Haris Rauf closes out a thriller as Pakistan square series in three-run win

Hasnain redeemed as Dawson fightback falls inches short for England

Danyal Rasool25-Sep-2022Pakistan 166 for 4 (Rizwan 88) beat England 163 (Rauf 3-32, Nawaz 3-35) by three runsPakistan snuck home past England by three runs in a wild, mad game at the National Stadium in Karachi to level the series 2-2. In a game that ebbed and flowed so often that a three-hour contest took on the feel of an epic, England played themselves into a seemingly unassailable position at the very end, before all of a sudden playing themselves back out of it. In pursuit of 167, the visitors were one shot away from victory with three wickets in hand, before Haris Rauf tore through the lower order to leave a heartbroken England stranded against all odds.Put in to bat first, Pakistan got off to an impressive start with an 97-run opening stand, but found themselves squeezed through the middle and death, losing much of the momentum they had built up. Liam Dawson’s removal of Babar Azam looked even better in hindsight, given it brought a struggling Shan Masood to the crease, and Moeen Ali’s side wrestled the momentum back. At the end of their 20 overs, it appeared as if Pakistan were well short, having burdened their bowling attack with defending a mediocre total against the world’s most explosive batting line-up.But the hosts refused to give in, with three early wickets ensuring this wouldn’t be the cakewalk it had previously seemed. But England soon illustrated the difference in the approach both sides take to the construction of a T20 innings, with Harry Brook and Ben Duckett continuing to go after the bowlers, determined not to fall too far behind the asking rate. Moeen continued in quite the same vein for a 20-ball 29, and for a while, it looked like the jitters were over, and England were back on course. But the regular fall of wickets kept Pakistan in the hunt, until a devastating display of clutch hitting by Dawson in the 18th over seemed to swing the pendulum England’s way once and for all. But having cracked five fours and a six in the space of eight legal deliveries to leave just five required off nine, a loose shot by Dawson found midwicket’s hands, and Rauf sent debutant Olly Stone packing by knocking back his off stump first-ball. With one wicket to go, England lost their composure, setting off for a suicidal single in desperation to give Adil Rashid the strike. Shan Masood hit timber, and Pakistan had struck gold. The self-imposed squeeze Having laid the platform Babar and Mohammad Rizwan can reliably be trusted to set so regularly, Pakistan had worked themselves into a decent position after eight overs. However, as has happened much too frequently, the struggle through the middle overs manifested itself for Pakistan once more, as they sleepwalked towards a below-par total. England’s use of their bowling resources, as well as their execution, was canny enough, but the drop in intensity from the hosts was unmistakable. Masood couldn’t come close to the fluency with which he had graced the third T20I, limping to a 19-ball 21 as the bigger hitters waited their turn in the dig-out.Rizwan’s tempo dropped by a couple of notches following the Powerplay; having raced along to a 26-ball 38 after six overs, he would take 40 balls to add the next fifty. From the start of the ninth over until his dismissal in the 20th, Pakistan struck just three fours and a six. Quite what Asif Ali would have made of that was anyone’s guess, particularly since two of the three balls he did face went for enormous sixes over cow corner. Pakistan, once more, appeared to have made the fundamental T20 error of overvaluing wickets and undervaluing runs.Usman Qadir took a blinding catch to remove Alex Hales•Getty ImagesEngland stick to their guns After being reduced to 14 for three against Pakistan’s bowling attack, few sides would have had the self-belief to go after the game, but seven years of white-ball success means confidence isn’t in short supply for this England side. They would chase this total down, or go down in a blaze of glory trying. It wouldn’t be like it had been for Pakistan the previous game, batting out 20 overs and limping to a heavy defeat. The first ball after the third wicket fell, Duckett carved Mohammad Wasim through point for four, and at the end of the fifth, he took apart the same bowler, smashing him for three successive boundaries. By the end of the Powerplay, England had brought up 50, just two the total that Pakistan managed despite England failing to pick up a single Pakistan wicket in that time. It was emblematic of how England play, and, despite the agonising defeat, perhaps illustrative of why this side has been so successful. The promise and pain of Mohammad Hasnain An overseas player getting plaudits for being the sort of sexy quick bowler Pakistan like to believe they have a hegemonic hold over? That was too much for Mohammad Hasnain to bear. Hasnain’s arguably the fastest bowler Pakistan currently possess but, in a weird way, also the least loved. Shaheen Afridi, of course, is in a league of own, while Naseem Shah has the precocious talent to enthrall and the personal story to endear, while Rauf’s evolution has seen him prove many wrong and win even more over.It leaves Hasnain out in the cold slightly, particularly so since his action troubles and a tendency to be expensive. Today, however, needing to defend a low target, Hasnain bowled his first two overs with the careless abandon that makes him such absorbing viewing. He followed Alex Hales and beat him for pace. He toyed with Duckett. He came back in the 16th over, and more or less pulled off six successive yorkers. 3-0-16-2. Surely his day?He was brought back for the 18th over to close the game off, with Pakistan well into England’s tail at 134 for 7, and Dawson struggling on a run-a-ball 7. But where the margins had gone Hasnain’s way in the third over, they left Hasnain high and dry here when it counted. Yorkers became full tosses and half-volleys, and where he had once stayed just within the popping crease, this time he overstepped. 22 came off his first four legal balls, and all of a sudden, England needed just 10 from 14. Hasnain might have played a huge part in getting Pakistan to the brink, but suddenly, here he was, unravelling it all himself. Fortunately for him, and for Pakistan, and for a vociferous Karachi crowd that had just begun to give up the ghost, Rauf was not prepared to do likewise.

