Ojha undaunted by West Indies' attacking approach

Pragyan Ojha, who took his sixth five-wicket haul, in his 24th Test, said he never felt threatened when the batsmen attacked him

Ajit Agarkar on India’s quicks: Upright seam an asset

When Shivnarine Chanderpaul came out to bat in his 150th Test, he danced down and chipped Pragyan Ojha for a six over midwicket first ball. India sent a fielder back to deep midwicket. In the next over, Chanderpaul swept him for four, and India had protection for that too. This was not a defensive move. It was just India knowing that West Indies didn’t have enough confidence in themselves to properly bat out time.India’s strategy remained the same to most of the West Indies batsmen except Marlon Samuels, with whom they probably felt the need to strike early because he could settle down and hurt India. When Mohammed Shami bowled to Samuels, India had four slips and a gully, but no boundary rider. With Chanderpaul, they knew they wouldn’t incur enough damage even if he batted till the end because he doesn’t hit out or farm the strike, and more often than not, the others don’t hang around.Ojha, who took his sixth five-wicket haul, in his 24th Test, to dismiss West Indies cheaply on the first day of the Test for the second time in the series, said he never felt threatened when the batsmen attacked him. “I think it’s very simple you know,” Ojha said. “In a Test match, when a batsman isn’t sure about his defence, he wants to go after you and disturb your line and length. I wasn’t thinking about what he was doing, I was just thinking about my bowling because I knew there was a lot of bounce in the wicket, and if I keep hitting the right areas, it will be difficult for them.”Pragyan Ojha’s sixth five-wicket haul helped bundle West Indies out for 182•BCCI

And right areas Ojha hit. That the five-for came in Tendulkar’s last match made it more special, Ojha said. “It’s a great feeling, getting a five-wicket haul in a special Test match like this,” he said. “Always, getting a five-wicket haul in a Test match is a special feeling.” He dedicated the haul to Tendulkar.Ojha felt the pitch helped the spinners, as did his accuracy. “I think there was some bounce in the wicket and as the ball got older it started turning a bit,” Ojha said. “So it was all about sticking to your basics and keeping tight lines and length and putting pressure.”Ojha said he didn’t mind being overshadowed by Tendulkar’s 38 not out in the final session of the day. “Whatever it is, this Test match belongs to Sachin paaji,” Ojha said. “It’s a special one for all of us. Definitely we all want him to get a lot of runs in this special match, and I don’t mind getting overshadowed.”Ojha is one of the few India players who got some time off to go and play domestic cricket before the start of this season, and he is thankful for that. “I think all the credit goes to domestic cricket,” he said. “I always feel it’s important to go back to domestic cricket and perform there. If you perform there consistently, what our seniors have advised, is that the selectors will notice you.”

SLC may look beyond Atapattu, Davis for national coach

Sri Lanka Cricket’s hunt for the next national coach is not necessarily confined to its two-man shortlist of Marvan Atapattu and Mark Davis, CEO Ashley de Silva has confirmed

Andrew Fidel Fernando20-Nov-2013Sri Lanka Cricket’s hunt for the next national coach is not necessarily confined to its two-man shortlist of Marvan Atapattu and Mark Davis, CEO Ashley de Silva has confirmed.SLC had narrowed its field of candidates down to Atapattu and Davis on November 6, stating they would carry out a final round of interviews with these two applicants. However, while either man could still end up with the job, it is possible the SLC will look further afield, if the board’s executive committee deems it necessary. The committee appointed to nominate the next coach will present its proposals to the executive committee over the next fortnight, and at least one of those proposals precludes both Atapattu and Davis from the position. De Silva, who is part of the coach-nomination committee, said the committee would be “giving some options” to the executive committee.”The committee to nominate a coach met last week, and we will make our proposal to the executive committee,” de Silva said. “Once the executive committee ratifies something, we will release it to the press. The executive committee meeting will hopefully be sometime next week – the date has not yet been set.”SLC was underwhelmed with the 11 candidates who initially applied for the role, and kept its application process open long beyond the initial deadline. The board also approached several high-profile coaches, including Greg Chappell and Tim Nielsen who turned SLC down, while talks with Steve Rixon broke down, largely over the question of pay.The coach-nomination committee does not have a specific individual in mind, if neither Atapattu nor Davis are deemed suitable by the board. However, Dav Whatmore who coached Sri Lanka to a World Cup win in the first of his two stints with Sri Lanka, has recently become free, after the Pakistan Cricket Board chose not to extend his contract.Atapattu has been Sri Lanka’s batting coach since 2011, before he was promoted to the position of assistant coach in March this year. Davis is a relatively low-profile candidate, currently among the coaching staff at Sussex. He played first-class cricket in South Africa and England.Current coach Graham Ford finishes his tenure with Sri Lanka at the end of January, after the team’s away tour against Pakistan. He had opted not to renew his contract with SLC, citing family reasons.

