Man Utd set to sign Tom Heaton

Manchester United are reportedly set to sign Aston Villa goalkeeper Tom Heaton on a free transfer in the coming weeks, meaning mass changes could occur at Old Trafford this summer.

What’s the story?

According to well-known journalist and transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, the 35-year-old shot-stopper is set to re-join his boyhood club after a disappointing spell at Villa Park.

Romano claims that Heaton is scheduled to undergo a medical with the Old Trafford outfit before signing a contract until 2023 with the option of a one-year extension.

De Gea needs to watch out

United’s goalkeeping conundrum has rumbled on for several seasons now, with David de Gea’s steady decline since the 2018 World Cup causing several major talking points.

The Spain international has made multiple high-profile mistakes between the sticks for the 20-time English champions over the last few campaigns, and the emergence of Dean Henderson has only served to add more cause for debate.

De Gea returned to his homeland for personal reasons midway through 2020/21, meaning the young keeper had a chance to impress between in the starting XI week in week out.

However, Henderson failed to take his chance, making a string of errors, including a horrendous performance against United’s bitter rivals Liverpool.

With the Red Devils looking to regain their spot at the summit of the Premier League, addressing their goalkeeping problem is expected to be high up on Ole Gunnar Solksjaer’s priority list this summer, and the potential arrival of Heaton could spell bad news for their current crop of keepers.

The Villa man is highly unlikely to come in and be United’s No.1, given he spent the entire 2020/21 campaign playing understudy to Emiliano Martinez, but his addition will leave Solksjaer with four shot-stoppers to choose from.

Sergio Romero is set to depart, while the £19.8 million rated De Gea (as per Transfermarkt) and England international Henderson will either fight it out to be first-choice, or both face the axe, leaving to door open for a new, top-quality goalkeeper to make his mark at Old Trafford.

It could bring an end to De Gea’s ten-year stay at United, where he’s won one Premier League title, one FA Cup, one League Cup and a Europa League crown, and mark a new chapter in the club’s eventful goalkeeping history.

By bringing in Heaton, United now have an adequate backup goalkeeper to Henderson if they do decide to move on from De Gea, and after his recent performances, that would not come as a shock at all.

Liverpool fans want Neco Williams to leave

A number of Liverpool supporters are keen for the Reds to sell Neco Williams this summer, following a report surrounding his future.

Jurgen Klopp will be hoping to make a few new signings in the next transfer window, with Ibrahima Konate already arriving from RB Leipzig.

While plenty of focus may be on players arriving in the summer, other individuals could head the other way, moving on to pastures new.

One player who has been linked with an exit is Williams, with the Liverpool Echo reporting that as many as five clubs are eyeing up a move for him.

The Welshman made just three starts and a total of six appearances in the Premier League last season, very much playing second fiddle to Trent Alexander-Arnold at right-back.

These Liverpool fans took to Twitter to provide their thoughts on the situation, saying a move away makes total sense.

Tendulkar waltzes away to his 25th Test hundred

India were 480/9 at the end of the third day’s play in the third and final Test match against Australia at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai, on Tuesday

