Isam: Bangladesh are playing attacking cricket

Big pictureFrom the outside looking in, Bangladesh trouncing Zimbabwe 5-0 barely caused a blip. There was perhaps a double-take when Pakistan were served 3-0. If they whitewash India on Wednesday, the world will sit up and notice. The 14 men and the support staff on tour here already have. MS Dhoni has admitted his team was outplayed. He has wrestled questions on his captaincy, even bristled momentarily when the critique moved onto selection. R Ashwin, another player of the ‘keep calm’ variety, seemed to feel he was behind enemy lines at the pre-match press conference. He felt compelled to remind everyone that India had won 75% of their matches this season. Whether that was because of the scoreline of the series or the brutal spotlight that is on the team is debatable, but it was clear to see it does have issues to sort out. Besides the headache of why the batsmen who are touted to front up for the 2019 World Cup are misfiring all at once.A lot of the credit should go to Bangladesh. They have won key moments and ensured the momentum never dissipated. There is a pack mentality readily visible among the quicks. So much that India’s batsmen haven’t had any room to breathe. They have been bowled out twice, and the best partnership they have put on – one among only four that have crossed fifty – has been 95.”They’ve owned the Mirpur stadium,” was Ashwin’s assessment. New faces like Mustafizur Rahman, Soumya Sarkar and Litton Das have fit neatly into the one-day structure, while the old faithful Shakib Al Hasan and Mashrafe Mortaza have continued contributing. An 11th win on the trot at home would be the perfect way for them to sign-off in front of the loud, colourful and unabashedly partisan Mirpur crowd.Form guideBangladesh: WWWWW (last five matches, most recent first)

India: LLLWWIn the spotlightWith the squad bursting with performers, Mushfiqur Rahim hasn’t had much to do. He did seal the series with a sparkly cameo that indicated he was finding his best touch again. But perhaps he might like to put in a more substantial performance, considering the scrutiny over his wicketkeeping lately.Shikhar Dhawan has had a decent tour so far. He has restated his case for Test selection, and has taken home a half-century from the second ODI. What he and the rest of the India batting line-up haven’t been able to do is set up a big total. India have spoken about playing freely, a mandate Dhawan quite likes.Team newsBangladesh have added the legspinner Jubair Hossain to their squad for the third ODI. “”He was taken to increase the bowling options,” Faruque Ahmed, the chief selector, told ESPNcricinfo. “We will have a look at the wicket tomorrow and take a call on him.”Bangladesh (probable): 1 Tamim Iqbal, 2 Soumya Sarkar, 3 Litton Das/ Mominul Haque/ Rony Talukdar, 4 Mushfiqur Rahim (wk), 5 Shakib Al Hasan, 6 Sabbir Rahman, 7 Nasir Hossain, 8 Mashrafe Mortaza (capt), 9 Rubel Hossain/Jubair Hossain, 10 Mustafizur Rahman, 11 Taskin AhmedAjinkya Rahane opted to train yesterday after being dropped for the last ODI. The rest of the team went through “a couple of quiet days,” Ashwin said. The morale isn’t as high as it normally is within the Indian camp.India (probable): 1 Shikhar Dhawan, 2 Rohit Sharma, 3 Virat Kohli, 4 Ambati Rayudu/ Ajinkya Rahane/ Stuart Binny, 5 Suresh Raina 6 MS Dhoni (capt &wk), 7 Ravindra Jadeja, 8 R Ashwin, 9 Bhuvneshwar Kumar, 10 Axar Patel, 11 Dhawal KulkarniPitch and conditionsEvery day of play on tour has contained the threat of rain, and the trend doesn’t look to be changing. The players trained under cloudy skies on the eve of the match as well. As far as the pitch is concerned, there might not be much change. It is expected to be a touch slow.Stats and trivia Bangladesh will have 11 consecutive wins at home if they win the third ODI. That will leave them one short of the record held jointly by Pakistan (2000-03), West Indies (1986-89) and Australia (2003-04). This is the fifth time Bangladesh have won five or more consecutive ODIs, the longest being a nine-match streak in 2006. Bangladesh have currently won five back-to-back ODIs – three against Pakistan and two against India. Before this series, India had only lost one match to Bangladesh in a bilateral ODI series (Dhaka, 2004). They have already lost two ODIs in this series.Quotes”If there is no counter, then what can we do? Can we kidnap him?”
“We spoke in the dressing-room just before going out to training [on Tuesday]. We have told to be as serious as we would be if we had lost the first two games. We will not give an inch.”

