John Stephenson to return to Essex as chief executive

John Stephenson has been appointed as Essex’s new chief executive officer. Stephenson, the former Essex allrounder who has spent the last 17 years working for the MCC, will take charge at Chelmsford in October.Stephenson, who played one Test for England, came through at Essex and had two spells at the club, between 1984-1994 and 2002-2004. His post-playing career began as MCC Head of Cricket, eventually becoming the club’s Assistant Secretary (Cricket). He steps down from the role, to be replaced by Jamie Cox.His appointment follows a lengthy process to find a successor for Derek Bowden at Essex. Bowden announced his intention to retire in October 2020, shortly after the club had lifted the Bob Willis Trophy, and Essex are believed to have been hit hard financially by the effects of the pandemic.Related

“I’m delighted to have been given the opportunity to come back to Essex as the club had a big influence on my professional career,” Stephenson said. “Having spent over a decade with the club as a player, I couldn’t pass up the prospect of taking on this fantastic role.”The club means so much to so many people and has a key role to play in the wider Essex community. One of my main objectives is to continue and build on the recent success that the club have experienced both on and off the field. With the support of the members, fans and the team, I believe we can continue to compete and bring silverware back to Chelmsford.”Having spent more than a decade largely confined to Division Two of the County Championship, Essex claimed their first title in 25 years in 2017, a season after being promoted. They were Division One champions again in 2019, as well as winning the T20 Blast, but failed to qualify for the top tier from this year’s Championship conference stage, meaning they won’t be in the running to defend either red-ball title in September.Essex’s executive chairman John Faragher said: “After an extensive interview process involving some very high-calibre personnel, John was clearly the outstanding candidate for the position at Essex. His exceptional skillset together with his appreciation of the modern game and the challenges facing cricket in the future were key credentials in making our decision.”He will lead the executive team on our journey to the next level in performance both on and off the field. Although we continue to face numerous problems brought about by the pandemic, we continue to be very focused on the future.”These are exciting times for the club and the board looks forward to supporting and working with John.”

Al-Nassr were looking to carry forward their momentum from the 3-1 win over Al-Akhdoud and they were indeed the dominant force in the first quarter of the match. However, as the match progressed, the hosts started to up the ante and increase their influence on the proceedings.

Cristiano Ronaldo was bottled up by the two central defenders and the Portuguese was forced to drop deep frequently to get more touches on the ball. And just at the stroke of half-time, the 39-year-old cut a frustrated figure as Saad Fahad Al Nasser drew first blood with the defensive line caught napping. The left-back went on the overlap and a teasing cross from Fahad Al-Jumayah escaped the entire Al-Nassr defence to land kindly at his feet, and Nasser did the rest.

Stefano Pioli's men turned up the heat in the second half, showing more precision and purpose in the attacking third. Angelo Gabriel was introduced, replacing Abdulrahman Ghareeb, and the substitution proved a game-changer. He proved to be a menace on the right flank with his probing crosses and in the 64th minute, Aymeric Laporte got his head to one of those deliveries to erase the deficit.

In the final quarter, Al-Taawoun started defending with two blocks of five and four in an attempt to shut down Ronaldo and Sadio Mane. Although Al-Nassr continued to enjoy possession in the opposition half, goal scoring opportunities came at a premium as they lacked the cutting edge in front of goal. They are now 11 points behind leaders Al-Hilal and are fourth in the league table, which means they are outside the qualification criteria for the AFC Champions League Elite division.

  • THE MVP

Angelo was the only bright spark in a rather lacklustre Al-Nassr side. The 20-year-old tried to make things happen with his skill and confidence on a day when the big guns fell deafeningly silent. It was one peach of an assist for Laporte's goal and if his strikers were a bit more clinical the scoreline could have been different.

