Much of Newcastle United's January transfer window has been centred around potential departures, as they look to balance the books and stay within the Premier League's profit and sustainability rules. However, into the final week of the winter window, the Magpies could turn their attention to a surprising reinforcement.
Newcastle transfer news
So far this month, and more so in the last week, we've seen Miguel Almiron heavily linked with a move to Saudi Arabia side Al-Shabab, Callum Wilson linked with a number of Premier League clubs in a deal worth £18m, and Kieran Trippier linked with a winter switch to Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich.
Yet, as the deadline approaches, none of the aforementioned stars have sealed an exit away from St James' Park. Instead, Eddie Howe could welcome a bargain transfer to reinforce his midfield.
According to Aaron Stokes, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg is a name being discussed behind the scenes at St James' Park by Newcastle. The reporter told The Chronicle: "There's one name that has been bubbling away under the surface and that is Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg."
The Premier League's profit and sustainability rules state that clubs are only allowed to record a loss of £105m in the space of three seasons. Newcastle's loss in that time reportedly stands at £155m. And although investment into the women's team, charity foundation and academy don't count towards the final figure, PIF are certainly walking a fine line.
Given Hojbjerg's struggle for game time under Ange Postecoglou at Tottenham Hotspur, the Dane is certainly in need of a move away this month, and Newcastle could offer him exactly that. It's a deal that could suit the Magpies too, as they look to avoid spending big whilst still welcoming key additions.
"Important" Hojbjerg can provide short-term solution
With summer signing Sandro Tonali still serving his long-term ban for breaching betting rules and Joelinton now sidelined with a long-term injury, Newcastle have been left short on options in midfield. But that's where a player of Hojbjerg's experience can come in. The Denmark international is a player who has played on the biggest stage and one who has earned the praise of Postecoglou, despite falling down the pecking order.
Postecoglou said via The Independent: “I don’t think there was any time during the transfer window where I thought Pierre would move,” Postecoglou insisted. The discussions I had with him were that he was here and wanted to contribute, he wanted to be part of what we were building.
“It is obvious someone that has played regularly would have wanted to play more but ultimately our performances have been strong and he has had to bide his time. He has also been very important in a lot of the games that we’ve won late or had to shore up late. He has been one of the people who has helped us and it is not like he hasn’t contributed at all. He’s been a really important part for us."
Celtic have finished up for the winter shutdown at the top of the Scottish Premiership and Brendan Rodgers is now believed to be keen on bringing a Premier League player north of the border, according to a report.
Celtic head off for winter break…
On Tuesday, Celtic rounded off the first portion of their league campaign by recording a rousing 3-0 victory over St Mirren in Paisley, with goals from Daizen Maeda, Matt O'Riley and Greg Taylor helping to guarantee an eight-point advantage over rivals Rangers heading into the winter break.
In his post-match press conference, former Leicester City and Liverpool boss Rodgers revealed that transfer discussions are already occurring in the background as he eyes new reinforcements, telling BBC Sportsound, via Football Scotland: "There's discussions and work that's going on so hopefully we'll get them in sooner rather than later. When we do, you'll find out."
Celtic eyeing move to sign creative £2m attacker for Rodgers

Rumours are flying off the shelf regarding who could potentially end up joining the Hoops this window and one recent name who has been mentioned in connection with the Scottish giants is Rapid Vienna winger Nicolas Kuhn, who has previously plied his trade at the likes of Ajax and Bayern Munich.
Valued at around £2 million, the 24-year-old has recently been named in Wyscout's top 12 'chance creators' due to his ingenuity in the final third, which could make him a valuable commodity for Celtic as they chase a third successive top-flight crown.
According to a new report, a left-back who has previously played at Parkhead this season could also be on the radar, but competition for his services exists, meaning the Hoops will need to fight for his signature this month.