'Retirement never crossed my mind' – Taylor

Four years of Jerome Taylor’s international career were ravaged by injury, but the fast bowler, who has made a successful return to West Indies’ Test side, says he never thought of giving up the game

Devashish Fuloria02-Oct-2014

Jerome Taylor has taken 18 wickets in five Test matches since his return from a lengthy injury-enforced lay-off•WICB

October 2006. A 22-year-old fast bowler rips through the defences of Michael Hussey, Brett Lee and Brad Hogg at the Brabourne Stadium to become the first West Indian to get a hat-trick in ODIs. The bowler oozes promise and his spell is crucial in West Indies winning the Champions Trophy match by 10 runs.October 2014. The fast bowler, on a comeback trail after a long hiatus, is back at the Brabourne Stadium, as West Indies embark on their third tour to India in three years, and the memory of that hat-trick still fresh in his mind.”How can I forget anything like that? It is there and it will be there for a very long while until I can put something in front of that,” Jerome Taylor said, on the eve of the practice match against India A. “But that was one-day cricket and that’s in the past. There are lot of things that can be achieved in the future. I am actually working on being a better cricketer overall as well.”It has been a tough road for Taylor. His international career was disrupted with a spate of injuries when he was at his peak and there was a 32-month period during which all he played were a couple of domestic T20 matches. Moreover, during this period, his commitment to returning to the fold was questioned by the West Indies Cricket Board. Despite the setbacks, Taylor never thought of giving up the game altogether aside.”That thought [retirement] never crossed my mind,” he says. “It was more of physical challenge than a mental one. I have undergone a lot of stuff to get back to this point. It was a lot of work in the back end and it worked okay for me.”Taylor made a comeback to international cricket earlier this year during the series against New Zealand and has picked up 18 wickets in the five Tests since his return. The current version is not the tearaway fast bowler from five years ago, but Taylor, who is striving for consistency, says he maintains the ability to bowl a heavy ball. The tour of India will be his first full series since his return.”This might be a good series for me,” he says. “If I give a good account of myself against one of the top-ranking teams, that would actually boost my confidence and would help my career move forward. When I look at the Indian team and their batting line-up, yes, you will be put under pressure, but you have to spend hours in the field if you want to hit the straps as soon as possible.”What I do is try to listen to my body and use that as a guide going forward. Your body will tell you whenever something is wrong or right, and as a competitor, you cannot be afraid of expressing yourself in the park. Yes, it is going to stay in the back of your mind, but if you let that take over, then it’s going to hurt so much.”The addition of Taylor, along with Kemar Roach, has given the West Indies pace attack a potency that had been absent for a while. It’s still a new partnership. “I haven’t bowled much with Kemar since he came onto the scene,” Taylor says. “It’s only in the last two Test series that we have got together and it is something that is working really well. We even work together in the nets, we share information and stuff like that. So we are looking forward to whatever challenge lies ahead.”One of the challenges will be the conditions. In Mumbai, where the team plays both its practice matches, the temperatures have hit post-monsoon highs of 35 degrees, with almost 80% humidity. “It’s not a place where you can blast batters out,” Taylor says. Patience will be the key and Taylor knows a thing or two about it.

