Celtic fans react as Filip Benkovic is left out of Leicester’s first-team

Celtic fans would love to see former loanee Filip Benkovic back at Parkhead, after he was left to play with Leicester’s Under-23 side.

The defender spent last season on loan at Celtic Park, impressing in a spell that was blighted by an ankle injury. The centre-back played 27 times for the Celts, and plenty of supporters would like to see him add to that tally in this campaign.

The former Dinamo Zagreb man played the full 90 minutes for the Foxes’ U-23 team on Monday, but could only inspire his side to a 1-1 draw with Blackburn, and the Hoops faithful simply can’t believe that such a talented player isn’t in the senior side.

With just under two weeks left of the window, Neil Lennon’s men are likely to add a few new faces before the September 2 deadline, and with the defensive deficiencies rearing their ugly head last week against Cluj, fans are hoping Benkovic is one of those faces.

These fans would love to see him back in the Hoops, even if it does mean dealing with former manager Brendan Rodgers. It’s safe to say their ex-Boss isn’t on the best of terms with the Parkhead faithful after his exit in February.

Here’s what they had to say about a potential Benkovic reunion on Twitter…

Arsenal’s Lucas Torreira shares a brilliant Instagram snap with Luis Suarez

[ad_pod ]

Lucas Torreira has successfully returned back to Arsenal after his extended holiday and has already played his first minutes before the official start of the new 2019/20 Premier League season.

The Uruguayan midfielder took to the Camp Nou pitch to face Barcelona in the Joan Gamper Trophy clash that saw the Catalans clinch a narrow 2-1 victory over the Gunners.

Still, it was a really close game and Arsenal were even in front come the end of the first half. Unfortunately, the Blaugrana managed to claw back into the game and take the trophy home for their cabinets.

[ad_pod ]

Torreira took to

/B0x7z6OB1nV/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link” data-lasso->Instagram on Monday after the clash and posted a brilliant snap with Luis Suarez, his rival on the pitch but also his Uruguayan compatriot and close friend.

He even captioned it as “the happiness of a child who enjoys the time with his idol”, tagging Suarez in the process.

Of course, Barcelona’s superstar responded in a similar manner, thanking his friend for the talk they’ve shared at Camp Nou.

The duo also participated in this year’s iteration of the Copa America with their nation. Unfortunately, they were eliminated in the quarter-finals by the eventual finalists Peru.

Torreira played a total of four games throughout the competition but unfortunately without any goals or assists to his name.

Southampton’s summer transfer window rated, and it could get even better

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Opinion series, which provides analysis, insight and opinion on any issue within the beautiful game, from Paul Pogba’s haircuts to League Two relegation battles…

Southampton left it extremely late, but they did get a fourth arrival through the door on deadline day in the form of Augsburg centre-back Kevin Danso, even if it was only officially announced on Friday morning.

But how did their window rate as a whole?

Saints were quick off the blocks with the arrivals of Moussa Djenepo and Che Adams for £14m and £15m respectively before we had even entered July, and the duo look to be exactly what the south coast outfit needed after last season.

They are two powerful and pacy players that fit perfectly into the style Ralph Hasenhuttl likes to implement, pressing from the front.

With Nathan Redmond, Sofiane Boufal, Shane Long and Michael Obafemi also present, this team could be ones to watch on the counter attack especially in 2019/20.

While we may not see much of Djenepo straight away because of his exploits for Mali at the African Cup of Nations this summer, Adams has been on fire in pre-season – scoring all three of his goals from the starting XI before the 10-minute mark.

Danny Ings’ season-long loan move also became a permanent one on July 1, and it looked to have left plenty of time for Southampton to strengthen other areas of their squad, with The Telegraph reporting prior to Adams’ arrival that centre-back and wing-back were two positions they wanted to bolster.

They also managed to offload two individuals that never looked likely to make the grade under Hasenhuttl in Matt Targett and Sam Gallagher for decent money, too.

However, they also needed to offload more bodies before they could bring anyone else in at that stage, and The Telegraph reported that they were willing to listen to offers for the likes of Charlie Austin and Mario Lemina – both of whom were frozen out of the first-team schedule – as well as Guido Carrillo, Cedric Soares, Fraser Forster and Wesley Hoedt.

