Leeds fans are seriously missing Kemar Roofe

[ad_pod ]

It would be fair to say that the Leeds United fans are seriously missing Kemar Roofe.

The 26-year-old has 14 Championship goals to his name this season, but has now missed Leeds’ last six league fixtures with a knee problem.

In that time, the Whites have recorded four wins, but following Saturday’s 1-0 home defeat to Sheffield United, the club’s fans brought up Roofe.

The forward had actually only managed one goal in his eight league appearances before being injured, but there is no question that the team are missing him.

Patrick Bamford has been in decent form in recent weeks, but the striker is guilty of missing opportunities.

Roofe is reportedly not too far away from being available once again, which will be music to the ears of the Leeds supporters.

Indeed, many have taken to social media to comment on the 5ft 10in ace and a selection of the Twitter reaction can be seen below:

Sheffield Wednesday: Players must shrug off injuries to maintain play-off charge

With Wednesday relentless in their pursuit of the play-offs, and an unbeaten run of 12 league games under their belt, it would appear that the last thing they needed was an enforced week off due to internationals.

But in form midfielder Barry Bannan disagrees, and thinks that it has come at the ideal time for key players to recover from niggling injuries.

He told the Sheffield Star: “Before the game, probably, but we have picked up two more injuries with Hutch [Sam Hutchinson] and Fletch [Steven Fletcher] so it’s a good thing now to get them back and get those that have been carrying injuries back as well for after the international break.”

It was because of Hutchinson’s injury that Bannan moved to the central midfield role early in the Owls’ 4-2 win over Blackburn Rovers on Saturday, which saw the Scot weigh in with three assists.

Speaking about his role in the side, he added: “That’s what I’m here to do — to create goals for the team and try to dominate games and I’m proud of how I’m playing at the minute.

“Obviously I’d like to score goals but the biggest thing for me is probably getting assists and I’m delighted with how it’s gone in the last few weeks.”

Bannan has certainly caught the eye with his rich vein of form lately, something which was not lost on Scotland manager, Alex McLeish, who handed the 29-year-old a call up to the national side.

He was, obviously, delighted with his call up, and was disappointed to be forced to pull out due to a minor knock he picked up at the weekend.

But he insists Wednesday defender, Liam Palmer, will represent Wednesday well in the squad, and hopes that he gets some time on the pitch, something that seems more likely with Liverpool’s Andy Robertson ruled out of the game.

“He’s been brilliant, he deserves his call up and I’m delighted for him, hopefully he can get a game and get his first cap.

“He’s playing left-back, which is a position that is probably new to him and he’s been brilliant. He’s a great lad as well so everyone is really happy that he has got that international recognition.”

Despite Bannan’s obvious disappointment at having to withdraw from the national squad, it can only be a good thing for Wednesday with the player revelling in his pivotal role, and his influential displays being vital to their promotion hopes.

We think it is fantastic for Wednesday that their in form players are receiving international recognition, and the fact that some of their players can benefit from the week off, should be seen as a good thing.

The last thing that Wednesday need before a crucial few weeks, is a spate of  injuries to derail their charge.

Manchester United fans fume despite Solskjaer’s "first" win as boss

[ad_pod ]

Loads of Manchester United fans have been running the rule over their win against Watford, and the reactions aren’t quite what you’d expect.

With Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s permanent arrival being confirmed this week, many would have expected the Red Devils to absolutely trounce Watford at Old Trafford in his “first” game on Saturday, but that was far from the case.

The Hornets will definitely consider themselves unlucky to have left Manchester with no points, having amassed 48 per cent of the possession and a frankly ridiculous 20 shots, with eight of those hitting the target, per BBC’s stats.

To put those numbers in perspective, the hosts mustered just eight shots at Ben Fosters’s goal with five on target.

That was all it took to get the win though, as Marcus Rashford’s coolly taken finish opened the scoring before Anthony Martial doubled the lead in the second half.

Abdoulaye Doucoure gave the visitors a deserved consolation goal late on, and fans are not happy with the performance from Solskjaer’s side.

Tottenham should invest in Benfica’s Jota this summer

It is no secret that Tottenham will be looking to replenish their squad this summer, as well as obviously hoping that their beloved Mauricio Pochettino remains in the hot seat to help complete the clubs aspirations of winning some silverware.

For all the progression made in recent years, Tottenham desperately need some titles to really start altering the idea that they’re not just a side to put on pressure, they want to be considered seriously as winners.