Scandal-struck Canadian Premier League eyes new stadium

Organisers for a proposed professional T20 league in Canada announced this week that they are seeking a location in the greater Toronto area for a planned $700m, 35000-strong stadium. Roy Singh, the businessman spearheading the project, it is now learnt, was sentenced to prison for four and a half years in 2007 for his role in a multi-million dollar fraud case.According to court documents seen by ESPNcricinfo, Singh, the chairman and chief executive of Canadian Premier League T20 LP, pleaded guilty in 2006 to a charge of “fraud over $5,000.” He was convicted of swindling the now defunct i-Trade Finance Inc., of $8 million ($US 5.25 million) between 2001 and 2003. Roy Singh is an alias for Rohit Ablacksingh, the name listed in court documents. He was released on parole in the summer of 2008, according to news reports in the , despite objections to the parole board from i-Trade’s former president Parker Gallant over Singh’s failure to compensate those affected.”Mr. Singh has been open and frank about his past legal troubles with me,” said Bob Mitchell, president of Canadian Premier League. “What happened occurred more than a decade ago. It has absolutely nothing to do with today. I believe in giving people second chances. Mr. Singh wants the chance to do something great for Canada and cricket. He realises there will always be people who will bring up his past but all he can do is move forward.”The Canadian Premier League web site states that Singh received a 2003 Entrepreneur of the Year award by the Etobicoke Chamber of Commerce and his aggressive entrepreneurial spirit has acted as a driving force for the proposed T20 league and stadium. However, the January 11, 2007 sentence summary for the case that sent Singh to prison, said that he “had no business receiving such an honour,” because Justice A M Gans said Webworx, Singh’s company, “had no business to speak of in the year in question” other than the fraud it was found guilty for.In his capacity as chief executive of Webworx Inc., Singh “through a sophisticated array of paper, faxes, emails and fictional characters, in addition to unseemly acts of ingratiation and self-promotion if not instances of disarming behavior, was able to persuade the executives and employees of i-Trade that Webworx had ongoing and profitable contracts” when in fact no such things existed. Based on false documents through a false identity, Webworx obtained millions in financing from and eventually bankrupted i-Trade. Justice Gans called Singh’s behavior in the case as “Machiavellian in the extreme” and said that time in prison would give him a chance to get “treatment for his seeming sociopathic behavior.”In relation to the Canadian Premier League, Singh and his fellow organizers also stated they were looking for investors in franchises to support a 10-team tournament in Canada, which has been delayed since 2013 and is now targeting an August 2015 start date at a temporary facility until the proposed $700 million stadium plan is approved. According to the press release, each team in the league would have starting line-ups comprised of eight Canadian domestic players and three from overseas.Among those listed on the web site as part of the Canadian Premier League management are West Indian batsman Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Emma Everett, player agent to several West Indian players including Dwayne Bravo. The Canadian Premier League web site and Singh’s social media pages are also flooded with images of Singh posing with public officials and high profile cricket personalities, including Sir Richie Richardson sporting a Canadian Premier League hat alongside Singh, seemingly in an effort to build support for his proposed project. The most recent instance of Canada hosting Test level international players was in May 2012 when a much-hyped exhibition match turned into a major debacle. Local organising group Kat Rose attempted to stage a T20 All-Star game at the Rogers Centre, home of Major League Baseball’s Toronto Blue Jays, with tickets listed at face value from $25 to $199. The projected profits for the event were pinned to targeted gate sales driven by the participation of six Pakistani players, including Misbah-ul-Haq, Saeed Ajmal and Shahid Afridi. The Pakistani players withdrew less than 48 hours before the match when No Objection Certificates could not be secured by the organisers. Brian Lara was also scheduled to play, but pulled out on the morning of the match after he was not paid his match fee prior to the start of the game. Most of the other cricketers who travelled to the event did play, but sued Kat Rose over unpaid match fees as well as reimbursements for flights and accommodation. FICA also attempted to intervene on behalf of 16 international players, including Sanath Jayasuriya, Tino Best, Jacob Oram, Tim Southee, Mark Boucher, Brendan Taylor and Stuart MacGill.

