Norwich Union League matches on June 16th

This weekend the leaders of Division One, Warwickshire Bears, will be growling and prowling around Headingley in action against Yorkshire Phoenix

Ralph Dellor12-Jun-2002This weekend the leaders of Division One, Warwickshire Bears, will be growling and prowling around Headingley in action against Yorkshire Phoenix. The Bears are four points clear in the table, with three teams just four points behind on ten points, and one of those is Yorkshire Phoenix so there is no shortage of incentive for the home side to claw their way up to join the leaders on the 14-point mark.Glamorgan Dragons – one of the other ten point teams – do not have a fixture this week, but Worcestershire Royals do, at Chester-le-Street against Durham Dynamos. The Dynamos have not been fully charged yet this season, losing all three of their previous outings, so there is every chance for the Royals to record their third victory of the season. They were forced to accept two points for a no result at Oakham School last week against Leicestershire Foxes. The Foxes are the visitors to Bath as part of one of the few festival weeks still continuing in county cricket. The Foxes have an equally-balanced record of one win, one defeat and that no result last week, while hosts, Somerset Sabres, are looking for their first win of the season after two defeats and a wash-out.In the other Division One match, Nottinghamshire Outlaws meet Kent Spitfires at Trent Bridge. The defending champions, Kent Spitfires, have made no more than an ordinary start to this season although there was nothing ordinary about the tie in Cardiff last week. The Outlaws might be prepared to settle for a similar record, however, with just two points to show for their four outings so far. Outlaws, out of luck and possibly out of the division come September.Festival cricket can be seen in Division Two, at Ilford where Essex Eagles take on Lancashire Lightening. The Eagles have been flying high in most competitions this season, but they have only played two Norwich Union League matches – winning one and losing the other. Their talons will have to be at their sharpest to get to grips with Lightening who are lying sixth in the table but are only one win away from the leading trio. One of that trio, Northamptonshire Steelbacks, have a short journey to play Derbyshire Scorpions who are also within a win of the leaders. Hampshire Hawks also entertain neighbours, Surrey Lions, while the third member of the pace-setting trio, Gloucestershire Gladiators, face the team which is propping up all the others, Middlesex Crusaders. Having played four matches and with only four points from two no results, the Gladiators would be reckoned to have a good chance of getting the thumbs up for another four point haul.

Spurs: Pep given green light to land Kane

Tottenham Hotspur’s chances of keeping Harry Kane this summer may have just gotten a bit slimmer…

What’s the word?

According to the Telegraph’s Mike McGrath, Manchester City chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak has given his manager Pep Guardiola the green light to pursue a move for the Spurs striker this summer.

The Citizens owner believes that the Premier League champions need to send a strong message in the transfer market and has confirmed that they will be looking at finding a replacement for the departed Sergio Aguero, in which Kane features as a key target.

“This is actually the time to send a strong message that there is no contentment and that we are not just satisfied with just winning the league,” claimed Al Mubarak. “We lose a very important legend in Sergio Aguero, very hard shoes to fill but I am confident we will find the right player to fill those shoes.”

Long summer ahead

Last month, Spurs were rocked with the bombshell that their 27-year-old talisman expressed his desire to leave his boyhood club in the summer as he seeks to add silverware to his goal-laden career, as per Sky Sports.

Lilywhites chairman Daniel Levy has remained firm thus far, with reports suggesting that he is unwilling to sell the England international and that he certainly has no intention of strengthening a Premier League rival.

Although the ball seems to be firmly in Kane’s court as it’s also thought that the had a gentlemen’s agreement with Levy that he would stay to try and win a trophy in Jose Mourinho’s first full season in charge – the Portuguese boss was sacked on the week of the Carabao Cup final.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-spurs-news-manager-gossip-transfer-rumours-team-and-injury-updates-and-more” title= “Read the latest Spurs news, manager gossip, transfer rumours, team and injury updates and more!”]

Spurs have had their fair share of transfer sagas and Levy has been in this position before. Back in 2011, Luka Modric submitted a transfer request following interest from London rivals Chelsea before signing for Real Madrid a year later.

According to Eurosport’s Dean Jones, Kane likes the idea of playing for Man City, though not even £150m may not be enough to tempt the Spurs chairman.

It’s clear that the North London outfit are going to be in for a long summer of uncertainty, however, this fresh twist does not help Levy’s cause whatsoever and he may well be left absolutely reeling.

City certainly have the financial clout to test his resolve, especially after the 2020/21 campaign saw them clinch their fifth Premier League title, whilst also making their first-ever Champions League final.

