Tony Hill has stepped down from the ICC elite panel of umpires to take up the role of New Zealand Cricket umpire coach

ESPNcricinfo staff09-Jan-2014Tony Hill has stepped down from the ICC elite panel of umpires to take up the role of New Zealand Cricket umpire coach. He will begin his new role in March this year.Hill, 62, ends a 15-year international umpiring career, having officiated in 40 Tests, 96 ODIs and 17 Twenty20 internationals. He was promoted to the elite panel in 2009 after serving on the international panel for 11 years.Hill came into umpiring without any background in first-class cricket and made his international debut with an ODI between New Zealand and Zimbabwe in Napier in March 1998. He stood in the World Cups in 2007 and 2011, the Champions Trophies in 2009 and 2013, and the World Twenty20s in 2007, 2009, 2010 and 2012. His final appointment was as third umpire in the fifth Ashes Test in Sydney.Hill’s new position will focus mainly around managing recruitment and retention processes for amateur umpires, talent identification of potential professional umpires and the coaching of New Zealand’s elite umpires.Hill said he would treasure his time as an umpire. “It has been so special officiating internationally among great players alongside the finest umpires in the world,” Hill said. “What a privilege! I have thoroughly enjoyed my time with the ICC and feel privileged to have been part of the system at a time when umpiring transformed to what it is today.”I would like to offer my special thanks and appreciation to my family, colleagues in the playing control team and all those who I have worked with for supporting me throughout my time with the ICC.”This wonderful opportunity as NZC umpire coach enables me to continue to be part of this marvellous match-official community and work with the aspiring umpires throughout New Zealand. What a challenge and one I look forward to.”Vince van der Bijl, the ICC umpires and referees manager, said: “Tony has given sterling service to the game over many years and his humour, commitment and selfless approach will be sorely missed. He loves cricket and officiating, so we are delighted that in his new role he will continue to serve the game and help New Zealand continue to produce top-level umpires into the future.”Many thanks Tony for playing such an important role in the period of transformation within the match-official community and for your contribution to each of us.”Rodger McHarg, the NZC national umpiring manager, said Hill’s involvement would be helpful in developing upcoming umpires in New Zealand. “Tony’s been a highly respected umpire for a number of years and we’re incredibly pleased to secure the services of someone with his knowledge and expertise,” McHarg said. “The demand for quality umpires in our game is ever increasing and we’re dedicated to providing top-level officiating at all levels of the game. We believe Tony will be instrumental in helping us to continue to raise that bar.”He’s been a great example of what can be achieved on the international stage and with his involvement we’re confident that we can continue to produce world-class umpires.”

Weakened Mumbai in fight for survival

Mumbai, the defending Ranji champions, who are missing key players, take on a confident Gujarat at a result-conducive venue, as both teams make a final bid to secure a spot in the knockouts

The Preview by Amol Karhadkar29-Dec-2013

Mumbai will miss the services of Zaheer Khan and Ajinkya Rahane in Valsad•AFP

Irrespective of whether they are playing at home or away, Mumbai usually appear the stronger and more confident unit when the two sides train on the eve of a Ranji Trophy match. Sunday was definitely an exception to the rule. While the Gujarat squad was relaxed during its training at the Sardar Vallabhai Patel Stadium in Valsad, a quaint town almost midway between the traditional home grounds of both the teams, Wasim Jaffer’s Mumbai outfit was far from a confident lot. The rhythm during the pre-match training was somehow missing. One felt that on the back of a mediocre run in the last three games, Mumbai was the side under pressure. The fragility was so obvious that Gujarat captain Parthiv Patel pronounced what every opposition captain avoids even thinking, let alone speaking, ahead of their match against the 40-time Ranji champions. “Obviously we are confident that we can defeat this Mumbai unit,” Patel said.Tremors in the Mumbai camp were understandable as they enter the game as one of the most inexperienced Mumbai units. Barring stand-in captain Jaffer, not one player has played two full seasons for the outfit. Sachin Tendulkar has retired. Zaheer Khan, Rohit Sharma and Ajinkya Rahane have been donning the national colours. Abhishek Nayar and Dhawal Kulkarni have been sidelined due to injuries. All this culminated in Mumbai, who were topping the group charts at the midway stage when Zaheer was leading from the front, being far from assured of a place in the knockout stage.Going into the last league round, Mumbai have to first attain at least a first-innings lead, and then, depending on how Punjab are faring against Jharkhand, will have to determine whether an outright victory is a must for them to progress to the quarter-finals. Gujarat, on the other hand, find themselves in a more favourable scenario. All they require is to avoid an outright loss and they will be ensured of a place in the last eight. That, however, is slightly tricky considering the pitch in Valsad has recently been result-oriented. Only one of the last five matches played at the ground has been a draw.Mumbai’s list of injuries got bigger on the eve of the match as Siddhesh Lad, who has scored three fifties in his debut season, suffered a suspected disc injury while playing football during the team’s warm-up and was ruled out. Lad’s unavailability would further unsettle the combination of the visiting side.Gujarat, on the other hand, appears to be a far more settled team than the visitors, who have tried a whopping 22 players in the season so far. The trend of results at this venue is likely to continue. If Mumbai are to avoid being on the wrong side of it, which would all but put an end to their title defence, they will have to get the better of Gujarat’s blend of youth and seasoned campaigners. While Parthiv has been at his best with the bat, Venugopal Rao and Rakesh Dhurv have also been contributing handsomely all through the season. It has resulted in the job of the home-grown youngsters being made easier, and most of them have justified the faith that has been shown in them for a better part of the past two seasons. If they continue with the good work, they will not only keep their Ranji campaign alive, but also oust the defending champions from the tournament.

