Fulham: Silva Eyeing Late Move For "Valuable" Star

Fulham and manager Marco Silva appear to be pursuing a late move for Arsenal defender Rob Holding as news emerges before deadline day.

Who will Fulham sign?

The west Londoners have undergone a fairly solid start to this new Premier League campaign, having sealed a win, draw and loss over their trio of opening league games.

Their most impressive results have come most recently, though, with Fulham sealing a dramatic late draw away to title contenders Arsenal courtesy of a last gasp equaliser from midfielder Joao Palhinha.

Fulham have also just knocked high-flying Tottenham out of the Carabao Cup second round, as Tete's decisive spot-kick sealed a penalty shoot out win and their place in the draw's third-round on Tuesday night.

There is clearly momentum to build upon with these results as Silva's side attempt to improve on last year's mid-table finish, and they have been tipped to be one of the busier clubs over these last few days of the transfer window

Indeed, having already sealed deals for Calvin Bassey, Raul Jimenez, Adama Traore and Timothy Castagne, Fulham are believed to also be chasing late deals for Sevilla striker Lucas Ocampos and Everton midfielder Alex Iwobi.

Speaking late last month, Silva highlighted the need for further additions, with former star striker Alexandar Mitrovic since joining Saudi Arabian side Al-Hilal.

"Unfortunately, we need many still. We have some important players injured,” Silva said.

“I hope they can come sooner. We have just two full backs, we need a midfielder too and we have just two wingers so we need another two wingers."

According to a report this week, Fulham also want to bolster their central defensive ranks once more after the signing of Bassey, coming as Tosin Adarabioyo remains linked with a late exit.

Holding, who will be allowed to leave Arsenal amid "significant" interest across Europe, is one player being targeted by Fulham for this role.

This information comes courtesy of 90min, who claim that Fulham have already approached Arsenal over signing Holding in the form of an enquiry.

Arsenal defender Rob Holding.

As well as Fulham, clubs from La Liga, the Bundesliga and Ligue 1.are also eyeing a late move before September 1, with Holding now entering the final year of his Arsenal deal which expires in 2024.

The Englishman's contract, though, contains an optional clause to extend it by a further 12 months.

How good is Rob Holding?

Holding has struggled to fight his way into Arteta's plans this season, with Gabriel Magalhaes, William Saliba and Ben White all ahead of him.

However, the 27-year-old has been praised for his influence and value behind-the-scenes. Journalist Charles Watts, speaking after Holding stepped in for the injured Saliba last term, called him a "very valuable" member of the dressing room.

"Clearly, people who were there [at the Emirates] said he played well," said Watts last season.

"And he's no Saliba, there's no doubt about it, but as a squad player, I think he's a very valuable, and really, really influential figure behind the scenes. Everyone loves him at Arsenal.”

Perhaps a second chance to assert himself on the pitch at Fulham is needed.

Zaryab 74* sees Pakistan through to semi-finals

Ali Zaryab’s second straight half-century steered Pakistan into the semi-finals of the Under-19 World Cup, with a slightly tense three-wicket win against South Africa in Christchurch. Chasing 190, Pakistan were wobbling at 111 for 5 before Zaryab scored an unbeaten and patient 74 off 111 balls to see his side through.Pakistan started slow in the chase, losing their top order for 63 runs in 15.1 overs. Zaryab, batting at No. 4, tried to stitch partnerships but could not put together more than 32 runs with captain Hasan Khan as offspinner Jason Niemand struck twice and Pakistan were five down after 26 overs. Zaryab was on 31 then and Pakistan needed 79 more, but at a required rate of just over three runs per over. After Zaryab and Saad Khan played out two maidens, they kept the score ticking with singles and doubles. Zaryab soon brought up his half-century and Saad struck three fours in their sixth-wicket stand of 65 but holed out to deep midwicket for 26. South Africa gave them another scare by dismissing Pakistan’s seventh wicket for a first-ball duck but Zaryab’s knock took them home.Earlier, Pakistan made good use of their decision to bowl as left-arm pacer Shaheen Afridi removed the openers in the first 10 overs and right-arm quick Muhammad Musa struck in consecutive overs to leave South Africa reeling on 43 for 4 in 15 overs. Wicketkeeper-batsman Wandile Makwetu revived the innings with a counter-attacking half-century with some support from the lower order. He took them past 100 with Jean du Plessis (21) but was accounted for by Musa with a short ball which Makwetu pulled to deep square leg for 60. Niemand scored a crucial 36 runs at No. 7 to take them close to 200 but a couple of run-outs restricted them to 189 for 9.Musa finished with 3 for 29 after bowling 44 dot balls in his 10 overs and Afridi ended with 2 for 30 to lead the wicket-takers’ chart in the tournament with a tally of 11 wickets from four matches.

