Rubel accuser 'drops' charges, law may differ

Rubel Hossain’s match-winning performance against England may fetch him an unexpected pay-off – a Bangladeshi actress says she will drop the charges under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act against him that saw him spend three nights in jail in January. But Bangladeshi law does not allow such charges to be dropped unilaterally, and the entire legal process is usually drawn-out and complicated. The actress, Naznin Akhtar Happy, told a private TV channel in Bangladesh, in the aftermath of the England match on Monday, that she was moved enough to drop the charges.”I’ve forgiven him. I am not going to continue the case against him,” Happy told Channel 24 television on Tuesday. “I am not going to give any testimony or evidence against him. And if I don’t carry on with the case, then there is no case.”Her statement came a day after her lawyer Cumar Debul Dey said he wouldn’t represent Happy. A few hours after Bangladesh’s win over England, he wrote on his Facebook page: “I am withdrawing myself as Happy’s lawyer in light of Bangladesh and Rubel’s success. In future, if any other lawyer is appointed to deal with this case, I will not have any problems.”On January 8 Rubel was sent to jail by a Dhaka court in a case filed under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act. Dhaka Metropolitan magistrate Muhammad Anwar Sadat passed the order after Rubel surrendered before the court and pleaded for bail. Rubel had, on December 15, been granted four weeks of anticipatory bail in the case. This came two days after the complainant, an actress, had filed the case against Rubel with Mirpur police station on charges of making false promises of marriage.Three days later Rubel was granted bail pending the police submission of the charge sheet to the court. He was also allowed to travel abroad, excusing him from appearing before the court for further proceedings.

Clarke's series clouded despite brave 128

Injections, massage, exercise and no little motivation allowed Michael Clarke to fashion a remarkable hundred in the midst of a back flare-up at Adelaide Oval, but Australia’s selectors must now deliberate over how sustainable such a combination will be for the remainder of the Test series against India.Scarcely a ball went by without Clarke wincing in pain as he forged on to 128 on day two, more than doubling the 60 on which he had retired hurt. The hundred was believed to be the first ever by an Australian Test batsman having been forced from the field due to injury, but its courage is no substitute for the rest and strength work that Clarke has customarily leaned on whenever his back has complained in the past.Short-term salves for the issue, such as painkillers and constant movement, should be enough to ensure Australia do not go through the difficulties of being effectively a man down in this match, though it remains to be seen how much Clarke can field.Though he said it was unrelated to recent hamstring troubles on the opposite side of his body, the team physio Alex Kountouris conceded Clarke’s injury was a major one, leaving the chairman of selectors Rod Marsh and the team performance supremo Pat Howard to ponder wider plans.”As everyone knows, he has got a chronic back injury and he dived to get back into the crease when David Warner was on 99, he felt it a little bit there and then just tried to get out of the way of a bouncer and it really grabbed,” Kountouris said. “Unfortunately it is quite a significant back injury. He hasn’t had anything like this for 18 months. The last time he had this was in the Champions Trophy in England. It’s poor timing and he is struggling at the moment.”The hamstring injury is on the other side. He has been carrying a left hamstring injury and this is his right lower back. This is his old injury, it’s what he has had in the past with his back. I don’t think it is directly related to his hamstring. You don’t want to be a man down, so he is very determined to give it a go and see how he goes.”Steven Smith, who went on to an unbeaten 162 largely in Clarke’s company, said his captain had made the very best of a bad situation. “He was pretty keen to get out there this morning,” Smith said. “He had a good hit this morning and he just came out and played beautifully. A few shots hurt him but he got himself into as many good positions as he could and manipulated the field a little bit as well. He played beautifully under the circumstances.”In the breaks he was getting a bit of treatment, he was walking around, trying to stay as active as he could – sitting down’s probably the hardest thing for him with his back. He was trying to stay quite active.”Clarke has battled his back and hamstring troubles since he was a teenager, and has often worried about how long his body would allow him to play. Over the past few weeks he has shown extraordinary leadership capacity while staying close to the family of Phillip Hughes, underlining how much Australia’s players would dearly love him to be fit for the remainder of the summer.”He has done amazing over the last couple of weeks,” Smith said. “It has been tough for all of us but he spent the whole time by Hughesy’s family’s side. Just the strength and courage he has shown through those times was unbelievable. He must be mentally drained coming into this game but the way he played speaks the world of that guy. He came out here and tried to do something for Hughesy and he certainly did that.”