Bigger talent than Jobe: Sunderland could land another "monster" signing

Sunderland have a tricky February ahead with their Championship automatic promotion credentials no doubt put under the microscope across the course of the frantic month.

Two difficult away games up against Middlesbrough and Leeds United will really test the Black Cats who will enter into this set of fixtures slightly low on confidence after an underwhelming 2-2 draw with Plymouth Argyle closed out January.

Sunderland manager RegisLeBris

Regis Le Bris will still feel his side has enough to keep up the pace with the top two positions in the taxing league, however, especially if the Wearside outfit manage to keep Jobe Bellingham on their books past the transfer window shutting.

Bellingham's importance at Sunderland

Even with Bellingham failing to score or assist in his side’s last six league matches, he has shone in recent weeks for his team as a keen battler.

During his side’s recent hard-fought away win at Derby County, Bellingham would win four duels and block one effort to ensure his team got over the line to secure a slim 1-0 victory, away from showing off his attacking expertise.

Sunderland 'sJobeBellinghamin action

At the peak of his powers this season, however, the 19-year-old has been a joy to watch up top with four goals and three assists coming his way.

Off the back of these bright spells in the Black Cats first team, Bellingham has begun to be linked with a major move away to the likes of Arsenal and Borussia Dortmund, with Le Bris and Co bracing for some last-minute bids between now and Monday’s deadline as those elite clubs try and tempt the talented teenager away from the Stadium of Light.

Le Bris will be praying that Bellingham stays put as lots more could still come from the 19-year-old as the season chugs along, with the Sunderland number seven perhaps even welcoming in this new teammate soon.

Sunderland could land a bigger talent than Jobe

As reported by journalist Gokmen Ozcan last week, Sunderland are believed to have submitted a loan-to-buy deal for promising Besiktas attacker Semih Kilicsoy.

The switch would only become permanent if Le Bris’ men were successful in their aims to reach the Premier League, however, with a fee in and around the €20m (£17m) mark allegedly on the table.

Having been linked with a whole plethora of strikers this window including Emil Riis Jakobsen among others, Kilicsoy – who analyst Ben Mattinson dubbed a “physical monster” – could well be the best option available, with the Istanbul-born attacker arguably an even more exciting prospect than Bellingham.

