The Germany international’s comments have been made on the back of a shock 3-0 defeat to Feyenoord in the Champions League group stage. Bayern endured a humbling evening to forget when facing Eredivisie opposition on Dutch soil.

    WHAT KIMMICH SAID

Vincent Kompany named a strong side for that contest, with 22-goal striker Kane leading the line, but Kimmich told afterwards: “We have to admit that we are not a top team at the moment. But the group is sticking together. That gives me hope.

“In the Champions League, we are in a very bad position, one that we brought upon ourselves. We are making too many mistakes and being punished for them harshly. The feeling after this clear defeat is very negative. But we must not, under any circumstances, doubt ourselves or the group.”

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Kimmich went on to say, with Bayern putting in another sloppy performance: “Once again we created many chances and were wasteful. We also made it too easy for the opponent. We allowed them too much, that already was the case against Wolfsburg. In the Champions League you get punished for that.

“Overall we didn’t deserve to win. We made too many simple mistakes. Now we shouldn’t complain and should work on correcting these mistakes.”

Defeat against Feyenoord has left Bayern 15th in the Champions League table. They are still in contention to reach the last 16 of that competition, but will likely have to navigate a play-off contest in order to remain in the hunt for European glory.

Sam Evans, Lewis Hill light way Leicestershire take it slow and steady

George Rhodes also records fifty as Derbyshire made to toil in field

Sam Evans made a patient 88•Getty Images

A disciplined batting performance gave Leicestershire the upper hand on the first day of the LV= Insurance County Championship match against Derbyshire at Derby.Sam Evans faced 292 balls for 88 while Lewis Hill and George Rhodes also made half-centuries as the visitors took advantage of a flat pitch. Hill was unbeaten on 86 from 124 balls and Rhodes scored 54 from 84 balls to take Leicestershire to 282 for 3 at the close.Lancashire’s on-loan seamer Ed Moulton claimed the wicket of Evans on his Derbyshire debut but it was hard going for the home attack. With Colin Ackermann serving a one match ban because of a conduct breach by Chris Wright in the previous match, Callum Parkinson captained the side and chose to bat on a sunny morning. His decision was vindicated because despite a green pitch, there was little in it for the bowlers who took only one wicket in each of the three sessions.Evans set the tone for a patient approach by taking 174 balls to reach 50 but it put Leicestershire in a position to go on and make a substantial first-innings total. Derbyshire at least kept it tight with legspinner Matt Critchley the pick of the attack and Leicestershire’s first batting point did not arrive until the 72nd over.Ben Aitchison twice saw edges fall just short of the slips but Leicestershire passed 50 before Hassan Azad edged low to second slip where Wayne Madsen marked his return from nearly three months out with a hamstring injury by taking the catch.Evans and Rhodes added 75 in 31 overs before Rhodes aimed a slog-sweep at Critchley and was bowled when the chance of a big score beckoned. That was Derbyshire’s last success for 44 overs as Evans and Hill raised the tempo to take the score well beyond 200 after tea.Evans combined watchful defence with precise placement on both sides of the wicket but was given two reprieves in successive overs from Anuj Dal. On both occasions, the usually safe hands of Madsen failed to cling on when Evans was on 85 and 86 but he failed to take advantage as Moulton struck late on.Evans got an inside edge into the gloves of Brooke Guest as he pushed forward but with Hill unbeaten at the close, it was very much Leicestershire’s day.

Pundit: Tottenham have a "really exciting" teenager about to replace Davies

Tottenham Hotspur have a “really exciting” teenager who could be about to replace long-serving defender Ben Davies, with the former Swansea City star potentially playing out his final season in north London.

Ben Davies nearing Spurs exit after 11-year stay

Next summer will mark 11 years at Spurs for Davies, following his move to N17 from Swansea in 2014.

Tottenham have "made a bid" to sign attacking gem who's "flying" right now

He’s a very wanted man.

ByEmilio Galantini Oct 16, 2024

Since making the switch to London from Wales, the versatile defender has made an impressive 333 appearances in all competitions for Tottenham, playing in some huge games for the club and showcasing real reliability.

However, the 31-year-old is now reaching the twilight phase of his career and has barely been called upon by Ange Postecoglou so far this season. Davies captained Spurs to a dramatic 2-1 win over Coventry City in the EFL Cup, whilst also starting both of their Europa League games, but he hasn’t played a single minute of Premier League football.

Davies didn’t even make the matchday squad for Spurs’ most recent top-flight clashes against Brentford, Man United and Brighton, with the centre-back/left-back reduced to being a bit-part cup player.

