers and Meiyappan, Srinivasan had stepped aside, paving the way for former president Jagmohan Dalmiya to look after the BCCI’s day-to-day affairs. However, once the probe panel submitted its report to the working committee, it was clear that Srinivasan would officially return to power at the earliest. It remains to be seen if Dalmiya, who had admitted that the BCCI had been embarrassed due to the court order, is rewarded for handling the board’s affairs over the last two months.Dalmiya, for his part, was quoted by as saying he was clueless about what was happening in the BCCI. “I’m totally in dark about what’s happening at the board. I’ve not been communicated anything. I’m just hearing all these in news reports,” he said. “Perhaps I’ll find out after going there for the working committee meeting in New Delhi.”

Ansiedade leva a empate

USA strip Taylor of captaincy for Auty Cup

USA’s Steven Taylor has been stripped off the senior team captaincy for the Auty Cup in Canada from July 25 to 28, and has been given a one-match suspension for transgressing the team’s curfew

USA’s Steven Taylor has been stripped of the senior team captaincy for his side’s tour to Canada for the Auty Cup from July 25 to 28, and has been given a one-match suspension after United States of America Cricket Association (USACA) announced on Tuesday that he had been involved in a breach of the team code of conduct and tour protocols last week, while on the USA U-19 tour to Canada for the ICC Americas U-19 Division One tournament.According to a USACA press release, the 19-year-old Taylor, along with team-mate Trevis Ross, 18, admitted to breaking the team’s 10pm curfew, when they went out drinking on July 12 and didn’t return until 2.30am the following day. Taylor took to Twitter to boast about his escapades in the early morning hours, posting a series of tweets from 1.28am until 2.19am which stated: “Random girl trying to get mi drunk lol”, “Shot after shot!!!!!!!!!” and “I’m drunk.”In addition to the tweets, Taylor posted an Instagram photo showing a bottle of rum with two full glasses, as well as a short Instagram video featuring him and Ross singing along to music being played in the background, while Taylor makes obscene gestures to the camera. The Instagram photo and video have since been removed. As part of USACA’s official statement, Taylor issued a formal apology: “I wish to publicly apologise to my team-mates, the US coaching staff, and to USACA for my actions,” Taylor said. “They were selfish and do not reflect the behaviour that the captain of a national team should display. I feel that I have let myself down and brought dishonor to the game and the US team. I am hopeful that I can learn from this mistake and make amends on and off the field during the Auty Cup.”USACA made the announcement on Tuesday after the team returned from the tour. USACA chief executive Darren Beazley met with Taylor before issuing the reprimand. Ross received a written warning for his involvement in the incident with USACA’s statement claiming he broke curfew, but was not drinking.”This incident is regrettable and out of step with the new direction for US cricket,” Beazley said. “To play cricket for this country is an enormous honour. If we are to progress to a performance-based culture in our high performance programmes, all players that represent the US must accept the responsibility that comes with wearing the national colors. Both players have made an error in judgment.”The fact that the transgression was not leading into a match day does not excuse the fact that players must give themselves every opportunity to perform at an optimal level, particularly in light of the fact that there was a place in the ICC Under-19 World Cup at stake. I am confident that Steven and Trevis will learn from this mistake and will respond in the best way possible by performing well in the coming months of the 2013 US cricket season.”No decision has been made as to who will take over as USA captain for the tour to Canada. Taylor had been named stand-in captain in place of Steve Massiah, who is one of several players unavailable due to work commitments. USA is scheduled to play a two-day game, one 50-overs match and two T20s as part of the tour.