After all, other interested parties looking at the Turkish hotshot include Aston Villa and Newcastle United according to further reports, with his explosive goalscoring record in the Super Lig for his current employers meaning he could well become a similarly clinical goal machine when making the move to England.

Kilicsoy’s first full season in the senior mix at Beskitas saw him fire home a blistering 11 strikes from 35 games, with the 19-year-old’s unselfish ability to tee up his teammates for chances – away from being an ice-cold finisher – coming to the forefront more so this season with six assists tallied up.

Bellingham has 11 goals overall during his senior career to date – when contrasting his numbers next to the 5 foot 11 forward’s breakout 2023/24 season – with the potential here for Kilicsoy to only get better surrounded by the likes of the aforementioned number seven and other exciting young attackers such as Eliezer Mayenda if he does end up leaving his native country behind.

Once heralded as a “fantastic” star for the future by football talent scout Jacek Kulig, the Beskitas number nine would love to take the English game by storm if a move did get finalised, with Wilson Isidor potentially fearful for his first team spot as Sunderland prepare to go all guns blazing for promotion.

Sunderland could finally replace Stewart by signing "terrific" striker

Sunderland will hope they can snap up this clinical striker shortly.

    WHAT ARTETA SAID

"Maybe that is another factor but I think we are very lucky because we are a football club that every time we have spoken to players, they want to be part of it [our club]," he said on Friday. "That is probably something that can generate more enthusiasm or belief, and the fact that I want to be part of these nights now because the club is in a good place. Overall, we are ready, we are strong and we can attract any player."

Arsenal are into the semi-finals of the Champions League but are set to fall short in their bid to win their first Premier League title since 2004. The Gunners may be a couple of top-class signings away from being a dominant force in the game and if they win the Champions League for the first time, they may be able to attract a higher calibre of player than ever before.

Imagine him & Iwata: Birmingham could sign the next Klarer in £2k-p/w ace

Birmingham City showed no signs of fatigue or complacency in the FA Cup on Saturday as Chris Davies’ Blues secured a 2-1 win over Lincoln City at a frosty St. Andrew’s.

Away from this cup distraction, Birmingham also sit right at the top of the League One table on a mammoth 53 points, with an instant return to the Championship looking likely at this moment in time.

But, nothing is final until that dream is officially confirmed, with this January transfer window giving Davies an apt opportunity to tweak here and there with his side to add in some top-quality additions to make his high-flying team even more formidable.

The Birmingham boss will just pray this window is as successful as his first one at the helm, with the ex-Tottenham Hotspur figure arriving on the scene keen to build his own promotion-winning team.

Birmingham's best summer business

The popular Blues manager signed off on a bumper 17 new purchases in the summer, with many going on to be rip-roaring successes in their fresh environment.

Jay Stansfield is the obvious success story, with the statement buy going on to score 12 goals in League One action from 17 clashes to date after putting pen to paper on a permanent stay.

Away from the flashier signings in the striker department, Birmingham have also struck gold in terms of some left-field purchases in defence and in the middle of the park, particularly in the capture of Christoph Klarer who was once plying his trade in Germany.

Now, the ex-SV Darmstadt 98 man is a tough, no-nonsense battler on English shores, with a ridiculous 6.7 duels won on average per third-tier contest.

This left-field approach paying off could result in the Blues picking up another gem from Germany very soon, with the player in question giving Davies another option centrally.

Birmingham pursuing deal for £2k-p/w star

As per a report last week by Sky Sports Germany journalist Florian Plettenberg, Birmingham are looking at clinching a deal for 1. FC Heidenheim star Lennard Maloney this January, with three other Bundesliga clubs also interested.

But, with how seamless Klarer has found adapting to the pressures of the English game, Maloney might well fancy his chances of starring in an unknown location in League One too.

The American has notched up 85 appearances for Heidenheim to date, with one of those appearances seeing him star against Chelsea in the UEFA Conference League in November by successfully winning five duels, albeit losing 2-0.

