Saved by Bogle & Piroe: Farke has to ditch 5/10 Leeds man who’s ‘not sharp’

Leeds United closed the gap on leaders Sunderland to just two points at the top of the Championship table, following Saturday’s deserved 2-0 victory over a struggling Queen’s Park Rangers side at Elland Road.

It wasn’t all plain-sailing for Daniel Farke’s men – with it taking until the 95th minute for the victory to truly be sealed – yet the Yorkshire side’s quality simply shone through in the end, having bounced back impressively following the midweek defeat to Millwall.

Goals from Jayden Bogle and Joel Piroe proved the difference in the end, with the Whites heading into the international break in a strong position in their desperate pursuit of automatic promotion.

With a two-week break now on the cards, Farke can reflect on this latest showing, with a number of performances – both good and bad – having given the German plenty of food for thought moving forward.

Leeds' best performers vs QPR

A word must, of course, be said for the man who opened the scoring, with Bogle firing home off the crossbar following a chaotic, penalty box scramble after just 19 minutes.

Jayden Bogle

That early strike set the tone for who was a standout, all-round display for the former Sheffield United man, as he provided a real outlet in his advanced, right-back berth, having also provided three key passes and completed five of his seven attempted dribbles, while winning eight ground duels to boot, as per Sofascore.

Elsewhere, it proved another fine day in the midfield ranks for the pairing of Ao Tanaka and Joe Rothwell, with the duo both taking over 90 touches of the ball as they sought to dictate proceedings, while also enjoying a 94% and 93% pass accuracy rate, respectively.

While things didn’t quite click into gear ahead of those two new arrivals, the aforementioned Piroe did make the most of his late cameo after producing a delightful, poked finish past the onrushing Paul Nardi – the Dutchman taking his tally to six for the season in the second tier.

For all those positives, however, one player who deserves to come under the microscope is Manor Solomon, with the on-loan winger again flattering to deceive down the left.

Leeds' worst performer vs QPR

Aside from a brief spell at Fulham in which he once scored in five successive games for the Cottagers while on loan from Shakhtar Donetsk, life in English football hasn’t been particularly kind to the Israeli international so far.

After a season wrecked by injury at Tottenham Hotspur in 2023/24 – in which he was restricted to just six appearances under Ange Postecoglou – the 25-year-old has since endured a mixed beginning in Yorkshire, with just one assist to show for his efforts.

Again, a hamstring injury earlier in the campaign may have been a factor in his lowly return, yet as CBS’ Jake Winderman stated, the diminutive talent simply “does not look sharp”, whether he is carrying an injury or not.

Perhaps, Farke and co will be questioning the wisdom of bringing in the winger on a temporary basis from Spurs, with it having been yet another ineffectual attacking display, as he failed to provide a single key pass, while also failing to successfully complete a single dribble.

The struggling star did enjoy a 94% pass accuracy prior to being replaced by Daniel James in the closing stages, although he also lost the ball on nine occasions from his 45 touches, with Leeds Live’s Beren Cross – who awarded him a 5/10 match rating – writing that he ‘did not do a huge amount to hurt QPR’.

There was, of course, his well-taken strike that was ultimately disallowed for offside, yet Solomon seemingly did not do enough to warrant keeping his starting berth ahead of that man James.

In truth, his performance may be somewhat overshadowed by the eventual scoreline and heroics of Bogle and Piroe, but that’s not to say he shouldn’t still find himself out of the starting lineup for the trip to Swansea City on 24 November.

Pakistan vs Australia key match-ups: Babar vs Hazlewood, short ball vs Smith, Shaheen Shah Afridi vs everyone

What are some of the contests that could decide the outcome of the Test series?

