  • WHAT HAPPENED?

With Van Persie's Heerenveen 2-1 up with two minutes remaining, the visitors brought on Ryan Fosso and Jasper Dahlhaus for Darijo Grujcic and Owen Johnson. However, Dahlhaus stayed on the pitch for nearly a minute before the ex-Manchester United and Arsenal striker notified the officials of their mistake. A minute later, the 11 men of Fortuna equalised to snatch the three points from Van Persie's team. Naturally, he was livid at full-time.

    WHAT ROBIN VAN PERSIE SAID

He said, via ESPN: "I find what preceded that goal very special. Fortuna Sittard had 12 men on the field for a minute before that throw-in. Apparently that is allowed and possible. You can't imagine that? That it is simply allowed. Normally I never talk to referees and always let them do their job, but it can't be that they play with 12 men. That's unthinkable. So I asked the fourth official: 'Shouldn't you do something about that?'"

When asked what he'd like to see done, Van Persie mused: "For example, reverse that goal. You can't play with twelve men against eleven. I really can't understand that. I think this is really scandalous."

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

The result means eighth-positioned Fortuna stay one point and two places ahead of Heerenveen, but if they had held on for the win, they would have leapfrogged their opponents in the Eredivisie. Moreover, they would have been 10 points clear of the relegation zone. This is another bad day for putting your trust in referees and matchday officials.

After Ruud: Man Utd hold talks for Ten Hag upgrade who once rejected Fergie

And so it is finally over, Erik ten Hag is no longer Manchester United manager.

It has been a simply disastrous start to the 2024/25 season for the club. The Red Devils are stumbling in the Premier League and Europa League and are struggling to win a game. They currently find themselves 14th in the Premier League, with just 11 points to their name so far.

The Red Devils, who won the FA Cup last season, will be hoping they can turn this torrid form around soon with Ruud van Nistelrooy now at the helm on an interim basis.

The iconic Dutchman – or whoever ends up being the new permanent appointment – certainly has their work cut out…

United’s underlying stats in the 2024/25 Premier League

Perhaps the most striking stat for United so far this term is the fact they have won just four games in all competitions in the entire season, having played 14 times. Those victories have come against Fulham on the opening day of the season, Premier League strugglers Southampton, League One outfit Barnsley and, most recently, Brentford.

One issue the Red Devils have had this season is scoring goals. They are the second-lowest scorers in the division this season, with just eight goals to their name. As per Understat, the Red Devils have an expected goals tally of 15.65xG, although that still places them 11th in the xG table.

Whilst they have conceded 11 times so far in the Premier League, they are worryingly 15th for expected goals against. United’s current tally stands at 17.52xGA, with four of the five sides who have a worse number in that metric sitting below them in the Premier League.

Unsurprisingly, those woes have resulted in the end for Ten Hag, given how badly the side are performing this season. Rumours have been swirling about who could replace the Dutchman, including one manager who is a legend of the game.

The manager who could replace Ten Hag

The manager in question here is former Barcelona boss Xavi. The legendary midfielder recently left his post at the helm of the La Liga giants, who are now flying high under Hansi Flick. According to a report from Sacha Tavolieri, the Spaniard is a ‘concrete lead to succeed’ the Dutchman and is having talks with club officials.

Indeed, the 44-year-old has a strong record as Barca manager despite the fact he left the club at the end of last season. In 143 matches that he coached his former side, Xavi oversaw 91 wins, and just 23 draws and 29 losses. His side managed to score 280 goals under him in that time.

Interestingly, the Spaniard, who won the World Cup and two European Championships with his nation, was once a target for United as a player. He explained that the club “approached me once through Sir Alex Ferguson’s brother”, although he rejected the offer in favour of Barcelona.

In terms of his style of play, Xavi favours a direct 4-3-3 formation, taking inspiration from the legendary sides he featured in as a player, with intricate, one-touch passing moves and plenty of underlaps from midfield. One of his best wins as Barca boss was a 3-1 victory over Real Madrid in the Supercup in 2023.

