Leeds’ Managing Director Angus Kinnear has just displayed their ambition

Leeds’ Managing Director Angus Kinnear has opened up on the club’s transfer window in an interview with Yorkshire Evening Post, detailing how much money they turned down for respective players over the summer.

What’s he said?

Leeds had a rather topsy-turvy transfer window that saw Kalvin Phillips sit at the centre of interest from the Premier League.

Aston Villa plotted a £14m move at one stage whilst he also caught the attention of Wolves and Bournemouth. He eventually stayed but there were departures in the form of both Pontus Jansson and Kemar Roofe.

The former started 37 times in 2018/19 whilst Roofe netted 15 times so it’s likely their exits will be felt hard.

However, Leeds turned down offers for some of their other star players, something which offers a sign of the huge ambition they have as a football club. Speaking to Yorkshire Evening Post, Kinnear said:

“If you look at the single biggest bids we’ve received for players, we’ve received over £35m worth of bids. If you take the biggest bid for Kalvin, Adam Forshaw, Luke, Pablo, there’s £35m we’ve turned down.”

Good work from Leeds

After Jansson’s sale it all seemed very doom and gloom at Elland Road. Supporters weren’t pleased with their defence and understandably so after some of their pre-season showings.

Yet, there are reasons to be positive heading into their second match of the season this weekend with Nottingham Forest.

The news that they rejected £35m worth of bids is a colossal sign of the sheer ambition they have to get back into the Premier League, even if some of their transfer business dictated that aim wasn’t there.

The majority of their business was all loan additions but in holding onto players like Phillips, Adam Forshaw, Luke Ayling and Pablo Hernandez, Leeds have set themselves up for a far greater season.

There were initial fears over financial fair play when selling Jansson but that now doesn’t appear to be as big a problem if over £30m was turned away this summer.

For Leeds, this is an indication of where they are as a team and Kinnear’s comments add extra weight to the aspirations they have.

Swatting away interest from other clubs should be hugely encouraging.

Real Madrid fans slam Vinicius Junior after his latest comments

Vinicius Junior has so far had a mixed career at Real Madrid.

After arriving from Brazil in 2018, he seemed like the real deal. Back then, at just 18 years of age, Vinicius was already well established and with enough flair to warrant a transfer to a club of Real Madrid’s size.

He scored ten goals and assisted four for his former club and then went on to score three and assist 12 in 34 games for Los Blancos. But unfortunately, a serious injury halted his progress and he is yet to fully regain his momentum.

But with the arrival of Eden Hazard, he might have to adapt to playing on the right as opposed to his natural left. In a recent interview with his national team, however, he confirmed that he has difficulties playing in an unknown role but also that he is slowly adapting to it.

Unfortunately, many Real Madrid fans didn’t really take kindly to his words despite the young forward’s willingness to try out a new position on the pitch.

They quickly took to Twitter to slam the 19-year-old after the interview. Some thought that he should be grateful to just be a part of such a big team while the others were harsher and demanded that he be sent back to Castilla or the bench.

You can see some of their replies in the tweets below…

Spurs line up move for Steven Sessegnon

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

Tottenham Hotspur are lining up a move for Fulham defender Steven Sessegnon, the brother of summer signing Ryan, per The Sun.

What’s the word?

The report states that Spurs attempted to sign Steven when they were in negotiations for his brother in the summer, making a £3m bid.

That offer was rejected but The Sun states that Fulham fear Spurs will return with another offer soon.

His twin brother has yet to make his debut for Tottenham due to injuries.

But Steven has already made four appearances for the Cottagers this season and has also been included in the England Under-21 squad for clashes with Turkey and Kosovo.

Dogged determination

Daniel Levy made a deal for Ryan very difficult by attempting to bring in his brother too.

Football FanCast understands that negotiations between the two clubs dragged because of his determination to sign both twins.

Fulham wanted the two deals to be separate and, ironically, the path could now be smoother.

Because they already have one, negotiations are unlikely to be anywhere near as complicated as they look to bring Steven into the club, provided they can agree a fee with the Championship club.

Levy has always been regarded as a master negotiator and it appears that his determination could well pay off.

