Kamran Akmal and Shoaib Malik have been omitted from a pool of 36 probables who will take part in a month-long summer camp at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore starting on May 6. Pakistan’s new selection committee recalled Taufeeq Umar and Yasir Hameed for the camp and the focus is on preparing for upcoming tours and the 2015 World Cup.The camp will be supervised by the coaching staff of the National Cricket Academy, headed by Mohammad Akram, as the PCB is currently hunting for national coaches. Fast bowler Junaid Khan and offspinner Saeed Ajmal will not attend the camp due to their county commitments in England.Pakistan are set to play seven Tests, 13 ODIs and two T20s in the next 10 months. However, with the next international series three months away, the PCB was concerned about the long layoff. The gap was originally seven months, before the PCB managed to strike a deal for a short tour of Sri Lanka in August. Pakistan will then host Australia and New Zealand from October to December in the UAE.”We will have 36 players for the first phase of the training camp,” chief selector Moin Khan said at the National Stadium in Karachi. “The World Cup (2015) is the ultimate goal as we have to prepare for that on a day to day basis. We are planning for the whole year so we need players who can survive with their fitness, as it has been a concern. We have to keep a zero tolerance on fitness.”The notable omissions of wicketkeeper Kamran and allrounder Malik were not surprising, after their dismissal performances in the recent World T20 in Bangladesh. Both were selected for the tournament despite being in ordinary form. Kamran managed only 48 runs in four outings while Malik scored only 52 runs in four innings and wasn’t used as a bowler. Moin, however, said it wasn’t the end of the road for both players.”The recent performances by Shoaib and Kamran were not satisfactory but the doors aren’t shut on them. Given the age factor (as both are 32) we have older players who are fit and performing so there is always a chance for a comeback. They are still in contention and with the upcoming (domestic) season they have to perform well to win back the selectors’ faith.”Taufeeq, 32, had been out of contention since pulling out of the South Africa tour last year due to a leg injury. Among the current lot of Pakistan openers, he has the highest average (38.72) after Saeed Anwar (47.10) and has scored more runs than any other opener since 2001. Hameed, 36, made his debut in 2003 and was a regular member of the team for the next four years. He was dropped, then recalled for the tour of England in 2010 before being ignored again.Openers: Ahmed Shehzad, Nasir Jamshed, Shan Masood, Imran Farhat, Yasir Hameed, Khurram Manzoor, Taufeeq Umar, Sharjeel KhanMiddle order: Misbah-ul-Haq, Asad Shafiq, Younis Khan, Umar Akmal, Azhar Ali, Faisal Iqbal, Sohaib Maqsood, Haris Sohail, Fawad AlamAllrounders: Shahid Afridi, Mohammad Hafeez, Anwar Ali, Bilawal BhattiSpinners: Abdur Rehman, Zulfiqar Babar, Raza Hasan, Atif Maqbool, Yasir ShahFast bowlers: Umar Gul, Mohammad Talha, Ehsan Adil, Mohammad Irfan, Wahab Riaz, Rahat Ali, Sohail Tanvir, Mohammad SamiWicketkeepers: Adnan Akmal, Sarfaraz Ahmed

2013 finish

Runners-up, having lost the final to Mumbai Indians. That was their fifth IPL final in six editions. They have won the title twice – in 2010 and 2011.

Big Picture

Chennai Super Kings have been the most consistent of the IPL teams, both in terms of performance and team selection. So, to their fans, it will be strange to see a Super Kings outfit take the field this season minus Michael Hussey (with the team since 2008), Albie Morkel (ditto), S Badrinath (ditto) and M Vijay (with them since 2009). That they would lose some of their regulars was inevitable, given the big reshuffle this year, but that also means the team is without its established opening pair. As usual, though, they have solid options to fill those slots in new-comers Dwayne Smith and Brendon McCullum, and Faf du Plessis (on whom they used their one right-to-match card at the auction). The five players who were retained – MS Dhoni, Suresh Raina, R Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja and Dwayne Bravo – will continue to form the backbone of the eleven. Among the domestic batsmen, they have the promising talent of B Aparajith and the experience of Mithun Manhas. They have strengthened – and varied – their spin options by bringing in Samuel Badree.Fast bowling has traditionally been their weakness, and will continue to be their most fragile front. They have bought back Ben Hilfenhaus and brought in his countryman John Hastings. They might have a surprise package in young tearaway Matt Henry, who claimed the third-best debut figures for a New Zealand bowler in ODIs, against India in January. Their Indian options include seamers Mohit Sharma (whose performances last season catapulted him to the national team), the experienced Ashish Nehra and Ishwar Pandey, who has been on the fringes of the Indian team ever since topping the Ranji wickets charts in 2012-13.Chennai Super Kings will have to forge a new opening partnership this year•AFP

Off the field, things have been less smooth for Super Kings. Conflict of interest was a sword hanging over the franchise from its inception, it being owned by India Cements – the company of which BCCI president N Srinivasan is vice-chairman and managing director. That sword threatened to fatally slice through the franchise when team official and Srinivasan’s son-in-law Gurunath Meiyappan was arrested on charges of cheating, forgery and fraud a couple of days before the 2013 final, amid the spot-fixing crisis. The threat did not abate as the Supreme Court of India mulled suspending the franchise. The court decided against it. Given a lifeline, the team will be eager to replace the nightmare of the past year with some better memories.