Xavi could also be the perfect manager for United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo. The 19-year-old has become a key player for his boyhood club over the past 12 months and is one of England’s most talented young midfielders. He already has 44 senior appearances for the Red Devils under his belt.

Learning from one of the greatest midfielders of all time would be huge for the England international’s development. During his time at Barca, he developed La Masia graduates Pedri and Gavi into two world-renowned midfielders.

With a brilliant track record of developing young midfielders, Mainoo could take his game to the next level under Xavi, learning new intricacies to further develop his game. It could be a match made in heaven.

Xavi could then represent the dream upgrade on Ten Hag, having averaged 2.07 points per game during his time at Camp Nou, while the now ex-United boss finished with a record of just 1.84 points per game from his 128 matches at the helm.

Not only does Xavi give young players a chance, exactly what United stands for, but his style of play could fit the squad well. It might end up being the dream appointment for the Red Devils as they look to save their season, with the club once again chasing a new permanent manager in this turbulent post-Ferguson era.

Azeem Rafiq racism report: Yorkshire chairman Roger Hutton to be called before DCMS select committee

Yorkshire’s handling of the investigation into allegations of institutional racism by Azeem Rafiq will face further parliamentary scrutiny with the news that Roger Hutton, the club’s chairman, is to be called before the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) select committee.Yorkshire announced last week that they would be taking no further action against any current employees, players or executives, after reviewing the report produced by an independent panel. The ECB, however, has promised to consider the “many serious allegations” contained in the report, after receiving a copy. ESPNcricinfo revealed on Monday that despite a Yorkshire player admitting to use of the word “P**i” when referring to Rafiq, it was excused by the panel on the basis that it was “banter”.In response, the health secretary, Sajid Javid, tweeted that “P**i is not banter”, adding that “heads should roll at Yorkshire”.Julian Knight, the DCMS select committee chair, said in a statement to the Press Association that Hutton would be called “to give a much fuller explanation than we have had so far”. Knight previously wrote to Yorkshire urging them to publish the report in full – something the club have so far resisted doing so on the grounds of privacy and defamation.Related

  • Yorkshire racism report ruled Rafiq being called 'P**i' was 'banter'

“This is extremely concerning and it’s clear that Yorkshire County Cricket Club has questions to answer,” Knight said in response to the latest allegations. “We have monitored developments around the club’s handling of the serious allegations made by Azeem Rafiq.”We want to see much greater transparency from YCCC – it is time for them to answer their critics. We intend to call the chair of the club before the DCMS Committee to give a much fuller explanation than we have had so far.”Yorkshire admitted in September that Rafiq was “a victim of racial harassment” during his time at the club, upholding seven of 43 allegations made by the former allrounder.

But after the club released a statement saying they were “pleased” to announce their response to the report – which included the conclusion that no disciplinary action was warranted – Rafiq condemned the developments as “embarrassing”.Meanwhile, the ground sponsor at Headingley, Emerald Publishing, has added to the pressure on Yorkshire by saying “there is clearly still a great deal more to do” and that it would be seeking a response from the club.”We take all matters related to any form of racism or discriminatory behaviour seriously and expect all our partners to uphold our values,” Emerald said in a statement to PA. “As sponsors of the Headingley stadium, we are dismayed by the conclusion of an independent panel that the former player, Azeem Rafiq, suffered racial harassment and bullying during his time at the club.”Whilst the club has offered its unreserved apology for this, and has made a number of positive changes in the intervening years, there is clearly still a great deal more to do. We are pursuing the actions from the YCCC in response to their latest statement and will continue to review the findings from the tribunal and ECB investigation in due course.”

Glenn Maxwell heads into T20 World Cup on the crest of a wave

The allrounder has a calmness about his game: “I’m not overthinking stuff…it’s all automatic”

Alex Malcolm20-Oct-20213:11

What’s behind Glenn Maxwell’s incredible six-hitting ability?