    THE BIG LOSER

Al-Nassr's brittle defence was once again exposed by Al-Taawoun. Nawaf Boushal couldn't stop the cross from being delivered, Mohamed Simakan was beaten by his marker, whereas, Sultan Al-Ghannam had little idea that Nasser had been lurking behind him during the opener. Going ahead, Pioli must fix his defensive problems if they are going to challenge for the AFC Champions League with the domestic league title already seeming like a distant dream.

A quickfire 46 from Samit Patel and a superb spell of death bowling from Wahab Riaz took Trent Rockets to the top of the Hundred table as they brushed aside the Welsh Fire in Cardiff.Fire had looked set for a very big total after a 72-run stand between Glenn Phillips and Leus du Plooy, but Wahab brought Rockets back into the game at the death. The early dismissal of D’Arcy Short and a cluster of wickets in the middle of Rockets’ innings had given the Fire hope of defending the 140-run target but Patel’s intelligent innings took the Rockets to a straightforward win. Victory takes Rockets to eight points, two points clear of the chasing pack with three group matches still to play.Fire lost two early wickets with Tom Banton and Ian Cockbain both falling inside the Powerplay. Phillips and Ben Duckett looked to rebuild after the loss of both openers, taking the fire to 53 before Duckett was the third wicket to fall when he skied a catch off Steven Mullaney to Riaz. That brought together du Plooy and Phillips who put on the biggest stand of the match. Phillips brought up his first half-century of the competition from just 34 balls. Unfortunately for the home team he could not go on from there, falling to the very next ball. With Phillips and du Plooy well set Fire were eyeing up a total 150 or more. That became 139 for 8 at the end of their 100 balls thanks to a superb final 10 from Wahab Riaz in which he conceded just 11 runs and claimed three wickets.Rockets looked to build a solid platform at the start of their innings, reaching 31 for 1 at the end of their Powerplay. Qais Ahmad removed Dawid Malan and Alex Hales while Mullaney fell to David Payne, giving Fire a chance of defending the total. But Patel and Lewis Gregory put on an undefeated stand of 69 from just 33 balls to take their side to victory.Gregory was bowed by Payne with 25 still needed but a no-ball was picked up by the third umpire and the Rockets pair quickly finished the job in Matt Milnes’ next set.Patel’s innings included five sixes, including a big shot over the bowler’s head to win the game. Rockets won by six wickets with 10 balls to spare and they are very well placed to claim one of the three spots in the latter stages of the tournament.

Sky pundit: Tottenham must sign "quality" ex-Man Utd ace in bargain deal

Tottenham Hotspur simply must sign a “quality” ex-Manchester United player who could be available in a “cut-price” deal, according to a Sky Sports pundit this week.

Man United 0-3 Tottenham as Postecoglou seals fourth straight win

Ange Postecoglou made it four wins in four across all competitions at Old Trafford on Sunday with a resounding 3-0 win over Man United, piling more pressure on the under-fire Erik ten Hag up north.

Goals from the in-form Brennan Johnson, winger Dejan Kulusevski and a third strike in three games for summer signing Dominic Solanke secured a vital three points for Spurs and relieved some of Postecoglou’s own pressure, with the Australian suggesting his Lilywhites side should’ve scored even more.

“No, sometimes it’s just the nature of football,” said Postecoglou on the prospect of an evening bigger Spurs win at Man United.

“We did have some fantastic chances that we probably should have put away, but the pleasing thing for me was that I just got a sense that the players weren’t dwelling on it, they were just focused. ‘Ok, let’s go again and grab another one’.

“And I think that’s when it can become slightly frustrating if we’re kind of dwelling on or second guessing ourselves. I think we had a little bit of that in the first two or three games of the season where we missed a lot of chances and it just felt like we were getting more and more desperate with every missed chance. Whereas, there was a real calmness about the lads today that, ok, we’ll miss one but let’s go again and create another one.”

Solanke isn’t even fully fit yet, according to Postecoglou, but the Englishman is slowly starting to justify his £65 million price tag as he hopes to eventually take Harry Kane’s mantle.

