Srinivasan set to preside over working committee meeting

N Srinivasan is set to preside over the BCCI’s working committee meeting, two months to the day he said he would step aside as board president for the duration of the probe into the IPL fixing mess

Amol Karhadkar31-Jul-2013N Srinivasan is set to preside over the BCCI’s working committee meeting to be held in New Delhi on Friday, two months to the day he said he would step aside as board president for the duration of the probe into the IPL fixing mess. The committee that carried out that investigation submitted its report on July 28 but the manner in which it was set up was struck down two days later by the Bombay High Court as illegal and violative of the BCCI’s own constitution. However, that ruling, and the public outcry that followed it, seems to have left the BCCI president unfazed. A senior board official said public criticism wouldn’t affect the BCCI’s way of functioning.”The president had stepped aside till the probe was complete. Now that the probe is over, he has decided to return to action,” the official told ESPNcricinfo, requesting anonymity. “It doesn’t matter what the court has observed. Our legal cell will look into the matter.”The two-man committee was investigating charges against the holding companies of Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals besides Raj Kundra, the Royals co-owner, and Gurunath Meiyappan, senior management official of Super Kings and also Srinivasan’s son-in-law.Following the public uproar after arrests of three Royals cricketers and Meiyappan, Srinivasan had stepped aside, paving the way for former president Jagmohan Dalmiya to look after the BCCI’s day-to-day affairs. However, once the probe panel submitted its report to the working committee, it was clear that Srinivasan would officially return to power at the earliest. It remains to be seen if Dalmiya, who had admitted that the BCCI had been embarrassed due to the court order, is rewarded for handling the board’s affairs over the last two months.Dalmiya, for his part, was quoted by as saying he was clueless about what was happening in the BCCI. “I’m totally in dark about what’s happening at the board. I’ve not been communicated anything. I’m just hearing all these in news reports,” he said. “Perhaps I’ll find out after going there for the working committee meeting in New Delhi.”

Ansiedade leva a empate

USA strip Taylor of captaincy for Auty Cup

USA’s Steven Taylor has been stripped off the senior team captaincy for the Auty Cup in Canada from July 25 to 28, and has been given a one-match suspension for transgressing the team’s curfew

USA’s Steven Taylor has been stripped of the senior team captaincy for his side’s tour to Canada for the Auty Cup from July 25 to 28, and has been given a one-match suspension after United States of America Cricket Association (USACA) announced on Tuesday that he had been involved in a breach of the team code of conduct and tour protocols last week, while on the USA U-19 tour to Canada for the ICC Americas U-19 Division One tournament.According to a USACA press release, the 19-year-old Taylor, along with team-mate Trevis Ross, 18, admitted to breaking the team’s 10pm curfew, when they went out drinking on July 12 and didn’t return until 2.30am the following day. Taylor took to Twitter to boast about his escapades in the early morning hours, posting a series of tweets from 1.28am until 2.19am which stated: “Random girl trying to get mi drunk lol”, “Shot after shot!!!!!!!!!” and “I’m drunk.”In addition to the tweets, Taylor posted an Instagram photo showing a bottle of rum with two full glasses, as well as a short Instagram video featuring him and Ross singing along to music being played in the background, while Taylor makes obscene gestures to the camera. The Instagram photo and video have since been removed. As part of USACA’s official statement, Taylor issued a formal apology: “I wish to publicly apologise to my team-mates, the US coaching staff, and to USACA for my actions,” Taylor said. “They were selfish and do not reflect the behaviour that the captain of a national team should display. I feel that I have let myself down and brought dishonor to the game and the US team. I am hopeful that I can learn from this mistake and make amends on and off the field during the Auty Cup.”USACA made the announcement on Tuesday after the team returned from the tour. USACA chief executive Darren Beazley met with Taylor before issuing the reprimand. Ross received a written warning for his involvement in the incident with USACA’s statement claiming he broke curfew, but was not drinking.”This incident is regrettable and out of step with the new direction for US cricket,” Beazley said. “To play cricket for this country is an enormous honour. If we are to progress to a performance-based culture in our high performance programmes, all players that represent the US must accept the responsibility that comes with wearing the national colors. Both players have made an error in judgment.”The fact that the transgression was not leading into a match day does not excuse the fact that players must give themselves every opportunity to perform at an optimal level, particularly in light of the fact that there was a place in the ICC Under-19 World Cup at stake. I am confident that Steven and Trevis will learn from this mistake and will respond in the best way possible by performing well in the coming months of the 2013 US cricket season.”No decision has been made as to who will take over as USA captain for the tour to Canada. Taylor had been named stand-in captain in place of Steve Massiah, who is one of several players unavailable due to work commitments. USA is scheduled to play a two-day game, one 50-overs match and two T20s as part of the tour.

