Gonzalez, Vargas & the top 10 teenage future Mexico national team stars

As part of the NxGn series, Goal takes a look at the most promising young players who could represent El Tri

  • Pedro Pardo

    Brian Figueroa – Pumas

Brian Figueroa has been with Pumas since he was 12 years old, which isn't all that long ago for the 18-year-old. The winger hasn't seen as many minutes under current manager (and fellow Pumas youth system graduate) David Patino than he did last tournament with Paco Palencia, but still has a bright future.

  • Giuseppe Cacace

Roberto de la Rosa – Pachuca

De La Rosa burst onto the scene with a goal against Al Jazira in the Club World Cup. The shifty forward also scored twice for Mexico at the U-17 World Cup. At a club known for giving an opportunity to young players, De La Rosa should be able to keep rising.

  • Santos Laguna

Ronaldo Zinedin Hernandez – Santos Laguna

His mother wanted to name him after the France legend, while his father preferred using the Brazil forward as a namesake. They went with both. So far, the 15-year-old is living up to the names. A Torreon native, he's playing with Mexico's U-17s and scored a hat trick in a February friendly.

  • Erick Sanchez – Pachuca

Sanchez made his first-team debut back in 2016 but is really breaking out in the Clausura. The midfielder has started five matches this tournament. It's been a rough tournament for Tuzos, but young players like Sanchez continuing to emerge gives hope for the future.

Man City 2017-18 player ratings: De Bruyne, Aguero, Sane & every squad member ranked

Goal's Manchester City correspondent Sam Lee rates each player's contribution to a fine season, that has seen Pep Guardiola's men win a double

  • Getty Images

    Ederson – 9

Ederson, then 23, was tasked with succeeding where an experienced international like Claudio Bravo failed, and came for a hefty fee for a goalkeeper too. The pressure was on the Brazilian from the outset but he has been a revelation in goal, displaying wonderful distribution and a calmness under pressure that has been key to City's entire game plan.

  • Getty Images

    Claudio Bravo – 6

Claudio Bravo has had to make do with games in the domestic cups this season, and one Champions League dead rubber, such was his disappointing first campaign in England and the performances of Ederson. The Chilean did play a big role in City's Carabao Cup win and looked more dependable than he did last season, but there have still been shaky moments and not much to suggest City could cope with a long-term injury to Ederson in the future.

  • Getty

    Kyle Walker – 8

Kyle Walker was another player with question marks around him when he signed for a fee upwards of £50m last summer. His delivery was questioned and Mauricio Pochettino insisted that his best days had been spent at Tottenham. Yet Walker confounded those critics and has had a fine season at City. The England man has taken his game to a new level and he looks set to be an important member of the squad in years to come.

    Danilo – 7

A difficult season to categorise. City were insistent that the Brazilian was signed, in part, because he can provide cover at left-back, but he hardly ever looked comfortable there and even with Benjamin Mendy and Fabian Delph injured he only filled in for a handful of games. That said, his best game in the position probably came in the Carabao Cup final. At right-back he has had ups and downs. Usually solid, and no major howlers, but not as good as Walker.

Man City's Barcelona getaway: Pep, Phillips and Alvarez set to benefit from team bonding trip

Pep Guardiola takes his side back to his former club for a charity fund-raiser in aid of former team-mate Juan Carlos Unzue

Any friendlies once the season has started are extremely rare, particularly for leading clubs like Manchester City who plan for a long campaign by attacking every cup competition.

Last season City played 58 competitive matches, 61 the season before and 59 the previous year, and Pep Guardiola will be hoping and expecting for a similar amount this time.

But he’s also mindful about taking care of players who have such a heavy workload and with the added requirement of international football – even greater this year because of the mid-season World Cup in Qatar, so it might seem strange to add an extra unnecessary fixture.

However, the City boss was delighted to take his squad to Spain ahead of a charity fund-raiser at Camp Nou in support of former Barcelona goalkeeper and coach Juan Carlos Unzue, who was diagnosed with ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) two years ago.

Guardiola has spoken about the benefits of the trip and GOAL looks at who will gain from another match and how it could help their challenge for silverware this season…

Getty ImagesLuzon Foundation

First and foremost, the most important benefactor from the game is the foundation which carries out research into the incurable degenerative neurological condition.

All proceeds from the game will go towards ALS research, on behalf of Unzue, who is a former Barcelona team-mate of Guardiola, and 51,000 tickets have already been sold for the game.