Even geniuses need reassurance from time to time. For Glenn Maxwell that came during the most recent IPL, in part because his genius was not only recognised but genuinely appreciated by two of the game’s greats in Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers.”I was extremely fortunate to have two of the greats of the game in the same team and in the same batting line-up who were open to share their experiences and talk to me about their game,” Maxwell said. “It makes you feel 10 feet tall when you’ve got their backing and they’re watching you, they’re asking you questions and it just makes you feel confident, it makes you feel happy.”Maxwell was a revelation for RCB producing one of his best IPL tournaments following some lean runs in previous editions. He made 513 runs at a strike-rate of 144.10 with six half-centuries in 14 innings after scoring just 108 runs from 11 innings for Punjab Kings last season at a strike-rate of 101.88. He had the second highest strike-rate against spin and was ESPNcricinfo’s Smart Stats batting MVP.Royal Challengers Bangalore assistant coach Adam Griffith told ESPNcricinfo that those conversations with Kohli and de Villiers were on another level.Related

Maxwell's middle-overs maturity redefines RCB's success

“When you see the best in the world when they’re together, it’s amazing the conversations they have and they’re on a different level,” Griffith said. “The type of conversation is different to a normal player. They move past the basics of the game to those extra little one or two-percent things that can mean the difference between having a good innings or not. The way they talk about the game, it’s great to sit and watch them.”Now Maxwell’s challenge is to try and translate that form into World Cup success for Australia. There is a huge burden of expectation externally on Maxwell’s shoulders, but the man himself has a calmness and clarity about his upcoming role.”I’m not overthinking stuff once I get in-game,” he said. “It’s all automatic. I’m trying to play against the conditions and the opposition and that’s all I’m thinking about. It’s not [a case of] if I play well, we’re going to win a World Cup. There’s no thoughts of that. It’s just if I’m in a contest, I’ll give my best on the day, and then I’m sure that will be a positive impact on the team.”His ability to read the conditions so quickly in the difficult middle overs role was what impressed RCB the most. Maxwell has an excellent record in T20 cricket in the UAE with eight half-centuries in 31 innings at a strike-rate of 146.26. He will be set to bat No. 4 for Australia, or more specifically post the powerplay as he did for RCB, and will be pivotal to Australia’s chances. Maxwell said the key to that role in the UAE was taking the time in the middle to understand how each surface in the UAE was playing.Glenn Maxwell fed off AB de Villiers and Virat Kohli•BCCI”I think it just takes a little bit more time to soak in a bit of information. I think you can get to Australia and bat in that time [the middle overs], and you can probably go a lot earlier, you can try and hit boundaries a lot earlier. It just takes like a few extra balls to actually get used to what’s facing you out there. I think having spent a fair bit of time in the middle over the last month and a bit has really helped me sort of start to get used to that and get used to the pace of the game and pace the wickets.”RCB also gave him a leadership role. Having thrived in the captaincy role at Melbourne Stars, RCB were keen to utilise his experience in the field.”Having a bit of responsibility around the group out in the field and he’d speak really well in team meetings,” Griffith said. “Giving him that responsibility to lead different parts of the group fielding positions and making sure everyone’s where they need to be, driving that intensity in the field is a big one for him as well and I think his preparation was great.”Maxwell also played his part with the ball in the IPL after doing a lot of technical work on his bowling with both Craig Howard in Victoria during his off-season, and RCB and Australia spin coach Sridharan Sriram, particularly on bowling to right-handers.”We actually had a bit of a joke that he bowled over the wicket to a right-hander for the first time in a couple of years this tournament,” Griffith said. “That just shows you the confidence he’s got in his bowling at the moment. He’s getting up and over and bowling proper offspinners instead of coming round-arm around the wicket and slinging that ball in a fast and flat. He’s in a pretty good space.”Maxwell wants to give Australia captain Aaron Finch another versatile spinning option alongside Ashton Agar and Adam Zampa, rather than just a specific match-up for left-handers only.”I think the biggest thing for me first and foremost is to be able to bowl not just to left-handers but to be able to bowl to right-handers and not have to, I suppose, worry about two right-handers being out there,” Maxwell said. “Still be able to close down one side the ground and an offer Finchy an extra option. I suppose that’s the biggest thing I’ve been working really hard on, bowling from over the wicket and being able to attack right-handed batters and it feels like it’s going really well.”