Andrew McGlashan02-Mar-2022Shaheen Shah Afridi vs everyoneHasan Ali has an injury. Haris Rauf has Covid. Shaheen Shah Afridi was vital to Pakistan’s chances anyway, but that has only increased in recent days. It is remarkable to think he is still only 21. He was the leading quick bowler in Test cricket during 2021 with 47 wickets at 17.06. Australia had a brief taste of his rapid, late swing during the T20 World Cup – albeit with the white ball – when a stunning opening over removed Aaron Finch and very nearly Mitchell Marsh although they, and more specifically, Matthew Wade had the final say. In these Tests, his early duels with David Warner could be key: Afridi averages 18.34 against left handers. Warner has a phenomenal record against Pakistan (he averages 108.40) and was savage on them during the 2019-2020 series in Australia but Afridi has grown over those intervening two years. The issue for Pakistan will be that it can’t be all on Afridi’s shoulders.Related

'It's about ticking off facing pace bowling' – Steven Smith prepares for recovery from concussion

Haris Rauf ruled out of first Test against Australia after testing positive for Covid-19

Cameron Green's international education gets first overseas test

Can the short ball work to Smith? The last time Australia played overseas during the 2019 Ashes, Steven Smith produced one of the finest series of all time with 774 runs at 110.57. Since then, however, he has averaged 36.86 from 14 Tests with just a single century against India. Some of that has been attributed to the sickening blow he took from Jofra Archer at Lord’s, although he made a double century on his return from concussion. There has certainly been a concerted approach to bowl short at the body since then – a tactic well-executed by Neil Wagner in 2019-2020 – which has also kept his scoring rate down. Since October 1, 2019, Smith has fallen 10 times to deliveries logged as short-of-a-good-length or short in ESPNcricinfo’s data. However, there have been other plans that have worked well, too, including R Ashwin’s approach and a heavy leg-side field set by India. Afridi has the pace to potentially trouble Smith with the short delivery, but Pakistan will have to be wary of bowling him into the ground and the likelihood of playing three quicks (more on the balance of the side below) may also limit being able to have operate in lengthy short-ball spells.Mohammad Rizwan could be important against Nathan Lyon•Getty Images/AFPBabar Azam vs Josh HazlewoodBabar Azam is a wonderful batter, but few have troubled him like Josh Hazlewood who has claimed him six times (the next most is three dismissals to the same bowler). It does need noting that four of those came early in Babar’s career on the 2016-17 tour of Australia and on the previous tour in 2019-2020 he left a mark with a century in Brisbane and 97 in Adelaide although Hazlewood removed him twice. Australia always target the opposition captain and if Hazlewood can keep a hold over Babar it could be a major factor in the series. Although Babar has remained a consistent run-scorer in recent times, it is 11 Tests since he has scored a century. Hazlewood is not actually an incumbent in the side after missing most of the Ashes with a side strain but it would be a huge surprise if he did not return. The approach against Nathan LyonOne of the big decisions Australia need to make is around the balance of their attack. It would seem likely that Nathan Lyon will be lone the specialist spinner for the first Test at least and how Pakistan go about playing him could be a key feature. Although Australia now have the benefit of a five-strong attack with Cameron Green, there will likely be occasions when Pat Cummins will want to lock Lyon in from one end. Two important figures in Pakistan’s batting order in this regard will be Fawad Alam and Mohammad Rizwan who are both excellent players of spin. Fawad’s Test career is remarkable in many ways with an 11-year gap shortly after a century on debut and now he has five hundreds in just 15 matches. Rizwan, meanwhile, has only been dismissed once by a spinner in Test cricket.Australia’s all-round advantageThe injury to Faheem Ashraf removes one of the key match-ups, at least for the first Test, with Green and leaves Australia with a much stronger all-round option to balance their side. Pakistan have called up Iftikhar Ahmed, who has played three Tests, and the uncapped Mohammad Wasim jnr, but neither have the pedigree of Ashraf who averages 35.11 with the bat and can both chip in with wickets and take pressure off the specialist bowlers. This is Green’s first international series overseas but he comes off an Ashes where his bowling came to the fore and then he found form with the bat in the latter stages.