Big players

Super Kings are a team never lacking in high-profile performers, but read through the list of them and it hard go past the pair of MS Dhoni and Suresh Raina. Raina is one short of 100 IPL matches – we are beginning season seven and he is yet to miss a single game – and is the tournament’s leading run-getter with 2802 runs. Despite often batting lower down the order, Dhoni is also one of only 11 players past the 2000-run mark, with 2243 from 96 games. Among those with 2000+ runs, Raina and Dhoni’s averages (35 and 38 respectively) are only bettered by Chris Gayle, and their strike rates (141) are behind only Gayle and Virender Sehwag. Longevity, reliability and explosiveness, all rolled into one.

Bargain buy

If the IPL auction was held after the World T20, West Indies legspinner Samuel Badree would have been one of the most sought after players. Instead, Super Kings picked him up for a mere Rs 30 lakh (US$50,000). Their think-tank must have been patting themselves on the back then, as Badree repeatedly opened the bowling and had the better of oppositions’ top orders in his team’s run to the World T20 semi-final. With 11 wickets at 10.27, he finished the joint-third highest wicket-taker (with Ashwin) and, having conceded 5.65 to the over, had the third-best economy rate (Ashwin being one of the two more miserly than him, with a 20-over cutoff).

Availability

Super Kings have no availability issues.

Quote

“We are professionals and will not allow any pressure to affect our performance. The first five games can be extremely important in the IPL, to build up a winning momentum, and that’s what we will focus on.”

Tavare and Gidman secure draw

Unbeaten centuries from Alex Gidman and William Tavare guided Gloucestershire to a draw with Essex in Bristol

Press Association30-Apr-2014
ScorecardWill Tavaré continued his impressive early-season form•Getty ImagesUnbeaten centuries from Alex Gidman and Will Tavare guided Gloucestershire to a draw with Essex in Bristol. The visitors took control of the Division Two clash on Tuesday after two days blighted by bad weather. Essex reached 305 for 8, with Ben Foakes unbeaten on 132, and their first act on the final morning was to declare. That left Gloucestershire, who made just 134 in their first innings, 171 adrift and facing a testing day in order to secure a draw. And it looked like defeat could well be on the cards when both openers went early but Gidman and Tavare guided them to 251 for 2 and a draw was agreed upon.Gloucestershire lost their first wicket in the third over when Chris Dent, who was last man out in the first innings, edged behind, giving David Masters his seventh wicket of the match.Captain Michael Klinger then fell for 7, bowled by Tymal Mills to leave the hosts wobbling at 18 for 2.But there was nothing Essex could do to part Tavare and Gidman, who batted together for more than 70 overs, putting on 233 runs. It was the second 200-plus partnership of the match, with Foakes and James Foster putting Essex in control with 218 on the third day.For 24-year-old Tavare, who was on exactly 100 when a draw was declared, it was a second century in three matches this season. Gidman scored at a faster rate to reach 119, his 21st first-class century.Essex collected 11 points from the match with Gloucestershire picking up seven. Both sides have drawn two of their three matches so far this season, with Essex beating Derbyshire in their opener and Gloucestershire losing to Hampshire.

Stephen Cook keen on Lions turnaround

Stephen Cook has been appointed first-class and 50-overs captain. Neil McKenzie will lead the 20-over side while Temba Bavuma will serve as vice-captain across formats

