Stephen Fleming confirmed as Nottingham-based Hundred coach

Stephen Fleming has become the latest high-profile overseas coach to be appointed for next year’s inaugural season of The Hundred, after it was confirmed that he will serve as the head coach for the Nottingham-based men’s team.Fleming, the former New Zealand captain, is the most successful coach in the history of the Indian Premier League, winning three titles with Chennai Super Kings. He was also Nottinghamshire captain for three seasons in the mid-2000s, winning the County Championship title in 2005.The Hundred’s reliance on overseas coaches was criticised recently by Andrew Strauss, the former director of England cricket, who described it as a “missed opportunity” to promote home-grown talent. The confirmed names so far include several Australians in Shane Warne, Simon Katich and Andrew McDonald, as well as the South African Gary Kirsten, and Sri Lanka’s Mahela Jayawardene.Fleming will be joined at Trent Bridge by Salliann Briggs, the coach of Loughborough Lightning from 2016 to 2018, who will head up the women’s squad. Briggs led her team to the Kia Super League Finals Day for the first time in 2016, and is currently coach of the Hobart Hurricanes in the Women’s Big Bash League in Australia.”I am looking forward to returning to Nottingham,” said Fleming. “It was a special part of my career and it allowed me to fall back in love with the game. My memories with Nottingham and Trent Bridge are outstanding.”The draft for the Hundred takes place on October 20, and Fleming said he would be leaning on the local knowledge of his assistants – as-yet unconfirmed – to ensure the Nottingham team makes astute picks.”I’m really looking forward to working with some of the talented local coaches,” Fleming said. “You really have to be on your game from the first pick in The Draft and make sure you get players that represent what you stand for and how you want to play. Having local coaches is a massive part of that – working with our three counties – to tap into their knowledge of the players.”Sanjay Patel, Managing Director of The Hundred said: “Stephen is the most successful coach in IPL history and Salliann has made a real impact at the Loughborough Lightning over the past few years. It is great to have their knowledge and expertise as part of the first year of The Hundred.””It’s a great opportunity and I’m really looking forward to getting started and building the team,” added Briggs. “When The Hundred was first announced I was struck by how it was different from the IPL and the Big Bash and I thought it was a great idea to create something different from those tournaments, rather than attempt to compete with them.”Since then you look at the coaches who are getting involved – and it looks as if the best players want to be involved as well – and it just feels like we’re set to be involved in a really good competition.”

Xabi Alonso: Net worth, salary, age, wife, number, Liverpool manager & more

Xabi Alonso is a name that many fans are starting to hear more and more nowadays, as his Bayer Leverkusen side continue to defy expectations over in Germany, having gone unbeaten in the Bundesliga after 20 games.

And with the recent news of Jürgen Klopp announcing his departure from Liverpool at the end of the current campaign, a lot of rumours have started to circulate involving the former Reds midfielder.

Football FanCast has decided to take a deeper dive into his accomplishments, personal life and what made him the man he is today.

Who is Xabi Alonso?

Xabier Alonso Olano is a Spanish football coach and former professional player who is currently the head coach of Bundesliga club Bayer Leverkusen.

Alonso was born on 25th November 1981 in Tolosa, Spain, making him 42 years of age.

He made a name for himself as a midfield enforcer, mainly in his time at Liverpool and Real Madrid. He ended his career with 18 trophies to his name, which included one World Cup, two Champions Leagues, two European Championships, three German and one Spanish league titles, two UEFA Super Cups, one German Cup winners' medal, one FA Cup, two Copas del Rey, one Spanish Super Cup, one German Super Cup and a Community Shield.

Xabi Alonso's salary at Bayer Leverkusen

Bayer Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso.

When Xabi Alonso extended his contract with Bayer Leverkusen until August 2026, he is thought to have received a huge pay rise. According to German outlet Bild, the former Spain international now earns up to €6m (£5.12m) a year.

Just to put this into perspective, he would be the sixth-highest-paid manager in the Premier League.

Xabi Alonso's net worth

Of course, no one can put an exact number on Xabi Alonso's net worth apart from the man himself. However, Celebrity Net Worth claims that the Bayer Leverkusen boss is worth around $20m (£15.9m).