Virat Kohli: 'I will be batting at three'

“Things were different before IPL started and now KL Rahul is playing the way he is, so it’s very hard to look past him at top of the order.”

Virat Kohli has indicated that he will bat at No. 3 during the T20 World Cup, reversing his desire to open with Rohit Sharma, which he expressed during the home T20 series against England in March. Speaking on Monday at the toss ahead of India’s first warm-up match against England, Kohli said KL Rahul’s commanding form in the IPL was so compelling that he was the best choice to be Rohit’s opening partner.”Things were different before IPL started and now KL Rahul is playing the way he is, so it’s very hard to look past him at top of the order,” Kohli said. “Rohit is a no-brainer. He has been a world-class player right at the top of the order for us. I will be batting at three.”In the 16 matches he has played at the previous three T20 World Cups, Kohli has always batted at No. 3. Kohli was the highest run-getter in the 2014 edition of the tournament, and the second-highest in 2016.But in March, after India’s emphatic win in the fifth T20I against England, Kohli said he would “like to partner” with Rohit because of the potential “damage” each batter was capable of causing once set.The 94-run opening partnership between Rohit and Kohli was the scaffolding on which India built the win, with the captain batting through the innings and scoring an unbeaten 52-ball 80. Rahul was dropped for the final T20I after scoring just 15 runs in the first four games, including two ducks.KL Rahul is set to reclaim his opening slot after finishing the IPL as its third-highest run-getter•Cricket Australia via Getty Images

That was only the seventh occasion on which Kohli opened for India in T20Is, but he said he would open for the Royal Challengers Bangalore in the IPL to prepare for the World Cup. Kohli finished this IPL with 405 runs at a strike rate of 119.46 and an average of 28.92.In 16 T20 games this year, including 15 in the IPL, Kohli has opened the batting and managed strike rates of 129.00 in the powerplay and 112.57 in the middle overs. The middle-overs strike rate is the lowest among Indian batters who have batted five or more times this year.In contrast Rahul, leading Punjab Kings, once again finished among the IPL’s most prolific batters, finishing as the third-highest runmaker with 626 runs. Although the Kings failed to make the play-offs, Rahul ended the tournament with a spectacular, unbeaten 42-ball 98 against eventual champions Chennai Super Kings, one of the innings of the tournament.Since 2018, Rahul has been the highest run-getter in the IPL with 2548 runs, winning the Orange Cap (most runs) in the 2020 edition. While announcing the India 15 for the World Cup, Chetan Sharma, India’s chief selector, had nominated Rohit and Rahul as the first-choice openers with Ishan Kishan as the back-up, without naming Kohli. Against England in the warm-up game, both Rahul and Kishan were part of the playing XI with Rohit resting. This World Cup is Kohli’s final assignment as India’s T20I captain after he announced recently that he would step down from the leadership position in the shortest format. Kohl said India were “pretty sorted” about their planning ahead of the first match in the tournament, on October 24 in Dubai against Pakistan.

Chelsea once thought they had Hazard 2.0, but then he was sold for £3.5m

Eden Hazard might not have forged the career for himself over in Spain that all across the footballing landscape envisaged when he left Chelsea, but the west London club will forever remember their magician for his brilliance in the Premier League.

That’s how his football should be remembered. Awe-inspiring and ethereal, gliding through opponents with a balletic grace that few, such a scant few, have ever been able to produce. Lionel Messi is one of them, Diego Maradona another.

