Newcastle eye risky 2025 move for £40m maverick with "outstanding" talent

Newcastle United are planning to make a move for a £40m-rated forward in the January transfer window because manager Eddie Howe is a massive fan of the player, according to reports.

Newcastle eyeing free agents

With the summer window now shut, Howe will have to make do with what he has, although there is still an opportunity for him to snap up free agents who are currently without clubs, as Paul Mitchell ponders whether to entice them to St James' Park.

One such figure is Adrien Rabiot, who at 29 years of age is now a hugely experienced player who has represented some of the biggest clubs in European football, most notably Paris Saint-Germain and Juventus. The Frenchman left the latter in the summer, however, following the expiration of his contract, and he is now on the lookout for a new team.

Newcastle have emerged as strong suitors for the midfielder, with Howe potentially considering him a player who can add that extra quality in the middle of the park, linking up with the likes of Bruno Guimaraes and Sandro Tonali in what would be an extremely talented unit. Manchester United are also keen, though, with both clubs contemplating making offers.

Yusuf Yazici has also been linked with a move to St James', with the 27-year-old bringing an end to a five-year stint at Ligue 1 side Lille earlier in the summer, although there are a whole host of clubs in contact with his agents.

Newcastle planning move for "outstanding" £40m maverick

According to a fresh update from Caught Offside, Newcastle are keen on signing Manchester United winger Antony once the January window rolls around, in a move which would divide opinion on Tyneside given the Brazilian's struggles in England so far.

The Red Devils reportedly value the Brazilian at £40m, even though they spent £86m on him to sign him from Ajax, with his time at Old Trafford not proving to be too successful but Howe still "highly appreciative" of his abilities and perhaps believing he can perform a similar transformation to what he has done with Anthony Gordon's end product.

A lack of end product has always been cited as an issue for the 24-year-old, much like current Magpies man Miguel Almiron, with only 11 goals and five assists coming his way in 83 appearances, which is an extremely poor return for a wide attack playing at one of the world's biggest clubs.

That being said, there are still those who rate Antony, with former Red Devils defender Phil Bardsley describing him as "outstanding" last season, having put in an impressive defensive performance in a goalless draw away to Liverpool in the Premier League.

At 24, the United man is still a young player who could improve further, and he does possess a nice left foot with the ability to produce some magic, but Newcastle would be taking a huge risk on him.

ByRoss Kilvington Sep 7, 2024

Granted, Antony could thrive and be an upgrade on the likes of Almiron and Jacob Murphy, but it is also easy to envisage him continuing to be the frustrating player he is at Old Trafford, producing nowhere near enough substance in the final third.

Rising temperatures force PCB to shift women's camp to Karachi

Temperatures in Multan have touched over 40 degrees over the past week

ESPNcricinfo staff05-Jun-2021Rising summer temperatures have led to the PCB shifting a training camp of Pakistan Women from Multan to Karachi.Last week, ESPNcricinfo had highlighted how big a challenge the extreme weather – where temperatures have hovered over 42 degrees Celsius – would pose for the 26-member contingent during their 25-day camp in Multan. At the time, while acknowledging the severity of the conditions, the PCB has said it had few other options but to hold the camp in Multan, given numerous challenges including the need to prepare a bio-secure bubble in the time of the Covid-19 pandemic.Karachi had been earlier ruled out due to a surge in covid-19 cases, while grounds in Central Punjab, according to Urooj Mumtaz, the chair of the PCB’s women’s selection committee, are presently undergoing renovation.Historically during the summer months, the PCB has mostly held camps in Abbottabad, which is located in the hilly Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province and experiences relatively temperate weather. This move comes seven days into the camp, with the women’s team now set to train at Hanif Mohammad Hig Performance Centre. The Multan camp will be wrapped up by Monday, with all players and support staff likely to travel to Lahore by road on Tuesday morning, before boarding a flight to Karachi the next day. The revised camp will resume from Wednesday, with the team spending another 18 days in Karachi as part of the originally designed 25-day camp, which is set to conclude on June 22.The PCB and SLC are understood to be in talks for a potential series in Sri Lanka in July, Wirth the camp serving as preparation for the series. Pakistan are also slated to play in the 50-overs Women’s World Cup Qualifier that is scheduled to take place in Sri Lanka in December.