Recalled opener Imam-ul-Haq justified his selection in style with a brilliant maiden Test century to lead a disciplined Pakistan into early control of the series opener, as Australia’s pace-heavy attack toiled in batting-friendly conditions in Rawalpindi.Getting the nod over Shan Masood in a seemingly borderline call, Imam made a statement and signified a calculated Pakistan batting effort after the hosts won a crucial toss and elected to bat on a flat pitch. An indefatigable Imam, nephew of Pakistan great Inzamam-ul-Haq, batted through the opening day and finished with 132 off 271 balls while veteran Azhar Ali was unbeaten on 64 from 165 balls.Imam started cautiously with just seven runs off his first 41 balls but crucially blunted a full-strength Australian attack featuring star quick Josh Hazlewood in place of cult favourite Scott Boland, who could consider himself unlucky after snaring 18 wickets at just 9.55 in his first three Tests.Imam showcased a stout defence but he mixed stonewalling with spurts of counterattacking, highlighted by terrific use of the feet to superbly hit spinner Nathan Lyon down the ground on several occasions.Related

'The excitement is very telling' – cricket boards, ICC and ACA rally behind Australia's historic tour of Pakistan

The left-handed Imam shared in a century opening stand with Abdullah Shafique, who lost his composure on the stroke of lunch and holed out tamely off Lyon on 44. It was the first opening century stand against Australia since Imam and Mohammed Hafeez combined for 205 in Dubai in 2018.But Imam then found support over the next two sessions through Azhar as Pakistan aimed to wear down Australia, who have had no warm-up matches on their first Test tour since the Ashes in 2019.Eight bowlers rolled their arm over for Australia but no one could pierce the defences of Imam, who entered the final session on 92. He started slowly after tea and became mired in the 90s as Australia sensed an opening. He didn’t necessarily look nervous, however, as a composed Imam resisted tempting wider deliveries from quick Mitchell Starc until flashing and missing at a loose ball on 97.But on the very next delivery, he punched through the off-side for a boundary to trigger memorable celebrations, as he jumped for joy and punched the air amid jubilation in the terraces. Enduring a barren run over 11 previous Tests stretching four years, Imam notched his ton off 200 balls and showed no let up after that as Pakistan eyed a huge first innings score. In their first Test in Pakistan in almost 24 years, Australia tried hard but appeared in need of a second specialist spinner having stuck with their usual balance of three quicks alongside allrounder Cameron Green and sole spinner Lyon.Imam-ul-Haq and Abdullah Shafique provided a century opening stand•AFP/Getty Images

Pat Cummins, in his toughest day as Test captain after a near flawless Ashes, rotated his quicks in short bursts and tried different tactics to no avail. The pacemen started day one bowling a disciplined line and length before reverting later in the morning session to a short ball barrage, which continued after lunch.Surprisingly not used in the first session, Green was finally called upon in the 45th over but could not continue his knack of being a partnership breaker as he demonstrated in the Ashes. With the ball showing signs of reverse swing before tea, Starc tried to conjure his famed full-length firecrackers only for Imam to pounce on overpitched deliveries. He had another late crack with the second new ball, but Australia’s star-studded quicks finished wicketless.Lyon did the heavy lifting to finish with 1 for 87 from 31 overs but he couldn’t produce the same rampant spin as the day wore on. Having not been needed to bowl on the grassy Bellerive Oval in the Ashes finale, Lyon came on in the eighth over and immediately caused trouble to Imam with sharp turn and wicked bounce.Without overlooked legspinner Mitchell Swepson or left-arm orthodox Ashton Agar, Cummins resorted to part-time offspinner Travis Head, who came into the attack in the 17th over but was ineffective in his three-over spell.Late in the day, as the second new ball approached, Cummins utilised legspinners Marnus Labuschagne and Steven Smith but the set batters played sensibly to leave Australia’s skipper out of options and with plenty to ponder overnight as the brains trust may rue not selecting either Swepson or Agar. After rain dented their final chance to acclimatise on Thursday, Australia were thankful they at least toiled in mild conditions around 20 degrees in a far cry from oppressive conditions that often confronts them in Asia.Friday prayers led to a sparse crowd at the start of the historic contest before spectators filled the terraces to near capacity later in the day and a dominant Pakistan gave them plenty to cheer about.

Juventus chief talks to Man City over £60m+ duo possibly moving to Etihad

As Manchester City look to use the January transfer window to reinforce a struggling squad, Juventus chief Cristiano Giantoli reportedly met with the Premier League champions to discuss two players.

