Tottenham backed to sign like-for-like Bryan Gil replacement

Tottenham Hotspur ‘will be in the market’ for a like-for-like Bryan Gil replacement should the winger leave the Premier League club this week, according to Dharmesh Sheth.

The lowdown: Gil set for Valencia return

This comes as the 21-year-old is reportedly on the verge of returning to Valencia on loan, where he spent the second half of last season.

The Spain international was part of the pre-season preparations in north London, although he has been left on the bench for the opening three fixtures.

Should Gil leave Tottenham, one well-informed onlooker has suggested that Spurs could enter the market for a similar operator…

The latest: ‘Try and do a deal’

Speaking to GiveMeSport, Sheth claimed that Tottenham will attempt to replace the four-cap Spain starlet if his loan exit is sanctioned.

The Sky Sports reporter said: “I think Tottenham will be in the market to try and do a deal. I think Antonio Conte has been public in saying that he would bring in somebody if a member of his first-team squad left.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-latest-developments-2/” title=”Tottenham latest developments!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

“The Bryan Gil one is an interesting one, only because he was on the cusp of that first-team squad. I think he’s been impressed with Bryan Gil and what he did during pre-season and he’s been involved in a couple of the squads so far this season.

“But he’s basically a fringe player in that squad just now. So, whether he would bring in somebody who would replace Bryan Gil and walk straight into the first team, that’s questionable. It might just be to replace Bryan Gil, maybe with a young player potentially.”

The verdict: Options available

Linked with the likes of Anthony Gordon, Adama Traore, Ruslan Malinovskyi and Hakim Ziyech in recent days, it seems there are no shortage of options to explore in the market for Fabio Paratici.

However, out of those aforementioned candidates, only Gordon would fit the bill as a talented youngster with the potential to grow into something special in the future.

With Gil only likely to leave on a season-long loan, Tottenham would be wise to seek a similar deal for Conte’s squad and perhaps prepare for the return of the £16.2m-valued Spaniard, who has been described as a ‘really tricky’ operator by ex-Spurs defender Alan Hutton.

Tottenham: Lilywhites chasing late Hakim Ziyech deal

Tottenham Hotspur negotiations are ‘underway’ as they chase a late move for Chelsea winger Hakim Ziyech, according to reports.

The Lowdown: Spurs eye late move…

It’s been a summer to remember for Spurs supporters as their club make a plethora of signings and back manager Antonio Conte after his Champions League qualification last campaign.

The Premier League side have added Ivan Perisic, Fraser Forster, Yves Bissouma, Richarlison, Clement Lenglet, Djed Spence and Destiny Udogie to their squad whilst also completing the permanent signing of defender Cristian Romero recently.

As Deadline Day begins, they have one last chance to add another name or two to the squad and further strengthen Conte’s options, with news emerging on Ziyech.

The Latest: Ziyech negotiations begin…

Indeed, according to reports, it appears that the north Londoners have their sights on Chelsea’s international forward.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-latest-3/” title=”Tottenham latest!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Relevo claim that the Moroccan is attracting late interest from Fabio Paratici and co, with ‘negotiations underway’ to sign Ziyech before the deadline.

Tottenham are allegedly chasing a move for the 29-year-old, and ‘conditions with the player’  are ‘already on track’.

The Verdict: Get it done?

As Conte and Paratici seemingly chase a right-sided winger before the deadline, Ziyech could fit the bill.

The £100,000-per-week star, who has been called a ‘real handful’ on his day by former Leeds striker Noel Whelan, actually attempted Chelsea’s second highest rate of attempts at goal per 90 last season, with only Mason Mount managing a higher number (WhoScored).

Despite starting just 14 league games in 2021/22, he still chipped in with a respectable haul of four goals and three assists in the top flight (WhoScored).

It’s clear that Ziyech can pose a real threat when available and given the opportunity, leaving little surprise Spurs are eyeing a late move.