He’d revive Sterling: Man Utd target late move for £20m-rated "weapon"

The transfer window is set to come to a dramatic close in just a matter of days, and plenty of teams are looking to conduct some last-minute business, including Manchester United.

The Red Devils have been incredibly busy this summer, bringing in many talented additions, including Matthijs de Ligt, Leny Yoro and even Manuel Ugarte, who should be announced any minute now.

However, it would appear that Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Co want to bring in even more new faces to help speed along their revolution, and one of the most surprising players to be touted for a move to Old Trafford in recent weeks has been Raheem Sterling.

Chelsea forward Raheem Sterling.

The Chelsea ace has been frozen out of things at Stamford Bridge and could get back to his best at Old Trafford, which could happen if United also pick up the latest young star touted for a move to the club.

Manchester United transfer news

According to a recent report from Spain, United are one of several teams interested in Girona ace Miguel Gutierrez.

Girona defenderMiguel Gutierrez.

Alongside the Red Devils, the report claims that Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea and Borussia Dortmund are all keen on the talented left-back, while Real Madrid, who own 50% of his rights, have the option to come back in for him.

A price is not mentioned in the report, but the 23-year-old is valued at €24.5m – £20m – by Football Transfers, and while the La Liga side would undoubtedly want more than that, it does suggest that a move might not completely break the bank for a big club like United.

Miguel Gutierrez for Girona against Barcelona.

It could be a complicated and costly transfer to get over the line, but given Gutierrez's incredible form last season, it is one worth pursuing, especially if Sterling makes his way to United, as the young full-back could help revive the Englishman's fortunes.

Why Gutierrez could revive Sterling

Okay, so let's get straight to the point with this one. There is one reason, above all others, why Gutierrez might be able to help Sterling get back to his best at United: his attacking quality.

Yes, the five-capped Spaniard is a more than capable defender, and his ability to do so on the left would, in turn, give the Englishman more license to roam forwards, but it is his impressive level of output that would see him strike up a brilliant partnership with the former Manchester City ace.

For example, in his 40 appearances for Girona last season, the 23-year-old "weapon", as dubbed by U23 scout Antonio Mango, scored two goals and provided nine assists, meaning that he averaged a goal involvement every 3.63 games, which is unreal for a defender.

Moreover, according to FBref, which compares players in similar positions across Europe's top five leagues, the Champions League and Europa League, the former Real ace sits in the top 6% of full-backs for expected assists, non-penalty expected goals plus assists and pass completion, the top 16% for total shots and the top 18% for actual assists, all per 90.

This helps to show that he wasn't just running hot last season, and if anything, playing in a team with more talent around him could help his numbers improve further.

Just imagine a left-hand side with the 82-capped Englishman flying down the wings to get on the end of a brilliant pass from the Girona ace; it could provide another option to Ten Hag during hard-fought encounters.

Ultimately, it could be a challenging transfer to get over the line, but if United really are going to bring Sterling in on some kind of swap deal this summer, then signing the incredibly exciting Gutierrez to help get the most out of him on the left seems like a brilliant idea.

Who will be the next Cyle Larin? Akron's Emil Jaaskelainen, Phoenix Rising's Pape Mar Boye among top names to watch in 2025 MLS SuperDraft

GOAL analyzes some of the brightest prospects that have declared for the 2025 MLS SuperDraft

While MLS Commissioner Don Garber recently noted the league's SuperDraft has been deemphasized compared to other player acquisition mechanisms, it remains a valuable tool for unearthing talent. Players such as Duncan McGuire and Moises Bombito are just two examples of standouts discovered in the past five years.