Hazard painted the Premier League with tricks and skills, goals and assists. His was a skillset that will forever imbue the Stamford Bridge pitch with his presence.

Chelsea needed to replace him after his £130m transfer to Real Madrid. An unenviable task. Luckily, they had a transfer ban and, thus, couldn’t.

When Chelsea sold Eden Hazard

That’s facetious, of course, but perhaps Chelsea’s inability to replace Hazard prevented them from splurging on any old player and instead allowed for a more calculated approach.

Maybe not, but say what you want, the likes of Timo Werner and Kai Havertz played vital roles in winning the Champions League, which is no small feat to be sure.

Hazard scored 110 goals and supplied 85 assists across 352 appearances for Chelsea, winning two Premier League and Europa League titles, the FA Cup and the League Cup, as well as being crowned the PFA Premier League Player of the Year for the 2014/15 campaign.

Chelsea might not have been able to replace their Belgian wizard externally, but they did have an internal option in Callum Hudson-Odoi who had been proclaimed Hazard’s second coming.

Callum Hudson-Odoi was supposed to be the next Hazard

In May 2019, former Chelsea defender David Luiz stated that Hudson-Odoi “has the talent one day to be like Eden”.

What praise, what confidence. It’s the kind of double-edged effusion that can hamper an up-and-coming prospect. Hudson-Odoi was indeed an electrifying talent when bursting onto the scene with Chelsea but he shouldered quite the burden, his rise coinciding with Hazard’s exit.

The English winger featured 126 times for Chelsea, scoring 16 goals and adding 21 assists, in an impressive start to life as a senior, his fleet-footed, dynamic ability translating seamlessly from the youth stage.

The bleak truth is that the 23-year-old suffered a knee injury toward the end of the 2018/19 season that severely disrupted his progress. It’s an unfortunate tale of setbacks that ultimately proved his undoing at Stamford Bridge, with his petered-out finish to life in London leading to a £3.5m sale to Nottingham Forest in 2023.

First Impressions

What did pundits and fans alike think about their new star signing when they arrived? Football FanCast's 'First Impressions' series has everything you need.

It’s all the more poignant when considering Bayern Munich once wanted his signature and had even seen a £70m bid rejected by the Blues for his signing in 2020, which seems remarkable in hindsight.

Few Blues fans (even considering that celebration) will be unhappy to see him doing well after a testing start to life as a professional, but the fact that he was cashed in for a paltry return merely emphasises what might have been, the perfect homegrown Hazard successor to fire Chelsea back to the top.

Nottingham Forest player Callum Hudson-Odoi

Hudson-Odoi was clearly one of the finest young talents that English football had to offer, but despite being the jewel of Cobham’s packed academy, fell heavily by the wayside.

He’s resurrected his Premier League career with Forest, but, frankly, it doesn’t look likely that he will capture and sustain the form that would put him back into conversations concerning Hazard-esque quality.

Darren Bent criticises Arsenal star who lost the ball 18 times against PSG

TalkSPORT pundit Darren Bent has shared a head-turning verdict after Arsenal secured a vital 2-0 win over Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League on Tuesday.

Manager Mikel Arteta was a delighted man at the full-time whistle as his Gunners side put in an imposing, fierce display against the Ligue 1 champions last night – particularly in the first half.

The north Londoners dominated the early stages on home turf, with superstar winger Bukayo Saka threatening early and fizzling a curling shot just over Gianluigi Donnarumma’s right-hand top corner post.

It was a sign of things to come, and it didn’t take long for the score to open. Arsenal looked to press home their domination and found a breakthrough when Leandro Trossard cut inside with a looping cross for Kai Havertz, who towered above Donnarumma and nodded his side into the lead.

Thereafter, Arteta’s men continued to knock on the door, with Saka then getting on the scoresheet to make it 2-0 – as his tame free-kick somehow found its way through a number of bodies and beyond Donnarumma into the bottom corner.