Firdose Moonda09-Jun-2014A new-look Lions leadership pack, headed by Stephen Cook, will take the franchise into the 2014/15 season. Cook has been appointed first-class and 50-overs captain while Neil McKenzie will lead their 20-over side. Batsman Temba Bavuma will act as deputy in all three formats. Alviro Petersen, who stepped down as captain last season, remains part of Lions’ squad but has not been tasked with any leadership duties.”I am greatly honoured to have been given this job. I grew up on the banks of the Wanderers watching my dad play and leadership is something I’ve always wanted to be involved in,” Cook told ESPNcricinfo. “I know its going to be a tough challenge but I am really looking forward to it.”After finishing second in the first-class competition and winning the twenty-over trophy in the 2012/13 season, Lions were rudely brought back down to earth last summer. They finished bottom of the points table in all three competitions in a season that was plagued by injuries and unhappiness. While seamer Chris Morris battled an ankle injury, Petersen stood down on the morning of a match after what he called interference by the selectors, forcing Thami Tsolekile to take over at the 11th hour. That marked the lowest point in the Lions’ dismal season and Cook is keen to move on. “Our players did not become bad overnight. I think what happened is because we had done so well the season before, we didn’t adapt to the fact that other teams had improved and we were caught on the hop,” he said. “But we have resisted the urge to make too many changes.”Lions have held on to their players from last summer and have made two additions to their group. Devon Conway, who was named the provincial one-day cricketer of the year at CSA’s awards last week, has been added to the contracted list along with under-19 World Cup winner Kagiso Rabada, who made his first-class debut at the end of last season. They have three nationally-contracted players on their books: Petersen, Quinton de Kock and Lonwabo Tsotsobe and an experienced core which includes Cook, McKenzie and Tsolekile. McKenzie will turn 39 in the coming season but has committed himself to playing in all formats for Lions.Cook has made it clear everyone, including the new faces, will have more demanded of them this season. “We are all really motivated to do well and guys know they will get will get pressed a little harder and asked to work a little smarter,” he said. For Cook, the goal is simple. He wants the franchise to be able to add to the trophy cupboard and if he has it his way, it will be in the longest format. “Every competition is important but for me, it would be most special to win the first-class [competition] because that is the one that really tests you as a squad,” he said. “You have to play good cricket for 40 days, whereas with the limited-overs [game] you could end up third and have a good day and then make the final. The first-class is also the competition I have never won with Lions. The last time they won it here was the season before I made my professional debut.”That was 15 years ago in the 1999/2000 season, before the franchise system had formed. Back then, all Cook wanted to do was play for what was then Gauteng and eventually for South Africa. A decade and a half later, it is still all he wants. “I have never given up on playing for South Africa. That’s my driving force.”Cook is a regular among the top ten run-scorers in the first-class competition but has struggled for higher honours largely because of where he bats – in the top two. The presence of Graeme Smith in the Test team made it difficult for Cook to get a look-in but with Smith retired, a vacancy in the national team and a platform from which to audition for it, Cook still believes anything is possible, for both him and his Lions.

Sunrisers spice up fight for fourth

Sunrisers Hyderabad appeared to be coasting towards their target of 161 after a strong opening stand, but managed to drag it to the last over to win by seven wickets and upset Royal Challengers Bangalore’s plans of making the playoffs

Prasad: Bangalore need to play fearless cricket

Sunrisers Hyderabad appeared to be coasting towards their target of 161 after a strong opening stand, but managed to drag the chase into the last over to win by seven wickets and upset Royal Challengers Bangalore’s plans of making the playoffs. Sunrisers needed 20 off the last two overs but Darren Sammy’s salvo took them through with two balls to spare. Despite the victory, Sunrisers still need other results to go their way, as do Royal Challengers – both have ten points with two remaining games.A predominantly one-sided chase turned competitive at the start of the 17th over, when Sunrisers needed 35 off 24 with nine wickets in hand. David Warner, set on 59, carved a high full toss from Varun Aaron straight to cover and his exit increased the required rate as Yuvraj Singh bowled a tight 18th over, giving away just seven runs. It came down to 17 off ten and a boundary was needed. Naman Ojha then sent the ball soaring over the second tier at deep cover and Aaron had his revenge when Ojha tamely scooped the next ball to cover.Darren Sammy didn’t need any sighters as he bashed his first ball flat over the straight boundary, bringing the equation down to less than a run a ball. He sealed the win by chipping a slower ball from Mitchell Starc over cover, giving Sunrisers a foot in the door as the scramble for fourth place got tighter.Just as pleasing for Sunrisers was the fact that Shikhar Dhawan, who was relieved of the captaincy for the sake of his batting form, scored his first fifty. Sunrisers were dominant in the Powerplay, scoring 51. Dhawan scored boundaries off more conventional strokes while Warner wasn’t afraid to play the reverse sweep against Muttiah Muralitharan. Royal Challengers used five bowlers inside the first ten overs but they had to wait till the 13th over for their first breakthrough. It came via a run-out, as Warner pushed the ball to backward point and set off but Dhawan wasn’t quick enough to beat Yuvraj’s throw. The spinners did well in parts to keep the runs down, but when Warner struck Yuzvendra Chahal for consecutive sixes, the pressure was released. Royal Challengers did well to stay in the game after Warner departed, but 160 was only competitive, but insufficient.Royal Challengers began sluggishly, scoring just two boundaries in the Powerplay. Sunrisers, in contrast, scored nine. Chris Gayle limped his way to 14 before falling cheaply and Yuvraj fell for a chancy 25-ball 21.Royal Challengers managed only 48 off the first ten overs, but in the second half the innings picked up. Kohli took 19 off a Karn Sharma over with big hits down the ground and in two overs, they had scored 31. Sammy leaked 19 off his only over as Kohli and AB de Villiers helped themselves to a six each.Kohli, who hadn’t scored a fifty in the competition, finally got the monkey off his back. He lofted Irfan Pathan over long-on but was caught the following ball in attempting to clear long-off. He wasn’t smiling in the end though, as Royal Challengers were left expecting favours from other sides to go through to the last four.
