Ele fazia o gol e me abraçava.

Leeds cashed in on Ross McCormack at the perfect time

Earlier this week we spoke about one of Leeds’ worst sales in history in the shape of Kasper Schmeichel, but now it’s time to look at one of the smartest sales the club ever made.

Back in 2014, Ross McCormack was the hottest property outside of the Premier League, he’d just won the Championship Golden Boot and was scoring all types of goals including long-range screamers and picture-perfect free-kicks.

All in all, McCormack scored 58 times for Leeds, and that made him a highly-coveted player at that level.

Unfortunately, Leeds weren’t the force they are today, and the Scot was ripe for the picking for any club with bigger ambitions, and eventually, newly-relegated Fulham signed him for £11m as they tried to navigate their way out of the Championship at the first time of asking.

Unfortunately, it didn’t quite go that way for Fulham or McCormack. The Scot was the London club’s top scorer, netting 17 in the league, but the team was too reliant on him, finishing 17th at the end of the season.

It was more of the same next season, McCormack bagged 21 times as Fulham finished 20th, and his good goal return earned him another big-money move, joining Aston Villa for £12m.

Meanwhile, Leeds were busy unearthing a striker better than McCormack with Chris Wood winning a Championship Golden Boot of his own before getting a Premier League move.

McCormack’s move to Aston Villa signalled the start of a huge decline. He would only score three goals for the Villans before being slammed for his fitness and becoming a forgotten man at Villa Park.

What followed was a litany of unprofessional behaviour, he missed training because his gate at his house wouldn’t open and was pictured looking out of shape asleep on a sofa in Magaluf just weeks after his Villa contract was terminated.

Nowadays he turns out for National League outfit Aldershot Town, and while transfermarkt value him at £1.08m, it’s hard to imagine that any club will pay a fee for him ever again.

Leeds got out at the perfect time, they cashed in and unearthed a better striker just a couple of years before his career went off the rails.

McCormack is undoubtedly one of the most talented players to have turned out at Elland Road in the 2010s, but Leeds can be happy with the fact that they didn’t hold onto him for any longer than they needed to.

Jamie Carragher highlights concerns over Joe Gomez in Virgil van Dijk’s absence

Liverpool have been handed a major blow in their reigning title season as Virgil van Dijk could miss the remainder of the term with ACL damage.

The centre-back picked up the injury in the Merseyside derby, following a tackle from Jordan Pickford in the opening minutes. The Reds must now adapt to their backline without the influential Dutchman, but Anfield legend Jamie Carragher has his doubts.

Speaking to Sky Sports, the ex-defender raised his worries over how Liverpool will cope with such a reduced roster (via The Mirror).

“Dejan Lovren went and they didn’t replace him so they only have three centre-backs and one of those, Joel Matip, is always injured,” he said. “There are question marks now about Joe Gomez. So there is no doubt that Liverpool had to go big in the transfer market.”

Can Gomez step up in van Dijk’s absence?

After their 7-2 defeat to Aston Villa, a draw at Goodison Park and now their top centre-back sidelined, hope will be bleak in the red district of Merseyside. With Joel Matip also reported to have picked up an injury, it’s ultimately down to Gomez to command the backline and step up to the plate.

It’s likely Jurgen Klopp will be forced to play Fabinho alongside the Englishman, with fellow Three Lions international Jordan Henderson filling the empty No.6 slot. The versatile Brazilian recently played in defence alongside van Dijk and put in a solid shift, but it may be a lot to ask of him to keep up appearances for potentially the entire season.

Last campaign, the £75million record signing played every minute of Premier League football for the Reds. His influence showed, keeping 15 clean sheets and contributing to six goals (via Transfermarkt). Indeed, it was more than enough to see Liverpool over the line and lift their first ever Premier League trophy – setting a new record for the fastest time, no less.

Tough times for Liverpool ahead

Gomez’s stats for the 2019/20 season were mostly inferior to his defensive partner. Not only did van Dijk look a lot more solid in defence, but he was also much more of a threat going forward. According to WhoScored, the Netherlands international averaged more passes (85.8) and more accurate long balls (5.4) than his teammate, with 71 and 3.7 respectively.

Gomez also fell short with 2.1 clearances to van Dijk’s 4.3 and picked up six more bookings in fewer appearances.

Trusting £36m-rated Gomez to command the same kind of authority as van Dijk is a tall ask. Indeed, he was even criticised by his own teammate Alisson after the Reds’ 3-0 defeat against Barcelona in 2019 after failing to block a Lionel Messi free-kick.

There will be enormous pressure on him to not just perform at the highest standard, but to also ensure he himself doesn’t risk an injury or suspension, which will only further endanger Liverpool’s title chances.

Exclusive: Chris Kirkland claims Liverpool should target James Tarkowski in January

In an exclusive interview with Football FanCast, Chris Kirkland has suggested that Liverpool should target Burnley centre-back James Tarkowski as a potential replacement for Virgil van Dijk.

The Dutch international was ruled out for a significant period after suffering an injury in the Merseyside derby draw against Everton earlier in the season, which has left the Reds a little short of centre-back options.

Dejan Lovren departed for Zenit St Petersburg during the summer and Fabinho, who filled in at centre-back in the first few games following Van Dijk’s injury, recently picked up a hamstring injury of his own.

This has led to youngsters such as Nathaniel Phillips and Rhys Williams featuring at centre-back in recent fixtures, as Jurgen Klopp is often forced to do without the injury-prone Joel Matip.