Newcastle close in on Alexander Isak

An update has emerged on Newcastle United and their pursuit of Alexander Isak in the summer transfer window…

What’s the talk?

Spanish outlet Diario Vasco have claimed that the club are on the verge of bringing the Swedish international to St. James’ Park.

Journalist Colin Millar translated the article, tweeting:

“Newcastle set to sign Real Sociedad striker and Sweden international Alexander Isak in a £59million deal, rising to £63million, saw local Basque media. Offer accepted and deal imminent.”

The Athletic’s David Ornstein has backed up their claim and Italian reporter Fabrizio Romano has provided a fresh update, Tweeting:

“Newcastle have already agreed personal terms with Alexander Isak and his agents. Final details discussed on add-ons structure and then deal completed with Real Sociedad, set to be signed. #NUFC Club record fee for Newcastle, also record sale for Real Sociedad.”

Forget about Callum Wilson

Although Wilson has scored two goals in the first three games of the Premier League season, the signing of Isak means that it could now be the time to forget about the Englishman.

Eddie Howe confirmed that the striker is set for a scan on a hamstring injury and it remains to be seen how long he will be sidelined for.

This should come as no shock to Magpies fans, though, as the attacker has missed 35 competitive matches since joining the club in the summer of 2020, compared to Isak’s five since 2019.

Wilson is an unreliable player when it comes to his availability and, at the age of 30, he is not getting any younger, which is why replacing him with Isak as the first-choice number nine could be a good move by the club.

Spanish journalist Guillem Balague has claimed that the Swedish will suit Howe’s style of play “as he is very fast” and “good driving the ball”.

These attributes could allow him to thrive in the manager’s pressing system as it creates counter-attacking opportunities and he can use his speed to burst forward – not giving opposition defenders a chance to catch up with him. Rio Ferdinand once dubbed him a “nuisance” and he could use his work rate and pace to force errors out of teams.

Wilson has scored 22 goals in the top-flight since the start of the 2020/21 campaign, whilst Isak has found the back of the net 24 times in La Liga in the same timeframe.

This suggests that he could offer a similar level of quality in front of goal, whilst suiting the team’s style of play, and having the scope to develop further.

His former teammate Chinedu Obasi previously said that Isak has “enormous potential” and he has plenty of years to prove him right, at the age of 22. He could be Newcastle’s starting striker for many seasons to come and it will now be down to Howe to get the best out of him.

Sunderland eyeing Charlton ace Clare

Sunderland are reportedly fighting a number of their rivals in the Championship to sign Sean Clare.

The Lowdown: Great start

Clare has had a great start to the season at Charlton Athletic, helping his team to two wins and two draws in their opening five games in League One, while also qualifying for the third round of the Carabao Cup (Transfermarkt).

Hailed as someone who ‘plays out of his skin every week’ by talkSPORT’s Tash Everitt, it is no surprise to see clubs showing interest in him.

The Latest: Sunderland interest

As per Football League World, Alex Neil’s side are among a number of clubs interested in Clare, with fellow Championship rivals Huddersfield Town and Norwich City also battling it out for his signature.

However, Charlton are keen to tie him down to a new contract, with his current deal set to expire at the end of the season.

The Verdict: Get it done

With both Norwich and Huddersfield also sniffing around for Clare, this is a deal that the Black Cats need to get done as soon as possible.

If he does not sign a new contract at Charlton, then the Addicks may be tempted to cash in on him before the transfer window closes, at the risk of losing him for free next year.

This could give SAFC a potentially bargain price to pay for a player who can play in several different positions across the pitch.

Nonetheless, Clare is 25 years of age, and so will be hitting his prime over the next few years, with versatility and talent for Neil to tap into long-term.

Leeds: Orta interested in Ashby

Leeds United are interested in a deal to bring Harrison Ashby to Elland Road over the final hours of the summer transfer window.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to Alan Nixon, with The Sun journalist revealing in a recent post on his Patreon that Victor Orta is now plotting a late swoop for the West Ham United right-back – who Newcastle are also reported to be chasing in a £2.5m deal.

