Manchester United: Red Devils ‘frustrated’ by Borussia Dortmund’s demands for Jadon Sancho

Manchester United are growing “frustrated” by Borussia Dortmund’s demands for Jadon Sancho, reports say.

Man United are not giving up on signing Sancho this summer, despite Dortmund sporting director Michael Zorc insisting the deal is dead.

According to ESPN, the Red Devils are fed up with the fact negotiations are taking so long, while United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward and chief transfer negotiator Matt Judge are annoyed they have to work through third-party agent Marco Lichtsteiner.

Dortmund wanted to reach an agreement by August 10 to give them plenty of time to find a replacement but United failed to meet their deadline.

Sources also told ESPN that club bosses at Old Trafford are concerned by the quoted agent fees and wage demands from the player’s representatives.

Sancho, 20, was the club’s top scorer last term, finishing the season with a tally of 20 goals and 18 assists to his name (via WhoScored).

The Bundesliga giants have slapped a €120m (£100m) price tag on his head after his impressive performances, but the Red Devils are trying to drive down a deal in the summer.

Both clubs remain poles apart on their valuations for the 11-cap England international right winger, who reunited with his teammates in time for their pre-season training camp in Switzerland this week.

It seems as though nothing much has changed as they still have to agree a transfer fee, agent fees and personal terms with Sancho, although personal terms will not be a problem, according to Italian transfer guru Fabrizio Romano.

While it would be far easier if United could talk to Dortmund directly, rather than being forced to work with intermediaries, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has very little choice if he wants to sign his top target in the summer, unless he would really rather sign Barcelona flop Ousmane Dembele instead.

Contrary to some reports, talks are still ongoing between the two clubs, and the Red Devils are confident they can reach an amicable agreement.

United fans, do you think Ed Woodward will sign Sancho this summer? Let us know your views in the comments below!

Aston Villa must be ruthless with Ahmed Elmohamady next summer

As the dust settles on another hectic transfer window, Aston Villa’s attentions will already have turned towards their plans for the following year.

Big decisions will have to be made, not just in terms of the kinds of signings that need to be made, but also which of Dean Smith’s current first-team squad need to be sold.

And one man whose future is really up for debate, is Ahmed Elmohamady. The Egypt international’s contract at Villa Park comes to an end in the summer of 2021, meaning that he will be free to negotiate a pre-contract with foreign clubs in January and thus eventually seeing him leave on a free transfer when his deal expires.

Whilst the right-back has proven to be an astute piece of business since arriving from Hull City in 2017 – he has made an impressive 117 appearances for Villa – the time is surely right for the club to say goodbye to him.

At 33, he’s way past the peak years of his career, and whilst he’s done well in terms of his longevity thus far, if Smith is intent on ensuring his side push on and establish themselves as a top ten club, then making ruthless decisions on players like Elmohamady have to be made.

The £25k-a-week earning ace has been a reliable performer and welcome dressing room presence for Smith, with the Villa boss waxing lyrical about the veteran right-back when he penned an extension to his deal in 2019.

He said: “He’s deserved it for his performances, which is what all players deserve to get new contracts from. He was integral to the 10-game winning run we had at the end of last season to get into the playoffs. If you captain a country like Egypt, you have to be a certain type of character and player. He’s established himself in our dressing room and the English game and he’s a very well respected and good player to have in our squad.”

With Villa also spending decent money on Matty Cash from Nottingham Forest, it already feels like the club are moving in a fresh and new direction. When Elmohamady’s contract comes to its end, the Midlands side should just bid a fond adieu.

Michael Olise the perfect Leeds United buy for Marcelo Bielsa

It wouldn’t be a deadline day without some drama at Leeds United.

The Whites have been linked to a plethora of players including Todd Cantwell and Louie Sibley, but now it seems as though they’re in the market for a new young star in the shape of Michael Olise.

The French U18 international has already made a big impact on the senior game despite only being a teenager. He has appeared 32 times for Reading, including four outings this season that have seen him rack up three goal contributions as the Royals got off to the perfect start to the season, picking up 12 points from a possible 12.

