Boundary countback rule 'tough to swallow' – Williamson

New Zealand captain says it’s tough to process losing the World Cup in such a fashion after scores were tied at end of each innings and in the Super Overs

Melinda Farrell at Lord's15-Jul-2019Kane Williamson admitted it was “tough to swallow” the fact that the boundary countback eventually decided the World Cup winners. England and New Zealand were equal on runs after both the regulation part of the match and the Super Overs that followed, but England had scored a hit of 26 boundaries to New Zealand’s 17, including the Super Overs. When asked if the system was a fair way to decide a World Cup final, Williamson was typically gracious while admitting the situation was completely unexpected.”I suppose you never thought you would have to ask that question and I never thought I would have to answer it,” Williamson said with a wry smile. “Yeah, while the emotions are raw, it is pretty hard to swallow when two teams have worked really, really hard to get to this moment in time and when sort of two attempts to separate them with a winner and a loser it still doesn’t perhaps sort of shine with one side coming through, you know. It is what it is, really. The rules are there at the start.Watch on Hotstar – The Super Over (India only)”No one probably thought they would have to sort of resort to some of that stuff. But yeah, very tough to swallow. A great game of cricket and all you guys probably enjoyed it.”The rules are there I guess, aren’t they, and certainly something you don’t consider going into the match that maybe if we could have an extra boundary and then tied two attempts at winning it we will get across the line and they didn’t think that either. I don’t even know what the boundary count was but we were slightly behind. Yeah, very, very tough to… yeah, there you go.”Eoin Morgan said England considered the possibility of it coming into force during their chase but were also mindful of the rule before the match.”When we took the field,” Morgan said, when asked at which stage he knew that boundaries would decide the match in the case of a tied Super Over. “I asked what would happen because we sat in a meeting pre-tournament and then when it got close to the chase we started refreshing our minds whether it was going to be a Super Over or not and then communication from [fourth umpire] Aleem Dar up to the changing room before we batted and then reaffirmed when we went out to field.”

  • Wants to sign free agents Sanchez and Karius
  • Are also looking to strengthen in defence
  • WHAT HAPPENED?

After 21 years away from Italy's top-flight football, Como are gearing up for a triumphant return to Serie A. This significant achievement has prompted an aggressive strategy in the transfer market to ensure the team can compete at the highest level. Leading this ambitious project is Fabregas, recently promoted to sole coach after successfully guiding the team to promotion alongside Osian Roberts.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

According to , among the notable names being considered for the offensive lineup is Alexis Sanchez. The 35-year-old Chilean striker is currently a free agent after his contract with Inter expired. Despite limited playing time this season – only 750 minutes across six starts – Sanchez is eager to reignite his career and could be open to a move to Como. At Inter, he earned a net salary of €2.8 million, a figure that exceeds Como's budgetary constraints. For the move to materialise, Sanchez would need to agree to a significant salary reduction. In addition to Sanchez, Como is exploring various other options to strengthen their squad including the likes of Mauro Icardi, Joaquin Correa, Andrea Pinamonti and Andrea Belotti.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

The goalkeeping position is another critical area requiring attention. Current discussions revolve around whether to bring in a primary competitor for Croatian goalkeeper Adrian Semper or to secure a reliable second option. Names like Alessio Cragno from Sassuolo (on loan from Monza) and Loris Karius from Newcastle have been mentioned. Karius, in particular, could be a strategic acquisition as it would allow him to be closer to Milan, where his fiancée, Diletta Leotta, and their daughter, Aria Rose, live.

    WHAT NEXT?

For the midfield, Fabregas and Ludi have set their sights on players with expiring contracts who are looking to revive their careers. Stefano Sensi, also from Inter, and Daniel Boloca from Sassuolo are potential targets. Whereas, in defence, Como are interested in players like Gian Marco Ferrari from Sassuolo and Alberto Dossena from Cagliari.

Fabregas’ vision for Como extends beyond mere survival in Serie A. The former Barcelona and Chelsea star is committed to building a competitive team capable of making a significant impact. His approach involves a blend of experienced veterans like Sanchez and young talents looking for a platform to prove themselves.

