West Ham fans react to Sebastien Haller’s performance against Southampton

It was a good evening at the office for West Ham at St. Mary’s Stadium against Southampton.

The Hammers won 1-0 against Ralph Hasenhuttl’s team thanks to a goal from Sebastien Haller. It ends an eight-game goal drought in the Premier League for the former Eintracht Frankfurt man, and it was a well-taken strike as well. Manuel Pellegrini will be delighted with his performance, and he will be happy that his side won, although it was just their second victory in their last 12 matches.

The club’s supporters were delighted with the 25-year-old’s display, and they took to Twitter to share their thoughts.

A football legend: How much do you know about the late, great Bobby Moore? Test your knowledge below…

Indeed, it was a brilliant display. He managed a SofaScore rating of 8.2, and won 10 of the 19 aerial battles he took part in against Southampton, whilst he also completed all three dribbles.

Many supporters were sure that was down to one reason – him playing up front alongside Michail Antonio.

It certainly did look like a good partnership – Antonio himself won the Man of the Match award – and it could be the start of something special. As long as Pellegrini chooses to go with this partnership, of course.

It remains to be seen whether the Hammers can now build on this display.

Arsenal starlet Joe Willock hails Freddie Ljungberg’s immediate impact

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

As quoted by Sky Sports, Joe Willock has hailed Freddie Ljungberg’s immediate impact on Arsenal after the Swede took over as interim head coach.

What did he say?

The Gunners have endured a rocky start to the season, already suffering four defeats in the Premier League and finding themselves ninth in the table. Their poor opening cost Unai Emery his job, with Ljungberg being named in charge for the time being.

And after seeing the Gunners get their first win under the Invincibles hero on Monday night with a win over West Ham, Willock was quick to hail the former midfielder’s influence on the side.

He said: “I worked with Freddie last year and he taught me a lot on and off the pitch, like a mentor. I’m delighted that he’s in the job now. It’s good for me and I’ll continue working hard and working with him.

“I feel like it was not just the manager (that was underperforming) it was the team as well. We needed to improve as a team and that’s what we tried to do. Freddie is good at relating to the players because he’s done it and he’s worn the t-shirt. He knows how it feels to be in our position. But I feel like it was more of the team’s fault and we needed to improve.”

Seal of approval

As will surely be the case with many of Arsenal’s talented prospects who have come through the academy, Ljungberg is very highly-regarded by each and every one of them. The Swede’s work with the youth sides means the club’s starlets are likely to feel re-energised by his presence on the touch-line, and that can act as a sort of breath of fresh air for their upcoming performances.

Recent reports have claimed the Gunners have got a 12-man shortlist as they look to permanently appoint a successor to Emery, but if results pick up, and players like Willock continue to sing his praises, then Ljungberg’s chances of getting the top job will continue to increase.

Raul Sanllehi must simply listen to the players themselves, as they have already shown that executive decisions may not be the best for them as a whole. Ljungberg’s chances for the role in the long-term seems remote now, with names like Mikel Arteta and Carlo Ancelotti being bandied about. But if the Swede can inspire a turnaround, then the Gunners hierarchy must take heed.

Meanwhile, Arsenal have been told to cash in on Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang before it’s too late, according to this pundit.

Matteo Guendouzi shone despite Arsenal’s shocking result vs Southampton

This article is part of Football FanCast’s In Numbers series, which takes a statistical look at performances, season-long form and reported transfer targets…

Before facing Arsenal, Southampton had lost all of their last three Premier League games, a run that included a 9-0 loss at the hands of Leicester City.

Therefore, many will likely have been left frustrated by the fact that the Gunners were unable to take all three points against the South Coast side, who currently occupy a place in the relegation zone.

The eventual 2-2 draw will be seen as a shocking result for Unai Emery and his team, but one man who can walk out of the game with their head held high is Matteo Guendouzi.

He put in a brilliant performance defensively, with the most notable contribution being that he completed all of his four tackles attempted during the game – a tally that saw him joint-top with David Luiz.

In addition to that, the 20-year-old made two clearances and four interceptions, he had the joint-highest total of any Arsenal player in the latter category, alongside Lucas Torreira.

The Frenchman, who is rated at £40.5m on Transfermarkt, was also effective with the ball at his feet, completing three of his four attempted dribbles, keeping a pass success rate of 91% and playing one key pass.

Arsenal’s overall performance in this game simply wasn’t good enough, but Guendouzi managed to shine, even if it wasn’t enough to earn his side all three points.

Aston Villa must let Keinan Davis go this summer

Aston Villa need to let Keinan Davis go this summer.

The 22-year-old striker is clearly a talent, and there is surely a reason that Villa decided to snap him up from non-league Biggleswade Town in 2015.

But he hasn’t shown it at all.

The Athletic reported earlier this season that Davis’ strength is such that even John Terry, Villa’s assistant manager and the ex-Chelsea and England captain, hates defending against him in training.

That is all well and good, but his opportunity to grab the bull by the horns and become Villa’s first-choice striker has well and truly passed him by.

Indeed, Davis has made 33 appearances for the U23s in his career and, in that time, has scored a grand total of seven goals, while providing eight assists.

Those goals have come between the 2015-16 season and the 2018-19 season at a rate of 1.75 goals per season.

Davis has scored goals for the first-team, it must be said, netting four in 57 outings.

But, again, the hit rate there is abysmal – it equates to a goal every 0.07 games.

He last scored a senior goal in August 2019, in the 6-1 win over Crewe Alexandra in the EFL Cup. His other three goals for the first-team came in 17-18, two of which were in the Championship, while the other came in an FA Cup tie against Peterborough United, which Villa lost 3-1.