It is believed that Davies earns more than both Destiny Udogie and Micky van de Ven at Tottenham, despite the latter pair’s status as mainstays in Postecoglou’s starting eleven, so chairman Daniel Levy and technical director Johan Lange may well opt to let go of him when his contract runs out in 2025.

Ben Davies among Tottenham teammates

Luckily, Postecoglou appears to have a ready-made replacement for the veteran in summer signing Archie Gray. The 18-year-old can play in a variety of positions, including at full-back, so Gray may well stand out as a very good option to take Postecoglou’s side forward in the coming seasons.

Gray is widely regarded as one of England’s most promising up-and-coming talents, with Spurs utilising his quality on a number of occasions already following his stellar campaign at Leeds United in the Championship last season.

Tottenham tipped to replace Ben Davies with Archie Gray

Speaking to Tottenham News this week, pundit John Wenham has tipped Spurs to replace Davies with Gray. The former could be about to pass the torch down to Levy’s summer signing, with Wenham also branding the teenager “really exciting”.

“Gray is doing really well,” Wenham said.

“I think, at a minimum, he is going to become the next Davies in the squad, in terms of his reliability in multiple positions. Davies is out of contract this summer and I can see Gray taking his role in the squad. Him being so young and counting as homegrown too, that is really exciting.”

Leeds were heartbroken to lose their Thorp Arch academy graduate in the summer, highlighting just how highly rated he is by those working in the beautiful game.

“Understanding the attraction of Premier League and European football, the club, with a heavy heart, agreed the transfer, but the move has strengthened the board’s resolve to ultimately return Leeds to a position where it can meet the footballing ambitions of even its brightest stars,” wrote Leeds in a candid statement (via Ben Jacobs).

“Whilst we understand that supporters will be hugely disappointed to lose such a home-grown talent, and a family name so synonymous with Leeds United, the move improves the club’s chance to compete for automatic promotion next season by increasing our ability to build a competitive squad within the league’s financial control regulations. Everyone at Leeds United is heartbroken to see one of our own depart and would like to thank Archie for all his efforts and professionalism.”

Fulham wages: Who is the best paid player at the Cottagers and everything you need to know about Fulham's salary bill

How much does every Cottagers player earn annually and who receives the most into their account?

Craven Cottage is home to one of the oldest and well-run clubs in English football history, Fulham.

Currently hovering around mid-table in the ongoing Premier League season, Fulham and their loyal supporters are keen on making it through to the European spots after consistently missing out on the same in the last three seasons.

This term, they have produced some good results and can dream of contending for a European spot, should their main men continue to deliver at a high quality until the end of the season.

The likes of Emile Smith Rowe, Antonee Robinson, Raul Jimenez, Bernd Leno, and Alex Iwobi will be at the centre of all the spotlight, with the fans at Craven Cottage hoping that they can lead their team to Europe next season.

So, who is the highest earner at Fulham this season? And who is on the opposite end of the spectrum?

GOAL delved into the numbers from Capology and found out!

Starting in goal, Fulham's first-choice shot stopper Bernd Leno is not just the highest-paid goalkeeper in the squad but surprisingly, the highest-paid player overall. The German goalkeeper signed for the Cottagers back in 2022 from Arsenal and has been an integral part of the squad ever since.

Fulham’s second-highest paid keeper, Steven Benda, earns considerably less as compared to Leno and finds himself among the lowest-paid players at the club.

Former Crystal Palace defender Joachim Andersen is currently the highest-paid defender in the Fulham squad, having arrived from the Eagles in 2024.

Following Andersen in the list for the top-earning defenders at the club is his centre-back partner, Issa Diop. The 27-year-old French defender is currently playing his third season with Fulham since joining from West Ham United back in 2022.

The next best earning defender in the list is right-back Timothy Castagne. The Belgian international joined Fulham back in 2023 from Leicester who had been relegated after finishing 18th in the 2022-23 season.

Much to the surprise of the reader, in-form USMNT left-back Antonee Robinson isn't among the highest-paid defenders, earning just £2.6m per season.

Spanish centre-back Jorge Cuenca is the defender who earns the least at Fulham.

Somewhat surprisingly, Emile Smith Rowe is not the highest-earning midfielder in the squad. Rather, it's Croatia international Sasa Lukic who takes the top spot.

Harrison Reed and Andreas Pereira earn identical wages, with Scottish midfielder Tom Cairney earning the least among Fulham midfielders.

No surprise here, either. The highest-earning attacker in Fulham right now is former Wolves forward Raul Jimenez.

Reiss Nelson, who joined the Cottagers on loan for the 2024-25 season, is the joint-highest earning forward along with Jimenez.