Fabrizio Romano says Leeds have made approach for “aggressive” Chris Mepham

As Thursday's transfer deadline approaches, Leeds United manager Daniel Farke is trying to secure a reunion with Ben Godfrey, one of his former players at Norwich City.

Leeds United transfer target Ben Godfrey in action for Everton.

Everton are open to letting Godfrey leave Goodison Park before the end of the window as they look to trim their wage bill, but they have rejected Leeds' first loan offer. 49ers Enterprises are still pushing to get the deal done, and are expected to return with another bid.

In the meantime, though, it's sensible for Leeds to put some feelers out for alternative centre-backs, to ensure they're not left empty-handed if they can't pull off the Godfrey deal. That's where Bournemouth's Chris Mepham comes in.

Leeds unsuccessful with Mepham approach

According to Fabrizio Romano, Leeds have made an approach for Mepham, along with Yorkshire rivals Sheffield United, but both the Championship promotion-chasers and Premier League strugglers have been rebuffed by Andoni Iraola's side.

The Cherries regard him as too important a player to be sold or loaned out at this late stage, and they've told his suitors that he won't be leaving this week.

"Aggressive" Mepham has been hard done by

It sounds like Leeds can forget about signing Mepham, until the summer at the very least, and that's as disappointing as it is surprising. Bournemouth's stance isn't really consistent with the hard facts when it comes to Mepham's lack of involvement this season – as you can see in the table below, he's played almost as many minutes in the domestic cup competitions (225) as he has in the Premier League (265). Indeed, his start in the 4-0 defeat to Liverpool last time out was only his third in the top-flight this season.

Leeds fans may have relished what former manager Scott Parker has called an "aggressive" approach to defending from the Welshman. When compared to fellow centre-backs in similar leagues over the last year, he ranks in the 94th percentile for dribblers challenged per 90 (2.08), demonstrating his eagerness to put a foot in, and the 90th for blocks (1.74), which shows that he's ready to throw his body in the way of the ball. He sits in the 91st for interceptions too (1.82), so he clearly defends on the front foot.

Leeds set sights on signing £30k-p/w Ryan Giles alternative

Leeds United will persist with this potential deal to upgrade their defence away from Ryan Giles.

ByKelan Sarson Jan 30, 2024

Now that Leeds look set to miss out, there's extra pressure on the club to land Godfrey, or indeed a different, plan-c target. It's unclear why exactly Everton were dissatisfied with their proposed terms – they may have wanted the Whites to take on a greater share of the player's salary – but whatever the reasoning, they need to either meet the Toffees' demands or move on at this stage.

Spain Euro 2024 squad: Who has Luis de la Fuente decided to take to Germany?

La Roja are yet again set to blend youth with experience as they aim to win their fourth continental crime this summer

The most recent golden generation of Spanish football has officially passed. With Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba having left the national team set-up for good, the last dregs of one of the greatest international sides of all-time have disappeared.

But that doesn't mean La Roja are without talent. The most-recent Nations League winners reached the semi-finals of Euro 2020 with a side that combined youth with experience, and though Luis Enrique has since moved on, his replacement – Luis de la Fuente – has maintained that philosophy since taking over the reins.

They will face a fight to make it out of their group, however, having been drawn alongside defending European champions Italy and fellow Nations League finalists Croatia, meaning De la Fuente cannot afford any missteps. So, who has the Spain boss decided to take to Germany? GOAL takes a look at La Roja's 26-strong squad below…

GettyGOALKEEPERS

Unai Simon was installed as Spain's starting goalkeeper ahead of the delayed Euro 2020, and has kept the role ever since, though he is now coming under strong pressure from David Raya, whose improved performances for Arsenal could yet earn him the No.1 shirt in Germany.

Meanwhile, Kepa Arrizabalaga and Robert Sanchez have fallen out of favour at club level for Real Madrid and Chelsea, respectively, opening the door for uncapped Real Sociedad 'keeper Alex Remiro to become third-choice.