“We go because Barcelona open doors to play a game for an important person in our lives,” Guardiola said. “They invite us to raise money for the battle that he has, and it is an incredible argument for us to be there.”

AdvertisementGetty ImagesPep Guardiola

Even in late August, no one can reasonably predict the current pleasant temperatures in Manchester, so a trip to Catalonia was a guarantee of some warm weather training.

City will base themselves at sister club Girona and will have a few days of team bonding, which began with a flight straight from the 3-3 draw at Newcastle and will see them return ahead of Saturday’s visit of Crystal Palace.

After an extended summer break for the squad compared to some of their rivals, City had a short preseason and the trip will also give the coach an opportunity to work on tactics ahead of the fixture schedule building up.

Kalvin Phillips

The £42million summer signing has so far played only four minutes following his move from Leeds and is likely to have an opportunity for more game time.

With only one game a week at the moment, it’s understandable that Guardiola has chosen Rodri as his go-to holding midfielder, partly because he’s attuned to the system, but also because he’s been in brilliant form for the past two seasons.

As the schedule starts to fire up over the upcoming weeks, Phillips will get his starts in a key position and Guardiola has said this game will give rhythm to players that have so far been on the periphery.

Exactly the same can be said for the Argentinian striker, who will not have expected to have started the opening matches ahead of the standout summer signing Erling Haaland.

Acclimatising to the Premier League will be slightly easier for Haaland who was born in Leeds and speaks English, but Guardiola says that he needs Alvarez to be a strong alternative.

“Now he has one game a week, I tell you now when we have games every three days that Erling will not play, I will play Julian,” Guardiola said after the draw with Newcastle.

Lionel Messi is Mr. Reliable! PSG winners, losers & ratings as Argentina star steps up with Mbappe & Neymar out

Lionel Messi scored a second-half winner against Toulouse on Saturday to lift the Ligue 1 leaders in the absence of Neymar and Kylian Mbappe.

Lionel Messi lurked for most of Paris Saint-Germain's contest against Toulouse. He floated around, enjoyed a few touches, and served as an unnerving presence, more a warning than an attacking threat.

But then, he came to life. As he always does. With PSG locked at 1-1 with the mid-table side, Messi drifted towards the top of the box, and whipped a loose ball into the bottom corner.

Messi has scored that goal countless times. And on this occasion, it lifted PSG to a vital Ligue 1 win.

Toulouse took the lead inside 20 minutes, with Branco van den Boomen sweeping a free kick past a wrong-footed Gianluigi Donnarumma.

PSG struggled for a creative spark in the fitness-related absence of Neymar and Kylian Mbappe, with Lionel Messi a peripheral figure in the early goings. Achraf Hakimi provided a moment of magic, though, firing into the bottom corner from 20 yards out to equalise.

Things changed in the second half, with Messi inevitably popping up with the goal to put his side ahead. Hakimi laid the ball off to the World Cup winner just outside the box, who curled his shot past a helpless goalkeeper.

Toulouse had one clear chance late on, but Donnarumma equaled a scrappy effort after a scramble in the box. And it was all about Messi in the end, the Argentine stepping up in the absence of Mbappe and Neymar, dragging PSG to the finish line.

Getty ImagesThe Winners

Achraf Hakimi:

On a day where PSG lacked creativity from their attacking players, Hakimi stepped up. He scored PSG's equaliser, cutting onto his weaker left foot before curling his effort into the far corner. Hakimi often found himself the furthest man forward, pushing down the right wing and stretching the Toulouse back-line. It was never likely to be a tricky defensive game for the Morocco international, and he made sure to impact play at the other end.

Lionel Messi:

Inevitable, wasn't it? Everything seemed primed for one of games for Messi. Neymar and Mbappe out, the team struggling to create, a dogged defensive opponent. And so it continued, with Toulouse keeping Messi quiet for long stretches. The goal, predictably, came. It was a vintage Messi strike, curled into the far corner from just outside the box, with no space to work with. The World Cup winner had little further impact on the game, but it didn't really matter. Their Argentine magician had done it. What a player.

