Glasgow Rangers boss Steven Gerrard is a tactical genius who doesn’t get the credit he deserves

Glasgow Rangers ran riot over their arch-rivals Celtic as a Connor Goldson brace secured the victory at Parkhead on Saturday afternoon. It’s fair to say that Rangers fans are absolutely loving what Steven Gerrard is doing at the club, but perhaps the Gers boss deserves far more credit than he has been getting in recent weeks.

Gerrard’s side crushed Celtic in a convincing 2-0 away win at Celtic Park at the weekend. In doing so, the Liverpool legend became the first manager to steer the Ibrox outfit to back-to-back away league wins against their rivals since March 1997 under Walter Smith.

It’s worth remembering that Brendan Rodgers, who was in charge of Celtic at the time, was “surprised” to see his former captain linked to the vacant manager’s job at Rangers. How the tables have now turned.

The Light Blues have improved drastically since the last campaign, that much is already clear, as they are currently enjoying a 14-game unbeaten run, stretching back to the 1-0 win over Aberdeen at the start of the season. In contrast, the Gers had already been humiliated at home by Celtic at this stage last season. And they seem to be getting even better with every passing week.

It’s obvious for all to see that the Ibrox outfit have massively improved defensively, as Neil Lennon’s side failed to register a single shot on target in the first Old Firm derby of the season.

The Rangers boss was described as a “tactical genius” by lifelong fan and former defender Alan Hutton after Glen Kamara “nullified” the attacking threat of Celtic wing-back Jeremie Frimpong. He told Football Insider: “It was really a bit of tactical genius from Gerrard to use Kamara’s energy up and down the pitch to stop one of their main threats on the day.”

Per SofaScore, the 24-year-old won seven out of nine ground duels, whilst he made three tackles, one clearance and one interception. A look at his heatmap shows a hub of activity on the left wing, which shows that he put in a defensive shift. Perhaps what is most telling is the fact that he wasn’t dribbled past at all.

When you consider the fact that Gerrard is juggling domestic and European competitions this season, only then does it become clear that he is actually doing a brilliant job.

Most importantly, the award-winning manager, who was named The Scottish Premiership Manager of the Month for August after guiding the Gers to five wins and a draw, seems to have changed the mindset and mentality of his team, after they came up short as Celtic were confirmed as Scottish champions for the ninth season in a row last term. The Bhoys were 13 points clear of their nearest challengers when the campaign came to a premature close.

Former Rangers defender David Weir told The Daily Record that “the Rangers squad is in a really good place right now.”

“But what’s really interested me has been the way Rangers have reacted after the win. It’s been very low keen with none of the players getting over excited on social media.

“They’ve learned from what happened last December when maybe they were guilty of getting carried away. It’s much more business like this time and I like that. I think it’s promising.”

Whilst there is still a long way to go, if Gerrard’s side can regain the title, maybe then – and only then – will Gerrard finally get the full credit he deserves.

AND in other news, Glasgow Rangers must take a gamble on long-term target Jack Wilshere…

Newcastle United: Magpies expected to make offer for Bournemouth striker Callum Wilson

Newcastle United are expected to make an opening offer to Bournemouth for Callum Wilson, according to the Daily Mail.

As per the outlet, the striker is apparently waiting for the two clubs to agree a deal on his proposed move to St James’ Park.

Sources close to the Cherries have said that they are still waiting for an official approach from the Tyneside club for Wilson, but they expect that an offer is incoming. Indeed, a recent report has suggested that Scotland international Matt Ritchie may be used as part of a deal to potentially lower Wilson’s asking price.

The £18m-valued ace is something of a goal machine when looking at his statistics from his career so far. In 250 games at both club level and for England’s under-21 and senior teams, Wilson has scored a relatively impressive 92 goals (via Transfermarkt), meaning that he find the net every two to three matches on average.

Comparing his figures to Newcastle strikers Andy Carroll, Dwight Gayle and Joelinton in the Premier League in 2019/20, not only did Wilson score more goals (eight) than all of them combined, but he also averaged the most shots (1.6) per game (per Whoscored), highlighting his eye for goal.