Zia, Shakeel guide Pakistan to second win

ScorecardPakistan Under-19’s bowling attack restricted England Under-19 to 168, before a 96-ball 63 from Saud Shakeel helped Pakistan to a three-wicket win in Abu Dhabi.Pacers Zia-ul-Haq and Irfanullah Shah led the attack for Pakistan, who after electing to field, bundled England out in 43 overs. The opener Ryan Higgins top-scored with 80 off 84 balls, but received little support from the rest of the batsmen. Zia finished with 3 for 32, while Shah and Karamat Ali chipped in with two wickets each to run through an England batting order in which seven of their players failed to get into double digits.England made a bright start during the chase as the seamer Josh Shaw picked up three early wickets to leave Pakistan rattling at 39 for 4 in the 11th over. But Imam-ul-Haq and Shakeel led the recovery, adding 71 for the fifth wicket, before the former fell for 49 in the 31st over. Saifullah Khan was immediately dismissed in the next over, but Shakeel and Zafar Gohar contributed 53 for the seventh wicket to all but seal Pakistan’s second straight win of the tournament.

Jesse Ryder has been recalled to New Zealand colours for the first time since February 2012 as part of a 13-man squad for the one-day series against West Indies.Elsewhere in the squad, Martin Guptill has returned from injury and will partner Ryder at the top of the order, meaning that Tom Latham misses out. Tim Southee will miss the first two matches of the series to have a toe problem dealt with, but is expected to return for the third ODI in Queenstown.Ryder has not played at international level after being dropped for disciplinary issues during the one-day series against South Africa. He has since had to serve a six-month suspension for taking banned stimulants, a period which coincided with his recovery from the serious assault he suffered in Christchurch earlier this year.Bruce Edgar, the national selector, said it was a credit to his perseverance that he has responded to so many setbacks. “He’s in great form and he’s in a great space. Go back a number of months ago and it could have been the end of his career. He’s come back with a vengeance and wants to play well and play for the Blackcaps, and that’s what we want.”Since returning to domestic cricket for Otago, following a move away from Wellington, he has scored 454 runs at 64.85 in four Plunket Shield matches. There has been understandable caution about Ryder’s return to the New Zealand fold, but Ryder is now ready to put a tough period behind him.”I set the goal to make it back earlier this year and it is a great end to a tough year for me,” Ryder said. “I’m more motivated than ever to perform for the Blackcaps.”And there won’t be any extra safety nets put in place for Ryder’s return. “Jesse is in the team environment so there’s plenty of support in that environment,” Edgar said.It has also been confirmed that Luke Ronchi will have the wicketkeeping gloves throughout the series. Last week Mike Hesson, the New Zealand coach, confirmed that Brendon McCullum’s days as a wicketkeeper were over due to his back problems.Adam Milne, the 21-year-old Central Districts pace bowler, who was part of the squad in Sri Lanka has been retained despite not taking a wicket in those three matches.Squad: Brendon McCullum (capt), Corey Anderson, Martin Guptill, Mitchell McClenaghan, Nathan McCullum, Kyle Mills, Adam Milne, Colin Munro, James Neesham, Luke Ronchi, Jesse Ryder, Ross Taylor, Kane Williamson

Aggressive NZ aim to push India off top

New Zealand made it clear that they were going to go hard at India, but the visitors’ tenacity could make for an exciting contest