Despite moving to the Saudi Pro League, Aymeric Laporte remains first-choice at the back for Spain, and looks set to be partnered by Real Sociedad's Robin Le Normand in Germany.

The full-back positions also look settled, with Alejandro Grimaldo likely to be rewarded for his superb season at Bayer Leverkusen with a starting role on the left, while Dani Carvajal will take up his usual role on the right flank.

There's no question who Spain's best player is heading into the Euros, with Rodri remaining the most impressive defensive midfielder in the game right now as he bosses central areas for Pep Guardiola's Manchester City, while also popping up with an occasional important goal.

Pedri who could also offer so much if he can stay healthy. His Barca team-mate Fermin Lopez may also get a look, while Fabian Ruiz could have an important role to play after a series of impressive showings for former Spain boss Luis Enrique at Paris Saint-Germain.

Lamine Yamal has been, quite comfortably, the best young player in Europe this season, but like so many Barcelona starlets, will need to see his game time managed. Still, he figures to be a must-start if fit.

Alvaro Morata will likely have the central role nailed down, meanwhile, but there are questions to answer on the left-hand side of the forward line. Dani Olmo can certainly play out wide, but is at his most effective slightly tucked in. That would seem to open up space for Nico Williams, who has improved immensely for Athletic Club this season.

Ferran Torres will perhaps get a look, too, as he's provided some timely goals for Barca this season, and could be a strong option off the bench. Ayoze Perez was a surprise inclusion following a solid season at Real Betis.

Pat Brown hopes to stave off sophomore syndrome after breakthrough debut season

It happened to Mark Haddon. After his first novel, sold more than two million copies, Haddon was the British author to watch. Remember his follow-up, Me neither. It happened to Michu, the Spanish striker who scored 18 league goals in 2012-13, his debut season for Swansea City; the following campaign brought just two.And it happened to the Kaiser Chiefs, the noughties rock band from Leeds, who followed up their debut album with an effort that Pitchfork described as an “extended dreary hangover from the drunken escapade of the first”.But Pat Brown is determined that it won’t happen to him. After a breakout year in the Vitality Blast last year, in which he came seemingly from nowhere to spearhead Worcestershire’s attack and lead them to a maiden title, the underlying symptoms of sophomore syndrome loom large.Other teams will no longer be taken by surprise. Analysts have prepared footage; coaches have prepared plans. How to deal with Brown is now the first bullet point on the dossier, not a rushed footnote added by hand. Not that any of that fazes him, of course. “At the end of the day if I nail my skills how I did last season and how I can then I’m still going to do alright,” Brown tells ESPNcricinfo. “Obviously I’m prepared maybe not to have as good a year since people are more prepared to face me, but if I stick to focusing on my skills, then I can let them do the talking.”It’s not so much a plan to stop it happening, it’s just a case of looking to keep improving, keep one step ahead of batters. I won’t worry too much about research being done.”After all, Brown’s success was hardly a surprise come the knockouts of a tournament that stretches out over several months. And yet, despite the preparation teams had done to counter his threat, he was the star of Finals Day. He returned 4 for 21 in the semi against Lancashire before Sussex played out his four overs for just 15.”You saw in the final, Sussex didn’t really try to hit me around too much – that was obviously good for my economy. I didn’t take any wickets in the final, but went at under four [an over]. If that happens, I’m just as happy not to take wickets but to try and control the run rate for the team.”Perhaps the most impressive feature of Brown’s season was that all his achievements – most wickets in the tournament, the second-most in an English T20 campaign – came about while he played through a serious injury.