Rangers’ 77-Touch Titan Was Beale’s Real Hero Vs County

Glasgow Rangers secured a solid 2-0 victory over Ross County in the pouring rain at Dingwall, setting them up nicely for the trip to Eindhoven in midweek.

Michael Beale made a few changes from the 2-2 draw against PSV at Ibrox on Tuesday, and this included a start for Kemar Roofe – his first since April 2022.

Having lost their first Premiership tie against Kilmarnock and slipping immediately behind Celtic, all three points were required, and they duly delivered.

How did Rangers perform vs Ross County?

A solid, if unspectacular performance secured another win, and Beale will be pleased by how comfortably the game went by, especially in the first half.

Captain James Tavernier led by example with yet another wonderful performance, and his goal was a sight to behold.

Striding forward with purpose, the right-back looked in a menacing mood and unleashed a stunning, dipping shot that nestled into the top corner to give the Light Blues a two-goal advantage following Kemar Roofe’s opener.

Alongside his goal, the Englishman also demonstrated how effective he is going forward by making four key passes during the tie, while also succeeding with one successful dribble and taking three shots during the game.

Defensively, he won 50% of his ground duels along with making one tackle and one interception, as well as committing just one foul, which was good enough to help his team keep a clean sheet.

Read the latest Rangers transfer news HERE…

But as good as Tavernier was, it was centre-back John Souttar who was an absolute rock at the back for Beale against the Highland side, and he was a major contributing factor to the club keeping a clean sheet.

How did John Souttar perform against Ross County?

Speaking to the media before this match, fellow defender Leon Balogun praised the Scot, saying:

“I think he’s a very strong player. Last season didn’t go the way he planned as he got injured early on. Since I’ve come back, you can see that he’s a good defender and there are a few things that I’ve wanted to copy from him.

“We’ve got really good defenders in the backline and there’s no point being sour because we have big targets this season. In order to achieve them, you need a strong squad and that’s what we have.”

John Souttar

Against County, Souttar was a rock, while also showing how comfortable he is on the ball by taking 77 touches and completing 48 passes as he looked to start attacks from the back often.

Souttar won eight of nine total duels during the match, showcasing his physicality. He also made seven clearances, three interceptions and two tackles, and wasn’t dribbled past once across the 90 minutes.

It was a commanding performance by the former Hearts defender, and he has certainly emerged as a first-choice centre-back alongside Connor Goldson.

With two tough games against PSV and Celtic to come next week, seeing the 26-year-old in this sort of form will undoubtedly please Beale ahead of tougher tasks.

UAE open campaign with breezy victory

Seamer Mohammad Naveed contributed much to PNG’s slide, taking career-best ODI figures of 5 for 28

ESPNcricinfo staff04-Mar-2018Peter Della PennaMahuru Dai receives one demerit point

Papua New Guinea allrounder Mahuru Dai has received an official warning and one demerit point for violating Article 2.1.8 of the ICC code of conduct, which relates to “abuse of cricket equipment or clothing, ground equipment or fixtures and fittings during an international match”.
The incident occurred during PNG’s revised chase of 170, after Dai was caught by the substitute fielder off Rohan Mustafa. Dai admitted the offence, and accepted the sanction.