Since tasting defeat in the North London Derby, there have been promising signs of life, with Spurs responding in the perfect manner by winning every game since then. There is also the prospect of chairman Daniel Levy opting to improve the squad further mid-season, and it is believed they have their eyes on ex-Man United starlet Angel Gomes.

Paul Robinson urges Tottenham to sign Angel Gomes

The Lille midfielder was recently awarded his first-ever England call-up and is out of contract in 2025, with reports suggesting that Gomes could be available in a cut-price deal as a result.

Tottenham are considering a move for the 24-year-old, according to various media sources, and Sky pundit Paul Robinson has told Tottenham News that Spurs must sign Gomes as he fits the mould.

“He’s the type of quality player you want your club looking at, obviously. If there is a route back to the Premier League for him, Spurs won’t be the only suitors for him,” said Robinson.

“Lee Carsley is looking more and more likely to get the England job on a permanent basis, and with that in mind, he’s going to get more minutes at international level. He’s a top-quality player.

“A move back to the Premier League won’t be out of the question. If he’s playing at the top level, you want your club to be involved in the race. He fits the mould of the type of player Spurs would sign – young, English and talented.”

Ex-Lille boss Paulo Fonseca is also on record stating he is the “most intelligent” player at the Ligue 1 side right now, and also possesses “big skills”.

“Angel is maybe the most intelligent player I have in my team. He understands faster than the others everything about the game; he loves the game. He loves to learn and he is a player with big skills, big technique,” said Fonseca.

“He is a player who under pressure it is not easy to steal the ball off him and who discovers the space so easily. He is young, he has a big talent. I believe with the right coach, with the right project, with the right game for him, he can have the possibility to have a big step in his career.”

Newcastle named as the team ready to bid in January in 56-cap striker chase

Newcastle United are believed to be the favourites to complete the signing of a “fantastic” striker with 29 goals in 56 international caps.

Newcastle eyeing new signings

The Magpies may be seventh in the Premier League, suggesting that things have been going solidly on the pitch this season, but performances have flattered to deceive too often. A lack of transfer activity in the summer window has caused plenty of frustration among the fanbase, also seemingly affecting the relationship between Eddie Howe and Paul Mitchell.

It is still clear that Newcastle’s squad is in need of additional quality all over the pitch, with Lille striker Jonathan David one player who has been mooted as an option to come in. Talks are said to have taken place over a move for the Canada international, who could replace Callum Wilson when his time at St James’ Park comes to an end.

Aston Villa transfer target Jonathan David in action for Lille.

Meanwhile, the Magpies are reportedly interested in signing Monaco attacker Maghnes Akliouche, too, with none other than Thierry Henry an admirer of the 22-year-old, having managed him for France at the 2024 Olympics earlier this year.

On the flip side, there are some Newcastle players whose time at the club could be coming to an end soon, including Kieran Trippier. The Englishman could join AC Milan, according to one update, with his best days now arguably behind him.

Newcastle favourites to sign attacking star

According to a fresh update from Tutto Juve [via Sport Witness], Newcastle are the favourites to sign David from Lille, with a January move not out of the question despite the fact he will be available for nothing next summer.

The Magpies are “ready to pay the most” in the next transfer window, instead of waiting until the summer, and they are ahead of Serie A giants Juventus and Inter Milan in the race to acquire the 24-year-old’s signature. Neither have the financial power of the Premier League side, putting them in a strong position to get their man.

Canadian striker Jonathan David

David is a huge talent who could forge a devilish striker partnership with Alexander Isak at Newcastle, having already achieved such impressive goalscoring feats in his career. The Canadian has 91 goals in 194 appearances for Lille, proving to be one of Ligue 1’s most deadly attacking players, and he has also netted 29 times in 56 caps for his country. Football talent scout Jacek Kulig is a big admirer of David and has been for some time, once taking to X to laud his various abilities as a footballer.