The majority of his money will have been earned during his trophy-laden playing career, with clubs like Bayern Munich, Liverpool and Real Madrid no doubt paying a high premium in terms of his wages. If you add his current managerial wages as well as any investments and side projects he may have, then you could say his net worth may even be more than that figure above.

Xabi Alonso's wife

The Spaniard is married to Nagore Aranburu.

There's a bit of a romance story involving the pair as they met all the way back during Alonso's youth days at Real Sociedad.

Nagore has had a number of jobs, working as a model, actor, fashion designer, and as many Liverpool fans will remember, a receptionist.

There is a rather comical story of when she worked as a hotel receptionist in Liverpool, where Peter Crouch later admitted he had fallen in love with her. Little did he know that it was Alonso's wife, which was later relayed to him by Jamie Carragher.

Xabi Alonso's squad number at Liverpool

Xabi Alonso famously wore the number 14 shirt throughout his time at Liverpool, and it's safe to say it served him well.

In terms of other clubs, it varied, but he has a clear favourite.

Xabi Alonso to Liverpool rumours

If the bookies are anything to go by, Alonso looks like the man to take the reins from Jürgen Klopp, as he's currently priced at 1/2 at Sky Bet to land the Anfield job this summer.

And the current noise around Liverpool is that the Spaniard has been pushed forward as a strong candidate to replace the German, which isn't really a surprise given how well Bayer Leverkusen are doing this season and his obvious links to Merseyside.

Xabi Alonso's retirement

Xabi Alonso announced his retirement on his social media back in March 2017 at the age of 35, with an iconic post that stated; 'Lived it. Loved it. Farewell, beautiful game.'

The 375,000 likes that the post received shows just how appreciated he was and how much he did for the game.

Xabi Alonso's stats as a player

Xabi Alonso made a whopping 695 appearances throughout this career, which spanned across five professional clubs. He managed to accumulate 43 goals and 69 assists across his career.

The three most notable teams were Liverpool, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich, but he did also play for Real Sociedad and Eibar.

Xabi Alonso's Bayer Leverkusen managerial record

Xabi Alonso has set things alight this season at Bayer Leverkusen. The German club are currently 30 games unbeaten in all competitions and are sitting pretty at the top of the Bundesliga table.

The Spaniard has been in charge of 67 games in Leverkusen, losing just 10 times, drawing 14 and winning 43, which gives him a points-per-match total of 2.13.

Xabi Alonso's formation and tactics at Bayer Leverkusen

Bayer Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso.

Xabi Alonso's favourite formation is 3-4-2-1, which has brought him huge success in Germany this term.

Everyone knows their roles. The centre of the pitch is packed with bodies, leaving room for the pacey wide-men to advance. Goals can come from anywhere in Alonso's sides, with his wing-backs and two more attacking midfielders playing huge roles.

The wide-men play high when in possession, but when the ball is lost, they pull back to around the halfway line.

One key to any Alonso side is having potent finishers throughout the side, which has been evident as Victor Boniface, Patrik Schick, Amine Adli, Nathan Tella, Jonas Hofmann, Florian Wirtz, Adam Hlozek, Jonathan Tah, Alejandro Grimaldo and Jeremie Frimpong have all contributed to a combined 76 goals so far this season, and we're only 30 games in.

Ten Hag must ditch Man Utd’s 2/10 dud who made 2 passes vs Wolves

Manchester United moved up to seventh in the Premier League after picking up an important three points on the road to Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The thrilling encounter saw missed chances and plenty of last-gasp action as the game ended 4-3, the perfect viewing for the neutral but a nail-biting affair for those involved.

Erik ten Hag will be pleased with his side on the whole, and that result could be the first step towards a much-needed run of good form.

How the game vs Wolves played out

Marcus Rashford has had his critics for his off-field actions this week, but he silenced those within five minutes thanks to a brilliant strike. United came out of the tunnel with a point to prove, and by the 22nd minute, they had their second through Rasmus Hojlund, who picked up the Player of the Match award.

Ten Hag's side had two more goals ruled out for offside before the break, and the visitors racked up eight attempts at goal, 1.38 xG, and just 0.16 xGC in what was arguably their best half of the season.