Man City transfer news

Six games without victory in all competitions, injuries piling up and fresh from conceding a 3-0 lead and drawing 3-3 against Feyenoord in the Champions League, Manchester City’s blip is quickly turning into a crisis. For the first time in his managerial career, Pep Guardiola looks out of solutions, out of energy and perhaps heading towards the ultimate afternoon to forget against runaway Premier League leaders Liverpool on Sunday.

Whether the blame lies with injuries, the tactical set-up or individual performances, for the first time in what feels like a long time, Manchester City are in desperate need of reinforcements. At the very least, they must find a replacement for the injured Rodri in the January transfer window – something they’ve seemingly discussed.

According to Gazzetta dello Sport, via Sport Witness, Juventus director Giuntoli has held talks with Manchester City over potential deals to send Nicolo Fagioli and Douglas Luiz to the Etihad in permanent deals in the January transfer window.

Pep Guardiola now demands Man City to sign £183,000-a-week trio in January

It comes after another shock result at the Etihad Stadium.

ByBen Browning Nov 28, 2024

The Italian giants reportedly value Fagioli at between €20-25m (£17-21m), whilst valuing Luiz at a hefty €50m (£41m) ahead of the winter window. Two midfielders, City could certainly do with signing such a duo, but it remains to be seen whether those at the Etihad will splash the cash in January or wait until the summer.

Luiz, of course, would be a fitting option, given that he’d be seeking Manchester City redemption after failing to break into Guardiola’s side as a young player. Breaking into the spotlight ever since, Luiz worked his way back to the top at Aston Villa only to now face familiar struggles at Juventus. Possibly in need of a fresh start, the Brazilian could go back to where it first began in England.

"Clever" Luiz could make perfect sense

If Manchester City have the opportunity to reunite with a familiar face to solve their midfield problem, then they should take it with both hands. Luiz previously starred in the Premier League – just last season, in fact – and has already worked under Guardiola. And whilst his Juventus spell hasn’t quite gone to plan, a return to a league he excelled in should only result in a return to form.

Douglas Luiz for Aston Villa

Guardiola, himself, was full of praise for the former Aston Villa man back in 2021, telling reporters as relayed by The Boot Room: “He’s a guy who plays all of the minutes. He’s an important player for Aston Villa. A guy who’s clever with the ball, so physically strong. He’s a lovely, lovely guy.”

City will have to splash out to secure his signature, but in the current climate, the Premier League champions may be left with no choice as their crown continues to slip.

Arteta told that club may let Arsenal sign £60m striker on loan in January

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has been “alerted” that one club may be open to holding transfer talks over their £60 million striker in January, and they could even allow him to leave on a temporary deal in the winter.

Arsenal draw transfer shortlist as Mikel Arteta targets new striker

The Gunners have been repeatedly linked with a new marksman for a couple of seasons now, with the prospect of a prolific number nine arriving at N5 becoming a reoccurring theme.

£239k-per-week forward holds new deal talks as Arsenal look at signing him

The Gunners are reliable contenders to sign him next year.

ByEmilio Galantini Dec 3, 2024

Former sporting director Edu Gaspar attempted to bring in RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko over the summer window, following the 21-year-old’s impressive haul of 18 goals in all competitions last season, but he snubbed Arsenal’s advances in favour of remaining in Germany.

Arsenal could go back in for Sesko next year, if they think the Slovenia international will be available for transfer this time (Ben Jacobs), but he isn’t the only striker on Arteta’s radar heading into 2025.

Newcastle United star Alexander Isak could be subject to an £80 million bid from Arsenal (CaughtOffside), while it is believed that the north Londoners hold an interest in Sporting Lisbon sensation Viktor Gyokeres as well.

Former Premier League chief scout Mick Brown, who remains well-connected within the game, recently told Football Insider that Arsenal are closely monitoring Gyokeres ahead of a potential move – even if he has doubts over whether he’d cut it for a truly elite side.

“He’s a player I like from what I’ve seen of him, and I know some of the top clubs have been interested,” said Brown.