A signing of Kane’s calibre could be exactly what Guardiola needs to finally get them over the line in Europe and now he’s been given the green light to sign him, who knows how much the Manchester giants can throw at him?

Kane wants to leave, City are going to pursue him and Guardiola has a war chest of funds available at his disposal. It puts Levy in a tricky spot, even more so when considering that Spurs’ next manager will likely want the prolific marksman at the club next season.

Trying to compete without a player that directly contributed towards 54.4% of your top-flight goals throughout the 2020/21 season is a worrying prospect. He has also hit at least 17 goals in every Premier League campaign since 2014/15, too, as per WhoScored.

This latest development will leave Levy seething, that’s for sure.

AND in other news, Levy risks major Spurs disaster with “cheap” Poch alternative who once wowed Guardiola…

Opening stand puts Yorkshire in strong position against Kent

A splendid opening partnership of 152 between Scott Richardson and Matthew Wood helped put CricInfo Championship leaders Yorkshire into a strong position against second-placed Kent at Headingley

David Warner07-Jun-2001A splendid opening partnership of 152 between Scott Richardson and Matthew Wood helped put CricInfo Championship leaders Yorkshire into a strong position against second-placed Kent at Headingley.Yorkshire closed on 287 for six with a lead of 75 and they would have been even better off but for an excellent 12-over spell from Kent captain Matthew Fleming in which he picked up four wickets for 32 runs. After getting off to a cautious start in which they were each dropped behind the wicket, Richardson and Wood gained rapidly in confidence and Wood twice pulled Martin Saggers for big sixes.Wood looked to be heading for his first century since the opening match of last season but when he had made 90 off 188 balls with eight fours and two sixes he edged left-arm spinner Min Patel to James Hockley at slip.Richardson, who had earlier completed his maiden half-century, moved smoothly to 69 before wretched luck brought about his dismissal. His second wicket partner, Craig White, blasted back a fierce drive to Patel who could not make the catch stick but saw the ball deflect into the stumps with Richardson stranded out of his crease.White had added 53 with Lehmann when he was caught behind for 26 to become the first of Fleming’s victims and the Kent leader quickly followed up by trapping his opposite number David Byas lbw with one which kept low.Gary Fellows and James Middlebrook also departed to Fleming but there was no stopping Lehmann who hit Patel for an enormous six over mid-wicket and the Australian was unbeaten at stumps with 66 from 108 balls with four fours and a six. Before play began, Yorkshire registered 23-year-old paceman Steven Kirby and immediately drafted him into the side in place of Matthew Hoggard who had withdrawn in order to join the England squad at Edgbaston.Kirby has impressed with trials for Yorkshire this season after spending the last few years playing for Leicestershire Seconds but he was not retained at Grace Road because of a back problem which has since cleared up.

Leeds: Bielsa must unleash Niall Huggins

Amid all the talk of Gjanni Alioski being offered a new contract and the potential arrival of a new left-back, Leeds United manager Marcelo Bielsa might want to consider looking closer to home for someone who could really nail down that role for years to come.

Niall Huggins made his first team debut for the Whites when he came on as a second-half substitute in the 4-2 defeat to Arsenal in the Premier League last season, while he has been a consistent performer for the under-23s.

The 20-year-old played 17 times in Premier League 2 Division 2, scoring twice and assisting once, helping the Whites’ youngsters clinch the title and promotion.

After a particularly impressive display earlier in the season for the under-23s, Leeds Live’s Joe Donnuhue waxed lyrical about the starlet, even suggesting that he could be set for some first team football sooner rather than later.

He wrote: “In the second half, Huggins tucked back in to left-back as Leif Davis was withdrawn at the break. His effort levels were a class above, as he is almost every week. If he continues in this vein, he will not be far off more regular first-team squad involvement.”

Kalvin Phillips is also a fan of the 20-year-old, revealing that he could be set for a first team role in the  not too distant future. The England midfielder commented last summer: “We’ve got a few younger lads called Niall Huggins and Alfie McCalmont. They’re really good young players as well. They’ll be in the team in the next year or so, definitely.”

Meanwhile, Huggins himself has said: “To push that step forward at Leeds, you have to be able to run, do everything intense, everything is done as fast as you can. They want you to be at the top of your game, and for them, that means they want you to be on target weight type, body fat is low, to be able to keep that intensity up for the full 90 minutes.

“And if you’re not, then unfortunately, you could end up not playing. It’s that strict.”