He could well give Birmingham something different in the middle of the park with Paik Seung-Ho and Tomoki Iwata both similar in terms of their composed nature on the ball, whilst Maloney excels at doing more of the dirty work away from spraying the ball about competently.

As can be seen looking at the table above, it’s clear the former Celtic midfielder is far more comfortable in his duties in helping out with attacks with five goals and one assist tallied up.

On the contrary, the Birmingham target stars more when rolling up his sleeves up and getting stuck in with more tackles and duels won on average this season, with his ability to play in the heart of defence also a major plus point for Davies to consider.

Davies will know he needs a substantial squad in order to get this team over the line in their quest for promotion, and with Maloney only earning £2.3k-per-week at Heidenheim currently, this feels like a shrewd acquisition to make to boost his camp.

Dream Nunez upgrade: Liverpool could secure the title with "world-class" CF

Liverpool currently sit top of the Premier League on 53 points after 22 games played, whilst Arsenal sit second on 47 points with 23 games played. If Arne Slot’s side continue at this rate, they will lift the trophy and secure Premier League glory for the first time since 2019/20.

When you compare Liverpool to their closest competitor – Arsenal – their defensive records are similar, both conceding 21 goals so far this season. Therefore, the goalscoring prowess of the Anfield side, scoring 54 goals compared to Arsenal’s 44 goals this season, is clearly where the points are being made up.

Of course, Mohamed Salah has played a huge part in that, scoring 23 goals and providing 17 assists so far this season, with 19 goals and 13 assists in his 22 Premier League games played. However, in their last four games, Salah only contributed with two goals and assists, which saw Slot’s side drop four points.

Whilst Salah will likely continue to provide high output, if he doesn’t provide said output, Liverpool could struggle to find the breakthrough, which could be the difference between them winning the league and not. Therefore, could the last few days of this window be key for the Reds?

Liverpool's need for a striker

Reports earlier this month claimed that Napoli striker Victor Osimhen – who is currently on loan at Galatasaray – was an option for Liverpool, in their bid to strengthen the forward line.

Transfer Focus

Whilst Chelsea and PSG hold long-term interest in the Nigerian number nine, the Merseysiders could make a move for the forward eventually, especially if Darwin Núñez was to be moved on, amid links to the Saudi Pro League.

Liverpool’s current striking options are Nunez, who has struggled for consistent minutes under Slot and has struggled to find his best form, Diogo Jota, who has struggled to stay fit throughout the season, and Luis Diaz, who has been playing as a make-shift centre-forward, despite being more of a left-winger.

Galatasaray's VictorOsimhenis picture wearing a protective face mask

Osimhen – who has made 21 appearances for the Turkish side this season, scoring 17 goals, providing five assists and totalling 1,627 minutes played – could well then be the answer, if a late swoop were to be pursued.

How Osimhen compares to Nunez

Nunez has managed 29 appearances for Liverpool this season, scoring six goals, providing four assists and totalling 1,515 minutes played.

Whilst he is still being used, the fact Diaz has been shifted to play through the middle shows Slot perhaps doesn’t fully trust him yet.

When comparing Osimhen to Nunez this season, you can see Osimhen is more of a typical box striker, scoring goals at an extremely high rate, generating exceptional xG numbers per 90, taking a high volume of shots and winning aerial duels for fun.

Nunez does, however, contribute more in regards to progressive actions, dropping deep and linking play more effectively, but given the quality in Liverpool’s squad already, a striker who can offer something different could be a better option for Slot’s side.

Darwin Nunez against Real Madrid

Osimhen has been labelled a “world-class” striker by José Mourinho, and that could be exactly what Liverpool need to take the goal-scoring burden off of Salah, having a centre-forward who can generate high xG chances when Salah isn’t performing and also cause havoc in the box, creating space for others around him.

Having the addition of such a clinical presence through the middle could hand the Reds that extra edge as they bid to secure the title.