United looked set to cruise to a victory, but a rather controversial penalty was given to Wolves with 20 minutes to go, which caused the Red Devils to go into the usual panic mode we've witnessed all season. Scott McTominay eased those worries four minutes later, however, scoring from a corner.

Fast forward to the 95th minute, and Pedro Neto had put the ball in the back of the net to make it 3-3 after United lost the ball from their own corner. Luckily, 18-year-old Kobbie Mainoo was on hand to glide through the Wanderers' defence and curl home with minutes to go.

Andre Onana and Antony vs Wolves

Andre Onana didn't do a whole lot wrong on the night, and for the first time this season, United looked comfortable when playing out from the back. However, the Cameroon star also had a few moments of chaos, which could have cost his side on another day.

Andre Onana

For example, the goalkeeper attempted to claim a cross but missed the flight of the ball, which ultimately led to Lisandro Martinez clearing the ball off the line. His goals prevented was -0.40, which probably comes from his lack of bravery for the second goal and being beaten quite easily at his near post for the third.

Nonetheless, the table below shows a handful of Antony's stats during his short cameo, which left a lot to be desired, earned him a 2/10 rating by the Manchester Evening News, and made journalist Samuel Luckhurst call him a "liability."

The Brazilian got his first goal and assist of the season against Newport County at the weekend, but he failed to build on that when he came on for 17 minutes. When the side is under pressure, players need to attempt to manage the game and not allow the opposition chances to attack.

However, the former Ajax man was extremely wasteful, and his ball retention was horrific, as shown by his 50% pass accuracy, two passes all game, possession lost six times, and his 25% dribble success rate. The 23-year-old also lost four of his seven duels, with one of them leading to the overturn in possession for Wolves' equaliser.

It was most certainly an evening to forget for the £86m enigma, with Ten Hag needing to consider whether it is wise to even bring him off the bench at the weekend, let alone handing him a start.

Sullivan needs to up offer to sign West Ham target available for "millions"

As things go from bad to worse for West Ham since the closure of the winter transfer window, attention has already turned to the summer as David Sullivan prepares to put in a fresh bid for a January target.

West Ham's disastrous January window

Without a win so far in 2024, the atmosphere at the London Stadium has turned toxic in recent weeks. Many Hammers' fans are struggling to see how things will get better after the East London outfit have shipped eleven goals in their last three Premier League outings and haven't scored during this time.

West Ham eyeing deal to sign new gem ahead of Crystal Palace

The Hammers could get one over on their Premier League rivals.

ByTom Cunningham Feb 25, 2024

Part of the issue for West Ham has been the complete failure of their January transfer strategy. Kalvin Phillips' move to the capital had many fans envisioning the midfielder's breakout season at Leeds however, it has been nothing like that. A clumsy error saw him responsible for dropped points on his debut before two careless yellow cards saw the 28-year-old prematurely dismissed in his most recent game for his new side.

Only on loan until the end of the season, early conversations around making Phillips' deal permanent have been quickly shot down. With much of the Declan Rice money still in the kitty it is likely that the Hammers will return to the transfer market to reinforce his team.

As the summer window draws nearer, one of West Ham's January targets remains in the shop window, but Sullivan will have to up his offer to get the deal over the line.

West Ham need to up offer for midfield target

As translated by Sport Witness, an Italian outlet is now detailing that Valentin Carboni will once again be on the market this summer. The Argentinian is contracted to Inter Milan but has caught the attention of clubs while on loan at AC Monza this season.

It is suggested that Inter are yet to decide what the future holds for the 18-year-old however, one option stated by the outlet is to "sell him for millions… in order to replenish their coffers".

Valenti Carboni in action for AC Monza in Serie A

An alleged bid of £14million was put in by West Ham in January but it is clear that the Hammers would have to up their offer to secure the services of the teenager. With two goals and two assists in just seven starts for Monza, there is no wonder why the English club are keeping tabs on Carboni.

An attacking midfielder by trade, Carboni has excelled in Italy as a creative midfielder with a keen eye for a pass. Where the 18-year-old differs from many of the midfielders at currently West Ham's disposal is his ability to carry the ball and dribble past his man. This means that he would likely fit the mould of a Lucas Paqueta rather than some of the more defensive-minded signings made since Rice left.

