Oman miss out on direct qualification to T20 World Cup

Decisive three-wicket hauls from Dominic Blampied and Elliot Miles denied Oman their fifth win in six group games, a result that would have helped them top Group B and seal direct qualification to the T20 World Cup.Later in the day it was confirmed that Ireland topped Group B on net run rate – the only way they wouldn’t have finished No. 1 was if UAE beat Canada by a gargantuan margin, or vice versa, and that didn’t happen.* Oman will now face Namibia in a qualifier, the winner of which will go through to the T20 World Cup. The loser will get another opportunity, in a second qualifier against Hong Kong.Earlier, Papua New Guinea had become the first team to seal an automatic berth by topping Group A.After electing to bowl, Oman had to contend with a brisk opening stand of 60 between Nick Ferraby and Nick Greenwood. But a menacing spell from Mohammad Nadeem – the medium-pacer took four wickets for a career-best haul – soon reduced Jersey to 79 for 4 and then 96 for 5. Jersey’s lower-middle order strung together only 45 in the last seven overs to lift them to 141 for 7.While Nadeem’s wicket burst was damage control, Blampied did the damage early on. In the second over of the chase, he dismissed Khawar Ali, Aqib Ilyas, and Aamir Kaleem to leave Oman 6 for 3. A 76-run stand between Jatinder Singh and Zeeshan Maqsood kept Oman in the hunt, however. The partnership had left Oman needing 60 off 48 balls to top the group. But Miles would then come in the way – he dismissed both Jatinder and Maqsood, who made 56 – and accounted for wicketkeeper Suraj Kumar in the middle as well. From 82 for 3, Oman slipped to 103 for 6 in the 17th over. The remaining runs were too much for the lower order to chase down. They will now have to compete in the qualifier playoffs round to try and go through to the T20 World Cup.

Approach made as Man City make move to sign £100m star Bruno Guimaraes

Unfortunately for fans of other Premier League teams, Manchester City are showing little sign of slowing down as the champions look set for another big summer spending spree.

Pep eager to bolster City's midfield

Part of what has made the Man City winning machine unstoppable in recent years is that they are rarely content with what they have. Pep Guardiola and co are always on the lookout for where they can upgrade on the pitch, rarely afraid of opening the chequebook to get a deal over the line.

David Ornstein: Man City have offer "accepted" to sign French-born "talent"

He’s been attracting plenty of interest.

ByCharlie Smith Mar 16, 2024

The top City's in-tray for the summer window appears to be midfield reinforcements, with the treble winners linked to both West Ham's Lucas Paqueta and Germany star Jamal Musiala.

A player who can perform to the heights of Rodri, Bernardo Silva and Kevin de Bryune appears to be the target for City as the champions begin to set out what life after the trio may look like. Whilst there are a number of names on City's shortlist, it appears that the side have made an approach for one who they view as the future of their midfield.

Man City make approach for Guimaraes

As first reported by journalist Rudy Galetti on X, Man City have made an approach in their pursuit of Newcastle United star Bruno Guimaraes. The Brazilian has been a long-term target for the Manchester outfit and Guardiola's men are working to close the deal before the summer window opens.

Reports last week suggested that City were considering exercising the £100million release clause in the Newcastle man's contract with this new development indicating a more concrete interest in getting the deal over the line. It is clear that the champions are eager to strengthen in the middle of the park and may view Guimaraes as their number one target.

The 26-year-old has been electric since arriving on Tyneside in June 2022, acting as the catalyst for Newcastle's surge towards Champions League football last season. As the Toon crash back down to earth and look set for mid-table obscurity this campaign, a player of Guimaraes' quality may well be out of the door this summer.

In signing Guimaraes Man City could boast a creative midfielder that rarely shies away from doing the dirty work in the middle of the park. His profile could make him a near-perfect match for De Bruyne who has struggled with injury throughout the course of this season.

The Brazilian's time on Tyneside has seen him become a fan favourite at St James' Park with manager Eddie Howe heaping praise on the midfielder after a brace against Nottingham Forest back in February, telling the press:

"I think [Guimaraes] is [world class]. I think he has unbelievable qualities that we see on a daily basis. He is versatile, fundamentally he has a great attitude to life and football, he can produce moments of magic like he did against Nottingham Forest."

With proven quality in the Premier League and room to get even better, there are arguably few better options for Man City to pursue this summer than Guimaraes.