Last week, 44 players participated in the 2025 MLS College Showcase in San Diego, vying for a chance to shine and secure selection in the upcoming SuperDraft on Dec. 20.

The four-day event gave coaches, scouts, and front-office staff a closer look at NCAA collegiate players who may have slipped through the cracks. For MLS clubs, it’s an opportunity to uncover the next diamond in the rough – or perhaps the next Cyle Larin. The Canada international, the 2015 MLS Rookie of the Year, has become a gold standard for SuperDraft success: a regular with his national team and now a top forward in Europe.

The 2025 MLS SuperDraft takes place Friday at 2 p.m. ET, offering the next generation of North American talent a shot at stardom.

There are list 477 players available in this year's draft. However, five players on that list truly stand out from the rest, and could be some of the first names off the board. GOAL takes a look at the top five prospects.

  • Pape Mar Boye, Phoenix Rising

Offered a Generation Adidas Contract after winning the 2023 NCAA Championship with Clemson, the 20-year-old turned down the opportunity and signed with USL side Phoenix Rising FC instead – opting out of the 2024 MLS SuperDraft. However, he is available for selection for the 2025 edition, and may be the first overall pick as a result.

With Rising across 2024, he appeared 31 times, becoming a Young Player of the Year finalist and an all-League second team selection in his debut professional season.

The young central defender turned heads in his freshman season at Clemson, and he was even named Defensive MVP after their College Cup National Championship victory. Now, two years later, he appears to have his sights on MLS after opting in for the 2025 Draft.

Born in Dakar, Senegal, the 20-year-old stands six-foot-one and he scored two goals and recorded two assists in the USL Championship in 2024.

  • Hakim Karamoko, NC State

In 2024, Karamoko scored seven goals and recorded two assists as one of the standout players in the country. A left-footed inverted winger, Karamoko can play on both sides of the pitch, but excelled on the right. Aat 6-0, he was a foul magnet for The Wolfpack on the right side of the pitch, but was often found dribbling out of tight spaces or delivering outstanding holdup play in the final-third.

The combination of size, skill and pace could entice an MLS side to take him early on in the draft simply due to the potential profile he presents. That, and his highlight reel in 2024 included a few superb long-range efforts with his left boot.

  • Emil Jaaskelainen, Akron

The nation's top scorer, Jaaskelainen was named Big East Offensive Player of the Year after he scored 23 goals over the course of the 2024 season. Son of Jussi Jaaskelainen, Bolton Wanderers goalkeeping legend, Emil is expected to be one of – if not the first – strikers off the board.

He led the nation in game-winning goals in 2024 (six), goals per-game (1.10) and in points per match (2.57). He finished 2024 as Akron's second all-time leading scorer across a single season.

Four of his 23 regular season strikes came from the penalty spot, but he expressed versatility in and around the box throughout the entire campaign, whether on his left or right foot – or his head. A massive presence in the box, his aerial prowess may be what sets him apart from other forwards this draft.

  • Michael Adedokun, Ohio State

Adedokun might well be the first midfielder off the board. The Ohio State man, who can slide into a winger role, scored eight goals and recorded 11 assists in 2024 for the Buckeyes.

Nominated for the MAC Herman Trophy this year, the Nigeria native broke out in 2024, named the Big Ten Midfielder of the Year and a First Team All-Big Ten selection. He led the Big Ten entering the postseason in total points with 27.

His physical composure in the midfield, along with his dominant presence caught attention in 2024 as he displayed a blend of speed, strength and dynamism in the middle of the park.

92% passing: National media wowed by Arsenal star playing in different role

Arsenal have a whole host of stars away on international duty this week as fans watch from behind the sofa in the hopes their squad returns to north London free of injuries, and one fan favourite will be coming away from national team duty with a spring in his step.

