Sibanda shreds Zimbabwe nerves

Zimbabwe thought they’d sealed the deal. The scores were tied and there were three deliveries remaining. Surely it could not go wrong from there? Vusi Sibanda ensured it didn’t. Eventually.

Vusi Sibanda got Zimbabwe out of jail•ICC

Zimbabwe thought they’d sealed the deal, albeit fortuitously, when Sean Williams’ inside edge skooted past Wesley Baressi for four. The scores were tied and there were three deliveries remaining. Surely it could not go wrong from there?Williams missed the next ball but the scores were still tired and there were two deliveries remaining. Surely it could not go wrong from there? Then Williams ran himself out trying to scramble a single to ensure it did not go wrong. The scores were tied and there was only one delivery remaining. It could easily go wrong from there.Vusi Sibanda was under intense scrutiny. He was batting well outside of his regular opening berth, having being pushed all the way down to No. 6 because of the strategy on the day. He also didn’t inspire much confidence. He only averages 15.28 in the format, an indictment for a batsman of his quality. Two of his last five T20 scores were in single fingers and when he did get going, he failed to push on. In the last match, he succumbed to the pull shot – the stroke that he tends to go back to when he feels cornered and that is often responsible for his undoing.Against that backdrop, he had to face more pressure than has befallen him. It was not the pressure of building an innings but the pressure of ending one. At least someone one backed him to stand up to it.”Vusi has been playing international cricket for 10 years; he is a very talented player,” Brendan Taylor, Zimbabwe captain, said. “Obviously it was not a familiar position that he is used to and something new to him. But we always had faith in him and when the field’s up, it does make it a little bit easier.”All Netherlands fielders were saving the single so Sibanda’s only choice was to go over them. He sent Ahsan Malik’s last ball further into the stands than anyone else had managed to in the match to remove Zimbabwean worries and keep them alive in the competition.Sibanda gave fighting spirit a new image, one Taylor feels it could have done without, given what it did to his nerves. “We needed that win but we made it very difficult for ourselves,” he said. “We shouldn’t have finished in the last over.”Taylor felt the same about Zimbabwe’s first match against Ireland. That was decided on the last ball as well and then, Taylor blamed his batsmen for not posting a sizeable enough score to defend. Then, a total of 180 on this pitch looked par, this time Taylor thought it had much less in it and felt responsibility lay with his fielders for not restricting Netherlands even further. “We leaked 15 or 20 runs and we should have restricted them to 120,” he said. “We were really sloppy and we made it a lot more difficult than it should have been.”Although Zimbabwe did not drop any catches, they were lazy in protecting the boundary and on three occasions, lost the ball as it approached the rope. They were also beaten too often in the infield and sometimes, more times than Taylor was happy with, failed to pick up the ball cleanly when chasing. Taylor identified that as one of the areas they need to improve on before their last qualifier on Friday.Despite letting Netherlands get away a bit, Zimbabwe never felt the chase was out of their grasp, even when the run-rate ballooned over nine. “We felt we needed wickets in hand,” Taylor said. “Chasing 140 with a quick outfield on a pretty decent wicket to bat on, if you have got wickets in hand, you can always chase 10, 12 or even13 runs an over at the end.” And if you are Sibanda you can even get six off the final ball.

Malinga five-for cuts Pakistan short

Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsLasith Malinga reasserted his skill for rattling chases in a tight finish, after Lahiru Thirimanne had proclaimed his relevance to the ODI format, as Sri Lanka sputtered to a thrilling win in the Asia Cup opener in Fatullah.Pakistan lost their top order cheaply, surged, collapsed, then surged briefly again, in search of 297, but the total that had been set up by Thirimanne’s 102 was 12 too many, despite half-centuries from Misbah-ul-Haq and Umar Akmal.Malinga’s 5 for 52 was his first in ODIs since January 2012, as he claimed the two last Pakistan scalps in an unflappable 49th over replete with tailing yorkers. Bilawal Bhatti and Saeed Ajmal had managed 17 runs from the previous over to whittle the requirement down to 17 from two overs, but Ajmal was caught in front by a yorker, and Bhatti had one clatter into his off stump. Bhatti’s wicket was Malinga’s 250th, and he achieved the milestone faster than any other Sri Lanka bowler, beating Muttiah Muralitharan by 11 matches.Pakistan had earlier seemed in control, with 55 needed off 46 balls and six wickets in hand, thanks to the 121-run stand between Misbah and Akmal. But Malinga was vital to quelling that charge too. He struck twice in four balls in the 45th over, to swing the match strongly in Sri Lanka’s favour, before dismissing Umar Gul in his next. All of his wickets came in his last 15 balls.Lasith Malinga’s five wickets came in his last 15 balls•AFP