Amazingly, only Austin has departed from that list of names so far, and it wasn’t exactly met with many sad responses if these GIF reactions from fans were anything to go by. That deadline day exit left the south coast club scrambling around to get centre-back Danso through the door on a season-long loan with an exclusive option to buy – very shrewd indeed.

The 6 foot 3 20-year-old will add some much-needed speed to a backline that conceded 65 goals in 38 Premier League matches last term.

[ad_pod ]

Patience will be required too though, as he isn’t hugely experienced and almost certainly still has a lot to learn following his spell with the Bundesliga side.

Hasenhuttl has previously said that he would like to work with a squad of 22 players – including academy graduates coming through – and that total is far higher now even though the English transfer window has slammed shut.

In Cedric and Jake Vokins the Austrian appears to have decent full-back cover, but you have to think that the summer would have been even better if the club brought in some stiff competition for Oriol Romeu, in the form of a more mobile defensive midfielder.

Nevertheless, Southampton look to have done what they needed to in the main part, but things could still get even better.

The signing of Danso looks to have pushed Hoedt down to sixth-choice centre-back, and it would be no surprise if he – along with Lemina, Carrillo and potentially Moi Elyounoussi – all left before the different European transfer windows close at the end of August or beginning of September.

Saints will hope that is the case anyway, and if they are permanent deals then that would be even better.

So, the window is a solid 7/10 as things stand for the south coast club, but that could potentially rise if they can offload some more of the players they don’t want in the next few weeks.

RATING: 7/10

What have the experts said about new Leicester signing Ayoze Perez?

[ad_pod ]

Leicester City’s summer has all of a sudden burst into life.

Last week they confirmed the addition of Ayoze Perez who arrived for a fee of £30m, a total which broke their transfer record after previously bringing Islam Slimani to the club for £1m less.

Yet, just a matter of days later, Youri Tielemans’ permanent switch to the Foxes was confirmed, smashing Perez’s record by £10m.

The club well and truly have lift off and after being subjected to a summer where Harry Maguire has been the main centre of attention, attracting a bid from Manchester United, the focus is now being directed elsewhere.

The signing of Perez, though, could be canny business. This is a player who ended last season by netting six goals in his final five outings for Newcastle but what have the experts said about him?

Luis Garcia, former Spanish international:

“He definitely deserves a try [in the Spain team] because he’s been amazing, it’s not easy in a team which is being rebuilt, hasn’t had much help for Rafael Benitez but every time he is on the pitch he delivers something special.

“He’s a very technical player, knows how to move to score goals and it is something that maybe Rafa was asking a little bit more [from him].”

Considering some of the great Spanish strikers that have gone before him, earning a call-up to the national side – as his compatriot Garcia alluded to on Sky Sports’ Goals on Sunday (24/02/19, 12:26), via The Chronicle – would be quite something.

Interestingly, it’s something he’s reiterated he has a vision of achieving in the past.

Previously in 2017, he told Sky Sports, via The Chronicle that it was a dream to play for the national side, before revealing to Marca this year that he hoped the same ambition would come true.

In terms of the goals Garcia spoke about, his 2018/19 campaign was one of his best yet, finding the net 12 times as he ended the campaign as Newcastle’s top scorer.

Per Sky Sports, 62% of his shots were on target, which is hugely impressive and it’s that statistic that bodes particularly well for the Foxes going into next term.

He finished last season with an average of 1.5 shots per game, a tally that would have put him fifth in the shots per game leaderboard at Leicester.

Noel Whelan, commentator and ex-footballer:

“He’s always been a good player, we saw that there’s a spark in him, he’s got a change of pace, he’s good on the ball very intelligent player and when you’ve got those three things obviously clubs will be interested, especially at a club that have sort of struggled.”

Fascinatingly, Whelan tipped Perez for a move away from Newcastle when speaking to Football Insider earlier this year. He waxed lyrical about the Spaniard, hailing the new Leicester signing for what he can offer.