  • Greenwood still to agree to transfer
  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Marseille have agreed to pay the Red Devils a total of €31.6 million (£27m/$34m) for the England international, reports. That sum is made up of a €27.6m (£23m/$30m) fixed fee and a further €4m (£3.4m/$4.3m) available in add-ons. The Red Devils, according to Ben Jacobs, have inserted a clause that will see them receive 50 per cent of any future transfer fee Marseille receive, however, the Premier League team can even buy further percentage points in the future.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Marseille still must convince the 22-year-old to agree to join new coach Roberto De Zerbi's squad. After an impressive season on loan at Getafe, in which he scored eight goals and registered six assists in La Liga, the likes of Atletico Madrid, Borussia Dortmund, Juventus and Napoli have all been linked with a move for the attacker. Lazio also reportedly made bids for Greenwood but the club's president dismissed talk of a possible move after they missed out on his signing last year.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

Marseille fans have expressed their anger at the prospect of the club signing Greenwood because of the charges of attempted rape, assault and coercive and controlling behaviour he was set to face before they were eventually dropped. However, coach Roberto De Zerbi has pledged to protect the forward as if he was his own son in the face of criticism.

Rain ruins series opener after Babar Azam's fifty

Only 18.1 overs were possible on a wet day in Sydney

The Report by Andrew McGlashan03-Nov-2019Australia 0 for 41 v Pakistan 5 for 107 (Babar 59*) No resultAustralia’s winning run in T20Is was halted by the Sydney weather when they were on track to take the opening match against Pakistan which had already been truncated by rain.Chasing a revised 119 in 15 overs, after Pakistan’s innings was interrupted after 12.4 overs, Aaron Finch laid into Mohammad Irfan’s second over which cost 26 runs – including two sixes and a no-ball that went for four – and put them well ahead in the chase, with the wicketless par score after five overs being 33.However, with 11 balls still needed to reach the five-over mark and constitute a match the rain returned. At the other end to Finch, David Warner didn’t need to do much more than watch as he finished on 2 off 4 deliveries which extended his run of being unbeaten in T20Is.The bright spot for Pakistan was new captain Babar Azam – the No. 1-ranked T20I batsman – who was head and shoulders above his team-mates with 59 off 38 balls but he was the only visiting batsman to find some fluency.Babar Azam watches one race away•Getty ImagesAfter Finch opted to bowl, Mitchell Starc handed Australia an excellent start as he had Fakhar Zaman caught at point with his second delivery and when Haris Sohail played a poor stroke, carving high into the air on the off side, Pakistan were 2 for 10 in the second over.Azam and Mohammad Rizwan rebuilt and after the Powerplay Pakistan were a touch more sturdy on 2 for 38 without having put Australia under pressure other than when Rizwan skipped down the pitch at Adam Zampa, who was introduced in the fourth over, and sent him for four and six in consecutive deliveries. However, that was about the best of Rizwan’s innings as he struggled to move through the gears, and was troubled by the pace of Pat Cummins, failing to score a run-a-ball against anyone other than Zampa before picking out long-on against Ashton Agar. When the rain arrived Pakistan were 3 for 88 off 12.4 overs and on resumption managed 19 runs off the remaining 14 deliveries with Kane Richardson conceding just seven from an excellent 14th over that included the wicket of Asif Ali and an edged four from Azam that took him to his fifty.Azam will need greater support from his team-mates when the series moves to Canberra for the second match on Tuesday.

Juventude e bons números no Carioca

Gary Kirsten would 'love' return to international coaching

England head coach candidate switches focus to leading Welsh Fire in the Hundred

George Dobell21-Oct-2019Gary Kirsten has confirmed he would “love to get back into international cricket” despite missing out on the role of England head coach. While Kirsten said he was “not bothered” by having failed to win the England role, he insisted he was prepared to endure the months on the road that are inherent with international coaching and said he would have accepted the job had it been offered.Kirsten was seen as favourite for the England job once Alec Stewart pulled out of the reckoning. He has enjoyed successful spells as coach of India and South Africa and, having initially said he would only consider the position in one format of the game (either red- or white-ball coach, but not both), then reconsidered and made himself available for the entire role. But he is believed to have underwhelmed in his interview. As well as demonstrating comparatively little knowledge of England’s current team, he seems to have expressed some trepidation towards the side’s relentless schedule. And while he is adamant he was keen on the job, he admitted he was apprehensive about the time he would have been required to spend away from home.Former South African opening batsman Gary Kirsten is named as head coach of Welsh Fire for the Hundred•Getty Images