“I got through the tournament okay, and had a scan afterwards on my back,” he recalls. “We were hoping it would rule anything too bad out, so that I could go away if there was the possibility, but it turned out I had a stress fracture. That put my winter on hold really.”And talk of going to franchise leagues was not mere speculation. At least one Big Bash team enquired about Brown’s availability, and he had to withdraw from the Bangladesh Premier League after being picked up in the draft when he realised the extent of his injury. He went unsold in the IPL auction, but was mentioned in dispatches as a possible injury replacement whenever a fast bowler went down. That has meant a strange nine months since the euphoria of Finals Day. He returned to the University of Worcester, securing a 2:1 in business management – “a decent result” – and came back into the first team during the One-Day Cup.”It’s been a bits-and-pieces season,” he says. “There’s been a break since the One-Day Cup, which has been a bit strange. That might pose a bit more of a challenge for some bowlers to get back into bowling those skilful balls – yorkers, slower balls.”Time off, though, has allowed Brown to work on those variations that made him stand out so much last year. His knuckleball, which floats and dips through the air, bamboozled batsmen in the death overs last year, to the extent his economy rate in the last five overs was a parsimonious 7.21, and is his main variation alongside an orthodox offcutter.LISTEN: Talking T20: Daniel Vettori joins the pod to discuss the return of the BlastWhile there has not been any contact from England to date, eight T20 internationals on the tours to New Zealand and South Africa this winter will see Brown come into contention. Not that he is one to think that far ahead, of course – “I just get on with doing what I do for Worcester,” he says. “If I don’t bowl well enough, I won’t be playing, and if I don’t then I’ve got a chance. It’s as simple as that really.”The Blast begins in earnest with a trip to Trent Bridge on Thursday night, but Brown is not daunted. “What’s the worst that can happen? You get whacked around – it’s happened to plenty of people before and will happen to plenty of people again.”Notts haven’t been in the best of form and neither have we in red-ball cricket. It could be a case of both teams letting the shackles off, and trying to get the ball rolling in T20.”Nottinghamshire will welcome Alex Hales back into their side, over two months after his last appearance, while Dan Christian returns as an overseas player and captain. Bowling at those two would be an ominous prospect for some, but Brown relishes the challenge.Brown was the star of Finals Day last season•Getty Images

“It’s a nice test to be up against the big players. It’s not a win-win because you obviously want to beat everyone, it’s obviously really good for you, good for your confidence; if they get hold of you it’s a case of well: it’s widely accepted someone like Glenn Maxwell is a pretty good player – if he whacks me about it won’t do too much harm to my reputation.”Worcestershire’s triumph last year came almost out of nowhere: they were the outsiders going into their first-ever Finals Day, and looked down and out halfway through their innings in both games. But there is a certain pressure on them this year, and Brown thinks that a quarter-final is the bare minimum.”It’s what we’d expect of ourselves,” he says. “A good season would be getting back to Finals Day. Last year we didn’t get given much of a chance, but once you get there anyone can win – anything can happen on the day.”It is easy to get carried away about Brown, and the prospect of him, Jofra Archer and Tom Curran forming a potent seam attack in the T20 World Cup next year is mouthwatering. But all that is a long way off yet: for now, the focus is on nailing his own Difficult Second Album.

Trevor Bayliss questions England 'ruthlessness' against lesser opponents

Coach insists that getting up for the Ashes won’t be a problem despite lackadaisical performance at Lord’s

