Russell Domingo first to be interviewed but Mike Hesson being seen as a frontrunner
Mohammad Isam in Dhaka08-Aug-2019The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has cranked up its search for the senior team coach, with the side’s next assignment – a one-off Test against Afghanistan – less than a month away. The board’s shortlist included Mike Hesson, Grant Flower, Paul Farbrace, Russell Domingo and Chandika Hathurusingha, after Andy Flower declined the board’s offer a second time. The BCB may be in a race with other subcontinent boards, with India, Pakistan and Afghanistan also looking for a head coach, and ongoing issues between Hathurusingha and Sri Lanka Cricket.Farbrace, it is understood, is out of the running after he declined the BCB’s offer to take things further.* It is the second time the former England assistant coach has done so; he was among those being discussed for the role even though he had declined the board’s offer in March last year. The BCB eventually appointed Steve Rhodes then, with whom it parted ways immediately after the World Cup.ESPNcricinfo has learned that Hesson, the former New Zealand coach, is a frontrunner, with BCB president Nazmul Hassan and some directors expressing interest. However, Domingo, who coached South Africa from 2013 to 2016, was the first coach to be interviewed as the board began its process in Dhaka on Thursday. Grant Flower, who was Pakistan’s batting coach, and Hathurusingha remain on the periphery of the board’s interest.Hathurusingha, who coached Bangladesh from 2014 to 2017, is known to be a favourite of the BCB president and a few directors, even though he quit to take up the Sri Lanka job in October 2017. However, ESPNcricinfo understands that Hathurusingha’s ongoing struggle with Sri Lanka Cricket, which resulted in his suspension this week, has resulted in a difference of opinion between the Bangladesh board directors over his prospects. Still, the BCB will reportedly conduct a telephone interview with Hathurusingha, which doesn’t rule him out of contention. The, BCB, meanwhile, was impressed with Domingo’s presentation during the interview.”We have started working with our shortlisted coaches,” the BCB’s media committee chairman, Jalal Yunus, said. “We have just conducted an interview with Russell Domingo, the former South Africa coach. He is a real professional. He is well qualified. He gave us a presentation about what he thinks about Bangladesh cricket. It was satisfying for the BCB.”We will interview the rest of the coaches on our shortlist. We have two more to interview in the next few days, and then we will choose between these coaches.”*
Erik ten Hag's focus this week will be on Manchester United's FA Cup tie away to Newport County on Sunday.
Last time out, the Red Devils were held to a 2-2 draw at home to Spurs, in a game that showed promise yet also frustration.
However, in the background, his recruitment staff will be identifying potential targets to make a late move this winter, with a striker being the position of focus.
Man Utd's striker search
According to football journalist Graeme Bailey, Man United are monitoring Benjamin Sesko.
It's stated that United's scouting team was at RB Leipzig's clash with Bayer Leverkusen at the weekend with Sesko one of the players on their radar ahead of a prospective move.

Reports from Germany suggest that the Slovenian can be bought for £43m in the summer due to a release clause in his contract.
Therefore, a move this January is highly unlikely, with a more short-term deal on the agenda at Old Trafford.

The stats that show Benjamin Sesko would thrive at Man Utd
It doesn't seem like two minutes ago that Anthony Martial glided through the Liverpool defence to score on his debut back in 2015, and at that moment, the French wonderkid looked destined to become a United great.
However, his career has been completely tarnished by injuries, which have prevented him from developing into the player he once promised. This season in the Premier League, the former Monaco man has played 13 matches with an average of 35 minutes per game.
With the 28-year-old out of contract in the summer, Ten Hag may look to cash in on the attacker this month in order to partially fund the move for Sesko in the summer.
Nonetheless, let's take a look at the young prospect who has been nicknamed the "Slovenian Erling Haaland" by Football Talent Scout Jacek Kulig, by showing his stats from the last year across the top European leagues.