Regarding the Whites’ interest in the 20-year-old, Nixon said: “Leeds United are making a surprise late bid for West Ham right back Harrison Ashby. The Elland Road club have asked about promising Ashby who would have a better chance of a game for them. Ashby is willing to move but Hammers have an injury or two at the back and he is also needed for their homegrown quotas.”

Another Orta steal

Considering just how exciting a prospect Ashby evidently is, should Orta manage to bring the right-back to Elland Road for anywhere near the reported £2.5m fee, it would undoubtedly represent another steal by the Whites’ director of football.

Indeed, the Spaniard is building an impressive reputation for signing some of the most exciting talents in English football at extremely reasonable prices, with the likes of Joe Gelhardt costing the club just £1.1m, Sam Greenwood setting Leeds back a mere £1.5m, Lewis Bate costing around £1.5m and Sonny Perkins arriving on a free.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/leeds-transfer-news-deadline-day-lufc-the-whites-premier-league” title=”Read the latest Leeds news, transfer rumours and so much more!”]

And, with Ashby very much appearing to be a player who boasts an incredible amount of potential, should Orta manage to add the Scotland U21 international to his ever-growing list of young recruits for a figure in the region of £2.5m, the defender could well prove to be one of the Spaniard’s best yet.

Indeed, the £270k-rated talent highly impressed for the Hammers’ U21 side last season, scoring two goals and providing five assists over his three outings in the EFL Trophy.

Furthermore, those in the know at West Ham clearly believe the right-back is destined for great things further down the line, with podcaster Sam Delaney previously stating of the defender: “He’s big as well. He’s like a big unit. He’s only young, but he’s like a giant. Usually, you’re used to seeing smaller players in those wing-back positions, but he looked big, strong, he was very fearless, decent on the ball.”

As such, with Ashby looking to be an extremely exciting young player, signing the talent for a figure of just £2.5m would indeed appear something of a steal for the Whites – evidence that Orta is once again working his magic in the window as it rapidly draws to a close.

Everton closing in on James Garner

Everton are reportedly nearing a deal for Manchester United midfielder James Garner, having been heavily linked with the youngster in recent weeks.

What’s the word?

Transfer insider Dean Jones – speaking to GIVEMESPORT – had revealed that the Toffees were still in the mix to sign the 21-year-old, with reports earlier this month revealing that United are open to offers for the Englishman.

With the Merseysiders having reportedly been in discussions regarding a deal for the playmaker, Jones stated: “They are definitely still in that conversation for Garner as well.

“So, we’ll find out very quickly where Everton are going to be in terms of shaping up this season because if they don’t get three people through the door, Frank Lampard knows that he’s in a relegation battle.”

The latest suggestion is that the England U21 international – who spent last season on loan at Nottingham Forest – is now closing in on a £15m switch to Goodison Park, with journalist Fabrizio Romano revealing that “a full agreement” has been reached between United and the Toffees for his signature after a bid was accepted.

Better than Gomes?

The highly-rated prospect has been unable to force his way into Erik ten Hag’s plans at Old Trafford in recent months, hence the Red Devils’ desire to sell, although their loss could well be Frank Lampard’s gain with the 44-year-old able to acquire a real emerging talent.

While the £6.3m-rated ace has made just two Premier League appearances in his career thus far, he has more than shown his quality in the second tier of late, notably starring at the City Ground last season as Steve Cooper’s side romped to promotion.

A key figure in the Welshman’s side, the £17k-per-week sensation scored four goals and provided eight assists in 41 games in all competitions from his central midfield berth, recording an impressive 7.26 average match rating in the process, as per SofaScore – the highest in the entire Forest squad.

Lauded as “exceptional” for that stunning run of form in the Championship by pundit Paul Robinson, the Birkenhead-born starlet has been tipped for big things throughout his time at his current club, with former boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer previously suggesting that he is going to be a “top player” in the years to come.