England’s coach, Trevor Bayliss, has questioned his team’s “ruthlessness” when faced with opponents of lesser stature than the likes of India and Australia, after his side saved face with a 143-run win on the third morning of their inaugural Test against Ireland at Lord’s.Having been bowled out for 85 on the first morning of the match, England turned the tables in dramatic fashion on the third, as Chris Woakes and Stuart Broad rolled aside their opponents in 15.4 overs for 38, the lowest completed Test total since 1932.However, Bayliss was keenly aware that the comprehensive nature of the finish could not disguise the flimsiness of England’s start, nor the enduring weaknesses in a top-three that is no nearer to being settled with the first Test against Australia looming on August 1.”When we got knocked over for 85 on day one, that showed what [Ireland] can do,” Bayliss told Sky Sports. “With a bit more experience they’ll give some teams a hurry up.”With a 180-run lead, we gave ourselves a chance and with the overcast conditions this morning, I think we probably added another 30-40 to the equation. But we had to get off to a good start and those two guys showed the class that we’ve got in these conditions.”I’d like to have seen this approach in the first two days, especially with our batting,” he added. “The intensity that we went into this morning’s play [was excellent], yet for some reason, over a period of time, we’ve struggled against teams that on paper we should do better against.”We’ve got no problem getting up for the game when it’s Australia or India, but it’s matches like that where we’ve got to get a grip of ourselves and see where we can get better.”Bayliss’s assertion is borne out by the team’s recent history, with notable defeats on home soil including a supine loss to Pakistan at Lord’s in the first Test of the 2018 season, as well as West Indies’ thrilling win at Headingley in 2017. But he was keen to add that it wasn’t simply an issue for this current England squad.”It’s been happening for a while, I mean, think about the Netherlands [at the World T20 in 2014] and other matches like that. Do we take the foot off? Are we able to get into the mood to actually go out and compete, and be ruthless?”I think we showed this morning here how ruthless we can be, but we’ve got to get that into our batting as well.”There was a significant mitigating factor for England going into this particular contest, however, given that five of the team were involved in the thrilling World Cup final win on this very ground just over a week ago. Jonny Bairstow, who made a pair, was one player who clearly struggled to raise his game, and Bayliss admitted that he for one would have liked longer to savour the greatest achievement of his career.”I know it’s a Test match that you’re pulling on a shirt for, but to bring yourself back up from that … I certainly think it was a big part to play. There’s no use getting away from it.”Even the first day, it would have been nice for another week, just to celebrate or savour the moment, but no, you’re straight back into preparing for a Test match. That’s what we’ve got in front of us and so that’s what we’ve got to work on and come to terms with.”The Ashes build-up will begin in earnest now that Australia have named their 17-man squad for the five-Test series, and England name their own squad for Edgbaston on Saturday morning. Ben Stokes and Jos Buttler are two automatic picks who were rested for this game, while Jofra Archer could come into the reckoning if he comes through his comeback spell for Sussex Sharks in the Blast this evening.”As I said before, I really don’t think we’ll have any problem getting ourselves up for the Ashes,” said Bayliss. “There’s always a lot of hype around that Ashes series, and we’ve got a few guys to come into the team that have had a rest so we’re looking forward to it.”James Anderson is another contender for the first Test after training with the squad during the Ireland Test, which he missed due to a minor calf tear sustained in county cricket three weeks ago.”Jimmy wasn’t quite right for this one but he’s been out here building up some spells and doing his sprints with no problems at all,” said Bayliss. “So I would be very surprised if he’s not right for the first Test.”

Liverpool could use Caicedo transfer money on “mastermind” Alonso star

Liverpool have reportedly sent scouts to watch an attacking "mastermind" in action under the tutelage of none other than rumoured new manager Xabi Alonso.

Liverpool transfer news

The Reds have been linked with several summer signings in recent days, as they look to freshen up their squad at the end of the season, with a new manager set to be arriving at Anfield.

One exciting rumour that has emerged surrounds Barcelona's 16-year-old sensational Lamine Yamal, who Liverpool are believed to be in pole position to sign in a massive £85m deal this summer. He already has five goals and assists apiece for the La Liga giants.

Barcelona's Yamine Lamal

Leroy Sane is also a player who could be available come the end of the current campaign, with no agreement in place with Bayern Munich over a new deal and the Reds' interest potentially turning his head.

Lloyd Kelly and Antonee Robinson, of Bournemouth and Fulham respectively, are two defenders who have been backed to join Liverpool, too, with the former available on a free transfer in the summer.

Liverpool keeping tabs on Alonso pupil

According to a fresh update from HITC, Liverpool sent scouts to watch Florian Wirtz in action last weekend, as his Bayer Leverkusen side picked up a huge 3-0 win over Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga title race.

Man City transfer target Florian Wirtz in action for Bayer Leverkusen.