The third-highest earning forward in Fulham is another former Arsenal player, Alex Iwobi.

Speedster Adama Traore takes the fourth spot while Brazilian striker Carlos Vinicius, Welshman Harry Wilson, and youngster Rodrigo Muniz are the lowest-paid members of the Fulham attack.

Liverpool join the race to sign "versatile" 19 y/o ace wanted by Tottenham

Liverpool are believed to have entered the race to sign a “versatile” player capable of thriving on either flank, according to a new transfer claim.

Liverpool transfer news

The futures of Trent Alexander-Arnold, Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah continue to dominate some of the headlines at Anfield, with the trio all out of contract at the end of this season.

Sevilla ace Juanlu Sanchez has been linked with a move to Liverpool, potentially being eyed up as a replacement for Alexander-Arnold, should the unthinkable happen and the Reds’ vice-captain decides not to sign an extension at his boyhood club. The 21-year-old can thrive at right-back and in midfield, and represented Spain’s Olympic team earlier this summer.

In terms of a possible Salah replacement, Athletic Bilbao star Nico Williams is reportedly being viewed as a target, following an outstanding Euro 2024 campaign with Spain, winning the trophy and registering three goal contributions (two goals and one assist).

Meanwhile, Freiburg youngster Merlin Rohl has also emerged as a rumoured option for Liverpool, with his current club desperate to keep hold of him, offering him a new contract in the process. It remains to be seen if the midfielder’s head will be turned by the Reds’ interest.

Liverpool in the race to sign versatile ace

According to TuttoMercatoWeb journalist Niccolo Ceccarini [via Sport Witness], Liverpool are in the race to sign Lecce left-back Patrick Dorgu, with Tottenham also thought to be eyeing a move for him.

The 19-year-old is also wanted by Serie A giants Napoli, while AC Milan are mentioned as potential suitors, too, with his current team knowing it will be “difficult” to retain his services beyond this season, not least if an “important” offer arrives from another club.

At 19, Dorgu is still such a young player, so it would be unfair to expect him to be a star from the off at Liverpool, but he could be an ideal addition for Arne Slot.

Smarterscout have lauded his ability on X, saying: “Patrick Dorgu could be on course for a breakout season. A versatile wing player, he can play anywhere on the left or even as a RW. He showed promising signs with his link-up play and movement into the danger area last season, so he should aim to build on that.”

Dorgu can excel at left-back, meaning Liverpool could view the Lecce youngster as a long-term replacement for Andy Robertson. Now 30, the Scot may just be slightly past his absolute peak, so the Dane could come in as an understudy to begin with, prior to usurping the Reds hero.

The fact that the two-cap Denmark international can also play on the left wing is an added bonus for Slot – he can thrive on the right-hand side in defence and attack, too – so it is easy to see why the Reds value him. There is clearly stiff competition for him, but Liverpool are still arguably the most exciting option out of themselves, Spurs, Napoli and Milan, given their current standing in Europe.

'It's the identity of St. Louis: hard working, energy, intensity' – New manager Olof Mellberg wants to change St. Louis City's fortunes after forgettable 2024 season

The former Aston Villa and Juventus midfielder believes he can revamp a struggling side that finished 12th in the Western Conference

MIAMI – Olof Mellberg just wants to talk about football. The new St. Louis City SC manager arrives in the midwest to take charge of a team that underwent a fairly remarkable downturn from in 2024. The expansion franchise enjoyed arguably the best first regular season in league history in 2023, topping the Western Conference — a smartly constructed roster pieced together by former Hoffenheim Head Scout Lutz Pfannenstiel rolling through the summer months.

They went the opposite way the year after, and finished 12th in the West – 16 points out of the final playoff spot. Bradley Carnell was dismissed halfway through the campaign. The critics were vocal. Was that first season – that ended with a first-round playoff loss – just a fluke? Was this team really midtable all along, and riding its luck, backed by the pulse of a new town?

Soccer, it turns out, is more complex than that. But change was needed in some way. And Mellberg is the man charged with turning this all around. Sit down with him, and the laser focus of a man who, again, just wants to talk about football, shines through. It might just be a good start.

"I'm an attack-minded coach that likes to be in control of games, which means organization defensively, and balance in transition," Mellberg told GOAL at MLS media day.

Get the MLS Season Pass today!Stream games nowGettyRallying a team

St. Louis' early success can really be tracked back to one signing. Roman Burki has been here since the beginning. The former Borussia Dortmund goalkeeper was one of the expansion franchise's first arrivals. Some teams might have chased down European royalty, or gone for a star. Instead, the club went for a fringe Swiss international, the wrong side of 30, and made him their highest paid player. It seemed, at the time, a puzzling move.