“Arsenal are one club who’ve been closely watching him in Portugal, and Chelsea too, but there are lots of clubs interested if he becomes available.

But I don’t think any clubs would be willing to spend upwards of around £80million on him. It’s a big commitment to a player who, as good as he has been, is playing in a weaker league than the Premier League.

“Even during his time at Coventry, he was a very very good Championship player, but not one you’d say would be a game-changer for a real top side.”

Arteta "alerted" that Brighton could let Arsenal sign Evan Ferguson in January

According to GiveMeSport, another opportunity to shore up their forward options comes in the form of Brighton starlet Evan Ferguson.

Indeed, it is believed Arteta has been “alerted” that Brighton could be open to negotiating a Ferguson loan to Arsenal in January, with the Republic of Ireland international falling behind Danny Welbeck and Joao Pedro in Fabian Hurzeler’s pecking order.

However, the 20-year-old, who commands a £60 million price tag, isn’t somebody who interests the Gunners – with Arteta unlikely to pursue a temporary deal for Ferguson despite being informed that it is an option.

Interestingly, this could disappoint club legend Ian Wright, who heaped praise on the player when Arsenal were linked with him last year.

“When you look at him, the way he plays, his appreciation for the game, his movement and finishing both feet, good in the air and good pace,” said Wright on Premier League productions in 2023.

“He has all the attributes at 18. Very mature in the way he plays. All he has to do is keep doing what he is doing and they are going to start talking about him in million terms because that striker is not allowed. “

‘Like a Hollywood movie’ – Apple TV’s Antonella Gonzalez on interviewing Inter Miami's Lionel Messi, the rise of Latin American influence in MLS, and being a Hispanic woman in broadcasting

The MLS 360 en Espanol host joined Mic'd Up to discuss Messi, Inter Miami and the Latin imprint on the league

When Lionel Messi debuted for Inter Miami in the Leagues Cup in 2023, he came off the bench against Cruz Azul to see the Liga MX side equalize 10 minutes into his first showing for the . Then, with the final touch of the game, the Argentine drilled home a stupendous free kick to lift Miami to victory in the Group Stage of the competition.

Afterward? He gave his first MLS interview with Apple TV to reporter Antonella Gonzalez, who recalls the moment as "life-changing."

"For me, that interview that I did, the first one with Messi was the first interview that he was doing for the media. In the first interview after his debut in Major League Soccer," Gonzalez told GOAL. "Having the opportunity to interview him in the best way possible, because it was like a Hollywood movie that day for me, it was life-changing, and I understood that he is just a guy who wants to keep playing and enjoying the game, and he's really happy right now."

Since then Gonzalez has had a chance to interview the eight-time Ballon d'Or winner multiple times.

"What I can see from right by his side," she says, "is that he doesn't suffer from the ego of being so popular. He just wants to keep playing, and he's just a really good guy."

Watching him grow with the South Beach club has been a joy, but his influence on the league and Latin-American culture in MLS may be what his true legacy.

"I have to say that he's a little kid playing and enjoying the game," she says. "That is what I can see when I am right by his side as a sideline reporter. When he's on the bench, when he's not In the starting XI, he's just watching the game like he is as excited as a little kid."

As a reporter for MLS 360 en Espanol, Gonzalez has experience covering the game through a unique lens, both in South American and Spanish soccer. With MLS, she's embarked on a new task: to make Latin American communities across the United States get excited about the league.

Gonzalez spoke on the Messi's influence on the league, the growth of the Latin American game within MLS and more in the latest edition of Mic’d Up, a recurring feature in which GOAL US taps into the perspective of broadcasters, analysts, and other pundits on the state of soccer in the U.S. and abroad.

GOAL: What is Messi's legacy in MLS going to be for the Latin American, the Hispanic community, that has become so fond of what Major League Soccer has developed into? What influence does he bring on and off the pitch?