Amir could be allowed PCB training facilities

A five-member ICC sub-committee, which was set up after the 2013 annual conference to review the anti-corruption code, will also look into relaxing certain conditions of the five-year ban imposed on Pakistan fast bowler Mohammad Amir after the spot-fixing scandal of 2010. While the most stringent stipulations of the ban will still remain, the PCB has requested the ICC to consider a few concessions, especially with regard to Amir using the board’s facilities for training.A PCB spokesman told ESPNcricinfo: “The ICC, during the annual conference week, constituted a five-member committee that will review and recommend amendments to the ICC Anti-Corruption Code, and on recommendation from the PCB, will also provide its suggestions to the ICC board on the ban related to Mohammad Amir.” The ICC was unwilling to the reveal who would comprise the sub-committee.Regardless of the recommendation from the committee, Amir will not be able to play any kind of club, domestic, or international cricket and will not train with the national team. The only significant allowance that could be made is that he regain access to the training facilities offered by the PCB.ESPNcricinfo understands that the PCB made the request to the ICC only because Amir had complied with conditions of the ban: not committing any further breach of the anti-corruption code and undergoing the ICC’s educational and rehabilitation programme. Amir will be available for national selection from September 3, 2015, and the PCB sought the relaxation of some terms so that he could be ready to play as soon as his ban ends, rather than spend more months in training.Amir had not been aware of the PCB’s request but seemed content with anything that would help him return to cricket. He hasn’t been doing full-fledged training but has kept himself in good shape. By the time he completes his ban he will be 23. “I will come hard despite the five-year in-activeness,” Amir had told ESPNcricinfo last year. “I want to come back with my head held high, with a new spirit and as a role model.”Salman Butt, the Pakistan captain who was banned for ten years by the ICC on charges of spot-fixing during the Lord’s Test in 2010, had made a similar request in a personal capacity two days before the ICC’s annual conference. His case, however, was not accepted as it was believed that Butt had not fully complied with the ICC’s conditions.Butt had recently taken the first step in his rehabilitation by publicly admitting to and apologising for his part in the spot-fixing scandal. He also indicated his willingness to participate in the PCB and ICC’s rehabilitation programmes. Five out of Butt’s ten-year ban from any cricketing activities were to be a suspended sentence on condition that he would commit no further breach of the anti-corruption code and participate in a PCB-controlled anti-corruption education programme.Of the three players banned by the ICC before the criminal trial began in London – fast bowler Mohammad Asif being the third – only Amir had pleaded guilty to the charges at the Southwark Crown Court. Both Butt and Asif had pleaded not guilty and appealed their bans at the Court of Arbitration in Sport in Lausanne, Switzerland.

'Have never seen Dhawan bat like this before'

Two men who have watched Shikhar Dhawan closely over the years say that his positive frame of mind has translated into his prolific streak