Dravid to mentor India in England

Former India captain Rahul Dravid has been appointed in a mentoring role to the team in the run-up to their five-Test series in England. Dravid will have a few sessions with the players before the series begins on July 9. He is expected to join the team latest by Monday. The move was initiated by the team management, according to BCCI secretary Sanjay Patel. “It was the coach (Duncan Fletcher) who approached us on behalf of the team and said it would be good to have Rahul with his vast experience spend some time with the boys ahead of the series,” Patel told ESPNcricinfo. “We immediately requested Rahul and he readily agreed.”This will be the first time Dravid, who has been mentoring IPL franchise Rajasthan Royals after retiring from international cricket in 2012, will be associated in such a capacity with the national team.In March this year, former India captain Sunil Gavaskar had said that Dravid should take over as India coach, but the latter had declined the suggestion citing lack of time.”Rahul Dravid is one man who is enormously respected and was a successful captain, having won series in West Indies and England,” Gavaskar had said. “When he speaks, the Indian players, some of whom are superstars, listen to him as they know how much preparation went into his game.””I am happy that he (Gavaskar) said I am capable of doing the job,” Dravid had said. “But the job requires a lot of time, almost 11 months a year. I have just retired and at the moment because of time constraints, I have to decline.”Dravid was India’s best batsman on their previous tour of England in 2011, his three centuries the only bright spot in a 0-4 rout. In all, six of Dravid’s 36 Test hundreds came in England, where he made 1376 runs in 13 Tests at an average of 68.80. He also had a successful stint with county side Kent in 2000, scoring 1221 runs in 16 matches at 55.50 with two centuries.

2013 finish

Runners-up, having lost the final to Mumbai Indians. That was their fifth IPL final in six editions. They have won the title twice – in 2010 and 2011.

Big Picture

Chennai Super Kings have been the most consistent of the IPL teams, both in terms of performance and team selection. So, to their fans, it will be strange to see a Super Kings outfit take the field this season minus Michael Hussey (with the team since 2008), Albie Morkel (ditto), S Badrinath (ditto) and M Vijay (with them since 2009). That they would lose some of their regulars was inevitable, given the big reshuffle this year, but that also means the team is without its established opening pair. As usual, though, they have solid options to fill those slots in new-comers Dwayne Smith and Brendon McCullum, and Faf du Plessis (on whom they used their one right-to-match card at the auction). The five players who were retained – MS Dhoni, Suresh Raina, R Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja and Dwayne Bravo – will continue to form the backbone of the eleven. Among the domestic batsmen, they have the promising talent of B Aparajith and the experience of Mithun Manhas. They have strengthened – and varied – their spin options by bringing in Samuel Badree.Fast bowling has traditionally been their weakness, and will continue to be their most fragile front. They have bought back Ben Hilfenhaus and brought in his countryman John Hastings. They might have a surprise package in young tearaway Matt Henry, who claimed the third-best debut figures for a New Zealand bowler in ODIs, against India in January. Their Indian options include seamers Mohit Sharma (whose performances last season catapulted him to the national team), the experienced Ashish Nehra and Ishwar Pandey, who has been on the fringes of the Indian team ever since topping the Ranji wickets charts in 2012-13.Chennai Super Kings will have to forge a new opening partnership this year•AFP

Off the field, things have been less smooth for Super Kings. Conflict of interest was a sword hanging over the franchise from its inception, it being owned by India Cements – the company of which BCCI president N Srinivasan is vice-chairman and managing director. That sword threatened to fatally slice through the franchise when team official and Srinivasan’s son-in-law Gurunath Meiyappan was arrested on charges of cheating, forgery and fraud a couple of days before the 2013 final, amid the spot-fixing crisis. The threat did not abate as the Supreme Court of India mulled suspending the franchise. The court decided against it. Given a lifeline, the team will be eager to replace the nightmare of the past year with some better memories.