As you can see, Sesko is the definition of a pure striker who only has one thought on his mind: scoring goals.
Combine that with his height and lightning speed, and it is no wonder he's been compared to Haaland by many in the game.
Crucially, just like last season's Premier League top scorer, Sesko is a clinical finisher who has an incredible goals/shot ratio per game, which is the exact same as Haaland's, which proves he has the potential to become elite.
Furthermore, the duo, who both made their name at RB Salzburg, aren't the most technical players who like to be heavily involved in the build-up, with the City star ranking in the bottom 5% of strikers in Europe for passes completed. That said, they thrive in the penalty area where they can use their power, athleticism, and goal-scoring instincts to full advantage.
Overall, the duo are similar in their style, attributes and pathway to the top of the game, and Man United could be making an extremely smart move by selling Martial to secure the 20-year-old who will become a "future icon" as per scout Jacek Kulig.
Wrexham star James McClean says Declan Rice needs to do more as a "£100 million player", as England limped to a 1-1 draw with Denmark.

England draw 1-1 with DenmarkRice puts in lacklustre displayCriticised by Wrexham's McCleanWHAT HAPPENED?
The Three Lions came away with a point from their clash with the Danes on Thursday to inch closer to the last 16 of the Euros, but were wholly unconvincing with their performance. During the interval, former Republic of Ireland winger McClean said the 25-year-old, who cost Arsenal £105 million ($133m) last summer, needs to do more than just "sideways and backwards passes".
AdvertisementWHAT JAMES MCCLEAN SAID
He said on RTE Sport: "Denmark has won the midfield battle in that half. I made a comment yesterday (Wednesday) about Declan Rice, which people have got their knickers in a twist about, but for a £100 million player I want to see more than five-yard sideways and backwards passes. He attempted one forward pass in the half and it went straight into the keeper's hands. I want to see him do more, break lines, but in the midfield battle in the first half, Denmark won that very comfortably."
THE BIGGER PICTURE
This comes a day after the former West Brom man said the ex-West Ham midfielder was "overrated" and not a world-class player. While this criticism may stick in Rice's craw, the manner of the performance against Denmark will be a cause for concern. However, England are still top of the group and in pole position to reach the knockout stages of the competition.

Selecao preparing for major tournament
National hero is backing their cause
Has highlighted harsh words of others
WHAT HAPPENED?
The Selecao and Barcelona legend stunned the footballing world when posting a social media message that read: “That's it folks, I've had enough. This is a sad moment for those who love Brazilian soccer. It's getting hard to find the spirit to watch the games. This is perhaps one of the worst teams in recent years, it has no respectable leaders, only average players for the majority. I've been following football since I was a kid, long before I thought about becoming a player, and I've never seen a situation as bad as this. Lack of love for the shirt, lack of grit and the most important of all: football. I'll repeat, our performance has been one of the worst things I've ever seen. Such a shame. I therefore declare my resignation. I will not watch any CONMEBOL Copa America game, nor celebrate any victory.”

THE BIGGER PICTURE
Brazil’s Copa America class of 2024, who are readying themselves for another major tournament, were among those to be left shocked by the apparent tirade, with current Barca forward Raphinha saying: “I was surprised and I don't agree with his statement.”
WHAT RONALDINHO SAID
Ronaldinho has, however, revealed on his personal Instagram account that he was merely highlighting the harsh words of fellow countrymen. He has said: “I would never abandon Brazilian football, ever. And I'd never say those things you see… Actually, these words came from real Brazilian fans, they are real comments that I saw on the internet. Imagine listening to these messages before you play? Nope, motivation goes down…fan support makes a huge difference to the player. I know what I'm talking about. Guys what our boys need is support at this time. The more confidence we show, the more confidence they will have on the field. That's why I joined Rexona in this movement to encourage the Cheer That Doesn't Quit. We are asking everyone to send message of support and confidence in CONMEBOL Copa America. Let's all give magical support of the Brazilian fan.”