With Bournemouth getting relegated to the Championship from the top flight at the end of last season, the 28-year old may well be available for a cut-price fee, and so it seems like a no-brainer that Steve Bruce should go out and sign him for the Magpies.

Spurs: Giovani Lo Celso out of action for Argentina %%sep%% %%page%% %%sitename%%

According to an update by Alasdair Gold, Tottenham star Giovani Lo Celso has been withdrawn from the Argentina squad with the same injury that kept him out of Spurs’Â6-1 win against Man United.Â

Lo Celso, who was recently picked for his national side to play against Bolivia and Ecuador over the next week, will now miss their World Cup qualifying encounters.

Football.London correspondent Gold, confirmed the news on TwitterÂ- potentially issuing a less than favourable update for Tottenham and Jose Mourinho.

The 24-year-old, since signing on a permanent deal from Real Betis, has established himself as a core member of the team – making 28 Premier League appearances last season in total.

In that time, he notched two assists for the Lilywhites, becoming a viable midfield option under Mourinho.

However, so far this season, the star man has been in and out of the team due to fitness issues, playing just two matches so far.

Now, as per this update from Gold, Tottenham could be without the ‘exciting’ ace for longer as he works to overcome a niggling thigh injury.

While this could come as a blow for Spurs and Mourinho, there is also reason to be positive given the plethora of options in midfield at the moment.

During the win at Old Trafford last weekend, Tanguy Ndombele, Pierre-Emile-Hojbjerg and Moussa Sissoko were utilised to devastating effect.

Ndombele in particular has shone since being given a chance to perform, and his presence could mitigate the loss, even if the South American has proved extremely useful.

Spurs fans, is Lo Celso a crucial cog in Jose Mourinho’s system? Have your say in the comments down below…

Brighton & Hove Albion: Bernardo wanted by three clubs for potential loan move

Brighton defender Bernardo is attracting interest from three clubs amid rumours of a potential loan exit from the Amex Stadium.

Sky Sports reported that the Seagulls are in talks with Turkish champions Istanbul Basaksehir over a possible season-long loan for the 25-year-old, with Premier League duo West Ham and Newcastle also looking at the left-back as a potential recruit.

Left-back Bernardo has made 43 appearances in two years at Brighton but, having started 19 Premier League games in his first season at the club, he made just seven league starts last term, with Dan Burn often preferred by Graham Potter on the left flank.

With the ex-Wigan defender more conventionally a centre-back, Bernardo is actually the only natural left-back in the Seagulls’ first team squad, although it is perhaps an indication of his current standing that Potter would rather play a central defender at left-back than the Brazilian, who is a natural fit for the role.

The 25-year-old’s place could come under further threat from the potential arrival of Rico Henry, with Albion considering a move for the Brentford left-back and the Bees expecting the 23-year-old to leave the Championship club in this transfer window, as per Sussex Live.

In 2019/20, Bernardo actually won more tackles (1.9 to 1.5) and headers (2.2 to 1.9) per game than Henry, so some may argue that the Brentford defender mightn’t necessarily be an upgrade on the Brighton left-back.

It would be understandable if Bernardo wishes to try his luck on loan elsewhere, given that he has struggled for game-time under Potter despite being Brighton’s only genuine left-back.

However, if a loan exit is sanctioned, that leaves the Seagulls manager potentially sweating on getting a deal done for Henry. Otherwise, he will have no option but to utilise Burn at left-back for another season and pray that he doesn’t fall victim to injury or suspension.

Brighton fans, do you think Bernardo should be loaned out or would that be a risky move? Join in the discussion by commenting below!

Leeds may need to revert back to an old transfer plan

Leeds United’s transfer window has been incredibly exciting.

The Whites have signed some absolutely massive names, breaking their transfer record on a Spain international (Rodrigo), while also bringing in a La Liga regular (Diego Llorente) and a German international (Robin Koch).

However, at the beginning of the summer, we weren’t expecting these types of moves.

Indeed, Phil Hay’s initial report on United’s transfer plans ahead of this season stated that the bulk of the club’s business would be centred around signing the best players from the Championship, but as of yet, we’ve not seen any activity that backs that up.

With Hay being one of the most well-connected journalists covering Leeds, we believe that there is at least an element of truth to his report, and if United had a number of Championship players on their radar, they could do worse than reverting back to that original plan if deadline day doesn’t go their way.