But it worked a charm. Burki was named club captain in February 2023 and was named MLS goalkeeper of the year in his first season in the league.

Then, things turned south. It wasn't necessarily that Burki's individual levels dropped in 2024. Look at the stats – save percentage, post shot expected goals allowed, clean sheets – and everything suggested that this was mostly the same player. The issue was what was happening in front of him. St. Louis conceded 45 goals in their first season in the league. The year after, that spiked to 63.

Meanwhile, they scored 12 fewer goals. It's not hard to see, statistically at least, how the team fell so far, so fast. It got so bad, in fact, that head coach Carnell was dismissed in early July. Six new faces came in during the summer months. In effect, they started an offseason rebuild four months early. For Burki, reversing some of the fortunes is simple.

"We need to trust the coach's plan, invest a lot of time and energy in training every day to try and get better," Burki told GOAL.

AdvertisementGettyMellberg and his style

And that's where Mellberg comes in. Interim coach John Hackworth was rumored to be among the frontrunners for the job. But instead, Pfannenstiel looked abroad. The former Aston Villa man has quietly made a solid managerial career for himself in Swedish football. He has two league titles with Brommapojkarna and a promotion to his name. At one point, he was reportedly in the running for the Swedish national team job.

But St. Louis, and its roster constructed ideally for his possession-heavy style of soccer, was too good of an opportunity to turn down.

"Most of my teams have had more possession than the opponents," Mellberg said. "You can dominate games without having the ball as well. But I really like to be structured and organized."

More broadly, though, he wants his team to put in the legwork that he felt was lacking at times over the course of the 2024 season.

"I see a lot of qualities in the team. I think we can be really hard-working," Mellberg continued.

That would seem to add up. Former manager Carnell was something of a curious choice. Here was a Red Bull school protege, raised on the German school of Geggenpressing, asking a technical team to be ferociously direct. Mellberg, who is far happier to slow the game down, organize off the ball, and create with it, appears a far more natural fit.

"He had success at his previous clubs, otherwise he wouldn't be here," Burki said.

Getty Images SportThe glaring weakness

For Mellberg, the real weakness in last year's squad wasn't the spike in goals conceded or dip in goals scored. It wasn't weaknesses at center back or No. 6. Rather, it was St. Louis' miserable away form. At home, they were 7-5-5, picking up 26 points. On the road, the numbers make for miserable reading: just one win, eight draws, and eight losses. Eleven points total. They were last in MLS in away wins.

It should be emphasized that this isn't a St. Louis-specific issue. MLS, historically, is a tough place to pick up points away from home. LA Galaxy, eventual champions, picked up 42 points at home and just 22 away. It's what made Inter Miami so good – they had a perfect 37-37 split en route to a Supporters' Shield win.

Mellberg wants to reverse that trend in his new job.

"We need to do better away from home. Most teams are really, really strong at home but have poor away records. We are definitely one of them," he said.

There is no easy solution here, he admitted.

"For me, it's about style of play. It's important to have good organization. We are a team with physicality, and endurance, which I think is important away from home," Mellberg said.

IMAGNConnecting with the fans

In all likelihood, Mellberg won't have much problem with the home fans. Drive around St. Louis, and the pulse of this club is everywhere. There are pink stickers on cars, banners up in bars, and jerseys spotted around shopping malls and restaurants. The club, before its first year, lobbied hard for the city being a soccer stronghold. The 22,000 fans that regularly pack Energizer Park – flares, tifos, and all – have backed up that message in full.

Mellberg believes that his style of football can mesh well with that passion.

"It's the identity of St. Louis: hard working, energy, intensity. Those are qualities we can see more of," he said.

And perhaps more importantly, Mellberg sees a real opportunity here. Despite St. Louis's poor 2024 campaign, the summer retool has given him some real quality to work with. Burki is set to stick around. Burki, Cedric Teuchert, and Marcel Hartel can all be difference-makers. Meanwhile, Mellberg insists that the inherent chaos of the league can only benefit the team.

"I watched a lot from last season, and it's not like a few teams stand out, and that we have no chance against them. It feels like anyone can beat anyone," he said.

A return to the top of the Western Conference is admittedly unlikely. LA Galaxy, LAFC, Real Salt Lake and Seattle Sounders will be as good – if not better – than last year. But St. Louis is better than its 12th-placed finish. And with a new manager at the helm – one who there's a real buzz again.

"For sure playoffs is the goal of the season," Mellberg said. "And we take it from there."