Emery must now finally sell Aston Villa "genius" after signing Malen

It has been a busy window for Aston Villa so far this January. They have wasted no time aiming to improve their squad both in the short and long term, targeting a few new additions.

Unai Emery’s side will be hoping to build on their start to the Premier League season, which sees them sit in seventh place on 35 points.

Aston Villa's Ollie Watkins celebrates scoring their second goal withDiegoCarlos

Indeed, there are two long-term investments that look set to join. One of those is young Turkish defender Yasin Ozcan from Kasimpasa, as confirmed by Ben Jacobs on Tuesday. The same day, The Athletic also reported a deal for young French attacker Tidiam Gomis was close.

However, the Villans’ marquee signing so far this January has been Donyell Malen.

Malen’s move to Villa

Probably the most notable transfer in the Premier League so far this winter has been Malen’s move from Borussia Dortmund to the West Midlands. He joined Emery’s squad for a reported fee of £19m upfront and a further £2.5m in add-ons.

Interestingly, the move to Villa Park is a return to English football for the Dutch attacker. He previously played for Arsenal’s academy for two years between 2015 and 2017, joining PSV Eindhoven for £540k.

Now, as he makes his return to English shores, the progress Malen has made since he was a youngster at Hale End is clear to see. He has 39 goals and 20 assists in 139 games for Dortmund, which included a goal and assist away to Real Madrid in the Champions League this season.

The 25-year-old’s best campaign as a professional footballer came in 2020/21, for PSV, when he scored 27 times and grabbed ten assists in 45 games. Villa will be hoping he can show that kind of form when donning that famous Claret and Blue shirt.

The signing of Malen is certainly good news for the West Midlands outfit as a whole. However, the same cannot really be said for one of their players, attacker Emiliano Buendia, who now seems to be further down the pecking order.

The Aston Villa star who may now be sold

Argentine attacking midfielder Bunedia joined the Villans from Norwich City in June 2021 for £33m, which was a club-record deal at the time. However, things have not really worked out for the 28-year-old during his time at the club.

He has played 95 times in all competitions so far, finding the back of the net on ten occasions and grabbing nine assists. His finest moment in a Villans shirt came against Burnley, where he scored and assisted in a 3-1 win at Turf Moor.

Sadly, injuries have really marred the Argentine’s time at Villa Park. He missed the entirety of the 2023/24 campaign due to an anterior cruciate ligament injury. It kept him out for just short of a year, with the Villa number ten missing 56 games in that time.

emi-buendia-aston-villa-arsenal-transfer-gossip-edu-arteta-santi-cazorla

It is a real shame that the former Norwich star has not been able to find his best form at Villa Park. As football statistician Statman Dave once said, he was a “genius on the ball” at Carrow Road.

His final season with the East Anglian side, in 2020/21, was extraordinary, as the Sofascore stats show. He scored and assisted 31 goals and created 18 big chances.

There are reports that Buendia – who reportedly earns £100k-per-week at Villa Park – could depart the club before the transfer window slams shut at the start of February. Leeds United are believed to ‘retain an interest’ in the Argentine, which would see him reunite with former Norwich boss Daniel Farke.

Either way, it seems like the Argentine’s time at Villa Park is coming to an end. He has been a fantastic servant for the club over the past few years, but sadly it feels like the Villa faithful have never really seen his best form.

With the signing of Malen, it might well be time for Buendia to leave Villa once and for all this winter.

New bowler, new ball: Fitter, more focused Ollie Robinson shows he's worthy of key promotion

Seamer makes most of months on sidelines to justify leapfrogging Broad in pecking order

Vithushan Ehantharajah28-Aug-2022

Ollie Robinson dismissed Sarel Erwee at Old Trafford, having troubled him during the England Lions game too•Getty Images