Celtic keen on Liverpool full-back Owen Beck
According to Dave O'Connell, Celtic are keen on a loan move for Liverpool full-back Owen Beck, who has recently been recalled from a temporary spell at Dundee to help deputise for injured pair Andrew Robertson and Kostas Tsimikas.

The 21-year-old impressed during his time at Dens Park and is also being lined up by the Hoops' arch-rivals Rangers; however, any deal that would see the Welshman depart Anfield once again will be dependent on whether Scotland international Robertson returns from injury during the month of January.
Owen Beck in a press conference.
Labelled "fantastic" by Liverpool Under-21 coach Barry Lewtas, Beck has appeared 20 times in all competitions while in Scotland, registering two goals and two assists in the process (Beck statistics – Transfermarkt).
Celtic could do with another option in the left-back department as speculation continues to swirl surrounding Alexandro Bernabei's potential mid-season departure and Beck has emerged as a familiar face who could fit the bill, albeit his circumstances and interest from the other side of the city may complicate any prospective deal.

Liverpool enjoyed a wonderful 4-1 victory over Chelsea in midweek which kept them top of the Premier League table and could Jurgen Klopp’s final season in charge end with a second league crown?
They face another big test tomorrow afternoon as they travel to the Emirates to play Arsenal. Win and the supporters will believe a 20th league title is destiny for Klopp. Lose, however, and they may just take a big hit in confidence.
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp.
The emphatic win over the Blues will have given the German a boost heading into this title clash against the Gunners tomorrow and with plenty at stake, he will be ready to choose the starting XI which will see the Anfield side secure another win.
With that in mind, here's the team that could take to the pitch at the Emirates on Sunday in what is a pivotal clash if the Reds are to win a second Premier League title under Klopp…
1 GK – Alisson
Alisson Becker.
The Brazilian will retain his place in the starting XI from the midweek victory over Chelsea, and he has missed just two league matches all season.
In the 20 that he has played, Alisson has kept only seven clean sheets, but the Reds have lost just once in those games, and that shows how good their attacking output is.
2 RB – Trent Alexander-Arnold
Liverpool star Trent Alexander-Arnold.
While Conor Bradley enjoyed a stunning performance against the Blues during the week – finishing the game with a goal and two assists – due to the nature of the task at hand against Arsenal, Trent Alexander Arnold will return to the starting XI.
The Englishman has missed only three matches in the league this season, chipping in with five goal contributions, and his presence in the starting XI will be crucial if Liverpool are to win tomorrow.
3 CB – Virgil van Dijk
Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk
The Dutchman has started every single one of his league ties this term, missing only two due to a suspension he picked up following a sending-off against Newcastle United at the start of the campaign.
The former Southampton man will need to be at his best to deal with the likes of Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Jesus tomorrow, and he will be key to Liverpool securing a positive result.
4 CB – Ibrahima Konate
Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konate.
The 24-year-old has been Van Dijk’s main partner at the heart of the defence due to Joel Matip suffering a serious injury against Fulham back in December, with the Cameroonian likely to miss the rest of the season.
Since replacing Matip during that game, the Reds have conceded just five league goals in their subsequent seven games Konate has featured, indicating that he is the ideal person to partner the Dutchman tomorrow.
5 LB – Andy Robertson
predicted-xi-robertson-liverpool
The Scot has missed a large chunk of the season due to suffering a shoulder injury and only made his return against Chelsea in midweek, playing 21 minutes.
He will be deployed in the starting XI against the Gunners and Klopp will be hoping he can keep Saka quiet during the clash.
6 CM – Curtis Jones
conor-gallagher-curtis-jones-tottenham-opinion
The academy product has really taken his game to new levels this season and could become a key member of the Liverpool midfield for years to come.
The 23-year-old has started nine league matches thus far, scoring once and grabbing an assist, and he will retain his place in the starting XI for the visit to London.
7 CM – Alexis Mac Allister
The Argentine was in fine form against Chelsea during the week, finishing the game with a 90% pass success rate, winning 11 ground duels and making one key pass as he shone in the heart of the midfield.