GONZALEZ: I think the way the people can see MLS has changed, and they show that he is involved in everything Mayor League Soccer does. I think the name Major League Soccer will change forever due to his arrival in MLS, because… I can see I travel a lot to South America, and I travel a lot to cover the South American qualifiers. I can notice every time that I go to the airport or I'm walking through the stadiums, everybody has stopped me to talk about Major League Soccer and about Messi.

And that's unbelievable, you know, the name, the brand – I think that Major League Soccer is becoming unforgettable for everybody. And that's amazing, because 10 years ago, maybe we knew Major league soccer because of the LA Galaxy, or [Andrea] Pirlo before retiring, or David Villa, or all these big legends.

But I think that Messi’s arrival, Major League Soccer is going to be unforgettable, and for this new generation just to get involved in the meaning of Major League Soccer and try to become a fan or wear the jersey… I have a kid, he is six years-old, and he loves to wear his inter Miami Jersey. When I went to the MLS Cup in Columbus in 2023, the first thing that he called me about, he told me: Hey, Mom, can you bring me a Columbus jersey? Then it was, can you bring me an LA Galaxy jersey? And that's amazing. And I think that is just because of this Messi effect, it is getting to the new generation.

ON THE LATIN INFLUENCE IN MLS

GOAL: We recently had a La Liga Sporting Director mention MLS has become a great stepping stone for players from South America and Central America who want to continue to develop their games. What do you make of that trend, and who would you say are the perfect examples?

GONZALEZ: I think it's not a trend. It's a reality that Major League Soccer now is just a step forward to go to Europe. The perfect example is Diego Gomez. Diego Gomez came from Paraguay last year, and spent just one year playing for inter Miami.

He learned a lot playing alongside Messi, Busquets and all these legends, and one year after he just now went to the Premier League with Brighton. So in one year, being a 20-21 year old player, it is amazing how MLS is such a big step and exposure for players. And now, as a Venezuelan, we have Telasco Segovia [in MLS]. Telasco used to play in Europe, in Portugal, and people criticized him a lot for going from Europe to MLS with Inter Miami saying his career is over.

But he's only 21 years old, and for me, he's learning a lot, playing alongside Messi, Suarez, Alba, and Busquets. It’s a league where you can have a lot of minutes and opportunities to be in the starting 11 and to be in the spotlight. I'm sure if he has a good season we are going to see the same as Thiago Almada with Telasco Segovia… Playing one year, two years, and then he can just go to a bigger team in Europe, just as Diego Gomez did, too.

GOAL: What are some trends you’ve noticed about Latin American players in MLS who may not participate in English-language interviews all the time? Constantly being around them as a sideline reporter or virtually through 360 Espanol, what are some of the common traits shared across the league, and how do you think they’re influencing the growth of MLS?

GONZALEZ: It's so funny that everyone drinks mate, because even though you are not from Argentina, you see it in the locker room at the end of the season, everybody just drinks mate. It's like this special drink inside locker rooms. But I think it’s the Latin music, that is so contagious that can just get you in the mood before and after the game. I had the opportunity to be in the locker room after the LA Galaxy won the championship, and I was with Riqui Puig, Diego Fagundez, and all these Latin American players and you can see that the DJ and the music is controlled by Latin American players.

So I think sometimes when they don't want to speak English, I think it's more because they are afraid to make any mistake, or because they are not fluent in English. I think it's more like that. It's not because they don't want to speak or they don't want to do the interview. I think it's the insecurity to not have the fluency, to not have the answer, and to feel comfortable with that.

ON ONE THING TO WATCH IN THE 2025 MLS SEASON

GOAL: It was a record-breaking offseason for MLS with the amount of money spent and the players brought in, obviously, Kevin Denkey at FC Cincinnati, Miguel Almiron and Emmanuel Latte Lath to Atlanta – and Wilfried Zaha. Is there one storyline across all 30 teams that you are picking out that maybe the rest of MLS is overlooking?

GONZALEZ: The Eastern Conference, this year, is the most competitive conference in the history of Major League Soccer. That's the story – in the Eastern Conference because we have inter Miami with the obligation and responsibility to get to the MLS Cup. That is the trophy that they need to become this legendary team with Messi and everybody else.