It’s clear Perez is an intelligent player by his all-round contribution to the side. Not only does he add goals but he’s also creative as well, boasting the ability to play in a variety of positions.

At Leicester there is a strong possibility that he could be preferred either on the right or behind Jamie Vardy, who will presumably continue to start in attack after thriving under Rodgers at the culmination of the 2018/19 season, scoring ten goals in the final 11 games of the Premier League season.

To provide evidence of just how intelligent he is, he created the same number of opportunities, 1.2 per game, as Tielemans managed in a Leicester shirt last term.

Could Daniel Sturridge be set to reunite with Brendan Rodgers? Check out the video below to find out…

Anton Toloui, Sky Sports reporter:

“He adds options to that frontline, they’ve got very direct options and Jamie Vardy probably needs some support behind him and they need a back up for James Maddison if he can’t play. He brings versatility and he brings pressing. He brings a certain defensive discipline to a team that Brendan Rodgers will absolutely love as well.”

Speaking to Sky Sports’ Good Morning Transfers as Leicester were in the middle of pursuing Perez, Toloui spoke about what exactly the 25-year-old can offer at Leicester.

After last season the Foxes desperately needed to add to their attacking options. Besides Vardy, who scored 18 and James Maddison, who netted seven, they lacked a coherent and consistent goal threat.

However, Perez will give them a refreshing option which, on paper, is far better than the four-goal Demarai Gray, someone he could rival on the right-hand side.

His ability to press, though, could be game-changing for Rodgers’ side.

Last season he managed particularly striking defensive statistics, making 1.6 tackles per game whilst managing a further 1.1 interceptions.

Verdict

It remains to be seen just how much of an impact Perez will have on the Leicester side but for £30m it’s likely the pressure will be on him to succeed.

The Foxes have already seen big money signings in Slimani and Kelechi Iheanacho fail, with the pair of them scoring just 13 and 10 goals respectively after their arrivals.

But despite that, the glowing reviews above are a demonstration of the quality he does indeed have.

From the expert opinions it’s clear he’s got more than one dimension to him, and that in itself should be conducive to a successful spell in the Midlands.

Crystal Palace fans don’t want Nathaniel Clyne as Aaron Wan-Bissaka replacement

[ad_pod ]

Some Crystal Palace fans on Twitter don’t want Nathaniel Clyne to return to the club to replace Aaron Wan-Bissaka if he is to leave this summer.

Manchester United are currently in negotiations to sign the 21-year-old full-back who is currently away at the Under 21 European Championships with England.

The Eagles are thought to be holding out for £50million for the player and a deal is thought to be close between the two sides.

As a result, many of the Selhurst Park faithful have been looking at the possible replacements at right-back and Clyne’s name has surfaced after they were linked with the Liverpool man just last month.

The 28-year-old spent 13 years at the club between 1999-2012 and made 137 appearances for the first team – scoring once and assisting seven times, before making the move to Southampton.

Are Crystal Palace right to slap a £100m valuation on Wilfried Zaha’s head? Check out the video below to see why they are…

Since moving from the south coast he spent four years at Liverpool before spending a short spell on loan at Bournemouth until the end of last season.

But Palace fans do not seem at all pleased with the idea of him re-joining the team after seven years away.

Here are just some of the fans displaying their disappointment at the idea:

Danny Rose deserves credit not criticism for comments on his future

[ad_pod ]

Danny Rose has admitted that he could leave Tottenham Hotspur this summer, per Sky Sports.

What’s the word?

The left-back was an integral part of Spurs’ run to the Champions League final and their top-four finish, making a total of 37 appearances in all competitions.

His contract expires in 2021 and the 28-year-old has now suggested that he may be sold before the start of the 2019/20 campaign.

He said: “I don’t know what the future holds now. I’m looking forward to a break. If I’m back at Tottenham next season, great, if I’m not – great. I’ll just have to wait and see.

“It’s not about regular first-team football. I know my age and I know how the club’s run in terms of if you get to a certain age they might look to ship you on.

“It has been no secret that my name has been mentioned quite a few times in terms of players moving on and I’ll be just sitting tight over the next few weeks and just seeing what happens. Either way I’m prepared for whatever happens.”