United Arab Emirates (UAE) kicked off their World Cup Qualifiers campaign on a very positive note, easing past Papua New Guinea (PNG) in a rain-hit encounter in Harare. PNG’s target was revised from 222 to 170 from 28 after a rain break, and they didn’t get close, folding for 113. Seamer Mohammad Naveed contributed much to this slide, taking career-best ODI figures of 5 for 28.At one point PNG looked in danger of missing out on triple digits, falling to 70 for 8; none of their top five got past 12, and the innings’ top score was 24 from No. 6 Charles Amini who was eventually run out.It was PNG who chose to chase, and UAE looked like there were keen to make them pay for this decision from the outset. Their openers Rohan Mustafa and Ashfaq Ahmed put on 91 at a brisk pace, but none could kick on to big hundreds. PNG enjoyed some relief after Ashfaq fell for 50 off 56, taking two more quick wickets. The UAE middle order could not quite get going thereafter, and Mustafa was kept in check too – he eventually fell five short of a hundred, having played out 136 balls. PNG must have felt relieved to have only 222 to chase, given UAE’s start. However, rain and Naveed intervened and spoiled those plans.

Dananjaya takes five as Sri Lanka clinch series

Akila Dananjaya celebrates a wicket on debut•Associated Press

Bangladesh plunged, Sri Lanka’s spinners soared and the Mirpur Test tore to its conclusion midway through day three, the visitors triumphing by 215 runs. Debutant Akila Dananjaya was prime destroyer. He scythed rapidly through the Bangladesh lower-middle order, taking 5 for 24 to make it eight wickets on debut – the best performance by a Sri Lankan on debut. The charge to victory was also sweet for Rangana Herath, who claimed 4 for 49 and in doing so, became the most successful left-arm bowler in Test history. After even Sri Lanka’s lower order had batted with a little mettle, the rate of Bangladesh’s demise in this Test will irk the hosts. Only four batsmen made it into double figures, and no one batted for longer than 51 deliveries. The pitch was as treacherous as ever, but chances were too freely given. Perhaps, chasing a highly improbable 339, and with little chance of saving the game, the futility of their situation contributed to their meekness. It took Sri Lanka fewer than 30 overs to clean the opposition up. This was Bangladesh’s first series defeat at home since 2015 – the absence of Shakib Al Hasan keenly felt. The selection of Dananjaya – out of all Sri Lanka’s teams until seven months ago, and considered a limited-overs specialist in any case – has proved to be a spectacular move in this Test. Though he bowled only 15 overs in the game (fewer than either of the senior spinners), the overspin he puts on the ball made him a menacing prospect. Repeatedly he had balls leap up off a length, and one such ball struck Liton Das in the glove, and was caught at short leg. Sabbir Rahman was also caught off his glove; Mahmudullah edged another Dananjaya delivery that jumped at him; and Mehidy Hasan nicked a straighter delivery. Wicketkeeper Niroshan Dickwella helped Dananjaya along to his maiden five-wicket haul. He pulled off a fast stumping of Abdur Razzak when the batsman had merely overbalanced. Dananjaya’s 8 for 44 comprise the best debut figures for a Sri Lanka bowler. While Dananjaya took care of the lower half of the Bangladesh batting order, Herath’s best work had come earlier on. One ball after he had been tonked for six by Imrul Kayes, he sent a slider at the batsman, and had him edging behind. Mominul Haque – again Bangladesh’s best batsman – was given a light working over, and eventually nicked Herath to Dickwella as well. The wicket that sealed the match was also Herath’s. Taijul Islam aimed a gigantic heave over cow corner, but Danushka Gunathilaka was at the boundary to take an outstanding overhead catch. Bangladesh had lost their last five wickets in the space of 33 balls. The visitors’ lead had been 312 even at the beginning of the day – much more than necessary, as it would turn out – but their batting in the first 50 minutes of the day was more indication that this Sri Lanka Test side is rediscovering a little of its old grit. Roshen Silva, the newest member of the top order, added 12 to his overnight score, while Suranga Lakmal, living a little more dangerously, struck boundaries to help swell Sri Lanka’s lead by 26. Only one Bangladesh partnership – the 46-run second-wicket association between Mominul and Kayes – was better than this 36-run stand between Roshen and Lakmal. That Chandika Hathurusingha, their coach only four months ago, helped plan their own downfall in this series, will of course sting.