Olise certainly looks to be a talented player, and the fact that he has France U18 caps shows just how highly-rated he is, but aside from his talent, he has another quality that will make potentially make him a Bielsa favourite.

Olise is incredibly versatile being able to play as either an attacking or defensive midfielder as well as on either flank, and that is a trait that Bielsa values extremely highly.

Just look at how much Bielsa loves Stuart Dallas, the Northern Irishman can play in so many positions, anywhere across the midfield and at either full-back spot, and that versatility aided him towards starting 45 out of 46 games last season.

The £4.05m-rated ace is like an attacking version of Dallas, he’s a swiss army knife of a footballer who can be deployed in almost any attacking role as well as in the midfield.

At just 18 he’s a player that Bielsa could mould into anything he wants, and his offensive output so far this season certainly suggests that he has what it takes to become a Premier League player, with his one goal and two assists in four games helping Reading into the automatic promotion spots in the early knockings of the season.

Five realistic signings Newcastle United should target this summer

Newcastle United had a fairly moderate end to last season – the club finished their campaign in 13th place, having accumulated 44 points in Steve Bruce’s first season, as well as making the FA quarter-final against Manchester City.

Overall it may be a season to forget for the Magpies, whose proposed takeover bid from the Saudi Arabian Private Investment Fund continues to play out – the fans will be hoping that a deal will be met soon so that the club can start their new life away from Mike Ashley and begin to build a team under new owners.

To do so now, however, will be a tasking effort, as the current financial climate in football, thanks to the effects of COVID-19 has caused many clubs to be forced to sell their best performers – meaning that if Newcastle finds themselves in a financially positive position with or without new owners, they could find themselves signing some great players for great prices if hopeful.

So, what would be the most realistic signings for the club to make?

Ryan Sessegnon

Soccer Football – Champions League – Group B – Bayern Munich v Tottenham Hotspur – Allianz Arena, Munich, Germany – December 11, 2019 Tottenham Hotspur’s Ryan Sessegnon celebrates scoring their first goal REUTERS/Andreas Gebert

The youngster only managed six league appearances for Tottenham last season, and will likely be aiming for regular football this coming season, something which may not come if he were to stay at Spurs.

With a current market value of £22.5 million, the Toon could try to negotiate a possible loan deal or even a permanent transfer depending on Spurs’ view on the player. Sessegnon is a versatile player, and currently, Newcastle has Danny Rose occupying at Left-Back, meaning that if Sessegnon were to join Newcastle, he could find himself playing in a more attacking position such as Left Midfield, or even muscle his way into Left-Back over Rose, who is now 30.

A move to Newcastle could be a wise one for the 20-year-old, and he would be a welcome addition to Steve Bruce’s side who have been heavily linked with the player over the past few weeks.

Harry Wilson

The 23-year-old Welsh international has struggled to break into Liverpool’s first-team given the world-class talent that the club already possesses. Wilson has had previous loan spells, most recently last season at Bournemouth where he scored 7 goals for the club.

His previous loan spells at Derby and Hull were also very successful – with his time with the Rams being his best season during the 18/19 campaign.

The winger scored 16 goals with 4 assists during his season on loan at Derby and showed fans the talent and potential that he has. Newcastle would make a great fit for Wilson, and would likely get the game time he deserves at the club – but the Magpies will face competition if they were to secure his signature, with Premier League new boys Leeds also keen on signing the youngster on loan.

Callum Wilson

It is likely that key players for Bournemouth, such as Callum Wilson, will leave the club this summer after their relegation. Having played in the Premier League for some seasons now, Wilson has established himself as a quality Premier League goalscorer – and has attracted the attention of many clubs over the years.

Newcastle has been linked with a move for the player but will have some negotiating to do after it was reported Steve Bruce may have as little as £30 million to spend this summer given the failed takeover.

The 28-year-old scored only 8 goals this season in what was a poor campaign for the striker, but his ability and goalscoring prowess would offer better options upfront for the club, with Joelinton only managing 2 league goals.