Big players

Super Kings are a team never lacking in high-profile performers, but read through the list of them and it hard go past the pair of MS Dhoni and Suresh Raina. Raina is one short of 100 IPL matches – we are beginning season seven and he is yet to miss a single game – and is the tournament’s leading run-getter with 2802 runs. Despite often batting lower down the order, Dhoni is also one of only 11 players past the 2000-run mark, with 2243 from 96 games. Among those with 2000+ runs, Raina and Dhoni’s averages (35 and 38 respectively) are only bettered by Chris Gayle, and their strike rates (141) are behind only Gayle and Virender Sehwag. Longevity, reliability and explosiveness, all rolled into one.

Bargain buy

If the IPL auction was held after the World T20, West Indies legspinner Samuel Badree would have been one of the most sought after players. Instead, Super Kings picked him up for a mere Rs 30 lakh (US$50,000). Their think-tank must have been patting themselves on the back then, as Badree repeatedly opened the bowling and had the better of oppositions’ top orders in his team’s run to the World T20 semi-final. With 11 wickets at 10.27, he finished the joint-third highest wicket-taker (with Ashwin) and, having conceded 5.65 to the over, had the third-best economy rate (Ashwin being one of the two more miserly than him, with a 20-over cutoff).

Availability

Super Kings have no availability issues.

Quote

“We are professionals and will not allow any pressure to affect our performance. The first five games can be extremely important in the IPL, to build up a winning momentum, and that’s what we will focus on.”

The Nigeria team is welcomed in Colombo•SLC

Nigeria landed in Colombo on Sunday for a nine-day tour during which they will play four Twenty20s. Sri Lanka Cricket said it was hosting the Nigeria national team to “uplift the standard of cricket of the Associate Members of ICC”.The tour by Nigeria comes three months after Kenya had played seven Twenty20s in Sri Lanka. The opposition for Kenya had been a strong Sri Lanka A team which included the likes of Dinesh Chandimal, Lahiru Thirimanne and Shaminda Eranga.Over the last month, Sri Lanka had also hosted Afghanistan’s training camp for the Asia Cup.

Gul takes 11 to guide Habib Bank to win

Umar Gul’s 11-wicket haul paved the way for Habib Bank‘s innings-and-60-run win over Port Qasim Authority in Sialkot.Having chosen to bat, Port Qasim were routed for 65 in the first innings as Gul and Ehsan Adil bowled in tandem to pick up five wickets each. Gul finished with figures of 5 for 12 in 10 overs, while Adil took 5 for 48. A century from Shan Masood and a fifty from Aftab Alam helped Habib Bank reach 288, though they lost quick wickets towards the end to pacer Sohail Khan, who finished with figures of 4 for 72.Port Qasim fared marginally better in their second innings, but still fell short of clearing the 223-run deficit. Gul dismantled the top and middle order, dismissing five of the top six batsmen. Mohammad Waqas, who had retired hurt on the second evening, scored a stubborn fifty, but couldn’t stop Port Qasim from hurtling towards a defeat. The last-wicket stand between Mohammad Sami and Sohail Khan resisted, adding 34 runs before Sohail was dismissed with the score at 163.United Bank Limited won their second match with a combined bowling effort from Tariq Haroon and Atif Maqbool who helped them move above Zarai Taraqiati Bank Limited with a six-wicket win in Islamabad. Even though UBL conceded a two-run lead in the first innings, Haroon and Maqbool routed ZTBL for 136 in the second innings to put them in command.ZTBL scored 235 in the first innings with a hundred from Yasir Hameed (108) even though the middle- and lower-order didn’t score much. UBL were restricted to 233 by a nine-wicket haul from Imran Khan, his best first-class figures, as Saeed Bin Nasir top-scored with 97. Fiery spells from Haroon and Maqbool meant UBL had to chase 139, which they did with the help of Bismillah Khan (52) and Ali Asad (49*).

Lyth gives Yorkshire strong platform

Adam Lyth showed what a fine batsman he is with 93 to set Yorkshire up with the chance to build a first-innings lead over Sussex