Leeds: £5m Marsch signing has seen his value soar by 360%

Leeds United have had little to shout about over the last year, given their miserable run of form, persisting defensive frailties and eventual relegation.

It was a year that saw three different managers endure a stint in the dugout, with Daniel Farke having emerged out the other end as the man now trusted to lead the Whites into a brighter future.

He has already taken great strides towards this goal with a fine summer transfer window, where he carefully negotiated the various pitfalls that the previous regime had left for him, to finish with a squad still worthy of a title run.

Having already hit the ground running with Ethan Ampadu and Joe Rodon's acquisitions, despite winning just once in the Championship, Deadline Day saw a further three new faces welcomed in a last-gasp scramble to provide ample competition to his stars.

However, it was marred by the late exit of Luis Sinisterra, which did leave a sour taste in the mouths of supporters given his reintegration back into the first team.

Things could have been far worse though, had they also lost Wilfried Gnonto earlier in the window, which reports had suggested they were very close to.

Who is Leeds United's most valuable player?

Given the numerous departures that Farke was forced to oversee this summer, the label of their most valuable player has shifted dramatically. Especially considering how their relegation dented the value of most of their stars, given the weakened position they were forced into.

After all, to get just £20m for Tyler Adams marked poor business given they had paid the same amount the year prior, particularly given he was one of few shining lights last term in the Premier League.

The same can be said for the various loan deals suffered, with Brenden Aaronson, Max Wober, Marc Roca and more all leaving, despite having only joined within the last year for £24.5m, £11m and £10m respectively.

So, now there is just a small group of players who sit atop the club's list for highest market value, with the Italy international in Gnonto being one of those stars.

Wilfried Gnonto

Having joined last summer in a Deadline Day move, the teenage star quickly became a mainstay under Jesse Marsch, dazzling defenders and endearing himself to the Elland Road crowd with his dynamism and direct play style. Then, to notch eight goal contributions across all senior English competitions marked a fine return for what was his first year in a new country.

Such form understandably merited praise, which pundit Tam McManus gladly offered: "The boy who got the assist, he came on and he just looks like a little pocket rocket. Wow, what a performance from him. He looks like he has a real low centre of gravity and he looks absolutely tremendous."

This ability in possession is best outlined when compared to other wingers across Europe, as Gnonto manages to rank in the top 17% for progressive carries per 90, with his speed and powerfully short stature a key factor in that success.

So, it was no surprise to see his services well sought-after this summer.

How much was Wilfried Gnonto worth before joining Leeds?

Having spent the bulk of his youth career with Inter Milan, in 2020 the 5 foot 7 dynamo made the bold choice to trade his homeland for Switzerland, signing for FC Zurich. He would swiftly break into the first team and saw his value skyrocket accordingly.

With the first recorded valuation sitting at a lowly €1m (£855k) as of December 2020, by the time of his exit this had risen to a lofty €10m (£8.5m). This made the eventual fee that the Yorkshire outfit would sign him for even more of a coup.

wilfried-gnonto-transfer-gossip-leeds-united-farke-joseph-paintsil-genk

In total he made 74 appearances for the club, scoring 12 and assisting ten. However, it was his performances since moving to England that really put him on the map.

How much did Leeds United sign Wilfried Gnonto for?

To view those aforementioned figures in relation to how much Marsch actually paid for Gnonto, it is crazy just how much of a bargain this deal was.

However, there was a potentially different outcome that was pushed to the side, as the speedster was actually due to join in the following January, with a deal having been agreed weeks before his eventual move.

Victor Orta and Jesse Marsch celebrate Leeds United's survival on the final day of the Premier League season.

Despite that, failed ventures to sign Cody Gakpo and Bamba Dieng saw them alter the stipulations of the move, fast-tracking it to that very summer despite journalist Phil Hay reporting: "Marsch says Gnonto wouldn't be Premier League ready. Would be a longer-term thing and not certain to happen in this window."