On Wednesday, on the eve of the second Test against South Africa, Ben Stokes and Stuart Broad were driving back to the team hotel after a round of golf at The Mere Golf Resort & Spa. It was here that Broad first heard he would not be taking the new ball at Emirates Old Trafford. He wasn’t told, expressly. Instead, his captain floated the idea to the 36-year-old, whose last appearance as the third seamer in a home first innings was 100 Tests ago, at Trent Bridge in the 2013 Ashes Test. Broad had a think and quickly agreed the logic was sound. The response from Broad was to be expected for one who thrives on proving a point. His 3 for 37 in the first innings after being introduced first-change included Proteas skipper Dean Elgar. He ended up being the fifth option in the second innings, following an early foray for the spinners, but accounted for Aiden Markram, whom he’d earlier missed out on after overstepping. He now has 559 Test dismissals, four short of his hero Glenn McGrath who sits fifth on the all-time list. It’s not always the case that someone so decorated is so accommodating – indeed there have been times in the past when Broad might have contested the new tactic. But he took the demotion with grace, and Stokes lauded his senior man: “For Broady to understand the bigger picture about why I wanted that to be the option was an absolute credit to him.”What helped Broad see the bigger picture was that Stokes wanted to give the new ball to Ollie Robinson. Of all the quicks he has seen come through the changing-room door, Broad regards Robinson as one of the most skilful, which makes sense given that James Anderson was already inside when Broad himself walked in back in 2007. Despite Robinson being recalled for just his 10th Test, and his first since Hobart in January, Broad knew his team-mate was the better option. The prospect of this switch emerged after the England Lions match against South Africa at Canterbury, where the feedback to the main group was of Robinson’s joy against Sarel Erwee. After missing the series opener at Lord’s, and getting match-ready in the shadow of England’s innings defeat, the cord was pulled in Manchester to great effect.Robinson was unlucky to just take just the one wicket for 48 on day one – “he was on the best none-for that I’ve ever seen,” Stokes said at the post-match presentations – but bagged England’s best figures of the match on day three, with 4 for 43 as South Africa folded for 179 to confirm defeat and make it 1-1 going into the final match at The Oval.As it happens, despite the seed of an idea being planted at the start of August, and revealed to Broad on Wednesday, Robinson was only informed he was opening from the Brian Statham End after Elgar had won the toss on Thursday morning and opted to bat first.”I got told 10 minutes before we were going out I was taking the new ball,” Robinson said on Saturday night, “and then got the nod as we walked onto the field.”I was buzzing because I feel that’s my strength – making the batsman play as much as possible with the new ball. So it was a nice confidence booster from Stokesy and Baz as well.”Ollie Robinson says he has become a ‘gym freak’ in the months since his previous Test appearance in the Ashes•Getty Images

For the 28-year-old, who now boasts 44 dismissals at 20.93 at Test level, this felt like the turning of a page in a 14-month international career that has already been punctuated with controversy and misfortune. Of the 10 matches he has missed since making his debut at Lord’s against New Zealand at the start of the 2021 home season, one was due to a suspension after the emergence of historic offensive tweets, three were because he was not fit enough to cope with the rigours of a Test winter, and the four at the start of this summer were due to a combination of Covid-19, back troubles and a dental issue.”It’s been a tough six months with injury and a few doubts about myself,” Robinson said. “So it’s really satisfying to get the win here and make a decent contribution at the end.”I’ve tried to keep my head up, be quite positive and try to work as hard as I can to just get back into this environment. I was chuffed to be in this squad before we played the first Test, and to play this one I was over the moon. It’s just great to be back and that winning feeling – you just can’t beat it.”The overriding narrative around Robinson has been about fitness, something made public during the Ashes. Bowling coach Jon Lewis said Robinson needed to be fitter after struggling in the fifth Test of the 4-0 defeat, stating: “He’s got to get used to understanding what it takes to be a full-time year-round international cricketer.”It was a statement that resonated beyond the dressing-room because of the implication that Robinson was not as professional as he should be. But there were also some who felt the public chastising was not the best approach. Robinson, however, accepts nothing said was incorrect, and that Lewis, who remains part of the backroom staff but will be moved back to the ECB pathways at the end of the summer, was not saying anything he hadn’t told Robinson in private. Since working together at Sussex, the pair have a strong relationship.”It’s not easy but we’re an honest group,” Robinson said. “I took that on the chin and took it as a wake-up call as well. So I’ve used that to drive me forward in the last six months and, when times have got tough, I’ve just used that as a drive to try and keep positive.Related