During Sri Lanka’s innings, Thirimanne’s 161-run stand, off 146 balls, with Kumar Sangakkara had been the centrepiece. The pair pushed the run rate close to six, promising a total well in excess of 300, but a stutter in the batting Powerplay and a focused Pakistan, led by Saeed Ajmal, in the late overs ensured they did not finish with force.Thirimanne, backed by the selectors to open instead of Mahela Jayawardene, was fluent from the outset, and despite his strike rate of 92.72, was rarely ruled by aggression. A crisp cover drive off Gul brought him his first boundary in the second over, and that stroke – his favourite – proved equally productive against spin. Casually authoritative on the off side to begin with, Thirimanne eventually added a leg side element to his play, even swinging Mohammad Hafeez over deep midwicket for six, in the 31st over.In between the sweetly struck fours, Thirimanne was also adept at measuring singles. Aided by a surface that offered little seam movement or turn, and by Sangakkara’s enterprise at the other end, he eased to his half-century in the 20th over, then launched an offensive after the 25th.For a batsman who has spent much of the past two months sidelined with injury, Thirimanne was as stoic as he was confident. The nineties drew no fidgets or hair-brained strokes. He flitted through them, as he had done throughout his stay, to record his second triple-figure score in ODIs. The milestone, fittingly, came from a cover drive. The celebration, typically, was understated.Though Thirimanne had modeled his strokes and approach on his senior partner, Sangakkara had not been quite so mellow. Often he strode forward against the quicks to make length deliveries overpitched, and his initiative became Sri Lanka’s impetus. He hit 67 from 65 balls, before thumping an Umar Gul bouncer to the only infielder on the leg side.Angelo Mathews embellished his regained stature as a finisher with an unbeaten 55 off 50 balls, but with no secure ally at the other end, he could not attack freely at the close. Ajmal’s varied final spell was Sri Lanka’s biggest hindrance. He finished with 1 for 50 from his full quota, while Umar Gul, who strangely only bowled eight overs, took 2 for 38.Pakistan had fizzled to 121 for 4 in response, before a measured Misbah and an impetuous Akmal fanned the embers of the chase, only to let it grow cold when triumph was in sight. There was little to separate this Misbah half-century from the dozens he has scored in the past 14 months. A staccato of curt defensive prods and opportunistic nurdles broken by startling, occasional blasts: a whack over long-on off Thisara Perera and a slog over midwicket off Sachithra Senanayake cleared the ropes with ease. His innings could have ended at 44 when he gave a feather-edge off Suranga Lakmal, but as the only giveaway to Misbah’s indiscretion was one muffled, woody note, the umpire was unmoved.Akmal’s progress was smoother, until he unleashed towards the end. He carted Suranga Lakmal for 16 in the 41st over and slammed two fours off debutant left-arm spinner Chaturanga de Silva in the next. Angelo Mathews bravely kept Lakmal on and the bowler was rewarded with an edge to the keeper that sparked Pakistan’s late stumble. When Misbah leathered Malinga to deep square leg, it appeared Pakistan were all but done.Lakmal had delivered four overs of accurate away-seam with the new ball, claiming Sharjeel Khan’s wicket, but though he dismissed Akmal, his figures in the final overs suggested he has not yet developed a head for death bowling. Senanayake and de Silva took one wicket apiece, and Mathews himself took the key scalp of Mohammad Hafeez, who had been Sri Lanka’s primary tormentor during the bilateral series in December.

India, Sri Lanka look to renew relationship

Match facts

Big picture

India and Sri Lanka have been guilty of indulging each other in the past, they are the most frequently paired-up opponents in ODI cricket, but this one promises to be different. For starters it has been seven months since they played against each other. More importantly they are playing in a tournament whose every match is crucial by the way of a difficult qualification for the final. Only two teams out of five progress, and there is no way any game can be taken lightly. These two are young, fresh-looking teams. So gone out should be the contemptuous familiarity that used to fill up the air around an India-Sri Lanka contest. For the first time in a long time, each team has established players whose main body of work hasn’t come against the other. Shikhar Dhawan has played only four matches against Sri Lanka. Dinesh Chandimal has played 14 out of 78 against India. There are new players coming through such as Chaturanga de Silva and Ambati Rayudu. In the likes, however, of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, and Kumar Sangakkara and Lasith Malinga, this is a mere renewal of vows. In a new setting, under new captains, just to add a little spice to the relationship.A familiar script should run through this coming back: both the teams will be eager to chase. India love chasing, and dew is never too far in the evenings. Sri Lanka, who won their first match batting first against Pakistan, know India are different. They will want Indian bowlers, their weaker suit, to be in the middle when the key parts of the match are being played out.