His performances have been getting better and better since adapting to Klopp’s way of playing and his signing is beginning to look like a stroke of genius from the German.
The Hungarian gem was another player who shone against the Stamford Bridge side on Wednesday. Not only did he find the back of the net, but he also made two key passes, succeeded with 91% of his pass attempts and took 68 touches, showcasing his desire to get involved.
The former RB Leipzig starlet has started all but one of Liverpool’s league ties this term and Klopp will place his full trust in the 23-year-old against stern opposition at the Emirates on Sunday.
9 RW – Diogo Jota
Liverpool forward Diogo Jota.
The former Wolves gem has been tasked with performing in a few roles this season by Klopp, featuring on both wings and also as a centre-forward.
The 27-year-old has scored 13 goals and grabbed three assists across all competitions and, due to Mohamed Salah’s injury, the manager will unleash him on the right wing, similar to the midweek clash against Chelsea.
He scored against the Blues, suggesting that no matter what position he plays across the front three, he is able to contribute effectively.
10 ST – Cody Gakpo
Liverpool's James McConnell and Cody Gakpo.
Darwin Núñez is likely to be ruled out for the Arsenal clash after he left in a protective boot following the midweek win over the Blues.
The £140k-per-week striker failed to score despite hitting the woodwork four times, but he did grab an assist and his unpredictability will be missed against the Gunners.
This means Cody Gakpo will earn a start leading the line. The "special" Dutchman – as described by his manager – has managed to net nine goals and chip in with four assists, but facing a stubborn Arsenal defence will be a big test of his abilities.
Manchester United returned to Premier League action by putting in another mixed display at home to Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday evening, with the Red Devils twice being pegged back despite a pair of fabulous finishes from Rasmus Hojlund and Marcus Rashford.
On a day where a typically limp frontline showed signs of life, it was the defensive unit that came under the microscope, having softly conceded from a corner inside the first half, while having also allowed Rodrigo Bentancur to waltz into the penalty area with ease just after the break.
Although the return of Lisandro Martinez has lifted spirits, it remains to be seen who will be his long-term partner at the heart of the defence, with Raphael Varane and Jonny Evans both out of contract this summer, while it wasn't too long ago that Harry Maguire looked set for a summer exit.
With that in mind, it is no surprise that the Old Trafford outfit are looking for a potential upgrade in that position at present…
Man Utd want to sign LaLiga sensation
According to Sky Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg, United have lodged an enquiry to Barcelona regarding the potential signing of Ronald Araujo, in order to ascertain the potential cost of landing the Uruguayan star in 2024.
The report indicates that any deal is likely to cost around €80m (£69m) this month, hence why a summer move is the more likely scenario, with the player himself seemingly keen to stay put at Camp Nou beyond the current window.
If Ten Hag is to get his man at the end of the season, he will also face competition from German giants Bayern Munich, who are said to view the 24-year-old as a "top target"
How Ronaldo Araujo compares to Harry Maguire
Prior to sustaining a cruel injury blow last month, it was Maguire who had cemented himself as the leading presence in Ten Hag's defence, even winning the Premier League's Player of the Month award for November as a marker of his fine resurgence.
Man Utd could repeat Zlatan move by signing "the best no.9 in the world"
The Red Devils have been linked with a swoop for the world-class centre-forward.

As alluded to previously, however, the 30-year-old was believed to be up for grabs over the summer after being stripped of the captaincy, with the United boss viewing his 'sluggish pace' as a key issue in the backline.
Snapping up Araujo, therefore, could prove the final nail in the coffin for Maguire's time in Manchester, with the 6 foot 2 titan arguably "one of the best in the world" in his position, according to Barca boss, Xavi Hernandez.
Barcelona defenderRonald Araujo.
The 16-cap international – who has been hailed as a "Rolls-Royce" by talent scout Jacek Kulig – is particularly impressive with regard to his ability to play out from the back, notably ranking in the top 7% among his European peers for successful take-ons per 90, as well as in the top 13% for progressive passes per 90.