Jeff Hendrick

The 28-year-old Ireland international is currently a free agent after his contract expired with Burnley at the end of this season, and Newcastle are already in to try and agree on a deal with the midfielder for his services according to the Daily Mail.

Having played 24 league games for Burnley this season, Hendrick had a moderate season, averaging a 75.6% pass completion rate, but would offer the Magpies bundles of Premier League experience for their midfield.

With the current financial climate in football, a free transfer for a player of Hendrick’s ability and experience would be a no brainer for the club and could save them some important funds to invest in areas of the squad that need it most.

Giacomo Bonaventura

A name that may not be known too well to the Newcastle faithful, and possibly an ambitious but not unrealistic transfer – Bonaventura has only until the end of August before his contract with AC Milan expires – and the Magpies could get an extremely talented and experienced midfielder at all levels of the game could be captured on a free transfer, or for a cut-price due to the ending of his contract.

The 30-year-old scored 3 goals with 5 assists this season in 29 league appearances – and averaged an 85.6% pass completion rate. Bonaventura would be a fantastic signing for the Toon, and Bruce and the club should certainly make an offer for him.

Aston Villa exit for Jota is a stark reminder of Suso’s nightmare

As confirmed by the club’s official website, Jota has left Aston Villa just a year after joining the club.

What’s the word?

The Spaniard was one of a number of signings made by the club’s former sporting director, Suso, in the summer of 2019, but ended up making just 16 competitive appearances at Villa Park.

Now, the club have confirmed that they have reached a mutual agreement with the 29-year-old to terminate his contract, just days before the end of the transfer window in the Premier League.

A reminder of Suso’s Villa disaster

Well, that was certainly a surprise. Given that Jota had featured twice in the Carabao Cup this season – albeit as a second-half substitute – the termination of his contract has come out of the blue.

But when you look at his overall contribution – and that word is used very lightly – it’s just another reminder of how badly Suso got it wrong last summer. Reports suggested that Villa paid around £4m to sign him from rivals Birmingham, and when you factor that into the £25k-a-week wages he was earning for more than a year, the club shelled out a total of £5.7m for Jota.

Dean Smith’s side spent big money as they embarked on their first season back in the Premier League, and were it not for a late season rally and a truly huge victory over Arsenal, they would have been playing Championship football again.

Despite their rise to safety, Suso’s mistakes in the transfer market shouldn’t be forgotten. The fact that he was replaced by Johan Lange earlier in the summer is a testament to that.

But having been around for just one year, Jota is the ultimate symbol of the former Villa sporting director’s failings whilst at the club.

Spurs fans slam Moussa Sissoko after Birmingham performance

Despite having to undergo knee surgery at the start of the calendar year, Moussa Sissoko proved himself to be one of the first names on the team-sheet under both Mauricio Pochettino and Jose Mourinho at Tottenham last season.

When fit, he played in every single game for the north London side barring the Carabao Cup defeat to Colchester United, eventually racking up a total of 35 appearances across all competitions.

But with the arrival of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg from Southampton, Sissoko’s starting place is under threat, and after being given the opportunity to play from the off against Birmingham City in pre-season on Saturday, he didn’t seem to take his chance.

After seeing his performance, Spurs fans took to Twitter to criticise the midfielder for his display.

A couple of Spurs supporters suggested Sissoko isn’t good enough to be playing for the club, and that he should be sold, with one fan even saying that he should have gone a long time ago.

Another couple of fans even expressed their relief at seeing Sissoko being substituted for Hojbjerg during the game.

The versatile Sissoko is the kind of player arguably every team in the Premier League needs. He may not be the most flashy, or one to notch up plenty of goals and assists, but he can be relied upon to play anywhere where the manager needs him.

Last season even saw him fill in at right-back on occasion, and there is a lot of value to keeping him in the squad. He may not be the man to lead Spurs to a top-four finish, but he is the definition of a role player who can offer Jose Mourinho a lot of different uses.