McGarrell named USA captain for World T20 qualifier 2013

Neil McGarrell, 41, has been named USA’s captain in a 15-man squad for the 2013 World Twenty20 Qualifier next month in the UAE. McGarrell, who played four Tests and 17 ODIs for West Indies between 1998 and 2001, made his debut for USA in 2012 against Canada, and takes over from Steve Massiah, who had been captain for seven years. Massiah was retained in the squad along with Orlando Baker, who captained USA to an 8-0 record in a stand-in capacity at the 2013 ICC Americas Division One Twenty20 tournament in March.Adam Sanford, 38, and Imran Awan are also making their way into the squad as fast bowlers. Sanford, who played 11 Tests for the West Indies from 2002 to 2004, played for USA in a series of trial matches against Bermuda this past weekend, and is set to make his official debut for USA in their opening match against Canada in Abu Dhabi on November 15. Awan, once considered one of the fastest bowlers in the Associate world, hasn’t played for USA since 2010 after struggling with his accuracy.USA’s lack of experienced pace bowlers was apparent earlier this year during the ICC World Cricket League Division Three competition, where they finished third. Seamer Usman Shuja, who was dropped ahead of WCL Division Three, was not brought back into the squad for the tour to the UAE, though he had been included in a list of 28 probables in September. Timroy Allen has decided to return for USA after announcing his retirement following the end of WCL Division Three in May to focus on work and family commitments. Allen has subsequently been named vice-captain for the tour.Three players from USA’s tour of Bermuda for WCL Division Three earlier this year are not in the squad for the qualifier. USA’s batting will likely struggle in the absence of Sushil Nadkarni and Rashard Marshall. Nadkarni had to withdraw due to work commitments, and it is believed Marshall was unavailable for the same reasons. Medium pacer Naseer Jamali is the third player not retained. Only five players who played for USA at the ICC World Twenty20 Qualifier in 2012 – Baker, Muhammad Ghous, Elmore Hutchinson, Japen Patel and Steven Taylor – will be traveling back to the UAE in November.Besides Sanford, the only other player in the squad yet to play in an official match for USA is Srinivasa Santhanam. An allrounder originally from Tamil Nadu, Santhanam now plays for Microsoft Cricket Club in Seattle. The Pacific Northwest, and Microsoft CC in particular, has been a growing source of talent for the USA in recent years, with former USA spinners Samarth Shah and Saurabh Verma also hailing from the club, while Naseer Jamali plays in the Seattle area.USA has been placed in Group A along with Canada, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, Namibia, Uganda and the UAE. USA finished 12th at the qualifier in 2012, but posted a noteworthy upset of Scotland at the event. The top six teams in this year’s qualifier will advance to the 2014 ICC World Twenty20 in Bangladesh.USA Squad: Neil McGarrell (captain), Timroy Allen (vice-captain), Danial Ahmed, Imran Awan, Orlando Baker, Barrington Bartley, Akeem Dodson (wk), Karan Ganesh, Muhammad Ghous, Elmore Hutchinson, Steve Massiah, Japen Patel, Adam Sanford, Srinivasa Santhanam, Steven Taylor (wk).