In the spotlight

News that R Ashwin has made significant changes to his action is hardly news at all. People can read through such sentences without pausing to even think because Ashwin keeps playing around with it so often; it could be a sign of either excessive confidence in his basic skill or excessive fidgetiness, but it fails to make people wait with bated breath to see what is in store. In India’s first match of this Asia Cup, though, Ashwin stunned even the most jaded of Aswhin observers. For arguably the first time in his career, he was photographed wearing full sleeves on a cricket field. And he hadn’t just made significant changes to his action, he had got himself a completely new one. Wonder what is coming next.
One man who doesn’t need to change or fiddle with things is Lasith Malinga, who took five wickets in 14 balls to derail what looked like a routine chase. That, though, was Pakistan, who are known to make routine difficult. Against India his career average of 27 inflates to 42, and economy rate jumps from 5.15 to 5.95. The last time he played India he went for a comfortable 58 runs in a match that required a last over for 202 to be chased down. His Hobart harassment is still the most stunning of all. Malinga will want to correct this poor record against India.

Pitch and conditions

These are fairly good batting conditions and a lightning quick outfield so a huge total can’t be too far away.

Stats and trivia

  • R Ashwin needs two strikes to reach 100 ODI wickets. If he does this in this match, his 77th, he will be the seventh-fastest Indian there. Irfan Pathan, at 59 matches, is the fastest Indian to the mark. Harbhajan Singh, the sixth-fastest, took his 100th in his 76th match.
  • This is the 144th ODI between India and Sri Lanka. No two teams have played each other this often. Pakistan-Sri Lanka is second at 138, and Australia-West Indies third at 135.

Quotes

“We always bank on him in pressure situations. He’s been our best bowler for so many years, and we always throw the ball to him, and he knows exactly what he has to do.”

“Joey [Dawes, the bowling coach] is really working hard with the bowlers in the nets, and that is really crucial. On this wicket, I think the bowlers did really well. Bhuvi and Shami later on bowled wicket to wicket, and it was not easy to hit that length.” “

Top order can afford to settle in – Mushfiqur

Bangladesh captain Mushfiqur Rahim is willing to allow the top order batsmen to take their time in the middle in T20s, as long as they push harder after getting set

Mominul Haque has a chance to break into the top order•AFP

Bangladesh captain Mushfiqur Rahim is willing to allow the top order batsmen to take their time in the middle in T20s, as long as they push harder after getting set. Mushfiqur had factored in the slow pitches in Bangladesh which do not always allow batsmen to go for their shots early.”The top three batsmen usually set up the game in T20s,” Mushfiqur said ahead of Bangladesh’s opening qualifier against Afghanistan in Mirpur. “The No.4 also has to join in. I think these batsmen have a lot of responsibilities. The wicket wasn’t easy in the practice game against Ireland, making us to start slowly. We targeted 140-150, though Shakib [Al Hasan] and I took it further. If the openers give us a good start, the pressure lessens on the middle order. We would hope for such a start tomorrow, and then from the middle, we will finish it well.”It was difficult to play shots from the word go in Fatullah, as the wicket was slow. We are willing to give batsmen time in the middle as long as they recover the scoring rate after getting set. The middle and lower order can do that recovery work but the top order can also do it after making a slow start.”Either of Anamul Haque and Shamsur Rahman will be vying to open with Tamim Iqbal, with the former ahead due to a recent ODI century against Pakistan and a half-century against India. However, Shamsur has opened for Bangladesh in their last six T20s.Shakib and Mushfiqur usually bat at three and four, but there has been talk of slotting in either Mominul Haque or Sabbir Rahman in the top order too. “If either of Sabbir and Mominul plays, we will try to accommodate them in the top order,” Mushfiqur said.”We have enough batsmen and allrounders so we will take a decision on the team after taking a final look at the wicket. The decision will also depend on what balances our team, and in addition, we have a flexible batting line-up so we will be sending batsmen according to the situation.”Putting Shakib and Mushfiqur just after the openers has worked for Bangladesh, but if there has to be a choice between Mominul and Sabbir, it should be the latter. Sabbir has played just one T20 international, against Sri Lanka in Chittagong, but has been successful in domestic cricket in the last 12 months. He also played a match-winning innings for the Bangladesh side against Afghanistan in the 2010 Asian Games gold medal match, and has played similar sort of innings throughout his career. Although Mominul’s overall strike-rate is higher than most in the Bangladesh team, he has only played four T20s.Bangladesh’s line-up will become slightly more streamlined as Mushfiqur returns as wicketkeeper, having recovered from a finger injury. He kept against Ireland, and says that he missed captaining from behind the stumps.”I was feeling great yesterday (in Fatullah against Ireland). I can manage the pain that I am playing with. I can see the team very well from my favoured position. I hope to keep tomorrow as well,” he said.Mushfiqur firmly believes that Bangladesh has earned the amount of expectation that lies on their shoulders. They could be thrown out of the tournament if they lose to Afghanistan but he will take inspiration from home conditions and support.”I don’t think there is a lot of pressure on us. There is always going to be pressure at the international level. The Bangladesh team has earned this expectation and pressure for playing well in the last two years.”We hope to perform up to expectations. Along with pressure, we have the home ground and support. I hope that with all these advantages, we can start off with a win,” Mushfiqur said.

