Southampton: Djenepo and Redmond can give Hasenhuttl his dream attack

Southampton have started the transfer window with a bang following their £15m capture of Moussa Djenepo from Standard Liege.

The 21-year-old has since been speaking about his move to St. Mary’s, explaining what he will bring to the team, which should excite both Ralph Hasenhuttl and supporters.

“I’m quick and I enjoy dribbling with the ball. That’s what the fans can expect of me and I will give my all for them,” Djenepo told Southampton’s official club website.

Ultimately, that style of play looks ideal for what Hasenhuttl has been trying to implement on the south coast.

Since succeeding Mark Hughes as manager last December, the former RB Leipzig boss has moulded the Saints into a side who press high (the club’s official website took a closer look at this) and are dangerous on the counter-attack, as indicated by James Ward-Prowse’s comments on that tactical as per Sport Bible. That is why Djenepo, with the pace and dribbling he has spoken about, should fit in nicely.

Alongside the versatile Redmond, the duo could form quite the attack. The 25-year-old, who is also no slouch, averaged 2.4 dribbles per Premier League game last season, while Djenepo averaged 2.2 in the Europa League.

To put that into perspective, only Wilfried Zaha (3.4) and Eden Hazard (3.7), arguably the two best 1v1 wingers England has seen over the last few years, averaged more (as per WhoScored).

If Hasenhuttl is looking to make Southampton more dangerous out wide and on the break, with Djenepo to now go with Redmond, he might accomplish just that after one summer transfer window.

What have the experts said about new Leicester signing Ayoze Perez?

[ad_pod ]

Leicester City’s summer has all of a sudden burst into life.

Last week they confirmed the addition of Ayoze Perez who arrived for a fee of £30m, a total which broke their transfer record after previously bringing Islam Slimani to the club for £1m less.

Yet, just a matter of days later, Youri Tielemans’ permanent switch to the Foxes was confirmed, smashing Perez’s record by £10m.

The club well and truly have lift off and after being subjected to a summer where Harry Maguire has been the main centre of attention, attracting a bid from Manchester United, the focus is now being directed elsewhere.

The signing of Perez, though, could be canny business. This is a player who ended last season by netting six goals in his final five outings for Newcastle but what have the experts said about him?

Luis Garcia, former Spanish international:

“He definitely deserves a try [in the Spain team] because he’s been amazing, it’s not easy in a team which is being rebuilt, hasn’t had much help for Rafael Benitez but every time he is on the pitch he delivers something special.

“He’s a very technical player, knows how to move to score goals and it is something that maybe Rafa was asking a little bit more [from him].”

Considering some of the great Spanish strikers that have gone before him, earning a call-up to the national side – as his compatriot Garcia alluded to on Sky Sports’ Goals on Sunday (24/02/19, 12:26), via The Chronicle – would be quite something.

Interestingly, it’s something he’s reiterated he has a vision of achieving in the past.

Previously in 2017, he told Sky Sports, via The Chronicle that it was a dream to play for the national side, before revealing to Marca this year that he hoped the same ambition would come true.

In terms of the goals Garcia spoke about, his 2018/19 campaign was one of his best yet, finding the net 12 times as he ended the campaign as Newcastle’s top scorer.

Per Sky Sports, 62% of his shots were on target, which is hugely impressive and it’s that statistic that bodes particularly well for the Foxes going into next term.

He finished last season with an average of 1.5 shots per game, a tally that would have put him fifth in the shots per game leaderboard at Leicester.

Noel Whelan, commentator and ex-footballer:

“He’s always been a good player, we saw that there’s a spark in him, he’s got a change of pace, he’s good on the ball very intelligent player and when you’ve got those three things obviously clubs will be interested, especially at a club that have sort of struggled.”

Fascinatingly, Whelan tipped Perez for a move away from Newcastle when speaking to Football Insider earlier this year. He waxed lyrical about the Spaniard, hailing the new Leicester signing for what he can offer.

It’s clear Perez is an intelligent player by his all-round contribution to the side. Not only does he add goals but he’s also creative as well, boasting the ability to play in a variety of positions.

At Leicester there is a strong possibility that he could be preferred either on the right or behind Jamie Vardy, who will presumably continue to start in attack after thriving under Rodgers at the culmination of the 2018/19 season, scoring ten goals in the final 11 games of the Premier League season.

To provide evidence of just how intelligent he is, he created the same number of opportunities, 1.2 per game, as Tielemans managed in a Leicester shirt last term.

Could Daniel Sturridge be set to reunite with Brendan Rodgers? Check out the video below to find out…

Anton Toloui, Sky Sports reporter:

“He adds options to that frontline, they’ve got very direct options and Jamie Vardy probably needs some support behind him and they need a back up for James Maddison if he can’t play. He brings versatility and he brings pressing. He brings a certain defensive discipline to a team that Brendan Rodgers will absolutely love as well.”