"HITC Football understands that, as Leverkusen stormed five points clear at the top of the Bundesliga table with a thumping 3-0 win over the reigning champions, Xabi Alonso is not the only Bay Arena favourite with admirers on the red side of Stanley Park.

"HITC has been informed that scouts working on behalf of Liverpool were also in the stands to keep tabs on a number of players. Florian Wirtz, arguably the most exciting young attacking midfielder in Europe, is liked by Liverpool. As is Piero Hincapie. The talented, left-sided centre-half was a target last summer, as confirmed by his agent."

Wirtz is a player of unbelievable potential, so the idea of Liverpool snapping him up is mouthwatering, especially as he is currently playing under Alonso, who is the front-runner to be Jurgen Klopp's replacement at Anfield. The Spaniard has even compared his player to Lionel Messi, which says so much about his ability:

"Why is Messi so good? Because he knows how and when to play simple passes. Messi says: 'You're in a better position? Here, there you have the ball!' It's not always about making the most brilliant move, but the best and smartest. Florian can do that. That's why he's so good."

At just 20, Wirtz has been one of Leverkusen's star players this season, helping them top the Bundesliga table by five points. He has scored five goals and registered eight assists in the competition, not to mention getting two and four in the Europa League respectively.

Liverpool could unleash Salah in a new role by hiring "unique" manager

This boss would be the perfect Xabi Alonso alternative.

ByAngus Sinclair Feb 12, 2024

Liverpool will have money to spend this summer, with the report mentioning the funds not used on Moises Caicedo last year, and the German ace could be a sensational addition, having been hailed as a "mastermind" by football talent scout Jacek Kulig.

Arsenal star who had 121 touches dropped his best display of the season

In January all of the talk surrounding Arsenal was dominated by their need for a striker. They ended the window without strengthening whatsoever. Where is Ivan Toney? Where is Victor Osimhen? Those were the cries from various parts of the Emirates Stadium.

Well, striker? What striker? Arsenal look like they don't even need one now. The Gunners have banished their attacking demons that encased them at the beginning of the year and have supercharged their season with two mightily impressive wins on the trot.

Beating Liverpool last weekend sent a message about their title chances but their 6-0 romp of West Ham United at the London Stadium on Sunday afternoon was even more remarkable.

This is a side who had beaten Mikel Arteta's side twice already this season, a team who had defeated them at this stadium last term as well, but there were no such issues on this occasion, far from it.

A brace from Bukayo Saka, two set-piece headers from Gabriel and William Saliba, a lovely curling effort from Leandro Trossard and then Declan Rice, back on his old stomping ground, thrashed home a strike from range to ensure their biggest away win in Premier League history.

Declan Rice's performance in numbers

Sunday afternoon was always going to be about a certain Rice. Sold in the summer for a mega £105m fee by the Irons, he was surprisingly booed by the West Ham support in the early stages of the first half.

The best way to respond? Well, claiming two assists and scoring an incredible goal will do pretty nicely.

Was this the midfielder's best performance of the campaign? Perhaps, but he hardly needed to get out of second gear. It was his corner that was met by Saliba to open the scoring and then his dipping free-kick from wide on the left-hand side that Gabriel met to put Arsenal in the ascendency in the first half.

To make matters worse for a London Stadium crowd who had admired their former captain for so long, he then rounded it off with one of the best goals of his career to date. A marker of the man, he refused to celebrate.

Ben White – back to his best at right-back – supplied the goal, pulling the ball back towards Trossard and Martin Odegaard. They both got in each other's way but it didn't matter. Rice ran onto it and fizzed an effort beyond Alphonse Areola to make it six. Sumptuous stuff.

That said, it was arguably that man Odegaard who deserved the Man of the Match award.

Martin Odegaard's performance in numbers

Since Granit Xhaka departed Arsenal over the summer their club captain, Odegaard, has rather struggled.

Why? Well, because he's been the only man really pulling any sort of creative strings from the middle of the park. We know Rice is supposedly the man to stay back but in Kai Havertz he's had an inconsistent figure next to him.