Arsenal players away on international duty

Mikel Arteta is already without Mikel Merino and Declan Rice in midfield for the north London derby against Tottenham, so will be praying his midfielders in particular return to London Colney in one piece.

On that note, Bukayo Saka featured for England as the Three Lions cruised past the Republic of Ireland 2-0 in Dublin on Saturday, and the winger was on the recieiving end of a couple of nasty tackles from Robbie Brady, but came away unscathed.

Martin Odegaard’s Norway meanwhile face off against Kazakstan and Austria, the former of which resulted in a disappointing 0-0 draw in which the skipper played the full 90 minutes.

Thomas Partey’s Ghana are in 2025 AFCON qualifiying action, as the 31 year-old played the full game in a disappointing 1-0 defeat to Angola last Thursday, with a chance to redeem themselves on Monday against Niger.

The standout result from this international break from a Gunners perspective is undoubtedly what Kai Havertz and Germany produced this weekend, crushing Dominik Szoboszlai's Hungary 5-0 in a Nations League group match, as Arsenal's 25 year-old found himself in a new role and shone.

German media praise Havertz in new number ten role

While his finishing left a little to be desired – the former Chelsea star missed two "big chances" and hit the woodwork twice – he did get on the scoresheet from the penalty spot, and it was his general play as a number ten that earned him praise from the press in his homeland.

As shared by TBR Football, Frankfurter Rundschau said Havertz's general performance was "world class" outside of his inability to finish his chances, while Sky Germany praised his "good movement" and "good ideas".

Havertz, of course, has been forced to make the striker role his own in north London after they neglected to sign an out and out centre-forward, and has also shone for Arteta in a left centre-mid role, but featured here as a true number playmaker, sitting just behind West Ham target man Niclas Füllkrug.

Arsenal dealt injury blow with potential fourth star set to miss Tottenham

The Gunners could be without a quartet of senior players for their trip across north London.

Whether Arteta ever chooses to adopt a slightly different system than his usual 4-3-3 in order to fit Havertz into this playmaker role remains to be seen, but having a player so full of confidence thriving in a variety of positions can only be a good thing for the manager ahead of such a huge clash against rivals Spurs.

Spurs nearly signed unreal £50m ace for free, now he’s teammates with Kane

It would be fair to say that Tottenham Hotspur's start to the Premier League season hasn't been ideal.

Ange Postecoglou's men have played some entertaining and attacking football, but a lack of cutting-edge has cost them.

Granted, summer signing Dominic Solanke has missed the last two games and is set to return for the North London Derby. However, it still feels like they haven't fully replaced Harry Kane, which could well be an impossible task.

Harry Kane for Tottenham

The Englishman was outrageously effective in his final season with the club and has taken to life in the Bundesliga like a duck to water.

Interestingly, one of his new teammates previously had a trial with Spurs, and in another universe, he would be tearing it up under Postecoglou.

Kane's last two seasons

The thing about players like Kane is that once they break onto the scene, they are generally impressive every season, but among the mess that was Antonio Conte's final year at Spurs, it felt like the England captain once again stepped up to another level.

Former Tottenham captain Harry Kane

Perhaps it was because he knew he would be leaving in the summer, or maybe it was a desire to salvage what was a disappointing campaign for the club. However, whatever the reason was, the Walthamstow-born poacher was immense.

In just 49 games, he scored 32 goals, provided five assists and, had it not been for the inhuman Erling Haaland, he would have finished as the league's top scorer.

Harry Kane celebrates after giving Tottenham Hotspur the lead in the Premier League against Burnley.

Unsurprisingly, the England centurion's incredible form carried on in Germany, and if anything, he took yet another step forward – even if his title curse remains as strong as ever.

In just 45 matches for Bayern Munich, he scored 44 goals and provided 12 assists, meaning he maintained an average goal involvement every 0.80 games; in other words, he produced 1.24 per game.

The former Spurs captain looks ready to go again this season and has a new exciting teammate to play alongside him, a teammate who was once on trial with his former club.