“I wouldn’t have flown across the world if my heart wasn’t in the job,” Kirsten told ESPNcricinfo. “It would have been a great opportunity. I’ve always wanted to be involved in English cricket. But it is hectic, without a doubt. It means you are probably away from home for 250 days a year.”My kids are little and I placed a huge importance on being able to see them as regularly as I could. But I discussed it with my wife, we’ve done it before with India so we know the space, and we said ‘we’ll make it work if we can’. They [the ECB] said they were going to create [some space for time off in the schedule].”I’m not bothered by the decision. Everyone makes the call they need to. It’s great to be part of the Hundred, actually. I was going to lose that if I got the England job. This will be exciting.”Despite his enthusiasm for the Hundred, where he will coach Welsh Fire, Kirsten hinted he may pursue more international coaching roles in the future.”I’d love to get back into international cricket,” he said. “I’ve been out of international cricket for six years. I only came over to England because I was excited by the opportunity. I would have accepted the job.”

Imperious Kohli writes off Williams and West Indies

He struggled initially but converted a nine-ball-three and a run-a-ball 20 into a match-winning 94 off 50

The Report by Sidharth Monga06-Dec-20194:32

Star Sports Match Point – Pathan runs out of adjectives for Kohli

An unmistakable sign of greatness shone through as Virat Kohli sealed India’s sixth straight successful chase at home, their second-highest successful one overall. For a large part of the chase, Kohli kept fighting himself, unable to find his touch, but he found a way to turn a start of a nine-ball-three and a run-a-ball 20 in a two-run-a-ball chase into a match-winning 94 off 50. And he didn’t play all that well. Let it sink in. That’s greatness right there.Animated, furious at himself and the opposition, Kohli had a capacity crowd live the chase with him. At one point, he hit a six and mocked Kesrick Williams’ signature celebration wherein he pulls out an imaginary notebook from his pocket and pretends to strike off the batsman’s name off. This was a rare high-scoring T20 match where the side scoring fewer runs in boundaries ended up winning. India managed 120 in boundaries as compared to West Indies’ 134, but West Indies made up for it with the extras they conceded: 21 to India’s four, not counting leg-byes, which are not a sign of ordinary discipline.West Indies refuse to slow downThe last time India won the toss, they chose to bat against South Africa, knowing fully well defending is their weaker suit, especially in dewy conditions. That, though, was with a series lead in hand. In the series opener against West Indies, they stuck to chasing. West Indies knew they had their task cut out. From the moment Evin Lewis got stuck into Washington Sundar in the first over, West Indies were on a mission to get themselves a defendable total. It didn’t matter that Lendl Simmons fell in Deepak Chahar’s first over. Brandon King hit the third ball he faced for four. Nor did Lewis’ wicket for 40 off 17 in the sixth over slow them down. When King fell in the 11th over, Shimron Hetmyer immediately hit Ravindra Jadeja for four.Chahal makes the differenceIt seemed India may have missed a trick not bowling the legspin of Yuzvendra Chahal the moment Kieron Pollard walked out. It was 107 for 3 after 11 when Chahal could have exploited Pollard’s weakness against legspin. Instead Shivam Dube was hit for 13, and Jadeja for 12 in the next. However, by getting the wickets of Hetmyer and Pollard in the 18th over, Chahal may have made sure West Indies don’t make an absolute killing of the final few overs. Jason Holder’s nine-ball-24, though, took them to a total India have never chased successfully before.Rahul charges at West IndiesDew was going to play a part, but India still needed a quick start to this chase. Back as opener in Shikhar Dhawan’s absence, KL Rahul provided just that. He went after Holder in the second over, and then made sure India didn’t fall streets behind when Kohli struggled for a start upon the early dismissal of Rohit Sharma. Along the way he became the third-fastest to 1000 T20 international runs in terms of innings taken to get there.BCCI