Warren Zaire-Emery:

Rarely is a player so young so composed. Zaire-Emery became PSG's second-youngest ever Ligue 1 scorer with a calm finish midweek, and he built on that on Saturday. Yes, PSG have midfield injury problems. But the 16-year-old Zaire Emery was brought on for the misfiring Carlos Soler with 15 minutes remaining in a tight game — a clear indication of his manager's trust. This wasn't a flawless performance from the youngster – he looked a bit lost in more advanced positions – but every minute on the pitch is crucial for a player who looks increasingly ready to fulfil his potential as one of the world's best teenagers.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesThe Losers

Renato Sanches:

PSG manager Christophe Galtier really seems to like Sanches. The Portuguese midfielder played under him at Lille last year, and he's started to show signs of the midfielder many expected him to be when he burst onto the scene as a teenager. His PSG career, though, has been marred by time spent on the sidelines. The injury bug reared its head again on Saturday. Sanches seemed to clutch his thigh and was in tears as he walked off the pitch after just 11 minutes. At the very least, it's encouraging that Sanches could help himself off. But he could face more time off the pitch.

Carlos Soler:

In a way, Soler is tasked with a near impossible job. Although PSG change their style without Neymar, Soler is asked to do a similar thing: make runs forward and create in the final third. The issue is, Soler is not Neymar. Galtier, of course, knows this. But the expectation that the Spaniard should make something happen seems to weigh on him. Soler frequently tries to do too much, and some of his quality in the final third is lacking. He was better Saturday than sometimes in the recent past, especially when the game became more stretched. But in the early goings, Soler looked like a weak link. He has been agreeable, if unspectacular, since coming into the side due to a litany of injuries. The dropoff from any of PSG's front three to Soler is glaring, though.

Getty ImagesPSG Ratings: Defence

Gianluigi Donnarumma (6/10):

Wrong footed for Toulouse's opener, but redeemed himself with an impressive save late on.

Achraf Hakimi (8/10):

A memorable showing. Scored the first and assisted the second, and was often the furthest PSG player forward.

Marquinhos (7/10):

Some nice blocks, reliable passes.

Danilo Pereira (6/10):

Solid at the back, even better when moved to the no.6

Nuno Mendes (5/10):

Still working his way back to full fitness. Could've been sent off for a rash challenge when already on a yellow.

Carlos Soler (6/10):

Fine, but not Neymar. Which is tricky when you're supposed to be doing the stuff that Neymar does.

Renato Sanches (5/10):

Substituted within the first 15 minutes. Another injury blow for a player who just can't seem to stay fit.

Fabian Ruiz (5/10):

Followed a masterclass with an anonymous showing. A thoroughly strange footballer.

Vitinha (6/10):

Offered much-needed energy, got into the box quite a bit.

Partey and his colleagues will look to avoid successive losses when they travel to Aston Villa and keep their Top Four aspirations on track.

Mikel Arteta’s team have lost on their last two visits to Villa Park and Gerard's team will back themselves to make it three wins on the trot against the Gunners on their own turf.

There is plenty of African interest in the quarter-finals with several interesting ties in the last eight.

Crystal Palace’s Wilfried Zaha, Jordan Ayew, Cheick Kouyate and Jeffrey Schlupp look to get the better of Alex Iwobi's Everton, while Mohammed Salisu and Riyad Mahrez face off when Southampton host Manchester City.

In the other two ties, giant-killing Middlesbrough chase a third straight scalp when Hakim Ziyech and Edouard Mendy come to town, while Liverpool’s African contingent hope to avoid defeat at Nottingham Forest and keep their quadruple hopes alive.

    Koulibaly & Anguissa

Napoli’s 2-1 win over Cagliari last week meant they kept pace with AC Milan at the top of Serie A and they host Udinese on Saturday looking for their ninth win at Stadio Diego Armando Maradona.

Kalidou Koulibaly and Andre Zambo Anguissa are expected to feature for the whose home record has been rather hit and miss this term.

Luciano Spalletti’s team are winless in their last two home games, so a return to winning ways will be timely with Milan only three points ahead.

Lembra dele?

The hosts have won just one of their last six Premier League games against Newcastle. The Toffees find themselves in trouble as they are winless in five matches and are currently in the 18th spot with 28 points from 32 matches.

They are desperate for points but to crack Eddie Howe's Newcastle will be a tough challenge for them. However, they can look for inspiration from the exact fixture in the previous season where they staged an upset by beating the Magpies with 10 men, courtesy of Alex Iwobi's 99th-minute winner.

Meanwhile, Newcastle head into this fixture brimming with confidence after beating Tottenham 6-1 at the weekend. They will take a major step towards Champions League qualification if they pick up three points on Thursday as they are third on the table with 59 points from 31 matches.

Newcastle striker Callum Wilson has scored six goals in his last five Premier League games against Everton and will definitely look to better that record. Whereas, in Miguel Almiron (11), Wilson (11) and Alexander Isak (10), this is the first time that Newcastle have had as many as three different players reach double figures for goals in a Premier League season.