He has, however, admitted that he hopes to be in north London as Spurs look to win their first trophy since 2008.

He added: “Last season I didn’t play as much as I wanted. This season I’ve played quite a bit, it’s been really good.

“As a whole, I’m proud of what I’ve done individually and I’m over the moon about what the club has achieved as well. There have been some difficulties – no signings, playing at Wembley and I think the club and players have shown great character.

“We are in a good position for next season now and we will be raring to go because the final in Madrid was an unbelievable experience and it’s one I’d love to experience again.”

Brilliant openness

Rose is perhaps the most forthright footballer in the Premier League.

He rarely holds back and has regularly opened up, admitting to his struggles with depression and hitting out at those who have racially abused him on the pitch.

These quotes are merely an extension of that mentality; Rose was asked a straight question and he gave a straight answer and Spurs fans should think twice before criticising him for it.

Rose is not, after all, saying that he wants to leave the club, instead, he is being honest about the limitations he feels he has and the potential of the club deciding to cash in.

His honesty can only be applauded, with fans constantly kept in the loop.

We could do with more players of the 28 year-old’s ilk.

Transfer Focus: Southampton agree deal for Moussa Djenepo

[ad_pod ]

On Wednesday morning, Sky Sports broke the news that Ralph Hasenhuttl’s Southampton have agreed a deal to sign speedy Standard Liege winger Moussa Djenepo.

What’s the word, then?

No fee was reported by the outlet but what we do know is that the 20-year-old will undergo a medical in Paris next week and should obtain his work permit in the next seven days.

Djenepo is a quick, tricky winger whose preferred position is out on the left flank but can play anywhere across the attack.

The starlet comes from the humble beginnings of Yeelen Olympique in his native Mali and made the big move to Europe in early summer 2017, not looking back since and now seemingly earning himself a switch to the promised land of the Premier League. He has been capped eight times by the Mali national team.

What Djenepo needs to become a Hasenhuttl winger

Djenepo can’t afford to think that he’s made it now by getting such a huge transfer and needs to work hard on a number of facets of his game to avoid becoming the next Mohamed Elyounoussi.

He arrives to a demanding manager on the south coast and one who will be hoping he’s of the standard to replace Elyounoussi, who endured a disastrous first campaign after arriving last summer.

Very much in the same way that Nathan Redmond has transformed since Hasenhutt’s arrival at St. Mary’s, Djenepo will need to evolve to the Austrian’s way of playing.

Who has been your club’s unsung hero the season? Fans nominate theirs in the video below…

The modern gaffer will want the former UEFA Europa League star to get quicker and learn to press the ball high out on the flanks with aggression. The attacker also must work on his goal tally as he’ll be expected to score more than seven league goals next campaign.

However, if he can do the right things and follow in the footsteps of Redmond in reaching that next level, there’s no reason why Djenepo shouldn’t blossom with the Saints and avoid flopping in Eyounoussi fashion, taking the Premier League by storm.

Sunderland fans go above and beyond praising Alim Ozturk

[ad_pod ]

Loads of Sunderland fans have been reacting to their win over Doncaster, as the Black Cats continue to keep the pressure on Barnsley.

Sunderland suffered a humiliating setback last weekend, conceding five goals at home in a remarkable defeat to Coventry.

Jack Baldwin and Tom Flanagan were absolutely woeful in the match, leaving Jack Ross no choice but to switch things up when Doncaster came to town on Friday evening.

Pl>ymaker FC Exclusive: Jermaine Jenas reveals why Tyne-Wear is a more intense derby than anything London can offer – check out the video below….

The boss opted for Alim Ozturk and Jimmy Dunne in defence, the former of which has played just 13 times in all competitions this season, and just six times total in the league.

The change was a success too, as barring a penalty shout that Ozturk was perhaps lucky to get away with, the new duo impressed fans with their no-nonsense style of defending.

The Black Cats are now just two points behind Barsnley after the 2-0 win over Doncaster, and they still have a game in hand on the Tykes as well.

You can find some of the best Twitter reactions down below, where some fans have gone slightly overboard with their comments on the formerly forgotten Ozturk….