Santhosh S20-Mar-2001India were 480/9 at the end of the third day’s play in the third and final Test match against Australia at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai, on Tuesday. They lead by 89 runs going into the fourth day tomorrow. India scored 269 runs, losing eight wickets in the 90 overs bowled today.India resumed at a commanding score of 211/1. But Glenn McGrath drew first blood for Australia with the very first ball of the day; SS Das trapped in front of the wicket on his overnight score of 84. In the seventh over of the day, McGrath went on to dismiss VVS Laxman (65), caught by Mark Waugh at second slip.Sourav Ganguly who had a tense stay at the crease before lunch, troubled by Gillespie’s pace and bounce, was the next man to be dismissed. He made 22 runs off 76 balls and never looked convincing today, before playing a flashy shot outside the off stump to give Gilchrist a simple catch off the bowling of McGrath.Meanwhile, Sachin Tendulkar was cruising along watchfully, punishing the loose balls to the fence. Rahul Dravid who joined him in the middle was in attacking mood as the two batsmen went on reaping runs off some listless Aussie bowling in the post lunch session. Dravid’s good form was evident in his stroke play and in the assurance he has shown in the middle as he smashed Gillespie for a straight six.Soon after tea, Tendulkar lofted Colin Miller to the mid-wicket fence; the mistimed stroke went up in the air straight to Michael Slater. But Slater misjudged the flight of the ball completely and over ran forward to miss out an opportunity to dismiss the most sought after wicket in international cricket. Slater’s misery in the field on this tour was truly compounded.Aussies were losing their way as Gilchrist failed to latch on to a leg side catch offered by Dravid off the bowling of Gillespie. Tendulkar reached his 25th Test hundred in grand style, lofting Miller for a straight six. The crowd got to their feet to applaud the little master.Jason Gillespie was bowling with a big heart and rewards were due to him. Gilchrist and Gillespie got together to dismiss Dravid and Tendulkar in the space of 26 balls. Dravid made 81 attractive runs off 140 balls with the help of six and a dozen boundaries. He and Tendulkar added 169 runs for the fifth wicket in 42.2 overs.Tendulkar waltzed his way to 126, punctuating his knock with two sixes and 15 boundaries before being dismissed. The highlight of his innings were the three fours he scored off an over from Shane Warne. There were two little gems to the fine leg fence off Warne who was bowling around the wicket. This prompted Warne to bowl a bouncer and Tendulkar dispatched it to the third man fence with a stylish upper-cut.Gillespie’s telling spell of 7-4-15-2 made a difference to the outcome of the day’s play, enabling a late order collapse of the Indian innings. Warne who bowled well all through the day was at last rewarded with the wicket of Sameer Dighe (4), trapped in front of the wicket.Colin Miller who had trundled all along, being whacked to the fence by Tendulkar and Dravid, managed to get amongst wickets. In fact he claimed two, Zaheer Khan (4) caught and bowled and Harbhajan Singh (2) caught by Mark Waugh at slip. At close of play, Sairaj Bahatule was unbeaten on four with Nilesh Kulkarni who is yet to open his account.

Pundit surprised at low Jack Harrison fee

After spending three seasons on loan at Elland Road it appears that Jack Harrison will eventually make it a permanent move this summer and former Leeds United midfielder David Norris is pleasantly surprised at how cheap he will be.

The fee is reported to be around £10 million and considering clubs will be looking to receive as much money as possible to ease the fall of losing money in the season just gone, that seems a relatively low fee for Harrison.

This is the first season that Harrison has spent in the Premier League despite signing for Manchester City back in 2018 when he arrived from one of the fellow City Group clubs, New York City, and he has taken to life in the top-flight with ease having managed eight goals and assists in 36 games.

Considering some of the astronomical fees that get spent on average players nowadays, £10 million would be a low asking price from City and something they may regret, according to Norris, who spoke exclusively to The Transfer Tavern:

“I’m really surprised, especially with the figures that get thrown around these days and what players have gone for in the last couple of years. I’m very surprised to hear that City have accepted such a low fee, you’d expect it to be double that.

“He’s now proven that he can do a job and these days that sort of fee is nothing considering the potential of the player, and I don’t think it’s much of a risk.”

Harrison never appeared to have a chance at Manchester City considering the calibre of players like Raheem Sterling, Riyad Mahrez and Phil Foden were ahead of him in the pecking order.

Man City will be hoping that the decision to let Harrison go does not backfire like it has with Jadon Sancho who they also allowed to leave without being given a chance in the first team and is now one of the best wingers in the world.