If Newcastle could pip Juve and Inter to David’s signing it would be a massive coup, given the two clubs’ stature in European football, and it would give Howe the added firepower he craves in the final third, with Isak out injured too often and Wilson expected to move on soon.

BBC reporter now shares brand new Everton update on Sean Dyche’s future

BBC reporter Shamoon Hafez has provided a significant update on Sean Dyche’s future at Everton, with pressure mounting on him currently.

Dyche fighting for his job at Everton

The Merseysiders are in dire straits currently, suffering a string of dispiriting results that have left them languishing at the bottom of the Premier League table after four matches.

Saturday’s 3-2 defeat away to Aston Villa was the second consecutive game in which Everton have blown a 2-0 lead, having also collapsed at home to Bournemouth before the international break, despite leading late in the day.

The fact that the Blues are yet to get a single point on the board this season understandably means that Dyche is under pressure to keep his job as manager, following 20 months in charge at Goodison Park. Opinion among the fanbase appears to be split when it comes to whether he should be sacked or not, but there is no doubt that results have to improve drastically sooner rather than later.

Recent reports prior to the defeat at Villa Park suggested that Dyche has until next month’s international break to save his job, and now a new update has dropped regarding the 53-year-old’s Everton future.

Reporter shares update on Dyche's Everton future

According to Hafez, Dyche is not yet under any threat of being sacked by Everton, despite such an awful start to the new Premier League season.

The report states that the Englishman’s job is “currently safe”, adding that he has “credit in the bank from his 20 months in charge, in which he steered them away from relegation”.

This arguably feels like a fair compromise currently, considering the positives have outweighed the negatives during Dyche’s time in charge at Goodison, steering Everton away from relegation twice.

Granted, the Blues should always be aiming far higher than that, given the size of the club throughout history, but this has been a tricky period there for any manager, amid points deductions and constant takeover issues going on.

As mentioned, some Everton fans may feel that now is the right time to make a change, while others may still think he is the right man for the job. The fact that the Blues have led 2-0 in their last couple of matches does at least suggest that things have been going right in periods, only for the team to fall apart, and it could be a case of improving confidence and belief more than anything.

The key now is for Everton to pick up a few positive results in the coming weeks, or Dyche’s position will surely become untenable, with a further string of defeats having the potential to leave the Merseyside club adrift from other clubs in the table, giving them a huge amount of work to do to avoid the drop.

Dyche has enjoyed a solid managerial career, however, and will back himself to turn things around, and things may feel a lot clearer next month when the international break comes.

Russell Domingo: Nurul Hasan and Mushfiqur Rahim will split keeping duties during New Zealand T20Is

“The plan is to split wicketkeeping duties in this series, make it two games each and make a decision in the fifth game.”

Mohammad Isam30-Aug-2021Nurul Hasan and Mushfiqur Rahim will share wicketkeeping duties in the first four matches during the T20I series against New Zealand, according to Bangladesh coach Russell Domingo. The announcement comes as a bit of a surprise after the team management habitually backed Rahim as their No 1 wicketkeeper in ODIs and T20Is despite questions raised around his keeping skills in the last few years.Rahim has kept in all but four matches in the 86 T20Is of his career, including last year’s Zimbabwe series. Liton Das kept wickets in his absence in the T20Is in New Zealand this year, before Nurul took over against Zimbabwe and Australia. The general feeling among many in Bangladesh is that Nurul is the country’s best wicketkeeper, and given his recent batting form, the team management had to make this call.Related