They would spend just £5m to bring him to Yorkshire, with that fee having since soared given the platform they offered him to shine on, which he took with both hands. He proved his former boss wrong instantly, by shining at the top level with ease.

What is Wilfried Gnonto's market value now?

Such was the nature of his performances, the young Italy international understandably drew plenty of interest. Everton were reportedly one such club who continued to push for his services, firing off numerous bids to no avail.

Gnonto would even hand in a transfer request as he sought to force through the move, but Farke remained steadfast on his stance: the wide man would not be leaving.

Rejecting £25m for his services was bold, but clearly the German manager saw him as an integral part of any promotion success they hoped to achieve. After all, that fee would have made him their largest outlay for the window.

Leeds United forward Wilfried Gnonto.

Such persistent interest from the Toffees, as well as a brief flirtation with Tottenham Hotspur, only serves to emphasise just how highly-rated the youngster now is. Football Transfers even value him at €26.7m (£23m), suggesting that had they accepted that offer from the Merseyside outfit, it would have marked a deal made above market value.

Such a figure helps to track the steady progression of Gnonto, as it can be compared to his initial transfer fee as a marker for how far he has come. Across just 12 months, his value has soared by 360%, by taking what first Leeds paid and comparing it with his current valuation.

Having since been welcomed back into the starting side, and with the transfer window now slammed shut, there will be hope around Yorkshire that he can put his head down and work towards earning an instant Premier League return, truly proving his worth. Irrespective of this summer's events, they have certainly struck gold with their initial investment.

"Outstanding…" – Pundit reacts after hearing who Celtic could sign

Pundit Alan Hutton has been reacting to news on who Celtic’s top transfer target appears to be heading into the New Year.

What’s the latest Celtic transfer news?

The Hoops and Brendan Rodgers were busy over the summer in the transfer market after the Northern Irishman made the return to Parkhead.

On the pitch, things have begun relatively well aside from the League Cup defeat to Kilmarnock, with Celtic top of the Scottish Premiership following a Glasgow derby win at Ibrox prior to the international break.

In total, Celtic brought in 10 new players, eight of which arrived on permanent deals at a cost of just under £20m. The club were in profit, though, after Jota made the move to Saudi Pro League side Al Ittihad in a move worth £25m, with Carl Starfelt also moving on.

Despite a productive few months and plenty of new faces coming in, it looks as if those at Celtic Park are already planning for 2024 and further additions.

Reports have suggested that Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher was a target in the summer and contact was made over a transfer.

However, the Reds weren’t willing to let the shot-stopper go, which has led to the player being top of Rodgers’ wanted list heading into January. The Celtic boss wants a long-term replacement for Joe Hart and the Irishman would be keen on a move to Glasgow.

Talking to Football Insider, Hutton, who contributes for the BBC, labelled Kelleher as “outstanding” and feels he “would be an excellent recruit”, albeit a “little bit harsh on Joe Hart”.

“Every time I have seen Kelleher play he has been outstanding.

“It has got to a stage where he must be desperate to play regular football. Would he be a good fit for Celtic? Of course he would but I think it has been a little bit harsh on Joe Hart.

“I know he has made a few mistakes and is not the best when it comes to playing the ball with his feet but I think he has done well at Celtic. “I think all the criticism that has been aimed at him is a little bit harsh but I understand if Brendan Rodgers wants to play a particular way and is looking elsewhere. I get that and I think Kelleher would be an excellent recruit for the squad.”

Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher.

Who is Caoimhin Kelleher?

Kelleher is 24 years of age and has been on the books at Anfield since 2015 when he left Irish side Ringmahon.

The goalkeeper is now valued at a career-high €12m by Transfermarkt and has made 21 senior appearances for the Reds, keeping 10 clean sheets in the process.

He has mainly served as a backup to Alisson Becker on Merseyside in the Premier League, turning out in cup competitions, and has actually won the most shootouts of any goalkeeper in Liverpool's history (four).