Dubbed as someone with “pace to burn”, the Welsh youngster clearly knows what it will take to make his mark in the Premier League with Leeds under Bielsa, and he just needs an opportunity to impress.

While Alioski might be the talk of the town right now as the club consider giving him a new deal, the left-back slot may be Huggins’ to lose in the years to come.

Meanwhile, Radrizzani must avoid Bielsa’s wrath with this big Leeds decision…

Leeds United eyeing Hertha BSC’s Matheus Cunha

Leeds United are interested in signing Hertha BSC starlet Matheus Cunha in the summer.

What’s the story?

With the future of Helder Costa at Elland Road uncertain, it seems as though Marcelo Bielsa has his sights set on signing a new star winger for his side ahead of next season in the Premier League.

According to German publication SportBILD (via Leeds Live), the Whites made an enquiry to sign the Brazilian back in the January transfer window, and are now ready to reignite that interest in the summer.

The report adds that interest in the 21-year-old is becoming more concrete, and Cunha is keen to explore new opportunities too.

Julian Nagelsmann rates him

The £35m-rated Cunha has enjoyed an impressive campaign with Hertha in the Bundesliga this season, netting seven goals and providing another six assists in just 27 games in the competition.

Prior to starring for Hertha however, Cunha was on the books at RB Leipzig, and worked under Julian Nagelsmann, and the German was quick to hail the kind of ability the Brazilian youngster has, and the progress he has made since leaving them.

He said: “Matheus Cunha is playing really well at the moment – he’s a huge talent and possesses so much skill.”

And, his former manager at Hertha, Bruno Labbadia, said that Cunha has got the kind of ability and talent to be a real game-changer, and can decide games on his own with a piece of magic.

He said: “Matheus has something special. He can always produce something with a moment of individual brilliance.”

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-leeds-transfer-rumours-and-news” title=”Read the latest Leeds transfer rumours and news!”]

Described as having speed, skill and intelligence by Bundesliga.com, the 21-year-old seems exactly like the kind of exciting winger that could really set Elland Road on fire, and it’s no wonder Leeds are after him this summer.

Meanwhile, Leeds United handed a huge boost as major Elland Road news emerges…

Danjuma responds to Saints interest

Southampton target Arnaut Danjuma has responded to reported interest from the south-coast outfit.

Danjuma discusses future

The Saints have previously been linked with a move for Danjuma (The Sun), who has enjoyed a good season in the Championship with the Cherries.

Speaking to Voetbalzone.nl, Danjuma said when asked about interest from Southampton:

“That is always an option. As long as we get promoted to the Premier League, it will be beneficial for the club and for me. I’m not working on that yet. It is important that we go to the Premier League because I have not set my sights on an extra year in the Championship. When we get a PhD, we then see what will happen.”

Exciting player

Danjuma has enjoyed a fantastic term in the second tier. He has managed 15 goals and eight assists in 34 matches in all competitions (Transfermarkt), and was even recently named in the Championship Team of the Season (via The Bournemouth Echo). He now seems to be settling in at Dean Court and indeed English football.

Bournemouth’s place in the play-offs is already confirmed, so they are in with a chance of returning to the Premier League. Should they achieve that goal, it appears unlikely that Danjuma will leave. Fail to earn promotion, though, and the Saints could be in with a chance of signing him. Ralph Hasenhuttl and co will therefore have a close eye on the £10.8m-valued Netherlands international (Transfermarkt) between now and the end of the season.

In other news, Southampton fans are gutted at this “terrible” news.

Everton must target Juventus’ Rabiot

Marcel Brands must seal a summer swoop for rumoured Everton target Adrien Rabiot of Juventus after Kevin Campbell identified a major flaw with Carlo Ancelotti’s current squad.

Campbell has claimed that competition for places is the main factor standing between the Toffees and qualifying for Europe, after seeing Ancelotti being forced to name several academy players on the bench against Brighton & Hove Albion.

Ancelotti was without Andre Gomes (hamstring), Allan (knock), Abdoulaye Doucoure (foot), Fabian Delph (tendon) and Jean-Philippe Gbamin (knee) at the Amex Stadium, leaving Tom Davies as his only natural central midfield option.

Among those named on the bench against Brighton included goalkeeper Harry Tyrer, Kyle John, Reece Welch and Isaac Price, all of whom are yet to make their senior debuts, and the latter two’s inclusions were their first in a senior squad.

Campbell believes that Ancelotti’s thin squad has played a key role in Everton’s hopes of qualifying for Europe subsiding, after Monday’s goalless draw left the Goodison Park natives eighth in the table and six points down on the guaranteed UEFA places.