“I’ve always had that positive mindset that I would get back,” he added. “I think people don’t realise that me and Jon go back quite a long way. He was my bowling coach at Sussex for three, four years. So we do have that honest relationship. It’s just hasn’t obviously come out in the press before, but we do have that honest relationship where we can say what we feel and how we felt and we just moved on after that. We spoke about it, moved on, and like I said it drove me for the last six months to get to this place today.”It is a place where, now, training no longer feels like a chore. “I’ve become a bit of a gym freak,” he added with a smile, “which I never thought I’d say.”I wake up in the morning and I’m like, I’ve really got to go to the gym. Yeah, so it’s become a bit of a habit, whereas before it was a chore and I think that’s really helped me as well. The running three times a week, the gymming three times a week, it’s just ingrained in me now, which hopefully will help for years to come.”The real change has been one of mindset rather than diet and behaviour, something triggered by chats with Stokes during the period in which Robinson was sidelined. Much of that was of the standards expected, but there was empathy, too. Stokes used himself as an example of someone who did not fully appreciate the importance of fine-tuning your body until later in his career.Stuart Broad took his demotion to first-change with grace and produced a vital first-innings spell•AFP/Getty Images

“When he first started international cricket he wasn’t in the shape he is now, and I spoke to him about how he got there – mentally, physically, the lot. And he really helped me in that stage of building back to this point today. Along with the England medical team and everyone behind the scenes, they really helped me. I’m not there yet, I’m not the finished article at all, but we’re well on the way of getting there hopefully.”Robinson regards the last six months as something of a blessing in disguise. An intense first half of his career has given way to a much quieter one in which he has been able to improve his numbers without a ball in his hand.”We’ve got obviously the last Test and then we’ve probably got six, seven weeks again before Pakistan,” he said. “So I have the opportunity again to go to the next level again. So that’s what I’m thinking at the moment, just using that time as wisely as I can to improve myself as best I can.”This realisation, authentic if overdue and all the more welcome for it, comes at a crucial juncture for the life cycle of this England side. As much as there has been a reinvigoration of Anderson and Broad, quite how long both have left is a constant fear, even if the pair state they are as happy and as willing as ever.Beyond their world-class ability is longevity, which has offered England an earthing, even in troubled times. And while they are still around, Robinson says he will absorb as much of their knowledge as possible while also working out how he might replicate their endurance, popularity and, ultimately, legacy.”Watching them two is so inspirational for me.” he said. “That’s how I want to be: I want the crowd cheering my name and that’s what I’m driving to do.”I had a point today when I was fielding at mid-off and I thought ‘I don’t want to do this for 18 months. I want to do this for five, six years’ and I feel more driven today than I did at the start of my career. I feel in such a good headspace now, after this week’s game, I can drive on and push on a lot more.”