The Kohli showAt the other end, though, Kohli was just not himself. But in being that, he was more himself than he can ever be. At every shank, he kept admonishing himself. Then he tried harder, and shanked harder. West Indies, generous with wides, were smart with their changes of pace. Perhaps a word or three flew too. A border-line no-ball call for height went West Indies’ way. Kohli reacted to everything, especially to the bowlers’ interaction with him. Many a great batsman are known to go in their shell and only respond to chirping once the job is done, but Kohli was thriving on it. He was perhaps looking for it. Who knows if there was any chirping? All we know is Kohli was not happy, and he was willing himself to concentrate harder. Reading body language is usually fraught with risks, but you could obviously say Kohli on this night was in some other zone. And with every single he took, the asking rate went up. At the halfway mark, India needed to go at 11.9 an over. Hayden Walsh then bowled a lovely over but Kohli got away with an inside edge for four. In the next over, Holder set him up for the slower bouncer, which has brought him success with Kohli before, but this top edge sailed over for six. Then he smacked a full toss for four and fought with the umpires for a no-ball. The man was fighting every inch, hyper aware of everything. In the 13th over, Williams bowled two no-balls, but it was still obvious that Kohli was struggling for timing against him. Amid all this, Rahul drilled Khary Pierre straight to long-off. India still needed 78 off 39, and Kohli had only just begun to find his bearings.EndgameIndia promoted Rishabh Pant, which brought them double dividend. Apart from the right-left combination, it meant the legspinner Walsh didn’t bowl anymore. And Pant made sure of that with the first ball he faced, getting down on a knee and smacking Pierre for a six. Kohli fed off it, and went after Holder in the next over. Nineteen runs came off five balls, and at 55 required off 34, India’s win probability had gone from 27 to 73 according to Cricinfo’s forecaster.Trying big hits, Pant and Shreyas Iyer fell to keep West Indies interested but Kohli was never going to come back with the chase unfinished. Not on this night.

Spurs will look to sign another left-footer after Dragusin – Sky reporter

Sky Sports reporter Michael Bridge has shared "another target" for Tottenham this summer as manager Ange Postecoglou seeks to upgrade further.

Radu Dragusin's starting debut to forget at Spurs

In the absence of star defender Micky van de Ven, January signing Radu Dragusin made his long-awaited full debut against Fulham just before the international break.

Tottenham really want £60m striker as Levy seeks Kane replacement

Spurs are also keen on a number of other strikers.

ByEmilio Galantini Mar 23, 2024

Unfortunately for the Romania international, it was one to put behind him, as he struggled on the left of a defence which conceded three in a damp 3-0 defeat away at Craven Cottage.

The 22-year-old's sky-high potential is there, and his agent Florin Manea revealed on Sunday that Dragusin is working tirelessly on his game in Tottenham training – even putting in three extra hours across time in the gym and on the pitch.

"He doesn’t go out," said Manea in an interview with Fanatik.

"We went out twice to a restaurant. He leaves at 9am, and comes back at 3-3.30pm, because he puts in an extra two hours of gym every day and an hour on the pitch.

“It’s not exactly easy. It’s like having a job. He grafts and grafts. There’s also this pressure, he’s thinking about the national team, the Euros. He really wants to succeed. I think we can already say that he is one step in the winning boat.”

Following van de Ven's latest injury, Postecoglou has admitted that Spurs may look to sign another defender, regardless of Dragusin's arrival. It is unclear what their role in the squad would be, as the club would then have four senior central defenders, and the fourth isn't guaranteed to get much game time at all.

Tottenham targeting left-footed defender this summer

Despite this, it appears another centre-half is very much on the Spurs agenda. Speaking to GiveMeSport, Sky journalist Bridge has claimed that Tottenham are likely to chase another left-footed centre-back in particular.

Ange Postecoglou

"Ben Davies is reliable in terms of squad depth, in terms of experience, and leadership," said Bridge.

"He can also play on the left side of central defence. I think we saw in the previous game that Radu Dragusin came in as Micky Van de Ven was injured but on that left-hand side and it was a difficult afternoon for him. So I think a left-footed centre-back will be another target for Spurs in the summer. I don't think Spurs will be rushing the likes of Ben Davies out the door, even if it's just a squad member."

In terms of who they should bring in, we believe Bournemouth defender Lloyd Kelly would be an astute choice. The Englishman is out of contract this summer, meaning Tottenham can snap him up for free, and his pace is arguably suited to Postecoglou's high line.

Sunderland must rue letting a "dangerous" Mundle upgrade leave

Sunderland are now glancing nervously at the Championship relegation zone, the Black Cats unbelievably finding themselves just nine points off the dreaded bottom three after suffering six defeats on the spin in the second tier.

At one point, the main goal for the Wearside outfit was attempting to achieve promotion to the Premier League. Now, the more immediate aim could well just be to bring stability back into the building and stop the rot before they sink any further down the league standings.

New bodies in through the door in January haven't exactly exploded into life to help raise spirits for Mike Dodds' men, with Romaine Mundle scoring his first goal for Sunderland against Southampton last time out generating somewhat of a smile from the Black Cats fanbase amidst a quiet start otherwise from the ex-Tottenham Hotspur youth player.

Sunderland would love to turn back the clock and have one former loanee back on their books to make the mood more positive, with the one-time Black Cats attacker in question starring down the right wing – where Mundle has lined up for his new team – in the Premier League now.