Therefore, the chance of regular first-team football at Celtic could appeal to Kelleher, and by the looks of things, a move could be one to keep an eye on.

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has appealed against the ICC’s “below average” rating of the Shere Bangla National Stadium’s pitch during the second Test against Sri Lanka earlier this month. The appeal will be heard by March 14 as per the period stipulated in the pitch monitoring process and will be determined by Geoff Allardice, the ICC’s general manager (cricket), and Anil Kumble, the chairperson of the cricket committee.David Boon, who was the match referee during the Test series, reported at the time that the pitch had uneven bounce throughout the match and inconsistent turn. It resulted in the Dhaka ground incurring one demerit point, which will remain on its record for a rolling five-year period.ESPNcricinfo understands that the BCB’s appeal is centered on the argument that the pitch wasn’t a departure from the usual surfaces in Dhaka given the weather and conditions at that time of the year. The hosts were crushed by Sri Lanka by 215 runs, in a contest in which the highest team total was 226. Spinners took 30 of the 38 wickets that fell to the bowlers.BCB’s appeal will be determined taking into consideration the match referee’s report, the report from the home board, videos of the match, and the grounds for appeal as submitted by the BCB on Wednesday.

Alexander-Arnold, Konate, Thiago: Liverpool Injury Updates

Liverpool aren't without injury problems at the moment and journalist James Pearce has now dropped a significant update regarding Trent Alexander-Arnold, following the weekend victory over Aston Villa.

Who is injured for Liverpool?

The Reds had a tough-looking start to their Premier League season when the fixtures were released earlier this summer, with four matches before the international break looking taxing. They have passed with flying colours, however, picking up ten points in an extremely promising opening.

On Sunday afternoon, Liverpool swatted aside a much-fancied Villa team, winning 3-0 at Anfield thanks to Dominik Szoboszlai's opener, Matty Cash's own goal and a Mohamed Salah strike in the second half. It was arguably their best performance of the campaign to date, as confidence continues to grow about a potential title challenge being mounted.

The Reds did it all without Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate at centre-back, too, with both Joel Matip and Joe Gomez impressing greatly at the heart of the defence.

Konate is still absent through injury, as is Thiago, and another player who has also now picked up a knock is Trent Alexander-Arnold, who was playing superbly before walking straight down the tunnel with a hamstring issue in the second half.

The 24-year-old ran the show with his passing ability, creating endless chances for teammates, and Jurgen Klopp will be sweating about his availability once the international break is done and dusted later this month.

jarrod-bowen-trent-alexander-arnold-liverpool-transfer-premier-league

How long is Trent Alexander-Arnold out for?

Taking to Twitter, The Athletic's Pearce claimed that Alexander-Arnold will now have a scan to find out the severity of the injury, but confirmed he is a "major doubt" for at least the next fortnight:

"Alexander-Arnold set for scan on hamstring problem. Major doubt for England duty."

This is clearly a massive worry for Liverpool, with Alexander-Arnold so vital to the way they play, especially since drifting into more of a midfield role when the Reds have the ball. Nobody else possesses his passing ability and vision, so not having him for an extended period of time could hurt the team badly.

It could force Klopp into a change of system, considering nobody else can play that role from right-back, perhaps leading to Gomez playing there in a more rigid back four, as he has done in the past.

Hopefully, Alexander-Arnold's injury isn't deemed too serious, however, and he is withdrawn from England duty as a precaution, being passed fit for the trip to Wolves in the Premier League on September 16th.

Liverpool have been hampered by injury problems for such a consistent period now, and there is a feeling that they could do with a bit of luck in that area, allowing Klopp the rare opportunity to have his whole squad to call upon.

Read the latest Liverpool transfer news HERE…

Seeing Alexander-Arnold be available for the next game would be a good place to start in that respect, and while the Englishman has made errors this season against Bournemouth and Newcastle United, both of which have led to goals, he is a magnificent footballer who Joe Cole has called "outstanding".

He has such a massive role to play for many years to come, likely becoming the permanent captain once Van Dijk steps down in the future, impressing as the stand-in skipper on Sunday.