Still a teenager, it is unlikely that Carboni would walk straight into the first team, but his potential arrival should still be a cause for excitement among West Ham fans.

'Pakistan not exploring neutral venue' – Ehsan Mani confident of hosting Sri Lanka

The tour had suffered a blow after Sri Lanka’s government said they received news of a “possible terrorist threat on the Sri Lanka team”

Umar Farooq in Lahore13-Sep-2019PCB chairman Ehsan Mani reiterated his confidence in Pakistan hosting Sri Lanka later this month, saying neither he nor his board was looking to shift the series to a neutral venue.According to the original schedule, both teams will be playing three T20Is and three ODIs in Lahore and Karachi between September 27 and October 9. But doubts over those matches actually taking place surfaced earlier this week when the Sri Lankan government received news of a “possible terrorist threat on the Sri Lanka team”. This development came two days after SLC named their touring squads without ten frontline players who refused to travel.Mani, addressing the press in Lahore on Friday, said the PCB was in discussion with the SLC and that he expected the tour to continue as planned. “Our decision is very clear and we are not exploring any other neutral venue. We don’t have the time to shift or lookout for any other option right now. Our default position is that it is Pakistan’s home series and it will be played in the country. This has been the understanding right from the start and we are in discussions with the Sri Lanka board and they are also very positive about sending their team.”SLC had committed to the tour after a thorough security assessment, but with less than two weeks for the first match, their government has asked for another round of checks to be made. It is also understood that the Pakistan ambassador to Colombo met with the Sri Lankan defence secretary on Thursday and that the SLC has prompted the Sri Lankan defence ministry for an updated threat assessment.”We didn’t get any negative feedback from their board and they never said that they are not coming,” Mani said. “All they are seeking is their government’s permission and they are engaging with them. There are speculations that they are sending their under-strength team but it’s their prerogative. But what is important that international cricket will be played in Pakistan, and Sri Lanka is fulfilling their commitment.”Comprising six games, this will be the longest international series in Pakistan for a decade. It will also mark the first international action in Pakistan in 18 months. The tour was supposed to include two Test matches as well but they have been postponed to December. The PCB wants to host them in Pakistan as well and see this limited-overs series as a trial run towards that ultimate aim.On a different note, but directly relevant, is the appointment of the ICC officials for the series. ESPNcricinfo understands the PCB has already informed them about the schedule but the ICC will carry out its own assessment of the security situation prior to sending match officials. The National Stadium in Karachi will host the ODIs, while the T20Is will be held in Lahore. These will be the first ODIs to take place in Pakistan since Zimbabwe toured for a three-match ODI series in 2015; all the international cricket since the 2017 PSL final has been in the form of T20Is.

Havertz starring for Germany at EurosForward enjoys German breakfast Aims cheeky dig at English cuisineWHAT HAPPENED?

Havertz has been playing in the Premier League since swapping Bayer Leverkusen for Chelsea in 2020, and then joining Arsenal last summer. In that time, he has, seemingly, been starved of his native German cuisine – but now that he is back in his homeland for the Euros, the 25-year-old doesn't have that problem. And it seems he is quite happy to being eating some more familiar grub to the food he has in England.

Havertz is hoping to lead Germany to Euro 2024 glory in front of their own adoring fans. They topped their group and the ex-Chelsea ace says his team-mates are in a confident mood at present.

He added: "Yes, the mood is very good. I think we were very convincing in the group stage and scored a lot of goals. West Ham could restore Bowen with 3-4-2-1 coach who Moyes has never beaten

West Ham United manager David Moyes is out of contract at the end of the season and while talks had been slated, the club's dramatic slump in form has halted discussions.

Still eighth-placed in the Premier League, the Hammers aren't doing too badly, but victory in any competition has not been achieved since December and concerns over the Scotsman's reserved style of play have caused certain segments of the support to voice their dissent.

West Ham manager David Moyes.

On Monday night, the Irons host Brentford in the league and anything other than victory might be detrimental. A list of successors already appear to have been mapped up by chairman David Sullivan and co.