WI blown away in a session for 103

West Indies’ entire second innings lasted less than a session after tea on the third day in Hamilton, leaving New Zealand a target of 122

The Report by Abhishek Purohit20-Dec-2013
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsTrent Boult took the first three West Indies wickets•Getty ImagesWest Indies had lost 16 wickets on the third day in Wellington to lose by an innings. If one thought their standards couldn’t plummet any further, one was to be proved wrong on the third day in Hamilton. In far friendlier conditions for batting than Basin Reserve, their entire second innings lasted less than a session. It began after tea, and ended so swiftly that New Zealand had time left to face a couple of overs in their second small chase of the series. It was supposed to be a test by spin for New Zealand, and Sunil Narine did as well he could, bowling 42.3 overs, 36 of them on the trot, to take 6 for 91. Ross Taylor batted through that examination to make his third hundred of the series and cut New Zealand’s first-innings deficit to 18. Both feats, outstanding as they were, were consigned to the sidelines by the depressingly familiar drama that West Indies served up after tea.Granted New Zealand’s four-man pace attack, three of them left-armers, were relentless with their tight lines and fuller lengths. Granted there was a bit of cloud cover that afforded some swing. Granted New Zealand came back from their sloppy catching in the first innings with some outstanding grabs. But the pitch was still the same slow one on which the sides had scored 367 and 349.After such scores, it was effectively a second-innings shootout. West Indies shot themselves in the foot instead. It was the same weakness again, an inability to tackle the inswing the left-armers were generating.Their left-handers kept poking at deliveries leaving them, even Shivnarine Chanderpaul falling prey to the malaise, and New Zealand kept snapping up sharp catches in the slip cordon, the highlight being Kane Williamson’s one-handed blinder at gully to send back Chanderpaul for 20 off Neil Wagner. The right-handers drove loosely at inswingers, they prodded at ones going straight across them, they even managed to get strangled down the leg side. The longest anyone lasted was Marlon Samuels, who made 8 off 38 deliveries. The most runs anyone made was captain Darren Sammy, who struck six fours in a hopelessly frenetic 24 off 17 to nudge West Indies into three figures.Like in Wellington, Trent Boult did most of the damage, removing the top three within nine overs on his way to 4 for 23. Wagner and Corey Anderson, a terrific second pair of seamers, kept up the pressure to prise out three more, and Boult returned to trap first-innings centurion Denesh Ramdin in front.Having watched the left-armers take the first seven wickets, Tim Southee helped himself to the final three in one over with his outswingers, also reaching 100 Test victims in the process. West Indies had been blown away for 103 in 31.5 overs, 12 leg-byes helping them scrape past 100.Before tea, Taylor finished with 28 more than 11 West Indies batsmen and the leg-byes put together to pilot New Zealand past 300. Brendon McCullum and Corey Anderson gave it away in the morning, aggression causing their downfall, while Taylor ticked along solidly and calmly, at his own pace, never in doubt.West Indies weren’t able to exert pressure to the extent they had on the second evening, when their specialist spinners Narine and Veerasammy Permaul bowled in tandem. Instead, Darren Sammy gave himself a spell of nine overs at the start, bowling alongside Narine as West Indies worked with the old ball throughout the session. Whatever pressure Narine exerted wasn’t maintained for long enough.Taylor carried on from the second evening, unruffled by the odd delivery misbehaving or by what was happening at the other end. Even as Narine jagged the odd straighter one past the bat, Taylor handled the offbreaks superbly, playing late and softly. West Indies took the second new ball in the 99th over, immediately after lunch, and the change earned them the wickets of BJ Watling and Taylor, who departed after taking 20 runs off Sammy in the 105th over.Wagner and Southee cut the deficit further but the tail could not survive too long against Narine, and he spun out the last three to go to 18 wickets from three Tests against New Zealand. The one over he bowled in the evening signalled that the target of 122 wouldn’t be chased down easily.West Indies had stopped New Zealand short of chasing 112 in Dunedin, but that was on the final day with assistance from rain. Narine is now their only hope, however slender, with two days left. For if you can’t bat, you can at least hope.