In the exclusive interview with Football FanCast, Kirkland suggested that the Reds should try and sign Tarkowski to add to their centre-back options, saying:

“Obviously there was a lot of talk about Tarkowski at Burnley. I like him, I think he’s decent. You can’t go, ‘well will he do what Van Dijk does?’ Because that’s impossible, nobody does that.”

Kirkland suggests that there was ‘a lot of talk’ about Liverpool potentially signing the England international, perhaps referencing Liverpool’s reported interest in the defender in January of last year.

At the time, Burnley manager Sean Dyche suggested that the rumours linking his centre-back, who earns £50,000-a-week according to Spotrac, with a move to Anfield were “bizarre” but considering the 27-year-old was described as ‘Burnley’s Virgil van Dijk’ in an article for The Athletic – perhaps he would be the ideal replacement for the former Southampton man while he recovers from injury.

Despite the Turf Moor outfit’s disappointing start to the 2020/21 Premier League season, the Englishman has still averaged an impressive 6.95 rating for his performances in the top-flight so far, so perhaps Liverpool should target the £25.2 million-rated centre-back in January.

Exclusive: Steve Howey believes Newcastle should have signed Danny Ings

Speaking exclusively to FootballFanCast, Steve Howey has claimed his former side Newcastle should have signed Southampton star Danny Ings.

The England international enjoyed a sparkling campaign last year for Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side, netting 22 Premier League goals and finishing joint-second in the race for the Golden Boot, with Leicester’s Jamie Vardy taking the crown with 23.

When asked by FFC’s James Beavis about which summer signing from another club Newcastle should have made themselves, Howey said: “I don’t think it was this summer in fairness, but I know for a while, a long while, I was singling out Danny Ings. I thought Newcastle could have benefitted from somebody like him. I think Steve McClaren was the manager, and having a quick conversation with Steve, I think the fee was something like £12m and they were quite happy to pay that. Then it went up to £15m, and it was a case of we’re not paying that fee for him.

“For me it would have been him. Having said that, I was really pleased with Callum Wilson. I’ve always liked Callum Wilson, and I like Josh King. But as I said, I think Danny Ings would have been the one.”

Wilson’s start to life on Tyneside has been a very encouraging one, with the former Bournemouth man bagging four goals in six games – the exactly same amount as Ings.

The latter however, appears to have moved up the pecking order at international level, with England manager Gareth Southgate calling him up for the recent friendlies and Nations League clashes.

Valued at £18m by Transfermarkt, Ings could have been a real marquee signing for the Magpies. But as Howey himself points out, Newcastle have still got a very good striker in the shape of Wilson.

Leeds: Orta must sign off on William Saliba January loan move

Leeds United have been tipped to be interested in signing William Saliba on a temporary basis in January. Kevin Campbell believes that the Whites “would love” to bring him to Elland Road as Arsenal hope to see him gain some valuable first team experience (via Football Insider).

The 19-year-old signed for the Gunners in 2019 in a £27million deal, before being loaned back to former club Saint-Etienne. Saliba attracted a lot of attention during his time in France, commanding the spotlight in his transition from youth to first team football.

His former coach Fabio Frasconi tipped the centre-back to “go very far” after likening him to France international Raphael Varane (via Planet Football).

Saliba could mend Leeds injury troubles

If Leeds pursue a move for the teenager then they would be answering a lot of questions raised around their squad right now. The Whites are struggling massively with their squad depth and received a double fitness blow when Robin Koch and Diego Llorente both picked up injuries earlier this month.

Marcelo Bielsa has been forced to use full-back Luke Ayling as a stand-in central defender whilst the duo are sidelined. Although he’s been doing a solid job so far, the boss cannot rely on him to play out of position for months to come.

That’s why signing Saliba would be a huge statement for the club. Not only would they be plugging a leak in their defence but the Arsenal prospect would relish in the chance to play regular first team football in the Premier League.

The Gunners clearly have big plans for the youngster, else they wouldn’t have spent such a large sum on such a young player. There’s likely no chance of a permanent deal being offered, which suits Leeds considering they spent a hefty amount in the previous transfer window.

Recruiting Saliba on loan would be the ideal move as it wouldn’t affect Koch’s place in the squad next season but it would still help keep them afloat this campaign.

Exclusive: Marlon Harewood delivers verdict on Aston Villa summer signing Ollie Watkins

Speaking exclusively to FootballFanCast, former Aston Villa ace Marlon Harewood has insisted he hasn’t been surprised by the form of summer signing Ollie Watkins.

The 24-year-old arrived from Championship side Brentford to reunite with Dean Smith at Villa Park, and has hit the ground running at his new club, bagging eight goals in just 11 games – that of course includes his memorable hat-trick in the 7-2 thrashing of Liverpool.

Now, Harewood has given his thoughts on the club’s new centre-forward, saying: “I’m not surprised. He’s a top-class player in the striker situation, and it’s good to see him doing what he’s doing. Obviously, the players around him they’ll want to do well as well. It compliments him in positions where he’s going to score goals.”

Watkins’ arrival and good form has been a welcome shot in the arm for Villa this season, with Smith’s side managing just 41 goals in 38 games last season in the Premier League.

Their campaign wasn’t helped by the fact Wesley suffered a knee injury at the start of the year and is only just working his way back up to full fitness, so having the man from Brentford just click as a new player straight away has been music to the ears of Smith.

Whether he can keep up his consistency over the course of his first season in the Premier League remains to be seen, but all the early signs point to him doing exactly that.

He’s come up with some big goals against the likes of Liverpool and Arsenal, and with Villa flying high and even seemingly up for a potential challenge for a European spot, Watkins could hold the key.