Thomas, Walton tons thump Guyana

A round-up of the Regional four-day matches that ended on March 24, 2014

ESPNcricinfo staff24-Mar-2014Combined Campuses and Colleges rode on centuries from Shacaya Thomas and Chadwick Walton to roll Guyana over by seven wickets and record their first win of the season. Their efforts were crucial to securing a first-innings lead before spinners Ryan Austin and Akeem Dewar reinforced CCC’s dominance.Guyana’s batting this season has featured a father-son duo in Shivnarine and Tagenarine Chanderpaul but the sheen of the event was taken off slightly when both of them fell for single-figures. Opener Assad Fudadin (71) gave structure to the innings with a composed half-century. But he was left lacking for support, until No.8 Anthony Bramble hastened to a 68-ball 64. He spearheaded a ninth-wicket stand of 40 at better than run-a-ball to hike the total to 263. Austin was the best bowler with 5 for 71.Guyana would have counted on the momentum of that late surge to muzzle their opposition but Thomas plundered 176, with 14 fours and 4 sixes while Walton struck 107 off 193 balls to usher CCC to 391 before they declared. Spin held sway again with Veerasammy Permaul and Devendra Bishoo taking six of the nine wickets to fall. The most drastic impact of the slow bowlers was reserved for the third innings when Austin (4-22 in 26.5 overs) and Dewar (4-61) ran through Guyana. Tagenarine top-scored with 43, but his efforts were only good enough to post a highly gettable target of 46, albeit CCC lost three wickets in overhauling it.Four-wicket hauls by Sulieman Benn and Ashley Nurse helped Barbados to an innings win over Trinidad and Tobago at Kensington Oval with a day to spare. Nurse followed up his first-innings century with six wickets in the match, while Benn finished with a match haul of eight.Barbados opted to bat first and got off to a bad start, losing their captain Kraigg Brathwaite for a duck. Steady contributions by the middle order helped Barbados take control, thanks to Omar Phillips’ fifty and forties by Kirk Edwards and Jonathan Carter. The wicketkeeper Shane Dowrich and Carlos Brathwaite added a quick 82 for the sixth wicket before Dowrich fell for 53. Brathwaite and Nurse then added an unbeaten 190 for the eighth wicket, with Brathwaite scoring 109. Nurse blazed an unbeaten 130 off just 111 balls before the declaration at 479 for 8.Carlos Brathwaite struck early with his seamers and it paved the way for Benn to strike with his left-arm spin. Only Jason Mohammed resisted with 43 as the T&T collapsed to 120 in 37 overs. Benn was brought on to bowl immediately after T&T were asked to follow on. The openers Adrian Barath and Evin Lewis added 68 before Benn struck, removing Lewis for 61. Darren Bravo then cut Jason Holder to backward point before Barath was caught behind off Benn. When Mohammed was caught at leg slip off Nurse, T&T had lost three wickets for just ten runs.T&T went into lunch at 138 for 4, but lost wickets in a hurry and were bowled out for 199.

Arthur está bem, conversei com ele, disse que foi só uma pancada. Sem passar por cima do doutor (Rodrigo Lasmar), depois vai dar sua avaliação, mas só pelo aspecto dele, ele está bem.

Passo a passo:

É a vez dele.