Back to familiar format after emotional farewell

Big Picture

Days after Sachin Tendulkar’s emotional farewell, India move on to the format in which they are now quite used to playing without him. Unlike in the Tests, the cricket will no longer be the sideshow. An India win can no longer be taken for granted.Only a few weeks ago, till the last Australia wicket fell in Bangalore, either set of batsmen could have edged the run-marathon of an ODI series. Over 3500 runs were scored in 11 innings; 350 threatened to permanently become the new 300. Did that series reveal to us the future of ODI cricket in India? Have bowlers been irreparably crippled in such conditions by the restriction of four deep fielders? The next three games will tell us more.MS Dhoni said his fast bowlers had been working hard on their variations, including yorkers, ever since the Australia series, to ensure they don’t leak too many runs at the death. India’s batsmen, as usual, will be confident of hunting down whatever their bowlers concede. Dhoni will hope Yuvraj Singh, who had a horror run amid the Australia run glut, is one of them.West Indies’ showing against the No. 1 ODI side will be interesting to track. They lost both Tests inside three days. They have been criticised for being drunk on T20 cricket. Their Test captain’s place in the team has been questioned for the umpteenth time.In the ODIs, they will be a led by a man who was not part of the Test squad, but has similar – many will argue superior – skills compared to the Test captain. What will Dwayne Bravo do in the ODIs that Darren Sammy couldn’t in the Tests? How will he lift the morale of a side thumped by an innings in both Kolkata and Mumbai?Bravo will at least have fresher men to choose from. Apart from a different leader, West Indies will also have different options on all fronts – batting, fast bowling, spin, wicketkeeping. Will all this translate into some sort of a challenge for India? The hosts won 4-1 the previous time the two played in India, in 2011, although West Indies ran them closer than the scoreline suggests. Getting on the board this time will be an achievement, after the embarrassment of the Tests.

In the spotlight

Chris Gayle had starts in each of his four innings in the Tests, but went past 35 in none of them. He is less likely to not convert a start in limited-overs cricket, although he has had a poor year in the format. Gayle averages 55.85 in India and, barring Zimbabwe, his ODI record in any other Test nation does not even come close. Six of his 22 innings in India have been centuries, which again shows how much he likes to bat in the country.Rohit Sharma has already scored more ODI runs this year than he did in the previous two years combined. Five days after hitting a double-century in Bangalore, he made a hundred on Test debut in Kolkata, and added another one batting with the No. 11 in Mumbai. Mindboggling is the word. And even during his fallow years, before his move to the top of the order, West Indies were his favourite opposition.

Team news

Vinay Kumar went for 102 runs in nine overs in the last ODI India played in Bangalore. Although he has made it back to the side as an injury replacement for Dhawal Kulkarni, it is hard to see him meriting a place in the XI. Ravindra Jadeja is back, after missing the Tests with a shoulder injury.India (probable) 1 Rohit Sharma, 2 Shikhar Dhawan, 3 Virat Kohli, 4 Suresh Raina, 5 Yuvraj Singh, 6 MS Dhoni (capt & wk), 7 Ravindra Jadeja, 8 R Ashwin, 9 Bhuvneshwar Kumar, 10 Jaydev Unadkat/Mohit Sharma, 11 Mohammed ShamiGayle moved down the order in Pakistan’s previous ODI series after three failures as opener. Given his record in India, West Indies might want to move him back up. Sunil Narine, who many said should have played the Tests ahead of Veerasammy Permaul, will take his regular ODI spot. Kieron Pollard is injured and that will help Sammy keep his place in the XI.West Indies (probable) 1 Chris Gayle, 2 Johnson Charles (wk), 3 Darren Bravo, 4 Marlon Samuels, 5 Narsingh Deonarine, 6 Lendl Simmons, 7 Dwayne Bravo (capt), 8 Darren Sammy, 9 Sunil Narine, 10 Ravi Rampaul, 11 Jason Holder

Pitch and conditions

Only ten overs were possible in the five-day Duleep Trophy final last month in Kochi. One of the finalists had to be decided by the toss of a coin as even two innings could not be completed over six days in the first semi-final, also played in Kochi. The Nehru Stadium, also used for football, has received a lot of flak for its refurbished drainage system. It has also taken a lot of rain. The southwest monsoon is over, but it is northeast monsoon time now in south India. Unusually for an India venue, and in anticipation of more showers, the entire ground, instead of just the square, has been kept under covers. Rain is forecast in the morning and evening of the match, but not during the afternoon.

Stats and trivia

  • Gayle averages 20.73 in ODIs in 2013, his lowest return since 1999, his debut year
  • Virat Kohli is 81 short of 5000 ODI runs. If he gets there in Kochi, he will tie with Viv Richards as the fastest to the landmark in 114 innings

Quotes

“It’s important, not only for them but also for the team, that they score runs – the No. 4 and No. 5 spots are very important. After the openers set the platform, these guys capitalise in the last 10-15 overs.”