Abhishek Purohit13-Aug-2013Ever since he cracked 187 off 174 against Australia on Test debut in March, Shikhar Dhawan has been the hot topic for the year 2013. And he keeps doing stuff that keeps making him a hotter topic. Man of the Series in the Champions Trophy. Another hundred in Zimbabwe. Now, a 248 in a one-dayer in South Africa. How is he doing what he is doing? How is it different from what he was doing all those years in domestic cricket? How is it different from what he did when he first played for India in 2010? Two men who have watched him closely over the years say that mostly, it is all in the head. Call it what you want – frame of mind, confidence, temperament, mental strength, self-belief; Dhawan’s positivity, along with improved shot selection, has translated into this extraordinary comeback, feel Vijay Dahiya and Lalchand Rajput.Dahiya, the former India and Delhi wicketkeeper, knows Dhawan from his days in junior cricket. He has played with him and later coached him. Was Dhawan always special and just ignored or has something critical fallen into place? Dahiya says he has never come across this avatar of Dhawan before.”I have not seen him batting before the way he is now, even in the nets,” Dahiya told ESPNcricinfo. “That kind of batting display is just phenomenal. There is no comparison. Last year, he had a pretty mediocre Ranji season, if you go by the standards he is setting right now. [Dhawan made 461 runs in 11 innings] which I think is alright for an opener in Indian first-class cricket when you end up playing seven-eight games. He had a fantastic Challenger Trophy [a domestic one-day tournament]. But what he is doing right now is something really special.”After a short, unsuccessful stint with the Indian one-day team, Dhawan was out for a couple of years before the sensational Test debut against Australia. Lalchand Rajput, the former India batsman and now India A coach, says that one knock has generated so much confidence, it continues to feed itself and extend Dhawan’s streak.”One good innings against Australia in the Test match … ” Rajput said. “Cricket is a game of confidence. If you are confident, you bat like a dream. Plus, playing the way he did in England in the Champions Trophy … He has gone from strength to strength and is batting at his peak now.”Dahiya concurs, saying not much has changed in terms of ability. “I think it is more mental,” Dahiya said. “I’ll say that skill-wise, he was the same. What I see now is that mentally he has become very strong. He is backing himself. He is extremely confident, which plays such an important role in any sport. He is playing all the shots against all bowlers in any conditions. That shows how confident he is.”Every time you see him batting, it looks like a display of cricket intelligence. A lot of players who make runs sometimes end up playing shots as if they are millionaires and don’t care about the value of their wickets. If you look at him, though, he is beautifully stretching his purple patch and making it count.”Also, I don’t think he is carrying any baggage. That is something you can’t see from the outside yet – the baggage of expectations. Every time he goes out there, he starts beautifully, understands what is required, and goes on from there. He takes his time to build and then flourishes.”

“I think it is more mental. I’ll say that skill-wise, he was the same. What I see now is that mentally he has become very strong. He is backing himself. He is extremely confident, which plays such an important role in any sport. He is playing all the shots against all bowlers in any conditions. Shows how confident he is.”Vijay Dahiya, the former India wicketkeeper

Rajput had witnessed a very different Dhawan from close quarters just a year ago, when he was coach on the A side’s tour of the West Indies, where the opener averaged 7.50 in the unofficial Tests. Rajput believes Dhawan has used the time away from the national side to tighten his game.”It is not only mental, it is about selecting the right balls [to go after] as well,” Rajput said. “He has matured now and is never satisfied. He wants to do well every game. Look at his conversion rate. If he passes 50 or 60, he gets a hundred, in Champions Trophy, in Zimbabwe, now as well, big hundreds.”In the West Indies [in 2012], he used to play too many shots too early, and as an opener, that is taking too much risk. He always had the shots but not the selection, but now he knows what shot to play and what to not play. He has really developed control over his off-side game.”Dhawan’s form has lasted half a year now. How long before international bowlers find a chink somewhere? Dahiya does not think that moment, although inevitable, has arrived yet. “Everyone will always have shortcomings,” Dahiya said. “It is for the opposition to figure them out. Right now, he has played against almost all the top sides and it does not look like people have sorted something out. We saw in Zimbabwe in one of the games he got out to a short ball but in the next game he was scoring off them. Again, I will say his frame of mind is brilliant right now.”

Gale rues Yorkshire slump

ScorecardChris Woakes took four wickets to take his match tally to seven•Getty Images