Antoine Semenyo's time at Sunderland

Antoine Semenyo's brief loan spell at Sunderland has been somewhat forgotten about, considering how little impact the current AFC Bournemouth attacker made on those at the Stadium of Light back in 2020 and also what he has since gone on to achieve after the short-term move.

Still, the now 24-year-old winger – despite only managing to play 184 minutes for the Wearside outfit at the time – was well thought of by then Sunderland manager Phil Parkinson during his short spell.

Lineup for Semenyo's debut

Portsmouth 2-0 Sunderland: League One, Feb 2020

1. GK – Jon McLaughlin

2. RB – Luke O'Nien

3. CB – Joel Lynch

4. CB – Jordan Willis

5. CB – Bailey Wright

6. LB – Denver Hume

7. CM – George Dobson

8. CM – Max Power

9. RW – Chris Maguire (Antoine Semenyo subbed on)

10. LW – Lynden Gooch

11. ST – Charlie Wyke

Sourced by Transfermarkt

Parkinson would praise Semenyo for being a "dangerous" presence for his then League One Black Cats team from off the bench, but the young loanee would never really be able to displace the likes of Charlie Wyke and Chris Maguire who were experienced and reliable heads up top.

The Ghana international would never really kick into gear for the Wearside giants, making just seven appearances before returning to Bristol City goalless.

Yet, regardless of this underwhelming loan stint so early into his career, Semenyo would go from strength to strength after this back at his parent club.

Not even the most optimistic Sunderland fan would have predicted that Semenyo would go on to have a career in the Premier League after failing to break into the Black Cats' first team, but the Wearside oufit must now watch on knowing the peaks Semenyo has managed to get to wondering if they could have utilised the Cherries star more effectively at the Stadium of Light.

Antoine Semenyo's statistics since leaving Sunderland

Semenyo would eventually turn into a creative, goalscoring menace back at Ashton Gate, Bristol City rewarded for continuing to persist with their one-time Academy prospect until he would repay their unwavering faith with exceptional displays back.

Semenyo's breakthrough 2021/22 campaign would see him score eight goals and pick up 12 assists from 31 appearances, becoming a key performer for the Robins that season in the process after previously fading in and out of contests.

He would even be called up to the Ghana squad off the back of this standout campaign, with interest from higher-up suitors following closely behind.

It was going to take a hefty bid for Bristol City to part ways with their star man, and when top-flight side Bournemouth offered up £9m to try and persuade the Robins to offload their breakout winger, it was an offer the second-tier club couldn't refuse.

Bristol City's record departures – top five

1. Alex Scott

€23m (£19.6m)

2. Adam Webster

€22.22m (£18.9m)

3. Lloyd Kelly

€14.80m (£12.6m)

4. Jonathan Kodjia

€12.80m (£10.9m)

5. Bobby De Cordovia-Reid

€11.35M (£9.6m)

Sourced by Transfermarkt

Still, although Bristol City managed to bank a respectable £9m, Semenyo doesn't quite break into their top five record departures looking at the table above.

His exit will sting more now when you look at how swimmingly he's taken to top-flight life, however, with the Cherries winger onto five goals now this campaign in such a demanding and tricky division.

Sunderland will aim not to be so hasty in writing off Mundle like they were with Semenyo on loan, with the Bournemouth number 24 standing out once more recently playing the role of goalscoring hero in a 2-0 away win at Burnley for Andoni Iraola's men.

Mundle will hope he can settle into his new surroundings better after breaking his duck against Russell Martin's Saints, with the Black Cats in desperate need of a dependable figure in attack like Semenyo now to end their disastrous run of losses.

Romaine Mundle's struggles at Sunderland

Mundle did shine in spurts at St. Mary's away from his deflected strike catching Gavin Bazunu off-guard, the ex-Standard Liege man winning four duels in total to try and stop a Southampton comeback.

Yet, Sunderland need a prolific figure in attack – especially with Jack Clarke in the Stadium of Light treatment room – and so Mundle will have to show this hunger and desire to score goals on a consistent basis away from this one-off contest versus the Saints to further impress.

The 20-year-old has struggled to get consistent first-team minutes away from this game which hasn't helped him fully acclimatise, averaging just 46 minutes per match so far in a Sunderland strip.

The stuttering Wearside outfit will need to be patient and hope Mundle can blossom into a hero for the club over time alongside their other inexperienced squad members.

They will be anxious about history repeating itself considering that Semenyo was once disregarded as an underwhelming winger whilst on loan, and has since gone on to become a devastatingly effective attacker for Bournemouth in the top flight.