Rizwan, Nawaz star as Pakistan clinch a classic

Mohammad Nawaz stunned India with the bat after helping restrict them with the ball after a rampant start to give Pakistan a thrilling win in their Super 4 match against India. A week after India chased successfully in a thrilling group-stage finish, Paksitan returned the favour, asking India to bat and getting home with with just one ball to spare.Aware of the historical advantage for chasing sides in Dubai, India batted ultra-aggressively in the first half of their innings, but kept losing wickets, which meant Virat Kohli, who made significant moves towards his best with a 44-ball 60, had to play a little cautiously in the second half. On a belter, despite the good start, Pakistan conceded just 88 in the last 10 overs.Mohammad Rizwan anchored the chase with 71 off 51, but it was Nawaz who provided the desperately needed impetus. Promoted to No. 4, he smashed 42 off 20 balls to put Pakistan back on track. India on the attack
Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul, both under the scanner a little bit for being a bit conservative at the top, were anything but conservative. In the first over itself, Rohit gave Naseem Shah the charge and hit him over mid-off for four. Then he stayed back and pulled him for a six. Rahul responded with some intent of his own, hitting Naseem for two sixes in the third over. The two brought up India’s second-quickest fifty batting first in T20 internationals, in just 4.2 overs.Action all around
India were in no mood to consolidate. What followed will provide a stern test of their belief in their method. Haris Rauf bowled a slower ball at the start of the sixth over, and Rohit ended up skying it. Rahul tried to hit the first ball after the powerplay for a six, and picked the wrong’un too, but ended up hitting Shadab Khan straight to long-on.The intent still didn’t ebb. Suryakumar Yadav hit the first ball he faced for a boundary, the seventh time he has done so in 24 T20I innings. However, Nawaz and Shadab made it difficult for India to keep hitting boundaries. Eventually Suryakumar looked to sweep in the air, but was done in by the length and holed out. Rishabh Pant, stifled at the start, fell to a reverse-sweep. Hardik Pandya fell to a chip to midwicket, and it became 131 for 5 in the 15th over.Virat Kohli raises his bat after reaching yet another fifty•AFP/Getty Images

Pakistan close out superbly
The spinners went for just 56 runs in their eight overs, taking three wickets too. The fast bowlers were not having a great day, and Kohli was around at the death, where his strike-rate is exceptional, especially when he has got himself in.However, Kohli was now batting with the last recognised batter, Deepak Hooda, with no six-hitters to follow. So Kohli possibly had to tone down his aggression. The fast bowlers bowled superbly too, giving Hooda few opportunities to hit. Then a slower ball went straight to long-on, leaving Kohli to farm the strike in the end.Only two misfields off the last two balls took India to 181.India shackle Pakistan
India may not have the pace of the Pakistan bowlers, but their accuracy frustrated the Pakistan top three at the start. Babar Azam chipped Ravi Bishnoi to midwicket much like Pandya had done earlier against Mohammad Hasnain. Fakhar Zaman, who had conceded seven extra runs in the field, was denied any freedom by the accuracy of the bowlers, and he was eventually left with no option but to take risks. When Fakhar was out for 15 off 18, Pakistan needed 119 off 68 balls.Mohammad Nawaz, promoted up the order, played a blinder of an innings•AFP/Getty Images

Nawaz the disruptor
It is not as though Pakistan didn’t have a specialist left-hand batter in the middle order, but they still promoted Nawaz. Perhaps because the asking rate was high, they felt the need for a low-cost hitter to keep it in check. Also Nawaz is no stranger to big hits; he has pulled them off in domestic cricket and in the PSL.Quite possibly Nawaz would have been in good hitting form in the nets because he came out and started middling everything, taking pressure off Rizwan. The next six overs went for 9, 10, 10, 11, 12, 16.Nawaz steered the second ball he faced for four. The third ball he faced went for a huge six off Pandya. Now errors started to creep in. Yuzvendra Chahal offered Rizwan a full-toss, which went for six. The quicks missed their lengths a bit. And the cameo went on for long enough to bring Pakistan within 46 of the win, with 27 balls left. The nervy finish
Pandya got Rizwan out with persistent wide lines. Bishnoi, who had an over left, bowled a superb 18th over, conceding just eight, bringing the equation down to 26 off the last two overs. India were right back in with a chance, but they had also made a mistake. Arshdeep Singh had dropped a sitter from Asif before he had scored a run.Asif and Khushdil proceeded to cancel out Fakhar’s fielding errors by taking 19 off Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s 19th over, his second-costliest at the death in T20 internationals. Then Asif hit Arshdeep for a four in the 20th to leave Pakistan needing two off four balls. Arshdeep came back to trap him lbw, but with two required off the last two, Iftikhar Ahmed found the winning runs off a low full-toss.