West Ham's manager shortlist

West Ham offer an enticing project for aspiring gaffers looking to make their mark on the continent, and should Moyes be in his final stage as boss in east London, the Inews newspaper has compiled a list of candidates.

Hopes West Ham can now persuade "creative" 4-2-3-1 manager to replace Moyes

He’s a surprise contender.

ByEmilio Galantini Feb 21, 2024

While former Premier League bosses Julen Lopetegui and Steve Cooper are on the radar and would appeal, the standout is undoubtedly Graham Potter, who has been out of work since being sacked by Chelsea last April.

Graham Potter's style of play

Potter rose to prominence for his work with Brighton & Hove Albion, taking the reins following the Seagulls' success in establishing themself as a Premier League contender and stamping in some elite possession-based play.

Described as an "unbelievable" fit for the job by pundit Darren Bent – who did also urge caution against a premature dismissal of the man who gleaned the Europa Conference League last year – Potter would rewrite the script at West Ham, his stylistic set-up diametrically opposed to Moyes' counter-attacking team.

Typically implementing a 3-4-2-1 formation, the 47-year-old makes good use of the pitch's width to control the flow, with fluidity in attacking transition and overlapping wingers crucial for the squad's success.

“I want a tactically flexible, possession-based team,” he once said to The Athletic. “Players who are brave, who aren’t afraid to make mistakes, who can get on the ball and show courage and really try to enjoy their football.”

West Ham are rooted in their ways right now and that would require something of an overhaul, but if Moyes were to go then changing track might be the more prudent move, rather than just seeking to hollowly emulate his style.

Perhaps that would instigate a bedding-in period; possibly it would take some time to work, resulting in a supposed regression, but that is only natural and Potter proved with Brighton that time and resources will enable his project to succeed.

Moreover, Potter is undefeated across seven contests with Moyes, signifying that his style might be the key to succeeding the one-time Everton and Manchester United boss.

So who would benefit from Potter's prospective appointment? Lucas Paqueta would find his creativity magnified, channelled into something more offensively cohesive, while Mohammed Kudus' pace and potency down the flanks would thrive, unshackled in a sense.

But perhaps the biggest beneficiary would be Jarrod Bowen, whose blend of goalscoring ability and dynamism would elevate an already impressive skill set and success in the Premier League.

Perfect for Jarrod Bowen

Bowen signed for West Ham from Hull City in a £20m plus deal in January 2020 (one month after the start of Moyes' tenure), having caught the eye in the Championship and posted 16 goals and nine assists before transferring to the capital.

Integral for the Hammers throughout the years, the England international has scored 54 goals and supplied 36 assists across 189 fixtures, leading Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp to praise him for his "unbelievable" efforts.

Scoring the winning goal as Moyes' men defeated Fiorentina in the Europa Conference League last June, Bowen will likely go down as a modern legend at London Stadium.

Principally a right winger, Bowen has been fielded at centre-forward across multiple outings this season as West Ham struggle against a lack of options up front, and given that he has clinched 14 goals across all competitions – with 11 coming in the Premier League – he might just find his effectiveness in attacking sequences taken to a new level under Potter's stewardship.

Left-footed, he is perfect to slot into that overlapping style that Potter would strive to braid into the club's ideology, while also combative and inventive enough to succeed.

Jarrod Bowen.

The many-faceted ace is also one of the most hard-working and committed players in the business, ranking among the top 14% of forwards across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for tackles, the top 1% for interceptions and the top 2% for blocks per 90, as per FBref, to highlight this point.

Such traits will hardly work against him, should Potter arrive this year, and given Bowen's performances over the past several years, there's no reason to believe that he wouldn't flourish, despite having to stylistically transform after spending the entirety of his time at West Ham under Moyes.

Potter's pedigree as a manager has been blotched by his stint at Chelsea, and while he did flatter to deceive, the conditions were tough at Stamford Bridge and it might not have been the most auspicious path to have taken, all things considered.

Nonetheless, West Ham might be the perfect project for him to resume his managerial career with, and while the Irons would require a major tactical reshift, he could make it work, bringing out the best qualities in stars such as Bowen.