Maguire, meanwhile, ranks in just the top 60% and the top 21% for those same two metrics, respectively, across the last 365 days, proving himself far less adept at carrying the ball forward from deep.
1- Jules Kounde
2 – Levi Colwill
3 – Ben Davies
4 – Niklas Sule
5 – Josko Gvardiol
6 – Mohamed Simakan
7 – Facundo Medina
8 – Nico Schlotterback
9 – Lewis Dunk
10 – Piero Hincapie
That contrast in quality can also be seen by Araujo's defensive prowess, as he has won 64% of his total duels in LaLiga so far this term, as well as winning 58% of his ground duels, while the ex-United skipper has won just 60% of his total duels and only 43% of his ground duels.
With Araujo also a figure who gives off "prime [Virgil] Van Dijk vibes" – according to Kulig – he could prove to be a transformational signing for those at Old Trafford, helping to also offer a more youthful, long-term solution in a largely ageing department.

Fifties from Williams and Burl kept Zimbabwe in the hunt in a chase of 243, but Murtagh picked up wickets at key moments to bowl his side to a narrow victory

Tim Murtagh’s first international five-for helped Ireland to a five-run win over Zimbabwe in the second ODI in Belfast. After Ireland had been made to scrap for their total of 242 for 9, Murtagh, a month shy of his 38th birthday and playing his 57th ODI for Ireland, tore through Zimbabwe’s top order with the new ball, returned to nip out the vital wicket of Sean Williams for 58, and then closed out the game with a nerveless over at the death to finish with 5 for 21. Zimbabwe’s pursuit ended at 237 for 9 despite Ryan Burl keeping them in the hunt with a maiden ODI fifty.Murtagh’s second ball of the game was clubbed to the midwicket fence by Zimbabwe captain Hamilton Masakadza, but the visitors managed just one further boundary off him as the veteran seamer perfectly exploited helpful conditions at the Civil Service Cricket Club ground in Stormont. Before his first over was up, he had exacted his revenge by removing Masakadza’s off bail, but it was in his third over that he really dented Zimbabwe’s chase.Solomon Mire poked at one outside off to be caught behind for 4, and then came the key dismissal of Brendan Taylor, pinned in front of his stumps for a golden duck. Williams survived the hat-trick ball, but from the depths of 14 for 3 it seemed Zimbabwe’s chase had been terminally derailed. But Williams had Craig Ervine, fresh from a century in the last match and in the midst of a rich vein of form, for company. Ervine took the lead in a 56-run stand before he was caught behind for 43 off Shane Getkate’s medium pace, wicketkeeper Lorcan Tucker quick to make amends for an earlier lapse, having dropped a regulation chance in Getkate’s previous over. With the match in the balance, Sikandar Raza tried to seize the initiative with a counter-attacking innings, thumping 15 runs off Getkate in the 21st over to push Zimbabwe’s score beyond 100. But one shot too many meant his effort was to be a cameo rather than a match-turning knock, and when he fell to a catch in the deep for 31, when the required rate was less than five an over, parity was restored.Williams whipped Andy McBrine to the midwicket fence to bring up an unusually patient 76-ball fifty, but as the match wore on a pitch that had worn a greenish tinge all day started to become increasingly two-paced, and it was quickly apparent that Zimbabwe’s chase would not be a straightforward one.Ryan Burl flicks behind square for a single•Peter Della Penna
Murtagh returned, probing with a wicket-to-wicket line as the odd delivery kept low while others kicked off the track, and soon had a pulling Williams well caught by Andy Balbirnie, close in at midwicket. Richmond Mutumbami was undone by a delivery from Getkate that shot through low, kissing the edge, and Zimbabwe were wobbling 160 for 7 with a further 83 needed, and only the tail to keep Burl company. He found an able ally in Donald Tiripano, and together they inched Zimbabwe back into contention. With Tiripano battling cramps, the pair took the requirement down to 15 from 12 before Ireland captain William Porterfield turned back to the talismanic Murtagh to bowl his final over, and the penultimate over of the innings. After three dots and a single, Tiripano played over the