Spurs missed out on Michale Olise

Yes, while it might surprise some, the player in question is French international Michael Olise.

Crystal Palace's Michael Olise

In an interview with BerkshireLive, former Spurs youth coach Mehmet Ali revealed that as a teenager, the talented winger had trials with the North Londoners and Manchester City before joining Reading, where he impressed enough to earn an £8m move to Crystal Palace in 2021.

In South London, the "world-class" dynamo, as dubbed by Micah Richards, had his fair share of injury problems, but when he was on the pitch, his quality was undeniable, and in his final season for the Eagles he racked up an impressive haul of ten goals and six assists in 19 games.

That means he maintained an average of a goal involvement every 1.18 games, which was enough to tempt Bayern into splashing £50m on him during the summer, and it's not hard to see him thriving alongside a player like Kane in the years to come.

Ultimately, spotting talent in young players is one of the hardest things to do in football, and while Olise is undoubtedly one who got away for Spurs, they are well-placed with Postecoglou at the helm to attract plenty of talented youngsters in the years to come – you only have to look at the signing of Archie Gray this summer to see that.

Marnus Labuschagne's one-man show falls short as Gloucestershire hold their nerve

Gloucestershire 179 for 6 (Phillips 44, Douthwaite 3-28) beat Glamorgan 175 for 9 (Labuschagne 93*) by four runsMarnus Labuschagne’s superb unbeaten 93 off 56 balls couldn’t stop Gloucestershire from starting their Vitality Blast campaign with a four-run win over GlamorganGlenn Phillips’ 44 and 30 from Benny Howell off 15 balls saw Gloucestershire post 179 for 6 in Cardiff which always looked like being a challenging total. And despite Labuschagne’s fine innings on his Blast debut, Glamorgan fell just short against some tidy Gloucestershire bowling.Glamorgan weren’t helped by batting second and the fact there were no floodlights available at Sophia Gardens as the skies darkened.Gloucestershire won the toss and chose to bat, and Glamorgan opened with spin at both ends. Andrew Salter cleaned up Miles Hammond in his first over. Ian Cockbain then skied to Timm van der Gugten at mid-on off the bowling of Ruaidhri Smith for 16 as Gloucestershire reached 34 for 2 from their first six overs.Gloucestershire struggled in the first powerplay, but Phillips got the scoreboard moving with consecutive sixes and then a four off Salter. But just when Gloucestershire looked like they were getting going, Chris Dent was caught superbly by Kiran Carlson on the cover boundary for 20 from the bowling of Dan Douthwaite.Phillips was the mainstay of the Gloucestershire innings as they went past 100 in the 13th over. But he fell short of 50 to the part-time spin of Labuschagne when Nick Selman took a fine catch on the mid-wicket boundary.Labuschagne followed in Selman’s path with another boundary catch to dismiss Jack Taylor, but Gloucestershire finished with a flourish as Smith’s 18th over went for 16.David Lloyd’s fine form continued as he started Glamorgan’s reply with a quickfire 28 which included two sixes before he was clean bowled by Josh Shaw. Selman soon followed Lloyd back to the pavilion and when Colin Ingram was clean bowled by Shaw for just a single Glamorgan were 46 for 3 from the first powerplay.Labuschagne and Chris Cooke rebuilt the innings to take Glamorgan to 80 for 3 at the halfway stage and Cooke was dropped on the midwicket boundary in the 11th over. But he wasn’t so lucky when he was caught by Hammond from the bowling off Tom Smith for 26, leaving Glamorgan’s chase in the hands of Labuschagne. He did go to the game’s first half-century from 36 balls, but Carlson fell for 14, Douthwaite was lbw first ball and Salter was run out for a duck trying to keep Labuschagne on strike.Labuschagne gave it everything, but he needed 19 from the last over and couldn’t find the boundary enough despite a six from the last ball as Ryan Higgins held his nerve.