Sunrisers spice up fight for fourth

Sunrisers Hyderabad appeared to be coasting towards their target of 161 after a strong opening stand, but managed to drag it to the last over to win by seven wickets and upset Royal Challengers Bangalore’s plans of making the playoffs

Prasad: Bangalore need to play fearless cricket

Sunrisers Hyderabad appeared to be coasting towards their target of 161 after a strong opening stand, but managed to drag the chase into the last over to win by seven wickets and upset Royal Challengers Bangalore’s plans of making the playoffs. Sunrisers needed 20 off the last two overs but Darren Sammy’s salvo took them through with two balls to spare. Despite the victory, Sunrisers still need other results to go their way, as do Royal Challengers – both have ten points with two remaining games.A predominantly one-sided chase turned competitive at the start of the 17th over, when Sunrisers needed 35 off 24 with nine wickets in hand. David Warner, set on 59, carved a high full toss from Varun Aaron straight to cover and his exit increased the required rate as Yuvraj Singh bowled a tight 18th over, giving away just seven runs. It came down to 17 off ten and a boundary was needed. Naman Ojha then sent the ball soaring over the second tier at deep cover and Aaron had his revenge when Ojha tamely scooped the next ball to cover.Darren Sammy didn’t need any sighters as he bashed his first ball flat over the straight boundary, bringing the equation down to less than a run a ball. He sealed the win by chipping a slower ball from Mitchell Starc over cover, giving Sunrisers a foot in the door as the scramble for fourth place got tighter.Just as pleasing for Sunrisers was the fact that Shikhar Dhawan, who was relieved of the captaincy for the sake of his batting form, scored his first fifty. Sunrisers were dominant in the Powerplay, scoring 51. Dhawan scored boundaries off more conventional strokes while Warner wasn’t afraid to play the reverse sweep against Muttiah Muralitharan. Royal Challengers used five bowlers inside the first ten overs but they had to wait till the 13th over for their first breakthrough. It came via a run-out, as Warner pushed the ball to backward point and set off but Dhawan wasn’t quick enough to beat Yuvraj’s throw. The spinners did well in parts to keep the runs down, but when Warner struck Yuzvendra Chahal for consecutive sixes, the pressure was released. Royal Challengers did well to stay in the game after Warner departed, but 160 was only competitive, but insufficient.Royal Challengers began sluggishly, scoring just two boundaries in the Powerplay. Sunrisers, in contrast, scored nine. Chris Gayle limped his way to 14 before falling cheaply and Yuvraj fell for a chancy 25-ball 21.Royal Challengers managed only 48 off the first ten overs, but in the second half the innings picked up. Kohli took 19 off a Karn Sharma over with big hits down the ground and in two overs, they had scored 31. Sammy leaked 19 off his only over as Kohli and AB de Villiers helped themselves to a six each.Kohli, who hadn’t scored a fifty in the competition, finally got the monkey off his back. He lofted Irfan Pathan over long-on but was caught the following ball in attempting to clear long-off. He wasn’t smiling in the end though, as Royal Challengers were left expecting favours from other sides to go through to the last four.

Zia, Shakeel guide Pakistan to second win

ScorecardPakistan Under-19’s bowling attack restricted England Under-19 to 168, before a 96-ball 63 from Saud Shakeel helped Pakistan to a three-wicket win in Abu Dhabi.Pacers Zia-ul-Haq and Irfanullah Shah led the attack for Pakistan, who after electing to field, bundled England out in 43 overs. The opener Ryan Higgins top-scored with 80 off 84 balls, but received little support from the rest of the batsmen. Zia finished with 3 for 32, while Shah and Karamat Ali chipped in with two wickets each to run through an England batting order in which seven of their players failed to get into double digits.England made a bright start during the chase as the seamer Josh Shaw picked up three early wickets to leave Pakistan rattling at 39 for 4 in the 11th over. But Imam-ul-Haq and Shakeel led the recovery, adding 71 for the fifth wicket, before the former fell for 49 in the 31st over. Saifullah Khan was immediately dismissed in the next over, but Shakeel and Zafar Gohar contributed 53 for the seventh wicket to all but seal Pakistan’s second straight win of the tournament.

Retrospecto do São Paulo

Tempo afastado do futebol
“É muito estranho, eu estava trabalhando, junto com o Pássaro, é estranho estar longe. De uma forma geral, foi tudo muito bem conduzido tanto pelo Raí quanto pelo Mancini, deram uma motivada geral em todos, inclusive no torcedor, que é muito importante para esses meninos. Ter o direito de errar. Estão recuperando a autoestima, é um passo gigantesco para as conquistas.”