Left-arm pacer Usman Khan’s maiden five-wicket haul in Twenty20 matches, as well as a quickfire fifty from Haris Sohail, helped Zarai Taraqiati Bank Limited thump Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited by 78 runs in Lahore and secure the Faysal Bank Department T20 Cup. Usman, who finished with match-winning figures of 5 for 9, also ended the tournament as the leading wicket-taker.Chasing a mammoth 185 in an electrifying atmosphere at the Gaddafi Stadium, SNGPL began their chase poorly, as Usman stunned them with a double strike in the opening over. Mohammad Rizwan was the first to depart after edging behind to the keeper Shakeel Ansar, and two deliveries later, Taufeeq Umar was bowled for a two-ball duck.Faysal Bank T20 Cup honours

Man of the Match – Usman Khan
Best Bowler – Usman Khan (11 wickets)
Best Batsman – Sarfraz Ahmed (250 runs)
Best Allrounder – Zohaib Ahmed (141 runs and 10 wickets)

With the pressure starting to mount on SNGPL, Usman struck again in his second over, dismissing Ali Waqas and Misbah-ul-Haq as the team slumped to 9 for 4- a point of no recovery. The pitch still looked good for runs, however, and Umar Akmal capitalized, smashing 16 runs off Mohammad Khalil in the fourth over, but his 19-run cameo ended when he carved a catch to Usman at third man.Bilalawal Bhatti, who made his Pakistan debut last month, was the only form of resistance for SNGPL. He made 38 off 20 balls with two sixes and five fours, but eventually slashed a top edge back to Ansar in the 12th over. Medium-pacer Imran Khan chipped in with three wickets, as SNGPL were bundled out for 106 in 16.1 overs.Earlier, ZTBL, put in to bat, made a flying start as Imran Nazir and Sharjeel Khan opened the inning with a blitzing 85-run stand, but they were both trapped lbw by Imran Ali in the 10th over. The team’s run rate began to fall as Yasir Hameed and Sohail took some time to settle, but once they found their feet, they anchored the innings with a 54-run third-wicket stand. Hameed was removed for 32, but Sohail added a late surge to the innings. His 32-ball 58 which included five fours and three sixes, eventually helped the team to 184 for 3.

Gul takes 11 to guide Habib Bank to win

Umar Gul’s 11-wicket haul paved the way for Habib Bank‘s innings-and-60-run win over Port Qasim Authority in Sialkot.Having chosen to bat, Port Qasim were routed for 65 in the first innings as Gul and Ehsan Adil bowled in tandem to pick up five wickets each. Gul finished with figures of 5 for 12 in 10 overs, while Adil took 5 for 48. A century from Shan Masood and a fifty from Aftab Alam helped Habib Bank reach 288, though they lost quick wickets towards the end to pacer Sohail Khan, who finished with figures of 4 for 72.Port Qasim fared marginally better in their second innings, but still fell short of clearing the 223-run deficit. Gul dismantled the top and middle order, dismissing five of the top six batsmen. Mohammad Waqas, who had retired hurt on the second evening, scored a stubborn fifty, but couldn’t stop Port Qasim from hurtling towards a defeat. The last-wicket stand between Mohammad Sami and Sohail Khan resisted, adding 34 runs before Sohail was dismissed with the score at 163.United Bank Limited won their second match with a combined bowling effort from Tariq Haroon and Atif Maqbool who helped them move above Zarai Taraqiati Bank Limited with a six-wicket win in Islamabad. Even though UBL conceded a two-run lead in the first innings, Haroon and Maqbool routed ZTBL for 136 in the second innings to put them in command.ZTBL scored 235 in the first innings with a hundred from Yasir Hameed (108) even though the middle- and lower-order didn’t score much. UBL were restricted to 233 by a nine-wicket haul from Imran Khan, his best first-class figures, as Saeed Bin Nasir top-scored with 97. Fiery spells from Haroon and Maqbool meant UBL had to chase 139, which they did with the help of Bismillah Khan (52) and Ali Asad (49*).