Paul Edwards at Hove12-Sep-2013
ScorecardAdam Lyth played well but again fell short of a century•Getty ImagesPrecisely one year and six days ago two young Yorkshire batsmen put on 63 for their county’s first wicket in the second innings of the Division Two match against Glamorgan. One of them made 11 in 39 balls and looked so terribly out of touch that it seemed his bat was made of teak; the other took 60 balls to make a fifty which included nine creamy boundaries and rarely can batting have looked so natural and easy an art. The first cricketer was Joe Root, the second, Adam Lyth.No one these days is disputing Root’s quality, albeit that the jury is still out as to whether he is quite yet a Test opener; but what is more interesting, is what a fine batsman Lyth looks when he plays as he did in making 93 on the second day at Hove.Yet Lyth’s innings against Ed Joyce’s attack was very different in style from his wonderful cameo at Headingley over a year ago. Few bowlers this summer can have kept batsmen as honest as did seamer Steve Magoffin who conceded just 29 runs in 25 overs and trapped opener Phil Jaques lbw for 21 in the middle of the morning session.Line and length seemed almost to be gospel for the Magoffin, who submitted the defensive techniques of both Lyth and his second-wicket partner Kane Williamson to the most severe of examinations. Yorkshire supporters, all of whom know how valuable a win on the south coast will be in furthering their team’s title ambitions, were grateful that the pair passed the test. Indeed they put on 164 in 60 overs and their stand was only seven shy of the county’s record for the second wicket when Lyth meekly dabbed Sussex debutant Ashar Zaidi to Matt Prior at slip when he had made 93.If that was galling for White Rose zealots, it was probably even more irritating for Lyth, who has reached 90 on 14 occasions in first-class cricket but had only made seven centuries. Or to put it another way, when he gets to 90 it is even money as to whether he will make a century. For a batsman of his pedigree that is nowhere near good enough.”At the beginning of the day I would have taken 93 but I was very disappointed not to go on and get three figures,” Lyth said. “I don’t really think about getting out in the nineties but I have got out between 90 and 99 seven times now. Hopefully in the next game I can go on and get that hundred that I need.”They bowled very well to Kane and myself but we knew that if we dug in the runs would come. There was no real tactic to lay a platform for later batsmen but they just bowled well and you have to respect that. We know that it’s a very good wicket but when they bowl line and length it’s tough to score. Steve Magoffin’s line and length were unbelievable.”By close of play the consequences of Lyth’s lapse at the end of his 205-ball vigil were even clearer for Yorkshire who probably need to build a large first-innings lead if they are to have a chance of winning this game.True, Williamson is still there on 80, having sculpted the day’s second monument to concentration, but Andrew Gale and Jonny Bairstow have both departed, Gale caught at the wicket by Ben Brown for a breezy 28 when following a ball from James Anyon and Bairstow castled by the same bowler when attempting a rash drive immediately after hitting him for two fine boundaries.Given his team’s situation in what is a vital match, Bairstow’s shot was not consonant with the approach expected of an international cricketer. It was, to be frank, a rather stupid way to get out, for it helped to take the gloss off a day in which Lyth and Williamson’s application had proved a match for Sussex’s bowlers, led by Magoffin, whose accuracy was peerless.

USA strip Taylor of captaincy for Auty Cup

USA’s Steven Taylor has been stripped off the senior team captaincy for the Auty Cup in Canada from July 25 to 28, and has been given a one-match suspension for transgressing the team’s curfew

USA’s Steven Taylor has been stripped of the senior team captaincy for his side’s tour to Canada for the Auty Cup from July 25 to 28, and has been given a one-match suspension after United States of America Cricket Association (USACA) announced on Tuesday that he had been involved in a breach of the team code of conduct and tour protocols last week, while on the USA U-19 tour to Canada for the ICC Americas U-19 Division One tournament.According to a USACA press release, the 19-year-old Taylor, along with team-mate Trevis Ross, 18, admitted to breaking the team’s 10pm curfew, when they went out drinking on July 12 and didn’t return until 2.30am the following day. Taylor took to Twitter to boast about his escapades in the early morning hours, posting a series of tweets from 1.28am until 2.19am which stated: “Random girl trying to get mi drunk lol”, “Shot after shot!!!!!!!!!” and “I’m drunk.”In addition to the tweets, Taylor posted an Instagram photo showing a bottle of rum with two full glasses, as well as a short Instagram video featuring him and Ross singing along to music being played in the background, while Taylor makes obscene gestures to the camera. The Instagram photo and video have since been removed. As part of USACA’s official statement, Taylor issued a formal apology: “I wish to publicly apologise to my team-mates, the US coaching staff, and to USACA for my actions,” Taylor said. “They were selfish and do not reflect the behaviour that the captain of a national team should display. I feel that I have let myself down and brought dishonor to the game and the US team. I am hopeful that I can learn from this mistake and make amends on and off the field during the Auty Cup.”USACA made the announcement on Tuesday after the team returned from the tour. USACA chief executive Darren Beazley met with Taylor before issuing the reprimand. Ross received a written warning for his involvement in the incident with USACA’s statement claiming he broke curfew, but was not drinking.”This incident is regrettable and out of step with the new direction for US cricket,” Beazley said. “To play cricket for this country is an enormous honour. If we are to progress to a performance-based culture in our high performance programmes, all players that represent the US must accept the responsibility that comes with wearing the national colors. Both players have made an error in judgment.”The fact that the transgression was not leading into a match day does not excuse the fact that players must give themselves every opportunity to perform at an optimal level, particularly in light of the fact that there was a place in the ICC Under-19 World Cup at stake. I am confident that Steven and Trevis will learn from this mistake and will respond in the best way possible by performing well in the coming months of the 2013 US cricket season.”No decision has been made as to who will take over as USA captain for the tour to Canada. Taylor had been named stand-in captain in place of Steve Massiah, who is one of several players unavailable due to work commitments. USA is scheduled to play a two-day game, one 50-overs match and two T20s as part of the tour.