Spurs and Postecoglou will be alert to the possibility of adding to his squad further before the February 1st deadline, amid reports Spurs want to sign a new central midfielder.
"In terms of the rest of the transfer window, I was really pleased that the initial objectives we had in our head, which were someone in at centre-half and someone in the forward positions, that we ticked those off pretty early," said Postecoglou on the final days of the window.
"And it’s not just been that we did them early, but they’re two guys who have really benefitted from having 10 days in the building with us, training, adjusting and all that. Both Timo and Radu are both in a really good place to help us going forward. As for what happens with the rest of it going forward, as I said last time, we’re always alert and doing work and if we can improve the squad we’ll look to do that. And if there are potentially any outgoings, we’re ready for that depending on what happens."

India are gearing up to announce their next head coach. Former captain Kapil Dev and his Cricket Advisory Committee made up of former coach Anshuman Gaekwad and former women’s captain Shanta Rangaswamy are conducting meetings with the candidates and are expected to make a final call on Friday evening. ESPNcricinfo understands that the shortlist shrunk from six candidates to five on Friday, with Phil Simmons pulling out of the race.Of the candidates appearing in front of the CAC, Shastri, who is in the West Indies with the India squad, was the last to take his interview. Here’s a quick look at everyone still in the running.Ravi ShastriThe incumbent and the favourite. Shastri has been on the job since the end of the Champions Trophy in 2017 and received strong and public endorsement three weeks ago when India’s captain Virat Kohli backed him to keep the job. India were ranked No. 1 in Tests and ODIs at various times during Shastri’s last tenure, made it to the World Cup semi-final and beat Australia in Australia for the first time in Test history.Mike HessonThe strategist. You might have noticed him on cricket broadcasts explaining how teams could go about getting players like Kane Williamson out. Well, imagine that info going directly to the Indian dressing room. Hesson coached New Zealand to the World Cup final in 2015 and is widely considered to be quite astute at reading conditions and helping his players adapt to them. New Zealand showed that during the World T20 in 2016 when they went into their opening game on a rank turner without their two best bowlers Trent Boult and Tim Southee and bowled India out for 79.Tom MoodyThe franchise heavyweight. Moody’s been everywhere. He led Sunrisers Hyderabad to their first IPL title in 2016. He’s been with Rangpur Riders in Bangladesh, Multan Sultans in Pakistan, Melbourne Renegades in Australia (as director of cricket) and has been sought after in international cricket as well. He was coach of Sri Lanka for a while and was in line to take charge of England before losing out to Trevor Bayliss.Robin SinghFour-time IPL champion. He’s been with Mumbai Indians for nearly a decade and that trophy cabinet keeps getting bigger. Robin has also worked with the Indian team previously – he was the fielding coach when they won the inaugural World T20 in 2007. Outside of that he’s had stints with India’s Under-19 and A teams, the Hong Kong national team, USA’s women’s team, CPL side Barbados Tridents and domestic teams in Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.Lalchand RajputThe outsider. But, he was India’s manager when they went on that fairytale run in the 2007 World T20 followed by the tri-series win in Australia. Celtic needed two late goals in stoppage time to secure a 3-1 win over Motherwell at Fir Park in the Scottish Premiership on Sunday afternoon.
Brendan Rodgers brought Norwich City loanee Adam Idah on for Kyogo Furuhashi at half-time and the Ireland international scored twice put the Hoops in front, having been 1-0 down.
The 23-year-old marksman has already scored four goals in four league appearances for the club, and appears to be on course to become one of the manager's best signings of the season.
Norwich forward Adam Idah.
Most of the boss' key players – including Matt O'Riley, Alistair Johnston, Cameron Carter-Vickers, and Kyogo Furuhashi – were brought to the club by his predecessor, Ange Postecoglou.
The Australian tactician rarely missed in the transfer market with some fantastic signings in his two years at the club, with O'Riley, Kyogo, and Jota among the most impressive moves.
However, Postecoglou did not always get it right and Argentine left-back Alexandro Bernabei is one example of that, as the flop has endured a tough time in Glasgow and is worse than current first-choice Greg Taylor.
How much Celtic paid for Alexandro Bernabei
The Scottish giants swooped to sign the defender from Lanus, in his home country, for a fee within the region of £3.75m in the summer of 2022.
Upon signing for the Hoops, Bernabei revealed that the manager had faith in him and his ability to adapt to life in Scotland quickly to make an impact on the pitch.
It was a significant fee to pay for a young left-back, particularly when you consider that the club paid £3m to sign Taylor from Kilmarnock back in 2019, who had yet to reach 100 first-team appearances.
The Argentina U23 international had played 88 senior games for Lanus prior to Celtic deciding that they wanted to bring him over to the Premiership.
He had established himself as a regular starter for his former club in the Liga Profesional during the 2021 campaign, though, with 23 league starts that year.