Rangers have a gem in Joe Aribo, says Steven Gerrard

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

Steven Gerrard has been praising Joe Aribo again, after the former Charlton man impressed his manager and fans in the 3-0 League Cup win over East Fife.

What’s he said?

Gerrard has sung the praises of one of his most interesting summer signings, with Aribo already catching the imagination of the supporters. The Nigerian midfielder has settled into life at Ibrox quickly, scoring four times in his eight appearances for the Light Blues.

Brought in from promoted Championship new boys Charlton Athletic, Aribo has put disconcerting voices behind him to make a flying start to his Gers career.

As reported by BBC Sport, the Gers manager was full of praise for the 23-year-old after Sunday’s win: “I am not sure how many good players have been at this stadium, but I don’t think you will see many better than Joe.

“He can go as far as he wants. I hope he stays alongside me for many years, but he’s got the world at his feet.”

Gerrard is spot on

Aribo came to Ibrox this summer off the back of helping Charlton get promoted to the second-tier of English football, and attracted some interest from big clubs in the past campaign. A transfer to Arsenal seemed an unlikely deal, but given his start to life at Rangers, you can understand why Unai Emery might’ve had a look at the midfielder before his move to Glasgow.

A Celtic fan has claimed Celtic won’t just join the EPL in the near future but they’ll make the Top 4 as well! Watch the controversial video below…

The fact that he’s settled into life at a club as demanding as the Gers so quickly shows he can cope with the pressure of the biggest stages. This bodes well for Gerrard’s comment that he feels Aribo can go as far in the game he wishes. Potential suitors can look to his blistering start at an important juncture in the season as a reason to pursue the midfield star in the future.

While it’s a bit early for him to be looking for a move away, continuing in this fashion will almost certainly prove his manager’s praise to be right. If Aribo can keep up this incredible form and make it last across the season he could very well have the world at his feet and the biggest clubs in Europe at his door.

Everton fans react as Alex Iwobi breakthrough is made with Arsenal

[ad_pod ]

Lots of Everton fans have taken to Twitter to react after it was revealed by the BBC’s David Ornstein that a fee in the region of £35m – £40m has been agreed with Arsenal for Alex Iwobi.

The Nigeria international scored three goals and recorded six assists in the Premier League for the Gunners last term, but the north Londoners appear to be happy with the money on offer and are prepared to let the 23-year-old leave the Emirates Stadium.

The signing of Nicolas Pepe from Lille may have pushed Iwobi down the pecking order, and the Toffees have wasted no time in lining up the attacker after their pursuit of Wilfried Zaha fizzled out.

The Ivorian was sent home from training today by Roy Hodgson and the former England manager also confirmed that the 26-year-old would be staying at the club, so Marcel Brands appears to have quickly moved for an alternative.

Check out some amazing tekkers in the video below…

A deal sheet has been submitted to the Premier League in order to get the transfer over the line.

Let’s see how the Everton fans on Twitter reacted to the news…

Wolves loanee Jesus Vallejo may have to suffer on the bench because of early season progress

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s The Chalkboard series, which provides a tactical insight into teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…

Wolves’ Premier League season didn’t start in the best possible way last weekend as they were subjected to one of the first controversial VAR calls of the season.

Leander Dendoncker looked to have given Nuno Santo’s side the lead, only for the goal to be ruled out because of a new handball rule.

As a result, the game was drawn 0-0 as both teams held firm in defence.

The black and gold were excellent on the counter-attack last term, particularly against some of the best sides, achieving 16 points against top-six opposition.

However, it was their defence that stood out most as the new term started.

On the chalkboard

As a result of their defensive display against the Foxes, Wolves may have to continue to leave Jesus Vallejo out.

Against Leicester he wasn’t included in the squad but it surely won’t be too long before the Real Madrid man features in the Premier League.

Arriving on loan from La Liga over the summer, it wouldn’t have been a great surprise to see him slot straight into the defence.

Ryan Bennett looked the most likely to drop out given Conor Coady is the skipper and Willy Boly’s resolute nature. Yet, the former was superb against Leicester which means Vallejo may have to suffer on the sidelines for a little longer.

There is no doubting the Spaniard’s pedigree. After all, he was one of the players win the European U21 Championships this summer.

However, the dogged and perhaps rather surprising performance of Bennett and the rest of the defence on week one of the Premier League makes it difficult to see how Vallejo starts against Manchester United on Monday evening.