Progress like that can’t happen overnight as Tottenham have found out the hard way but slowly and surely, new signings need to be made with the future in mind.

The only way to improve in football is to spend and Spurs arguably have an inferior squad to the rest of the top six. Besides their starting line-up, Tottenham have little in regards of squad depth but that could all change with the addition of Benfica’s Jota.

A dynamic winger with a wonderful eye for goal at the age of 19 is exactly what you could expect from the highly-rated Portuguese talent and Tottenham could be the club to nurture the wonder-kid.

Having played for just 15 minutes in Liga NOS this season, some may fail to recognise why Jota would demand the substantial price-tag that Tottenham have been linked with paying, (as per the Telegraph) but judging by his performances in the youth sides, that tells Spurs all they need to know.

Indeed, Spurs’ North London rivals Arsenal are also interested in the highly-rated youngster, so signing him would be special as fans would love nothing more than to upset their bitter rivals.

With eight goals and seven assists this season, Jota, (who is valued at £7.2 million on Transfermarkt) seems to be yet another glowing talent emerging through the ranks with the Portuguese giants.

Benfica, though, are renowned for being a selling club and if the price is right, Tottenham may just have bagged themselves the world’s next best wide-player.

Newcastle fans reminisce over superb Hatem Ben Arfa goal

[ad_pod ]

Seven years ago today Hatem Ben Arfa scored one of the great Premier League individual goals in his side’s 2-0 win over Bolton, in a season in which the Magpies finished fifth and played some swashbuckling football.

Ben Arfa was the embodiment of that team, as he produced his most productive season with the Toon Army registering five goals and five assists.

The best of those five though was this sensational effort against the Trotters.

He received a pass from Yohan Cabaye on the halfway line, before turning Sam Ricketts inside out and driving towards goal.

Mark Davies attempted to bring him down but, the mercurial Frenchman breezed past him and then flicked the ball over David Wheater and Tim Ream, followed by calmly rolling the ball into the bottom corner, sending St James’ Park absolutely wild.

This was Ben Arfa at his magical best and has led to Toon fans on Twitter remembering both the good and the bad of the extremely talented former Marseille man.

Liverpool plotting yet another raid for Piotr Zielinski

[ad_pod ]

Liverpool have been linked with Napoli midfielder Piotr Zielinski again, who Jurgen Klopp tried to sign way back in 2016 and was linked with again last year.

What’s the story?

According to reports in Italy, via Sport Witness and CalcioNapoli24, Liverpool are ready to go all in on trying to sign Zielinski this time.

Klopp is clearly a huge fan. The Reds had a bid rejected for the Polish midfielder when he was at Udinese in 2016, per BBC, and he eventually joined Napoli instead, where he has been exceptional.

After links cropped up again last summer, the Italian press are claiming Liverpool are preparing a whopping €60m (£51.8m) offer to secure his services this time.

Is he good enough?

Zielinski was a player with great potential when he took pictures wearing a Liverpool shirt way back in 2016 in the hopes of securing his dream move to Anfield.

Who has the loudest fans in Europe? PSG certainly state their claim in the video below…

He is no longer just “potential” now though, and has blossomed into one of the most technically gifted and intelligent players in Europe.

Known for his ability to weave in and out of tight spaces and find passes between the defensive lines, the 24 year-old has completed 90 per cent of his passes across 30 league showings this season, averaging one dribble and 1.6 key passes per game as well as 1.1 tackles per game (Whoscored).

Having played plenty of times on the left side of midfield this campaign and displaying excellent dribbling, acceleration and vision from midfield, he could be Klopp’s replacement for the creativity that walked out the door with Philippe Coutinho.

Should they pull the trigger?

Quite simply, if Jurgen Klopp thinks Zielinski is a good fit for his style and system, then the Reds should waste no time in making this deal happen.

There were doubts over Andy Robertson. There were doubts of Georginio Wijnaldum. There were even doubts around the price tags of Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah.

The Reds boss has shown time and time again that he and his transfer team are very specific in picking targets who suit their exact specifications, and if Zielinski is the man they see filling the Coutinho-shaped hole in the squad then it feels foolish to suggest otherwise.

Liverpool fans, do you think Zielinski would be a good signing? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below…

Chelsea risk jeopardising club’s future if they rebuff offers for Pedro

Chelsea have a lot of big decisions to make this summer with a transfer ban currently hanging over their heads, while the futures of various players remain uncertain.