As you can see in the table above, there were some warning signs for Celtic in his performances in his home country as opposition players found it a little bit too easy to get the better of him at times.
He was dribbled past 1.4 times per game and lost more than half of his physical duels across those 24 league outings throughout the 2021 season.
These statistics did not suggest that Bernabei was set to make a huge impact at the top end of the pitch as an attacking left-back, with a lack of goals and assists, or that he would be able to deal with the physicality of Scottish football.
Of course, the young full-back was signed at the age of 21 and Postecoglou may have viewed him as a long-term signing who could develop his game in and out of possession.
Alexandro Bernabei's Celtic career in numbers
It has not gone to plan for the now-23-year-old defender, though, as he has struggled badly in the Premiership and failed to establish himself as a regular option for either of his managers.
Postecoglou handed him 15 appearances and nine starts in the Scottish top-flight during the 2022/23 campaign as Taylor retained his place as the first-choice at left-back.
The Argentine dynamo did provide an attacking threat down the left flank with one goal and three assists in those nine league outings, which is a return of one assist every three starts on average.
Celtic defender Alexandro Bernabei.
However, Bernabei struggled out of possession as he failed to step up to the level of physicality required of a left-back in the Scottish league.
The 23-year-old dud lost 60% of his duels, including 63% of his battles on the deck, in his 15 Premiership appearances, which shows that opposition players found it far too easy to get the better of him.
He was also dribbled past 14 times and gave away a penalty in those nine starts as the young flop failed to provide a solid defensive presence at the back for Postecoglou.

As you can see in the table above, Bernabei has also struggled to find his top form under Rodgers in the Premiership so far during the 2023/24 campaign.
The Argentine defender, who was recently criticised for his "weak" defensive work by ex-Hoops full-back Mark Wilson, has not offered much in an attacking sense and has still been poor off the ball as the opposition have got the better of him too easily.
Put simply, Postecoglou endured a rare transfer howler by signing him as he cost more than £750k more than Taylor, yet is worse than the Scotland international.
Greg Taylor's season in numbers
The former Kilmarnock star has been the first-choice option for Rodgers in the number three position and been an excellent performer for the Hoops.
Celtic defender Greg Taylor.
Only Luis Palma (12) has created more 'big chances' for their teammates than Taylor (eight) in the Premiership so far this season, which highlights the impressive work the Scottish ace has done at the top end of the pitch.
The 26-year-old whiz, who has scored two goals, has produced 1.9 key passes per game and produced the assist for Idah's equaliser against Motherwell on Sunday with an excellent left-footed cross.
Defensively, Taylor has only been dribbled past 19 times in 24 league starts, which is less than once per start on average. Whereas, Bernabei has been dribbled past 19 times in 12 starts since the start of last season in the top-flight.
He has also won 54% of his duels on the ground in the Premiership this term, which shows that the current first-choice left-back can hold his own on the deck and deal with the physicality of the division.
Therefore, Taylor is a better option for Rodgers than Bernabei as opponents find it harder to dribble past him, win a lower percentage of their duels against him, and the Scottish gem has the quality to offer more in possession.
Therefore, Postecoglou had a howler with the signing of the Argentine dud as he cost more than the Scotland international, despite currently being worse than the ex-Killie ace.