But we have Atlanta United with Miguel Almiron with Emmanuel Latte Lath, too. I think the combination of these two inside Atlanta United is going to be amazing. Nobody talks about Charlotte, and I think that they are the silent team that everybody is going to end up looking at. We have to pay attention to what they are because they have a really good defense and then they brought in Zaha and have Patrick Agyemang.

Those two together are going to be amazing on offense, so I think the storyline is the East to see who can win that part of the conference. And on the other side, we have LA Galaxy and LAFC with all of the legends we want to see, and this summer we’re watching LAFC to see if they bring a big name in.

ON HER ROLE WITH MLS AND APPLE TV

GOAL: How has your time with MLS and Apple TV been so far for you, and what would you say has been your favorite part so far?

GONZALEZ: It has been a dream. I have to say that I'm living a dream with Major League Soccer, just to have the opportunity to arrive in the United States and start all over again, finding the perfect job that matches what I love to do. That is journalism, that is following sports, with the league that… if you see the progress every year, it is just unbelievable. Every time that I visit a stadium, when I go and have to do my job as a sideline reporter, I see the stadium and all the families just together, watching the game and loving the game.

For me, it's just amazing how MLS has been growing the family culture with soccer nowadays. So it's amazing, I am living the dream. I know that now we have more responsibility on the Spanish side because we know that the Latin American community and the European community… All of the people love Messi, [Sergio] Busquets, Jordi Alba, and all these Spanish and Latin American Legends. They are watching the game, so we have more responsibility to show the world what Major League Soccer is and why you have to keep watching the league, even though Messi, Alba, and Busquets all play in the league.

GOAL: What would you say are some of your strengths in the footballing world that you bring to the table as a personality?

GONZALEZ: Well, I think that I have traveled a lot and I have seen a lot of football my entire life. I had the opportunity to cover two World Cups, Euro Cups, and the Spanish League. So I think that I can show and bring to MLS, the huge part of what football means for the entire world because I know that, even though we call it soccer, and I have it in my vocabulary, I know that is a newer sport inside the U.S.

And you have huge competition with NFL, with NHL, with NBA, with MLB. So for me, it’s.. .my purpose and my role is to help all the Latin American communities and the Latin American community living inside the U.S. to fall in love with Major League Soccer… So I'm trying to mix my knowledge and my culture, the Latin American culture that is huge when we talk about football, and try to help the fans get in love with the meaning of soccer.

Faheem Ashraf out of second Test after testing positive for Covid-19

Pakistan’s selection frustrations in the Australia series are set to continue after allrounder Faheem Ashraf tested positive for Covid-19, days away from the second Test against Australia in Karachi. That rules out Ashraf for another Test – the second of the three-match series begins on Saturday.Ashraf tested positive on arrival at the team hotel in Karachi on Wednesday. He will now be placed in isolation for the next five days. Pakistan will take a call in due course on whether they need to replace him – give they are already traveling with a couple of replacement players in the squad.Related

Ashraf missed the first Test in Rawalpindi – Australia’s first in over 23 years in the country – with a hamstring injury he had picked towards the end of the PSL season with Islamabad United. Ashraf has been one of Pakistan’s star Test performers over the last year, scoring important runs at number seven and providing more than handy support to a four-man attack.Such has been his importance that Ramiz Raja, the PCB chairman, all but admitted on Wednesday that Ashraf’s absence – as well as that of a couple of other players was one of the reasons the Rawalpindi pitch was made so lifeless.Pakistan called up Iftikhar Ahmed and Naseem Shah in the first Test to cover for the absences of Ashraf and Hasan Ali – the latter, a key prong of their pace attack – missed out because of an adductor strain, also picked up during the PSL. Both Iftikhar and Naseem played, though the former – ostensibly a direct replacement for Ashraf – only bowled three overs.Pakistan are confident that Hasan will be fit for the second Test, allowing them to bring back an opening pair that took over 80 Test wickets last year and were the second and third-highest wicket-takers for the year. The rest of Pakistan’s squad returned negative tests, meaning that Haris Rauf is back in contention for selection. Rauf missed the first Test after testing positive for Covid-19.