And one of those players includes Pedro, who is said to be attracting interest from two Serie A giants.

The Breakdown

The Daily Express reports both AC Milan and Inter Milan are keen on the 31-year-old, though Chelsea could be reluctant to sell due to the sanction handed to them by FIFA.

The Blues, of course, could still end up getting their ban frozen. But even if they cannot, they should still consider selling Pedro in order to give some younger names the chance to impose themselves.

Callum Hudson-Odoi and Christian Pulisic, for example, could easily be Maurizio Sarri’s first-choice wingers next season if Pedro ends up leaving alongside Eden Hazard.

Meanwhile, there is still Willian and other players out on loan and in the youth ranks who could take up cover spots if Sarri is worried about numbers amid the transfer ban.

Perhaps not the most glamorous crop of wide men to some Chelsea supporters, but the Blues have to make something work should Hazard leave and their transfer ban remain in play.

And by moving on Pedro to allow the likes of Hudson-Odoi and Pulisic to get genuine opportunities, they could end up doing just that.

Ultimately, the duo could be the club’s future with their talent, but they will not get the chance to show and prove that until some of the older names in the squad such as Pedro are moved on.

Pochettino loses leverage after Solskjaer’s Man Utd appointment

[ad_pod ]

Mauricio Pochettino has lost his leverage.

After Manchester United appointed Ole Gunnar Solskjaer on a permanent basis on Thursday, there was excitement among the Tottenham Hotspur faithful.

For so long, Spurs fans have had to deal with report after report linking Pochettino away. A December article in The Telegraph, for one, claimed that United had one target to replace Jose Mourinho. His name wasn’t Solskjaer.

Yet a fine run as interim boss has seen the Norwegian appointed. United remain in contention to finish in the top four and face Barcelona in the Champions League quarter-finals after a miraculous win over PSG in Paris.

Real Madrid, too, have long been listed as potential Pochettino suitors but Zinedine Zidane made a dramatic return earlier this month after a dismal season that has seen both Julen Lopetegui and Santiago Solari sacked by Los Blancos.

Within 30 days, Pochettino has seen two jobs disappear and with them, he does not have a leg to stand on when he discusses his summer plans with chairman Daniel Levy.

That is not to say that the Argentine was particularly interested in either job, perhaps he always planned to remain in north London and lead Spurs into a bold new era at their glistening new stadium.

Yet it felt as though he could use the interest to his advantage, playing off the uncertainty both in Manchester and Madrid and leverage himself something of a war chest.

Across the past two transfer windows, Spurs, as has been reported regularly, failed to make a single signing. Lucas Moura, the Brazilian right-winger, is the last player to arrive on a permanent deal. This summer, it has appeared, will be different. Doubts persist over the futures of both Toby Alderweireld and Christian Eriksen, while the likes of Kieran Trippier, Serge Aurier, Ben Davies and Erik Lamela could all be upgraded.

Yet where is the necessity for Levy to back his man now? Short of merely replacing departures, which one would think goes without saying, though Spurs fans might not be so sure, there is no bogeyman in the closet anymore.

Pochettino has nowhere to go. He is not poised to resign any time soon and perhaps the only elite jobs that might become available are at Chelsea and perhaps Juventus and even those links would be tenuous at best.

There is no reason, then, for Levy to go the extra mile and ensure that a superstar arrives at the new stadium. A reunion with Gareth Bale is surely not on the cards; his wages are extortionate and there is little chance of Spurs countenancing a massive transfer fee for a player over the age of 29.

Many reports have claimed that this summer will instead be focused on recruiting young, British players as they look to meet the homegrown quota. The likes of Jack Grealish of Aston Villa and Jarrod Bowen of Hull City have been mentioned as targets but they will do little to excite Spurs fans.

They are both good players but they do not have much Premier League pedigree, much less the experience of playing in, and changing, Champions League games.

Yet Pochettino no longer has the ability to push Levy into changing his thinking. There is no club to flutter his eyelashes at as he bids to squeeze some extra cash out of his chairman. Instead, he will have to accept that what Levy says goes.

Thursday’s news may prove to be excellent for Spurs fans, as they keep the manager who has transformed them into a genuine Premier League force.

But it may also prove to be ultimately frustrating for the man himself, with Levy unlikely to break the habit of a lifetime and throw cash at a team that is so very close to breaking through the Premier League glass ceiling.