top of one to be bowled for 33, giving Murtagh his fifth wicket and snapping a 69-run stand.Zimbabwe needed 14 from the final over, but Mark Adair held his nerve and targeted the blockhole to deny them. Burl reached his fifty, but was run out attempting an unlikely second run off the fifth delivery, leaving Tendai Chatara needing to hit a six just to level the scores. He managed just a single to long-off, and Ireland wrapped up a victory that also gave them an unassailable 2-0 series lead.Murtagh’s wickets helped his team to defend a total that had been built around fifties from Paul Stirling, James McCollum and Tucker. Ireland’s was an innings of two halves: the top order dominated the opening salvo, and Zimbabwe’s frontline seamers struggled to make any inroads despite their captain’s decision to bowl first on a track that had a healthy covering of grass.Eleven boundaries – including three in a row for Stirling off Chatara – flowed in the first Powerplay, and both Irish openers raised their fifties in the same over, the 23rd. But Masakadza then turned to Mire’s rarely-used seamers, heralding a Zimbabwean fightback in the second half of the innings, before Zimbabwe’s spinners put the squeeze on at the death.Mire picked up 4 for 43, while Masakadza deployed Raza and Williams to put the brakes on Ireland’s charge at the death. The two spinners took a combined 4 for 71 from 16 overs to hold Ireland back, but Murtagh’s career-best bowling effort ensured that the hosts’ total was justenough to secure the win, and the series.

Whilst Chelsea have so far endured a rare quiet spell in the transfer window, the Blues have been linked with a number of players and could yet make their move to sign a major reinforcement before the end of the month.
Chelsea transfer news
Routed in mid-table in the Premier League, there's no doubt that Chelsea once again need reinforcements, despite welcoming a number of additions in the summer. Mauricio Pochettino's side just haven't got going this season, with the former Tottenham Hotspur boss failing to make an instant impact at Stamford Bridge. Speaking on the potential for new arrives, Pochettino previously said: "It is not like this. Like you know, too many rumours going around the clubs. It is not what they translate to me. It is not necessary to sell to buy some players.
"I am very positive and happy with the squad. We are working, if something appears, we will announce. At the moment we are assessing and working normally, how we have been working from the beginning of the season."
Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino.
With that said, one name that has been mentioned is Alphonso Davies. According to reports in Spain, Chelsea are ready to make their move for Davies in an attempt to beat Real Madrid to his signature. It's clear that Todd Boehly is once again not messing around when seeking reinforcements and given that the left-back's current Bayern Munich deal expires in 18 months, the Blues could take full advantage.
It may be difficult to convince the Canadian to choose Stamford Bridge over the Santiago Bernabeu, but money, as ever, seems unlikely to be the problem for those in London if they push on and attempt to secure a deal either this month or in the summer transfer window. A standout star, Davies could be one to watch.
"Unbelievable" Davies is better than Chilwell
Ben Chilwell's injury history means that Chelsea are often left without a reliable starting left-back for Pochettino, but Davies wouldn't just solve that problem, he could also be a major upgrade on the former Leicester City man, as Davies' stats this season show.

Davies' most famous game for Bayern Munich is of course the 7-2 thrashing of Barcelona in the Champions League, in which he played a starring role for one particular goal. Praising the left-back for his assist on that night, teammate Joshua Kimmich said:
"That was unbelievable. Even I was a bit ashamed when I celebrated. He gets 99 percent of the credit for the goal. I only had to get the ball over the line."
It's clear that if Chelsea managed to secure a deal to sign Davies, then they could be getting one of the best around in his position. With Real Madrid also interested, it could be a hefty task, but one that the Blues are seemingly ready to pursue.