Haynes names Border as his greatest opponent

Desmond Haynes will always be regarded as one of the finest openers of all time

Special Correspondent05-May-2002Desmond Haynes will always be regarded as one of the finest openers of all time. The partnership that he forged with Gordon Greenidge played a major role in making the West Indies the most fearsome side in world cricket through most of the 80s. But surprisingly for a man of his stature, Haynes still carries a few regrets.”I wanted to score more than 8032 Test runs and also score two more centuries in Test cricket to have 20 hundreds beside my name. My average is 40, but I wanted to make it 42. That would have been satisfying for me and I could have retired without any regret. But the cricket board of the country for which I played no less than 116 Test matches didn’t give me the opportunity to do so,” he said in an interview at the Kensington Oval, Barbados.”And yes, I wanted to be the skipper of the West Indies cricket team (after Viv Richards). But the baton was handed over to Richie Richardson. Then why did they sent me to England as the vice-captain of the team? I am still trying to find the answers to these questions. Ask anybody in these islands. You will know that all of them are aware of the fact that the board curbed the international careers of the two openers – Gordon and me – without any reason,” Haynes added.Since the departure of the two great men, West Indies have struggled to find a decent opening pair. “I felt sorry but the board never asked us to help the youngsters. They could have selected a few talented young openers and asked us to develop them into better quality international openers. Had it happened I would have understood that the board has honoured our efforts, but they did nothing,” a visibly hurt Haynes observed.Probably it was this neglect, that made him turn to fresher pastures. Yes, he is a politician now, aiming to become a senator in two years. But how can the once highest run-getter in one-day cricket suddenly wipe out cricket from his mind? When the conversation veers to the West Indies defeat in the second Test at Port of Spain, Haynes does not mince words.”The way they had lost the Test match in Port of Spain was disgusting. I was surprised to see that they failed to play against this bowling-attack of India. When I met Lara, I asked him, what prevented him from going all out against such a weak Indian attack. If a batsman of his calibre takes singles instead of going after this bowling-attack, why blame the others? And when I heard that he asked the crowd not to sing while he was batting, I could not believe it first. In the Caribbeans, you always associate with the noises and the songs and who knows it better than Brian?” he asked. When asked about his experiences of touring India, he was quick to give his opinions about the poor quality of umpiring before going on to talk about the famous West Indies defeat at Chennai. “We didn’t have so much of live coverage those days and we knew it well that there was always a possibility of us being given out lbw if we had padded the deliveries. Hirwani took 16 wickets against us in his debut Test on a wicket where anything but cricket could be played. Afterwards, we thrashed him so much that you don’t find him any more. Personally, I felt Sivaramakrishnan was a better leg-spinner.”He also had an opinion on India’s legendary all-rounder Kapil Dev that he wished to share. “You say Kapil was a fast bowler? Do you know what Viv (Richards) said about him? Viv used to tell that Kapil was so slow that you couldn’t even go for hooking him!”Haynes and Greenidge had more than five thousand ODI runs under their belts, a record which was overthrown by the Indian pair of Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly. He, though, has no regrets in this regard. “They are playing more matches and will continue to play more. So, they will break more records definitely,” was his prediction. When asked about the best batsman he had played against, Haynes, had no hesitation in naming Allan Border. “I don’t like to praise the Aussies. But I feel Allan was a great batsman. It was never easy to dislodge him and his appetite for runs was just incomparable.”

Claim on Parker’s Fulham future emerges

Scott Parker’s future at Fulham is appearing increasingly uncertain.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by TEAMtalk, who claim that the Fulham hierarchy are unsure if the 40-year-old is the man they would like to lead the club in the Championship next season, as they have been left far from happy with Parker’s comments suggesting he felt let down by the club’s transfer business last season.

It is reported that the former Tottenham Hotspur star’s future at Craven Cottage is shrouded in doubt following his remarks, and it does not appear certain that the manager will still be in charge of the club come August.

Worrying news

Considering the job that Parker has done since taking over at Fulham back in February of 2019, guiding a side that had suffered relegation from the Premier League in their 2018/19 campaign immediately back to the top flight in the 2019/20 season, the prospect that the club could be looking to part with the 40-year-old this summer will undoubtedly come as gutting news for fans.

Despite Parker being unable to steer his side to Premier League survival this season, the fact that the young manager stuck to his ideals and footballing philosophies – notably playing out from the back and keeping possession of the ball – is an extremely promising feather in his cap, as the longer he stays with the team, the more his players will understand how they should be playing the game, bringing a greater chance of success.

Furthermore, with Parker having already proved that he is more than capable of guiding Fulham out of the Championship, sacking a manager with a track record of success in the division prior to a campaign in the second tier, just because of some comments about transfer strategy, would appear to be an extremely petty and, quite frankly, idiotic reason to sack the 40-year-old.

However, only time will tell which way the Fulham owners fall on their decision regarding Parker’s position at the club, during which time fans of the club face a rather anxious wait to see whether the 40-year-old will still be in charge at Fulham come next season.

Stewart given England captaincy for Second Test

Alec Stewart has been appointed England captain for the second and final npower Test Match against Pakistan at Old Trafford which starts on Thursday week. Stewart took over the captaincy midway through the First Test at Lord’s, when Nasser Hussain sustained a thumb injury which has ruled him out of cricket for the next three to four weeks.Stewart said: “I am delighted to have been given the opportunity to captain England on a temporary basis at Old Trafford. It’s a great honour to lead your country, and I much look forward to the game”.Stewart is unworried by the prospect of adding the responsibilities of captaincy to his existing dual role of England batsman and wicketkeeper. “I had no problem with that when I was England skipper for the first time. I did all three jobs during the 1998 Test series against South Africa, which England won. And when you’re put in charge of a good side that’s been winning, it obviously makes captaincy that much easier.”No decision has yet been made on who will captain England in the NatWest Triangular one-day series between England, Pakistan and Australia in June.