As a result, the Norwegian has had to adapt his play style. After nine league games of the current season, he had registered just two assists and found himself arguably with a lack of space to work with. Combine that with Arsenal's dodgy finishing record and you could hardly blame him for his lack of output.

Thankfully he has improved over recent outings, playing in a deeper role than we are perhaps accustomed to. Playing next to Rice on Sunday, Odegaard delivered his best display of the 2023/24 season yet with a complete midfield performance.

He registered two assists, his first in Arsenal colours in 2024, created two big chances and supplied seven key passes. From their creative magician, this is precisely what the doctor ordered.

No player completed more than the captain's 107 passes at the London Stadium this weekend, while no player had more than his 121 touches. This was total dominance from Odegaard, a man who also won 100% duels throughout the contest.

It was no surprise, therefore, to see analyst and former academy coach Davion Ferguson describe it as the 25-year-old's "most complete performance in an Arsenal shirt."

It is hard to disagree with such a statement. This was a creative masterclass and something Arteta will need again if the north Londoners are to walk away with the title in May.

Sunderland struck gold on "stunning" star who’s doubled in transfer value

Unbeaten in their last three matches now under Michael Beale, Sunderland will hope they can keep this positive sequence of results going to finally start consolidating a playoff spot in the Championship.

Boosted by fellow playoff aspirers Hull City slipping up yesterday, Beale's Black Cats confidently dispatched of Plymouth Argyle in resounding fashion – a flurry of second-half goals seeing the Wearside outfit eventually stroll home to a 3-1 victory, jumping up to sixth spot in the process.

The rejuvenated promotion candidates were in further good spirits owing to a fantastic display from the defence with Daniel Ballard standing out, the ex-Arsenal youth product showing to the Sunderland masses what a shrewd purchase he has been by constantly starring in the second tier.

The signing of Daniel Ballard

Joining for an undisclosed fee back in 2022, with the reported fee coming in at around £2m, Ballard has never looked back since leaving the Emirates Stadium behind for pastures new in Wearside.

Routinely loaned out to the EFL whilst still attempting to make it at Arsenal – with a loan switch to League One Blackpool even seeing Ballard score twice from the heart of defence – the 24-year-old has now found a new home to call his own in Sunderland after leaving his boyhood Gunners behind.

The decision to bring Ballard in has proven to be a fantastic one, with the 6 foot 2 defender now a cemented first-teamer at the Stadium of Light when he's not bandaged up on the sidelines with an injury.

Showing signs of his quality under Tony Mowbray's management, Ballard will hope he can continue being as integral under Beale in the months to come as the Black Cats begin to eye up promotion.

Sunderland could well have to stand strong if other suitors attempt to swoop in and steal the towering number five in the near future though, with the 24-year-old's transfer value skyrocketing off the back of impressing in the Championship.

Daniel Ballard's transfer value in 2024

There will be an obvious temptation from the powers that be at Sunderland that they could cash in on Ballard and make a healthy profit however, with the imposing defender's transfer value now standing at €5.3m (£4.5m), as per Football Transfers.

Yet, if Sunderland want to continue being successful and reaching new heights, they will have to keep a strong grip on their excellent centre-back.

This season, Ballard has showcased his knack for scoring goals that he displayed out on loan with his permanent employers – netting three goals from 31 appearances.

Ballard also shines when it comes to doing his defensive basics well, winning 5.6 duels on average this season per 90 minutes on top of being able to confidently play out from the back with a 90% pass accuracy average.

The 24-year-old's doggedness and calmness shone in the Pilgrims win on Saturday, winning 100% of his aerial duels whilst also amassing 82 touches as a smooth operator in the back four.

Described as "stunning" by football journalist Josh Bunting earlier in the campaign, Ballard will continue to be crucial for Beale and Co as the games become even tenser towards the tail-end of the season.

With the likes of Jack Clarke and Pierre Ekwah touted for big moves away in the transfer window, Sunderland will keep everything crossed that clubs don't suddenly attempt to swarm Wearside to try and tempt their £15k-per-week star away soon.