An exciting addition then for Lampard and co, his arrival could well hasten an exit for current Toffees man Andre Gomes, with the 29-year-old having been heavily linked with a move away from the club this summer.

Hampered by injury throughout his time in England, the Portugal international – who signed from Barcelona on an initial loan deal back in 2018 – has largely underwhelmed in his Everton career to date, scoring just twice in 100 appearances across all competitions for the club, laying on only seven assists.

That is a dismal return for a progressive midfielder player – particularly in comparison to Garner’s record from last term – with journalist Paul Brown previously suggesting that the 29-cap dud has “gone backwards” since arriving in the Premier League.

Seemingly now a fading force, Gomes could well find himself rightly replaced should the United gem, who is quite evidently a younger upgrade, be secured before Thursday’s deadline.

Newcastle gifted Fraser injury boost

Newcastle United have been gifted an injury boost before they play Manchester City at home in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon.

The Lowdown: Tough ask

Despite their good start to the season, from which they have collected four points from their first two games in the Premier League, getting anything out of Man City will be a tough ask for the St. James’ Park outfit.

City have also started the season off strongly, with maximum points from their first two matches, and look hungry to retain their top-flight title once more.

The Latest: Fraser update

Speaking to the media in his pre-game press conference ahead of the match, Eddie Howe has revealed that he hopes that Ryan Fraser will be ‘fit and available’, after he was withdrawn from the squad that drew 0-0 away at Brighton and Hove Albion last week:

“Ryan Fraser we hope will be fit and available. He had a back spasm late last week so he was a late withdrawal from the Brighton game.”

The Verdict: Boost

The North East club will need all of their experienced players available to give them the best possible chance of getting anything from City, and so having Fraser back would be a boost.

The Scotland international picked up a handy two goals and three assists in the Premier League last season, and ranked highly among his teammates in terms of average key passes and crosses per game (WhoScored).

His delivery could be key against Pep Guardiola’s side, especially if Chris Wood is thrown on from the bench late on.

Leeds ‘eye’ late move for 55-goal forward

Leeds United ‘have half an eye’ on Coventry City striker Viktor Gyokeres, according to transfer insider Dean Jones.

The Lowdown: Gyokeres profiled

Gyokeres is primarily a centre-forward who can also play on the wing and joined Coventry on a permanent basis from Brighton last year.

The Sweden international has scored 55 senior goals for club and country during his career, 22 of which have come for his current employers.

The 24-year-old is valued at a career-high £4.5m by Transfermarkt and has been labelled as a powerful player by Coventry manager Mark Robins.

The Latest: Leeds links

Jones was talking to GiveMeSport regarding Leeds’ search for a striker and name-checked Gyokeres as a potential late new target.

“They have half an eye on Gyokeres at Coventry, and I’ve still got a feeling that if they were to go down that route, they might end up turning to him instead (of Brereton Diaz).”

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-news-50/” title=”Latest Leeds United news” poster=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/cropped-2022-03-10T184055Z_1834933207_UP1EI3A1FW561_RTRMADP_3_SOCCER-ENGLAND-LEE-AVA-REPORT-1-scaled-1.jpg” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Premier League ready?

Leeds are in need of a new forward before this evening’s deadline, especially following Rodrigo’s suspected dislocated shoulder injury on Tuesday evening.

Gyokeres could well be a gamble by Leeds chiefs, despite coming off his best season in front of goal last season. He netted 18 goals for Coventry last season, however, he has no top-flight experience in England and still seems to be finding his feet in the second tier with just four goals during the 2020/21 campaign.

Leeds officials may well view Gyokeres as a cheaper alternative to someone like Hwang Hee-chan, though, so it could be one to keep an eye on.

Denayer could be Andersen 2.0 for Fulham

Fulham have been linked with Jason Denayer recently and the free agent could prove to be the next Joachim Andersen in Marco Silva’s side.