Speaking to Sky Sports’ Good Morning Transfers as Leicester were in the middle of pursuing Perez, Toloui spoke about what exactly the 25-year-old can offer at Leicester.

After last season the Foxes desperately needed to add to their attacking options. Besides Vardy, who scored 18 and James Maddison, who netted seven, they lacked a coherent and consistent goal threat.

However, Perez will give them a refreshing option which, on paper, is far better than the four-goal Demarai Gray, someone he could rival on the right-hand side.

His ability to press, though, could be game-changing for Rodgers’ side.

Last season he managed particularly striking defensive statistics, making 1.6 tackles per game whilst managing a further 1.1 interceptions.

Verdict

It remains to be seen just how much of an impact Perez will have on the Leicester side but for £30m it’s likely the pressure will be on him to succeed.

The Foxes have already seen big money signings in Slimani and Kelechi Iheanacho fail, with the pair of them scoring just 13 and 10 goals respectively after their arrivals.

But despite that, the glowing reviews above are a demonstration of the quality he does indeed have.

From the expert opinions it’s clear he’s got more than one dimension to him, and that in itself should be conducive to a successful spell in the Midlands.

Manchester United fans left in awe over Mason Greenwood

[ad_pod ]

Manchester United have a history of producing fabulous youth products. All you need to do is look at the Class of ’92 to understand the reputation that comes with young players coming through the ranks at Old Trafford.

A number of years ago Marcus Rashford burst onto the scene but they’ve now got a new prodigy to get excited about in Mason Greenwood.

The 17-year-old was afforded a chance off the bench in United’s 1-0 win over Inter Milan last Saturday and even scored the winning goal. He cut inside and unleashed a curling effort on his left foot which found the corner.

It was a fabulous finish and his performance sparked quite the reaction from United fans on Twitter.

The teenager drew comparisons to a certain Robin van Persie as two supporters claimed the goal was like one scored by the Dutchman.

A further fan said he could bring the glory back to the number 7 shirt whilst another commented that they loved seeing the academy kids step up.

Greenwood played three times in the Premier League last term, as well as making one appearance in the Champions League.

In all competitions in 2018/19, he scored 26 goals in 30 outings.

Here’s what United fans have been saying about him.

Ray Parlour urges Arsenal to sign Ryan Fraser this summer

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

In an interview with Football.London, Arsenal legend Ray Parlour has urged his former side to make a move for Bournemouth winger Ryan Fraser this summer.

What’s he said?

Having seen the Gunners’ most natural wide players Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Alex Iwobi struggle to really deliver big numbers last season, it’s been no surprise to see Unai Emery target a new wide-man this summer.

Reports in recent weeks and months had suggested that the club would be looking for a move for Fraser, particularly with the Scotland international’s contract expiring next year. Now, Parlour has given his seal of approval on a potential move for the 25-year-old.

Watch the video below to see the most insane overhead kick you will see this week…

He said: “I’ve watched him a few times last year at Bournemouth, he’s always positive, he runs at players, he creates chances so sometimes you’ve got to take a punt on players and take a gamble and certainly he’s impressed me when I’ve watched him.

“I think Fraser would do a great job for Unai Emery. They’ve got to take a chance on him. The number of assists he creates is impressive.”

Proven Premier League quality

Valued at £27m by Transfermarkt, Fraser’s numbers in the Premier League were amongst the best. Scoring seven goals and providing a further 14 assists, the winger had a prolific campaign for Eddie Howe’s men last season.

Watch Arsenal Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

The diminutive winger struck up a fine partnership with Callum Wilson and showed all the characteristics Emery will be hoping to add this summer. Pace, directness and an end product. It is perhaps a damning statement of both Iwobi and Mkhitaryan that Fraser alone comfortably bettered their combined output in the top-flight last year.

Indeed, Fraser’s contract situation is only of added benefit to Arsenal and it will mean that they can potentially strike a deal for far less than what the 25-year-old would otherwise be worth. In an inflated market like today, a deal for Fraser makes both financial and footballing sense and Parlour is spot on in urging his club to make a move for the Premier League ready star.

Jamie Redknapp bantered on Instagram for belated birthday announcement

[ad_pod ]

Jamie Redknapp posted a belated Instagram snap thanking everyone for the great birthday wishes on Wednesday.

His actual birthday was on Tuesday, and the Liverpool legend decided to celebrate it with a big ticket giveaway for his “A League of Their Own” show, and a chance to meet the big man and the whole crew themselves.

But despite his 46th birthday already being a couple of days behind past, many stars were keen on replying to Redknapp on his

/BzLoqjdFdmL/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link” data-lasso->Instagram snap and either bantering him or simply wishing him all the best.

Some of the most interesting and funny stuff actually came from people who already congratulated him before, so were here mainly for the laughs. One of those people was Eidur Gudjohnsen, the ex-footballer who was quick to compare the Liverpool legend to Gordon Ramsey, the famous chef.