Havertz really should have made it 3-0 in the second half – having missed a gaping free header inside the area – before Gabriel Martinelli forced Donnarumma into a save down to his left 15 minutes from the full-time whistle.

It was a convincing display by Arsenal against Luis Enrique’s side, with Thomas Partey also impressing with a tenacious performance in midfield. Arteta, speaking after his side’s win, heaped praise on his team for managing the game well.

“The way we played the first half and how determined and brave we were,” said Arteta after Arsenal’s win over PSG.

“The quality we showed again against this kind of opponent and be so dominant, score the two goals. Then we wanted that different second half probably, continue to be that dominant and with the ball to be more composed than we were. We had three big chances to score the third one, and probably that would’ve killed the game, it didn’t. Credit to them as well, the changes they made, the adaptation that they made, they forced us to play again in a different area of the pitch and we had more problems after and to continue to play the way we played in the first half.”

Darren Bent criticises Bukayo Saka after Arsenal win over PSG

Speaking on talkSPORT, pundit Bent reacted to the clash and suggested that Saka underperformed despite his goal.

Indeed, Bent claimed that Saka was “on the fringes” against PSG, and says he’s watched the England international put in much better performances.

“I thought he [Trossard] played really well today,” said Bent on talkSPORT (via TBR).

“Saka got the assist in the first half. I thought he was kind of on the fringes, I have seen him play better.”

According to SofaScore, the 23-year-old was Arsenal’s second-best performer behind Havertz – managing 59 touches, a key pass and of course getting on the scoresheet, although he did lose possession 18 times in total.

The numbers tell a contrary story to Bent’s, but that again shows the real difference between statistics and people’s opinions on the eye.

Rahmanullah Gurbaz brings holiday fireworks as Delhi Bulls clinch top-two spot

It’s tough to think of a more exciting and promising young batter in world cricket right now than Rahmanullah Gurbaz. With the IPL auction a month or so away, Gurbaz has gone about executing his audition in style at the Abu Dhabi T10.A night after hitting the fastest fifty of the tournament with a quite stunning 14-ball effort, the baby-faced Afghanistan international smashed 69 off just 29 deliveries to remarkably drag Delhi Bulls into the top two and into a straight qualifier for the final against Deccan Gladiators on Friday. In a tournament with renowned hitters of a cricket ball from across the globe, it is the emergence of Gurbaz that has lit up the competition. He stands clear at the top of the runs and boundaries leaderboard with 310 runs and 50 boundariesIn so many ways, Gurbaz embodies the term “the exuberance of youth” beautifully, with his fearlessness and the genuine 360-degree game – something that doesn’t come as a surprise, given that AB de Villiers is his idol. Mind you, here is a talent who hit a scintillating century on his ODI debut for Afghanistan at the very same ground in January. Eleven months on and there isn’t a more thrilling prospect across the cricketing globe. The 50th National Day of the UAE has signalled a long holiday weekend in Abu Dhabi, which has been filled with a frenzy of celebrations thus far. A week ago, as he blasted a devastating 70 in a 116-run partnership with Luke Wright, Gurbaz spoke about how his confidence increased when there was experience alongside him.He didn’t need experience by his side on this occasion. This was a man showcasing to the world what he was all about. That trust in his own ability. That decisiveness in his decision making. The execution of the shots themselves.Put into bat by Liam Livingstone, Gurbaz carried on from where left off the night before, effortlessly cutting a wide delivery from Sheldon Cottrell first up for four. Livingstone brought himself on to try to break the partnership. Instead, Gurbaz gave the England allrounder a taste of his own medicine to audaciously send him for consecutive maximums. By now, he was putting on a show.Rutherford belted Naveen-ul-Haq for three sixes in an over, before Gurbaz reached a second half-century in as many nights, gloriously dispatching his countryman over extra-cover for six.