Recent reports have suggested that Fulham could look to bring in the Belgian centre-back, who is available on a free transfer after leaving Olympique Lyon earlier in the summer.

The former Manchester City man enjoyed the most fruitful spell of his career thus far in France, making 139 appearances for Les Gones, in which he contributed eight goals and three assists.

Denayer has experience of Premier League football, having featured 27 times for Sunderland during a loan spell in the 2016/17 season and could return to the top flight a much better player than the one who left Manchester City for Lyon in 2018.

Last season saw the 27-year-old defender make just 15 appearances in Ligue 1 for Lyon, so it is easy to see why he left the club on a free transfer, but Fulham could be the ones to benefit.

Should he arrive at Craven Cottage, he could prove to be another Andersen, with the Danish defender becoming a fan favourite at the club during the 2020/21 Premier League season despite relegation from the top flight.

The centre-back, who joined Fulham on loan from Lyon, looked a cut above in the Cottagers’ side and was ranked by WhoScored as their fourth-best performer across the season of those to make at least 10 starts.

He has since gone on to establish himself as a solid centre-back in the Premier League with Crystal Palace, with his physicality and passing ability evident in his performances for the Eagles.

Andersen’s former coach Svend Graversen spoke highly of the defender’s passing ability to The Athletic, saying:

“He was the leader in defence — I put him at centre-back but he was normally a midfielder. You could see the calmness on the ball, his awareness, especially the space in front of him in the defence was very good.”

Denayer could emulate this in Fulham’s side should he make the move to Craven Cottage, as FBref ranks him in the top percentile for pass completion when compared to other centre-backs.

Even as a youngster, Denayer’s ability on the ball as a defender was evident, as former Belgium boss Marc Wilmots testified.

He said: “Always calm. I’ve never seen him nervous; he has a lot of confidence and there will be someone with experience standing next to him.”

Therefore, the similarities between Andersen and Denayer are clear to see and considering he is available on a free transfer, it is surely a no-brainer for Silva to bring him to Craven Cottage.

Aston Villa in the race to sign Bednarek

Aston Villa could reportedly seal a deadline day deal for Southampton defender Jan Bednarek.

What’s the news?

In a recent Twitter post, journalist Toby Cudworth said on the matter: “Hearing Jan Bednarek could now be heading to Aston Villa on loan and not #WHUFC as previously thought – transfer deadline day twists and turns have started.”

As Cudworth mentioned in his tweet, the defender has also been linked with a move to West Ham United this summer.

Southampton signed the centre-back from Lech Poznan in the summer of 2017. Since then, the 26-year-old has gone on to make 153 appearances for the Saints across all competitions, chipping in with seven goals and four assists along the way.

Could be a “monster” for Gerrard

To highlight his defensive capabilities, the Poland international made more interceptions (95) than any other Southampton player in the league last season, along with the second-highest number of clearances (169) and third-highest number of blocks (64).

Described as a “monster” by journalist Sam Tighe, Bednarek could be a very useful signing for the Midlands club if they get him in, as only three other Premier League clubs have faced more shots on target than Villa (26) so far this season.

Also, with Diego Carlos out injured, adding an experienced and capable defender like the Saints colossus to their squad could be a very smart move from Villa.

Having been an unused substitute for Southampton’s three previous league matches, a move to Villa Park – where he may have a better chance of playing regularly – could be what the player is craving.

With the Villans reportedly set to welcome Leander Dendoncker to the club – having had a £13m offer accepted by Wolves – snatching Bednarek from the clutches of rival suitors West Ham on the same day would certainly show how ruthless NSWE can be in the transfer market and continue their track record of signing players from fellow English clubs.

If Villa are able to seal the Southampton defender’s signature, even on a loan deal as Cudworth said in his tweet, this will give Steven Gerrard’s side some extra strength and depth at the back, which could be most welcome having conceded nine goals in their opening five league matches of the campaign.