Redknapp’s partner in crime and the stand-up comedian who is also a part of the aforementioned show, Romesh Ranganathan, was naturally all for laughs so he just pointed out that he did not agree to meet anyone despite the birthday announcement.

Apart from those two jokesters, the rest were pretty much in serious mode and either congratulated the ex-star again or did it for the first time, apologising for forgetting in the process.

Redknapp was one of the Reds for a total of 11 years and is still well regarded in those parts.

Sunderland fans rejoice as Donald Love on verge of exit

[ad_pod ]

Loads of Sunderland fans have been celebrating the latest transfer news, as Donald Love is set to depart the club after three disastrous years.

According to The Sunderland Echo, the 24 year-old is all set to leave the Stadium of Light this summer.

Even though he still has one year left on his contract, the report claims he will join Shrewsbury on a free transfer, with the club clearly keen to shift his £450k-a-year salary by any means necessary.

Love joined the club from Manchester United in 2016 and was billed as a promising young defender, but has since been relegated twice.

He made just four League One appearances last season, and has only managed 34 in total during his entire three-year stay on Wearside.

And fans are overjoyed on Twitter after hearing the news that Love will finally depart, which is perhaps the first really positive move the club will have made this summer – they have only made two signings for the senior side so far, Conor McLaughlin and Lee Burge.

Rangers fans react to Lee Bowyer’s comments on Joe Aribo

[ad_pod ]

Rangers fans are not happy with Charlton manager Lee Bowyer after his outspoken comments on Joe Aribo’s move to Ibrox.

As reported by The Daily Record, Bowyer was highly critical of Aribo after rejecting the chance to stay on in the English Championship and move to Steven Gerrard’s side in Glasgow.

Aribo has still not been officially unveiled as a Rangers player, but with Gerrard already waxing lyrical about the impact he can make at Ibrox next season then it’s clear he is on his way.

The fans in the video below had some very strong words for Michel Platini who was detained over alleged corruption this week…

As quoted by The Record, the Charlton boss said of the situation:

“It doesn’t make sense on the football side. When people from England go and play for Celtic and Rangers it is at the end of their careers. That’s because it is very rare you get a move from Rangers to the Premier League, and I don’t mean any disrespect by that.

“They might go from Rangers to the Championship, very rarely is it to the Premier League. For me he should stay in England and keep progressing. The move should benefit Joe.”

The move to Scotland is also less beneficial for the London club than if he moved to an English side due to cross-border compensation rules. The paper say that Aribo will move north for a fee of just £300,000.

It’s fair to say the comments haven’t gone down well with Rangers supporters, some of whom feel they have a touch of sour grapes about them and others believing he is inaccurate about players’ lack of development at Ibrox.

Celtic losing Scott Sinclair would be no real loss despite Neil Lennon’s claims

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

Neil Lennon has stated his desire to keep Scott Sinclair amid rumours that he could be set for a return to England.

What’s the story?

Lennon was speaking after his side’s 2-0 win over Nomme Kalju and addressed rumours that had been doing the rounds in the build-up to the game. According to The Lancashire Evening Post, Preston North End had made an enquiry about the possibility of bringing the Celtic winger to Deepdale on loan.

As reported by BBC Sport, the Celts boss addressed the rumours, stating that: “He’s got a great goal record and he’s had a great time at Celtic. So we don’t want him to go. That’s for sure.”

The winger has struggled for game time under Lennon since the Northern Irishman took over from Brendan Rodgers in February though, starting just five times since his new manager came in.

Is Lennon right?

Now, Lennon was hardly going to say to that he wants rid of him and give Preston leverage in any potential negotiations for the 30-year-old. Yet, it would be no surprise if his comments were nothing more than a sales technique designed to strengthen his club’s bargaining position.

By stating his intention of holding onto the player to the board and the interested party he’s not going to harm the winger’s potential price. In what has been a busy summer for the club, extracting maximum value from sales and moving on underperforming high-earners has become an even more pertinent issue than it already was.

Let’s not forget the veteran barely started under Lennon, who clearly values the youthful exuberance of his younger players.

The Bhoys have spent around £12m so far this summer (plus all the wages that come with such an outlay), so they will inevitably be looking at player departures to balance the books.

With Sinclair on £25,000-a-week at Parkhead, per The Daily Star, a loan away might not bring in a massive fee but it would trim the wage budget considerably.

On top of the financial side of things, Lennon has a squad more than capable of absorbing the loss of Sinclair. The likes of Lewis Morgan, Mikey Johnston and Marian Shved could in fact benefit from his departure if it meant more regular game time at Parkhead. All three are young and hungry to improve, while Sinclair is headed in the opposite direction.

Quite simply, Sinclair was nothing more than a depth player under Lennon last year, and with Shved and Johnston both wowing fans in Champions League qualifying this week after Morgan did the same previously, it may just be the right time to let the 30 year-old make his bow.