It must be said at this point that injuries have held Davis back; he was ruled out for three weeks in February of this year with a hamstring injury, and the aforementioned Athletic report makes mention of a niggling hip injury that has troubled him throughout his career.

Did he really play for us?! No Villa fan has managed to name all of these obscure Villans….

However, the stats paint a clear picture: This is a striker who doesn’t score enough goals.

Davis’ contract expires at the end of the season and Villa do have the option to extend it if they so wish.

So poor has he been, and given he has played just 129 minutes of Premier League football this season, they should merely let him go instead.

Meanwhile, Villa could land their Jack Grealish replacement this summer!

Image shows Celtic were right not to sign Andraz Sporar

Celtic are on course for domestic success yet again this season and although the January transfer window may not have initially turned out as planned, it now seems that the club may have had a lucky escape.

The Bhoys were embroiled in a transfer battle to sign then Slovan Bratislava striker Andraz Sporar, but missed out on that opportunity when the Slovenia international instead opted for Sporting Lisbon.

That move suggested Celtic had missed out on a fairly prestigious player, particularly as the 26-year-old impressed in his homeland with 20 goals in 27 games prior to his January move.

However, he has failed to replicate that consistency since moving to Portugal. Three goals in nine games is somewhat underwhelming and indicates that Neil Lennon made the right call in deciding not to buy the forward.

Celtic may have had to part with £7m too which is quite a considerable fee for them to have spent in January, particularly as the striker hasn’t been required.

The Glasgow outfit have extended their lead in the Scottish Premiership since and although they were knocked out of the Europa League, Sporar may not have been able to prevent that outcome anyway.

The image above shows the striker’s reaction to missing a chance in the home leg against Istanbul Basaksehir. Although he did score in that match his other miss was crucial to the Portuguese side being knocked out, as Sporting lost the tie by a single goal.

Spurs fans drool over Heung-min Son

Tottenham Hotspur fans have been drooling over their forward Heung-min Son after a question was posed to supporters on social media this week.

One Twitter account asked the Spurs faithful to describe the 27-year-old using one word, which left many waxing lyrical about him.

Son has played 32 times this campaign, scoring 16 goals as well as providing nine assists, via Transfermarkt, who also currently value him at £57.6m.

The South Korean has been back in his home nation in recent weeks, completing mandatory three-week military service, where he also claimed top honours by winning the award for best performance.

Son fractured his arm and had surgery back in February with his boss Jose Mourinho claiming his season was done for, but the above suggests he could be available for selection should football resume sometime soon.

Remembering Crystal Palace’s shock of all shocks against Liverpool

When Liverpool took on Crystal Palace in the Premier League at Selhurst Park on May 5th 2014, the slip had happened.

Steven Gerrard had lost his balance and handed the initiative to Manchester City in the Premier League title race but the clash in south London gave them an opportunity to put things right, to steady the ship and pull themselves off the canvas and back into title contention.

A reminder of where we were prior to kick-off. There were two games left apiece and Liverpool and Manchester City each had 80 points, though the latter enjoyed a superior goal difference of nine. All four fixtures were against mid-table sides and this was the only one of the quartet that was away from Anfield or the Etihad.

A win was critical. A win was Brendan Rodgers’ base requirement. It would take the Reds three points clear and put serious pressure on their rival.

Only that goal difference picked and picked at their bravado and with the assumption that City would prevail against Aston Villa and West Ham coupled with a sincere belief based on recent experience that they could blow away sides, a victory was almost taken for granted. What Liverpool wanted was to score as close to ten as possible and eradicate City’s advantage in one fell swoop.

Isolation Busters: The only quiz you need to cure your boredem

By half time, chances had been missed but the away side were a goal to the good with Joe Allen cleverly finding space in the box and heading in a Gerrard corner. Eight minutes after the break their lead was doubled as Sturridge scuffed one home and when Suarez fired in his 31st of the season the impossible dream seemed slightly plausible.

“The game is won. Now it’s all about how many Liverpool can score,” the commentator intoned and judging by the Merseysider’s intent the answer could, potentially, have been 10. Liverpool attacked relentlessly, committing men forward at every opportunity as they desperately sought a fourth that could lead to a fifth and from there… Well, who knew?

Palace, though, under Tony Pulis, simply did not give up. It wasn’t in the manager’s nature and having steadied the ship in south London, he made a series of substitutions to capitalise on the wealth of space now appearing in his opponent’s back third.

With ten minutes to go Damien Delany blasted home a long-ranger from out of the blue and Liverpool frankly didn’t know what to do. Do they stick or twist? They furrowed on regardless. Two minutes later Dwight Gayle re-directed a low cross past Mignolet and the Liverpool defence went to panic stations. Three weeks earlier the team, club and fan-base were riding the crest of a wave. Seven days earlier they had been flattened by reality.

Now, having summoned up all of their bellicose belief again they were rocked, yet still ahead. Never before had a team so needed to find a central point of sense and reason.

With a schizophrenic strategy of holding on yet simultaneously ploughing forward perhaps it’s not surprising that Palace pulled off the shock of all shocks, leaving it until two minutes to go before Gayle struck again.

It was a twist that held the nation spellbound.

What happened next?

At the final whistle, Luis Suarez cried.

Manchester City duly went on to win their remaining two games to secure their second Premier League title. For Liverpool, their quest continued.

A point on the final day of the season was sufficient to secure 11th for the Eagles; a pleasing outcome considering they won only once from their opening eleven games.