“(Nurul Hasan) Sohan will keep wicket in the first two games,” Domingo said. “The plan is to split wicketkeeping duties in this particular series, make it two games each and make a decision in the fifth game. I think it is important to have those options covered.”But there’s no questioning Rahim’s importance as a middle-order batter. He will bridge the top and middle order from his No 4 spot, with the expectation that he can bat deep into the slog overs where he often opens up with the big hits.”I see Mushfiq probably starting at No. 4. He is successful there. He can hold the innings together for us. He can also rotate strike in the middle overs. He can finish well for us. It is good to have him back in the squad,” Domingo said.Bangladesh have developed other types of T20 talents like Mahedi Hasan, who is used as a shock factor both with the ball and bat. Mahedi is often tasked to bowl his brand of loopy and at times slingy offspin in the powerplay. He is also considered a pinch-hitter although his domestic numbers say he is more than a capable batter in the top three in T20s.Domingo seems to enjoy having Mahedi in the mix, particularly in a batting line-up that can sometimes slow down. “He is almost a free player for us. A 20 off 12 balls from him is a big contribution for the team. He has played some important little cameos for us in certain stages.”We will use him up the order when we feel we need a little bit of aggression or explosiveness to get ahead of the run-rate, but it is not going to be a regular occurrence. He has done really well in domestic T20s, but it is a big step-up to international cricket.”Mahedi even opened the batting against Australia in the last game, and actually delivered their best opening partnership with Mohammad Naim in the series. Domingo said that the opening partnership isn’t a worry, pointing out that Naim, if he raises his game further, has the potential for a long white-ball career.”(Naim) will be a fantastic player for Bangladesh in white ball cricket. He is still finding his feet. Regarding his technique and ability, his work ethic has been fantastic. He has played some good innings for us. He has some work against spin, when trying to rotate strike. I am very pleased with his progress,” he said. The New Zealand series will also be Bangladesh’s last T20Is before the T20 World Cup, for which they have to announce the squad before September 10. Domingo said ideally, he would have liked the squad being announced before the New Zealand series.”I think the squad needs to be announced a day or two before the New Zelaand series is complete. I think we have a pretty good idea who will be in the squad. It would be great to announce the World Cup squad before we play the New Zealand series, to put players’ minds at ease.”They can go out there and play, without the fear of WC selection just around the corner. But I don’t think we can do that yet,” he said.Domingo said that Bangladesh would like to continue to dominate visiting teams, even though batting conditions may be difficult given the types of pitches that can be prepared at this time of the year in Dhaka.”Winning the series is important. We are playing at home, so we want to continue gaining confidence before the World Cup. In terms of areas of improvement, batting conditions have been really difficult. It would be great if we got some bigger scores, but that depends on what conditions allow you to do.”I think bowling confidence and getting into a winning habit is also very important, so we must make sure we continue to do that,” he said.

Misbah-ul-Haq tests positive for Covid-19, to quarantine in Jamaica

Misbah-ul-Haq, the Pakistan head coach, has tested positive for Covid-19 in Kingston, where Pakistan completed their series of four T20Is and two Tests against West Indies. Misbah will now stay on and complete his 10-day quarantine before travelling home, even as the rest of the Pakistan contingent leaves for Lahore late on Wednesday. In a statement, the PCB said that Misbah, who is asymptomatic, “was the only Pakistan squad member who failed two pre-departure PCR tests”. “The PCB is constantly in touch with Cricket West Indies who have confirmed that Misbah will be shifted to another hotel for the 10-day quarantine with a medical specialist assigned to look after his health and well-being,” the statement said.Related

It was a rain-marred but largely successful tour for Pakistan. Their four-match T20I series had three games that ended in no-results because of the weather, but they won the only completed game, the second, by seven runs to take the series. Then came the Test series, where West Indies clinched a thriller by one wicket to go 1-0 up, but Shaheen Afridi and Fawad Alam headlined Pakistan’s bounceback in the second Test to give them a 109-run series-squaring win on Tuesday.Pakistan are now scheduled to host New Zealand for three ODIs (in Rawalpindi) and five T20Is (in Lahore) from September 17, with the visitors going across to Pakistan – after their tour of Bangladesh – for the first time in nearly 18 years. As part of the home season, Pakistan are also expected to host England for two T20Is (before the Men’s T20 World Cup, in October), and Australia early next year.