The Preview by Sidharth Monga21-Jan-2014Match factsWednesday, January 22, 2014
Start time 1400 local (0100 GMT)Mitchell McClenaghan is all set to become the second-fastest man to 50 ODI wickets•Getty ImagesBig PictureIn Napier, New Zealand made it clear that they were going to go hard at India. It’s a series they have waited long for, quite nervously too, given the BCCI’s reluctance to honour the FTP and accountability to none. Now that it has arrived, New Zealand are out to make full use of the shortened version of the tour.
It is shaping up to be an evenly matched series: for all their aggression with the bat and the ball, and the brilliance in the field, New Zealand will still need their best at all times to get better of India, as was evident from how Virat Kohli and MS Dhoni nearly won a lost match all on their own. There was a lot of back and forth in the first ODI with both sides showing tenacity at various points of the match. If they can keep that up for over the next 10 days, we might be in for a memorable ODI series.
After the Napier win, Brendon McCullum and Mitchell McClenaghan, the bowler who did the most damage, have both said they were glad at how the bouncers worked against India – four specialist batsmen fell pulling – and that there will be no let-up despite the absence of Adam Milne, who consistently bowled around 150kmph in his first spell. Hamilton, however, might be the closest to home for India. It has slowed down recently, has been helping spinners, has short boundaries, and should bring India good memories of comfortable wins in both the Test and the ODI on their last trip to New Zealand. There is added incentive for India to win in Hamilton. If they don’t, they will momentarily lose their No.1 ranking to Australia.Form guideNew Zealand WLWWL (last five completed matches, most recent first)
India LLLWL
In the spotlightMcClenaghan is all set to become the second-fastest man to 50 ODI wickets. He currently has 47 in 19 games; Ajantha Mendis reached 50 in 19 ODIs. It’s McClenaghan’s strike rate, though, that is stunning. He gets a wicket every 20.4 balls. The next-best strike rate for anyone who has taken a minimum of 47 wickets is 27.1. It’s McClenaghan’s ability to take wickets, never mind the runs he might concede, that New Zealand will look forward to.
Interestingly, and some might be stunned by this, among Indian bowlers who have taken a minimum of 50 wickets, the best strike rate belongs to Ishant Sharma. His economy rate of 5.7 is similar to McClenaghan’s 5.8, but Ishant doesn’t compensate enough with a strike rate of 32.9, which happens to be India’s best, though. As usual, Ishant, the trooper that he is, will keep fighting with the heat on him. Despite bowling that superb last over, Ishant was the worst bowler in the first ODI, going at eight an over. It won’t be long before India look past the spirit of Ishant. He needs a big performance some time soon.Teams newsNew Zealand have been hit by the injury to Milne, and they are almost certain to bring in Kyle Mills.
New Zealand: 1 Martin Guptill, 2 Jesse Ryder, 3 Kane Williamson, 4 Ross Taylor, 5 Brendon McCullum (capt.), 6 Corey Anderson, 7 Luke Ronchi (wk), 8 Nathan McCullum, 9. Kyle Mills, 10 Tim Southee, 11 Mitchell McClenaghanIndia don’t discuss their XI before a match, but there are two places that will be debated: Suresh Raina’s and Ishant’s. The recent slowness of Seddon Park should give the two spinners another go. Unless India make an extremely bold move of playing Stuart Binny ahead of a specialist batsman or bowler, it is unlikely he is getting his debut here.India (possible) 1 Rohit Sharma, 2 Shikhar Dhawan, 3 Virat Kohli, 4 Suresh Raina/Ambati Rayudu, 5 MS Dhoni (capt & wk), 6 Ajinkya Rahane, 7 Ravindra Jadeja, 8 R Ashwin, 9 Ishant Sharma, 10 Mohammed Shami, 11 Bhuvneshwar KumarPitch and conditionsThe groundsman Karl Johnson is not sure why it is happening, but Seddon Park is observing a recent trend of slowness and assistance for spinners. However, it has rained heavily on the two days leading into the match so there could be something in there for the quicks too. It is going to be interesting to observe the pitch’s behaviour, especially if it is overcast on match day too.Stats and trivia R Ashwin has taken only one wicket in his last 80 overs in international cricket. The Napier win was New Zealand’s first in the last seven attempts against India. New Zealand have won only one of their last five ODIs at Seddon Park. Quotes”One thing I learnt in South Africa was when you are batting, whatever you are doing, you need to commit to it fully. Because people are bowling at you at 140-145 kph, there is not much time to decide and think later on, after the ball is bowled. Whatever you want to do, you got to read the length and commit to the shot. If you want to leave the ball, you have got to commit to that.”

“We’re not going to be nice to them, we’re going to get in their face and let them know that we’re here and we’re going to put our mark on the build-up to the World Cup.”