Bowling might takes Mumbai to No. 1

Mumbai have all but sealed a place in the top two after maintaining a clean sheet at home

The Report by Sidharth Monga15-May-2013
Scorecard and ball-by-ball details
On a slightly surreal night, Rahul Dravid lost his cool and shouted at the umpire, Kieron Pollard mocked Shane Watson so much he made him leave the dugout and go into the dressing room, Pollard was run out for the first time in the IPL, Mumbai Indians scored just 34 in the last five overs, but their bowling might won them the match comfortably and all but sealed a place in the top two. Mumbai and Chennai Super Kings now have one more win than Rajasthan Royals, and also a higher net run rate accumulated over 15 matches, which will take some doing to overcome.Mumbai might not have finished their innings well despite 59 off 37 balls from Aditya Tare, who had replaced the injured Sachin Tendulkar, but it was their start with the ball that eventually sealed the game. Two wickets each from Mitchell Johnson and Dhawal Kulkarni reduced Royals to their worst Powerplay score of all time: 29 for 4. Watson wasn’t one of those wickets, but he top-edged a Pragyan Ojha long hop before he could cause much damage.Royals were 58 for 5 in the 10th over when Watson fell but Brad Hodge, held back to No. 8, and Stuart Binny tried to put the chase on track, and even brought the equation down to 38 off three overs. However, Lasith Malinga bowled two of those overs and he went for five and eight in them.Royals could claim similar success with their bowling towards the end of the first innings, but the start wasn’t that good. Mumbai opened with the new pair of Tare and Glenn Maxwell, who weren’t pretty but were effective. After Maxwell for 23 off 17, Tare took over and went after all Royals bowlers without discrimination. However, he was only 24 off 15 when Dravid dropped a catch at short midwicket. He rubbed it in by pulling Binny over Dravid’s head next ball. When he finally fell, at 108 for 3 in the 13th over, Tare had set Mumbai up for possibly a score of 200. Some superb fielding and canny bowling from Royals, including Pollard’s run-out by Kevon Cooper and James Faulkner’s last two overs for just 11 runs, kept Mumbai down, but not for long.Having recovered from his poor game against Sunrisers Hyderabad, Johnson was creating breakthroughs at the top. In the first over, he might have got Dravid caught at the wicket without the edge, but it was a sharp bouncer nonetheless. Royals continued holding Watson back, and Mumbai kept running through the rest. When Watson finally arrived, Pollard started talking to him immediately. While Watson seemed furious, Pollard seemed to be laughing almost mockingly. Watson hadn’t even faced a ball. The umpires had to tell Pollard off, but he eventually had the final mock when Watson – under the pressure of falling wickets and rising asking rate – mis-hit Ojha to Pollard. After celebrating wildly, Pollard went to his boundary post and seemed to have another conversation with Watson, who sat in the dugout behind him.Eventually, Watson left the place in disgust, and finally Hodge got to bat when Royals lost another wicket. Royals needed 79 from 43 when he came in, but he and Binny brought the target down with sensible hitting. Hodge hit Ojha for four fours in the 16th over, which included a drop by Ambati Rayudu, but Malinga ensured Mumbai’s clean sheet at home.