“I think Tom Davies has done pretty well most of the time, but Everton just don’t have the squad,” the 51-year-old told Sky Sports, via quotes shared by the Daily Mail. “They need to fatten that squad up, so you can play like for like, make different changes, because if you’re looking to step up, you’ve got to rotate your squad.”

Doucoure had started 25 of 26 available Premier League games following a £20m summer switch from Watford before fracturing his foot, while Allan opened 15 of 16 available top-flight fixtures either side of a lengthy hamstring injury.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/latest-everton-news-and-views” title=”Latest Everton news and views!”]

Allan has so far only failed to see the final whistle on one occasion when he has started a league game for Everton, while only Michael Keane (2,450), Dominic Calvert-Lewin (2,246) and Richarlison (2,171) have played more minutes for Everton than Doucoure (2,137).

Gbamin’s return from 19 months of injury hell with quadricep and Achilles problems would have provided Ancelotti with some welcome support in the engine room, but the Toffees are now set to be without the Ivorian for the remainder of the season due to his knee injury.

The midfielder’s latest issue, sustained in a training ground collision with Lucas Digne, may instead see Everton target other options in the summer market, following reports by The Athletic claiming that Brands’ work could hinge on Gbamin staying fit and finally proving his worth.

Everton have been linked with a move for Rabiot since Ancelotti’s arrival at Goodison Park, and France Football [via Sport Witness] claimed earlier in the year that the Italian was urging club figures to sign the Juventus midfielder, who Andrea Pirlo believes is a “complete player”.

It could take as much as €30m (£26m) to sign Rabiot, although Tuttosport noted last month that Juventus are willing to listen to offers for the Toffees target, for whom Ancelotti has never lost his fondness.

Ancelotti gave Rabiot his debut for Paris Saint-Germain aged 17, and ESPN have claimed that he considers the £187,000-per-week maestro to be an upgrade on Gomes as the Frenchman is a great box-to-box option who has talents which may suit the Premier League.

With Campbell now questioning the depth of Ancelotti’s squad and seemingly urging his former club to spend in the summer, Brands should be doing all he can to see that Rabiot is an Everton player next season.

AND in other news, Everton have been tipped to sign a £25m star once dubbed “a freak of a talent”

Leeds could clinch transfer bargain in Koopmeiners

Leeds have been handed a major boost in their chase to sign AZ Alkmaar captain Teun Koopmeiners this summer.

What’s the story?

In a list of options suggested by The Athletic’s Phil Hay as potential cover for Kalvin Phillips, the Dutchman’s name came into the discussion, with the news that he could be set for an exit from Alkmaar when the transfer window opens.

Spanish publication AS have claimed that, as well as fellow Premier League side Liverpool being interested in Koopmeiners, AZ could be willing to let him go for a fee of around £14.5m.

Better bargain than Meslier

Given just how cheaply Leeds bought Illan Meslier on a permanent deal last summer (£5.85m, according to Transfermarkt), that deal is surely up there with being one of Victor Orta’s biggest masterclasses at Elland Road.

In the 1.83m-tall (6 foot) Koopmeiners, the Whites could arguably secure an even better bargain. The valuation on the Dutchman is a major boost for Leeds given what Hay had previously suggested about the midfielder:

“The indications from Holland are that the 23-year-old, who won his first Holland cap in October, is ready for a move and his agent, Bart Baving, told Italian media last month that ‘the time has come for the next move’. However, he will not be cheap and several Italian clubs are monitoring him.”

Described as a “leader” by his former coach Koen Stam, Koopmeiners is AZ’s captain; and as well as being a talented footballer, would be another important voice in the Leeds dressing room if he comes to Yorkshire.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-transfer-rumours-and-news” title=”Latest Leeds transfer rumours and news”]

In some player analysis done by The Athletic, it was suggested: “Koopmeiners has more of an attacking profile than Phillips (something that might fit with Bielsa’s standards of versatility) and there is a lot to like about him. He stands out as a very good all-rounder in top-flight terms: an extremely strong tackler who mirrors Phillips in his constant attempts to look for forward passes rather than lateral balls.

“While the match with Phillips is not perfect, it is close enough to suggest that Koopmeiners is an asset Bielsa could refine with coaching.”

Given the position he plays, and that he appears to be coming in at a much cheaper price than perhaps initially would have been expected, this has all the potential of being another Orta masterclass if Leeds can pull it off.

Meanwhile, Leeds are eyeing this 6 foot 3 powerhouse…