If you don’t know the words to the Joao Moutinho chant in the video below, are you even a real Wolves fan?…

Bennett won two aerial duels last weekend whilst also making an impressive four interceptions. The central defender showed his no-nonsense approach with three clearances too.

It was a resilient performance against a Leicester team boasting numerous creative outlets and it showed he does indeed have the ability to step up.

On evidence this season, it could be a hard task for Vallejo to make an instant impact.

The positive for him, however, will be the fact that he’s far more likely to get game time as a result of Nuno’s preferred three-man defensive unit.

Liverpool fans react to Jota’s wonder-goal for Wolves on Thursday

[ad_pod ]

Wolves attacker Jota scored a wonder-goal in his side’s 4-0 Europa League win against Pyunik at Molineux on Thursday night, and Liverpool fans were quick to react on Twitter and are clearly impressed by the 22-year-old.

The Portuguese forward took a while to get going in the Premier League last season with his first goal not arriving until December, but a tactical change by manager Nuno Santo to switch him from the wing to playing off of striker Raul Jimenez worked wonders.

Jota ended the 2018/19 campaign with 10 goals and seven assists in 37 appearances in all competitions, according to Transfermarkt, while he has started the current campaign with two goals and five assists in five outings.

One of those goals was a brilliant acrobatic effort against their Armenian opponents on Thursday, which has attracted interest from a wider football audience, including Liverpool supporters.

16-year-old Harvey Elliott was the only attacking-based new signing to arrive at Anfield during the previous transfer window, and it may well be an area that the Merseyside outfit look to strengthen either in January or next summer.

If the majority of the following fans had their way, they would be bringing the 22-year-old in.

While one individual said that “he reminds me a little bit of a young Luis Suarez”, another said he “would be a really good back-up for Bobby”.

Here is just a selection of the Twitter reaction…

Real Madrid should consider a change of formations in order to get the best out of their squad

This article is part of Football FanCast’s The Chalkboard series, which provides a tactical insight into teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…

Real Madrid have been struggling with injuries for a while now and that has left them with few options in the new 2019/20 La Liga season. But looking at how most of those injuries have come in the left wing position, maybe a swap of formations would solve this problem.

On the chalkboard

Currently, there are six players sidelined by injuries in the Real Madrid squad and Zinedine Zidane must be trying to figure out how to deal with that as we speak. Four of those six players, however, are also left-wingers, including their big summer signing, Eden Hazard. Looking ahead to the games that are due, fixing this issue will probably be a priority for the French coach.

Watch Spanish Football Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

And of course, one of the options is to try and turn someone into a make-shift winger for a while or at least until someone more qualified becomes available. Currently, however, his only real, natural option is Vinicius Junior but even though Zidane maybe should play the young Brazilian and put some faith in him, recent reports are suggesting there’s still a big question mark above the youngster’s head.

With that in mind, there is still one other thing Zidane can do to somehow minimise the damage and still come out on top.

A simple tweak

What if instead of taking a risk with a young player or even worse, with an attempt to convert someone else into a wide man, Zidane simply used a different formation that doesn’t necessarily need a true left winger?

Although there was a slight deviation to a 4-1-4-1 last time out, Real Madrid traditionally play in a 4-3-3 system that utilises a centre-forward who’s flanked by two wide players. Looking at their squad right now, that would probably be Karim Benzema up front and Gareth Bale and Eden Hazard on the wings. But since Hazard is injured and there’s no one else bar Vinicius to fill that void on the left, a simple switch to 4-4-2 would potentially do the trick.

That way, Zidane can make a tandem of Benzema and Bale, since the Welshman can also play as a centre-forward when needed, or include Luka Jović, another summer signing, and pair him up with the Frenchman. Either of these options just might work and could be worth a shot.

Zidane still has enough midfielders in his squad to compensate for this shift and finding a fourth should be, in theory, easier than finding that third winger. This could also transform into a 4-2-2-2 in the attacking phase considering that likely none of those midfielders would be really comfortable going extremely wide.

But that’s not a problem since they can use Marcelo to provide width on the left, considering his attacking tendencies, and then Bale or full-back Dani Carvajal to do so on the right.