If Leeds fail to bolster all the areas they want to strengthen on Monday, they still have until October 16th to do deals with EFL clubs, and that could be a handy extension for the Whites, especially if they have done a lot of scouting and analysis on some top Championship players.

Todd Cantwell, Said Benrahma and Emi Buendia are three that have been linked previously, and with those players yet to leave either Norwich or Brentford, the Whites may yet swoop before the domestic deadline later this month.

Of course, this may largely be dependent on whether or not deadline day goes Leeds’ way, at the moment it looks as though they’re going to sign a winger in the shape of Raphinha, but as the Michael Cuisance deal showed last week, anything can happen with these deals.

Kane and Lo Celso return, still no Alli: Predicted Spurs XI vs Maccabi

Tottenham Hotspur are back in action once again as their quest to qualify for the Europa League ends this evening.

Jose Mourinho’s side welcome Israeli outfit Maccabi Haifa to north London knowing that a victory would see them into the group stage at long last.

Spurs have already played two matches this week, drawing to Newcastle United in the Premier League on Sunday before they defeated arch-rivals Chelsea in the Carabao Cup just two days ago.

With fixtures coming thick and fast, Mourinho has had to rotate his side frequently, so how will the XI look tonight? Here’s what we are predicting…

The Special One could make as many as eight changes from the side that beat the Blues on penalties just 48 hours ago.

Spurs skipper Hugo Lloris remains between the sticks as the issue of physical fitness shouldn’t be a problem for the Frenchman, although there’s a viable alternative in Joe Hart if needed.

Mourinho could revert to a four-at-the-back formation with only Eric Dier keeping his place having picked up the Man of the Match award in midweek. He’s joined by Davinson Sanchez, who replaces Toby Alderweireld.

Whilst both wing-backs are replaced by Ben Davies and Matt Doherty.

In midfield, summer arrival Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg is welcomed back to partner Harry Winks whilst there’s also a place for Giovani Lo Celso in the advanced position.

It means both £40.5m-rated Tanguy Ndombele and fellow Frenchman Moussa Sissoko are dropped, and there’s still no spot for Dele Alli either, though he could feature from the bench.

The only other player to keep his place from midweek is Steven Bergwijn as he pairs with Lucas Moura on the wings whilst through the middle, Harry Kane starts after a rest against Chelsea.

Sergio Reguilon, Serge Aurier, Gedson Fernandes and Japhet Tanganga are likely to be on the bench.

AND in other news, Spurs’ £18m transfer target is shades of Kyle Walker…

Aston Villa could have struck a blow to West Brom by signing Grady Diangana

Aston Villa could have struck a hammer blow to rivals West Brom by landing Grady Diangana in the summer transfer window.

What was the story?

Despite the fact that West Brom had the youngster on loan at the Hawthorns last season during their promotion-winning campaign in the Championship, reports over the summer claimed that Villa were much interested in making a late swoop.

It was suggested that even when Diangana was holding a medical ahead of a proposed £18m move from West Ham, that Dean Smith’s side remained interested in completing a deal for the attacker.

In the end, Diangana did complete his switch to the Baggies, and Villa may feel like it was a missed opportunity.

Bilic in the mud

What better way to make a real statement in the transfer market, than simultaneously sign one of English football’s hottest prospects, as well as getting one over on your bitter rivals.

That could have been the case for Villa had they acted on their late interest in Diangana, and it would have sent a hammer blow to Baggies boss Slaven Bilic ahead of their first season back in the Premier League.

Not only would it have been a shot in the arm for Villa fans, but they also would have left West Brom considerably weaker given that they would have missed one of their stars of the Championship campaign.

Hilariously obscure Premier League players – Can you name them all?

World Class score: 95% | Expert score: 80% | Veteran score: 65% | Intermediate score: 45% | Amateur score: 30% | Try Again: 5%

Last season, Diangana managed an impressive eight goals and seven assists in 31 games across all competitions, and that level of talent would have gone down a treat with Smith.

Instead, they chose to pass the chance over, and whilst Villa are unlikely to lose any sleep over it, they could have got a fine young player too.