Andrew Gale’s disappointment at letting a strong position slip away to hand Warwickshire the chance to claim a third straight win would have been felt more sharply had events elsewhere not favoured Yorkshire. Derbyshire’s surprise win at Hove guarantees his side stay top, while Durham’s defeat at Lord’s leaves the title rival whose results were concerning them most with some ground to make up. Moreover, he left the ground in steady rain, which he will not have minded at all if it is a foretaste of what lies ahead on the final day.Even so, it had been a poor day compared with the opening two, beginning with a sloppy opening session for which Gale could offer no excuse, not least because he was guilty of one of two bad drops that enabled Jeetan Patel to score 63 when he should have been out on 37 or 42. Jack Brooks spilled the first chance, on the square leg boundary, and Gales the second, at short midwicket. Adil Rashid, the legspinner, was the bowler feeling the pain. Those chances came during a stand of 99 between Patel and Keith Barker, who played some fine cricket shots in making 49 and felt he was unlucky to be given run out as he came back for a second to a firm stroke through cover off Rashid retrieved by Brooks. Patel, with less finesse, hit 10 fours and a six over long-on off Ryan Sidebottom that gave Warwickshire an unexpected lead.It was the kind of turnaround that gives one side a fillip and creates uncertainty for the other and it was no surprise in that respect that the eight overs Yorkshire had to negotiate before lunch brought more problems as Chris Woakes removed both their openers. Alex Lees, failing to move his feet, edged to third slip before Adam Lyth, playing across a full length ball, was leg-before.Yorkshire fought back after lunch, Gale seeking to make amends for his drop and Gary Ballance continuing to enjoy his run of form. They added 76 before Gale, trying to adjust to extra bounce, fended a ball from Boyd Rankin that looped to William Porterfield at gully.Yet more wastefulness followed as Rashid, whose early season form with the bat seems to have deserted him, fell to a poor attempted hook and Azeem Rafiq – batting despite a damaged wrist – was caught off bat and pad. When Ballance was bowled by a full-length ball from Woakes off an inside edge, Warwickshire were again firmly in control. Woakes then had Liam Plunkett caught behind – much to the obvious anger of the batsman, who was adamant he had not hit the ball – to finish the day with 4 for 31.When bad light and then rain curtailed play early, Yorkshire’s advantage looked dangerously small at 141, raising the prospect that Warwickshire might need less than half a day to forge a path to victory, should the weather be kind to them. If they pull it off, the gap between themselves and Yorkshire will be 21 points.”We were not at our best this morning, it was uncharacteristic,” Gale said afterwards. “We missed a couple of easy chances, my own included, and we did not bowl well enough, and we probably took a bit of that into our batting.”It would have been nice to be four or five down rather than seven but if we can get anything over 200 I think it will be game on tomorrow. And if there is rain about, results elsewhere have gone for us and it might be one of those days you look back on and think that things have gone our way even though we didn’t play well.”

Yorks blown away by Cobb

Leicestershire closed their Friends Life t20 campaign in style, racing to a 10-wicket win over Yorkshire with 7.5 overs to spare in a one-sided game

28-Jul-2013
ScorecardLeicestershire closed their Friends Life t20 campaign in style, racing to a 10-wicket win over Yorkshire with 7.5 overs to spare in a one-sided game at Grace Road. The Foxes bowled out Yorkshire for 105 in 17.2 overs and then Josh Cobb and Greg Smith knocked off the runs in 12.1 overs.Foxes captain Cobb, who claimed remarkable figures of 3 for 9 off his four overs, followed that up by hitting an unbeaten 52 off 44 balls, clinching victory with a straight six off Will Rhodes. Smith made 39 off 30, hitting seven fours. The massive defeat sentenced the Vikings, last year’s beaten finalists, to bottom spot in the North Group with five points from 10 matches. It was Leicestershire’s fourth win but, like Yorkshire, they failed to make it through to the quarter-final stages. The Yorkshire innings was a feeble affair after they had won the toss. Only opener Alex Lees showed any real resistance, top-scoring with 32, but it summed up his side’s day when he was run out in an almighty mix-up with Jack Leaning as they tried to take a quick single off a ball that had been signalled a wide. Lees hit five boundaries in his run-a-ball innings. The next highest scorers were Adam Lyth and Azeem Rafiq, who both made 12, but there were no partnerships of note as wickets fell in rapid succession.Cobb, who opened the batting and bowling, did the main damage as his occasional spin picked up the wickets of Gary Ballance, Leaning and Rhodes. Shakib Al Hasan took 2 for 26 and Rob Taylor 2 for 24 while 20-year-old Tom Wells held on to three catches. In contrast, Yorkshire dropped two vital catches, with Cobb put down by Lyth at cover when he was on 13 and Smith let off by Iain Wardlaw at third man on 7. They proved costly misses as the Foxes capitalised by taking 34 runs off the eighth and ninth overs, bowled by Moin Ashraf and Rafiq, and strolled to victory.
