Celtic: Taylor important in Motherwell win

Rejoice, Celtic have won another game of football. It might not have come about in the most convincing of circumstances but it’s another three points nonetheless.

That eventuality has felt like a rarity for the Bhoys this year. In 2021, they have won just three of their eight league outings.

Of course, having 13 players self-isolating after the Old Firm derby wasn’t the best news, but four straight games without a win all but put an end to their chances of winning the SPFL.

They are considerably off the pace and it’s unlikely this win will help them too much. Though, two wins in a row since their dismal defeat to St Mirren will undoubtedly help.

Typical of Celtic this season, their win over Motherwell didn’t come easy. Diego Laxalt was forced into clearing the ball off the line in the dying embers, saving Neil Lennon’s bacon.

Though, it wasn’t the Uruguayan or either of their goal scorers, Stephen Welsh and Odsonne Edouard that were Lennon’s true heroes.

Instead, it was another full-back in Greg Taylor who stole the show for the Hoops.

He was a rampaging force down the left-hand side and in the words of Glasgow Live reporter Chris Doyle, he was “everywhere.”

Doyle wrote at full-time: “(Taylor) linked up with Odsonne Edouard brilliantly. Great delivery, constantly pressing and unlucky to be subbed early. Celtic might be put off by Diego Laxalt’s asking price if he continues in this vein of form.”

Edouard may have been guilty of missing a few opportunities but he will have been grateful for the service he received from Taylor. The Scot managed as many as four key passes, a tally that was bettered by no one else on the pitch. He managed three successful crosses – again the most of any Celtic player – and performed two dribbles to boot.

That put him level with Tom Rogic for the most successful take-ons in the game for a player in green and white.

It wasn’t all about attacking qualities though. He was stern in the challenge and won five ground duels. Once again, that was more than any other Hoops player.

The 23-year-old was undoubtedly their most vibrant force as he completely tormented Motherwell. As Doyle stated, it will have them thinking twice about a permanent move for Laxalt.

The duo have both been inconsistent at times this term but this has put Taylor well and truly in the driving seat to become Lennon’s first-choice on the left side of defence.

Welsh and Edouard may take the headlines for their goals, but it was Taylor who really stole the show for the Hoops.

West Brom: Slaven Bilic dealt devastating injury blow Conor Townsend

West Brom have been dealt a cruel blow as a result of them picking up their first win of the Premier League season last week.

According to Slaven Bilic, as per the Express & Star, Baggies’ first-choice left-back Conor Townsend has been ruled out for at least four weeks through injury after he hobbled off with a knee problem in their 1-0 victory against Sheffield United.

He said:

“I knew straight away. When I saw Conor needed to be subbed, he is not that kind of guy.

“I hoped it was nothing major and thank god it isn’t but he is going to be out between four to six weeks.

“Knowing he is a good healer and a great character, he will be desperate to come back.

“It is a blow, of course, especially considering how well he was doing. But we were concerned it would be a lot worse.”

The 27-year-old has been in impressive form for the top-flight strugglers, ranking as their third-best player (6.84) behind both Conor Gallagher (6.98) and Matheus Pereira (6.89), which in itself, is phenomenal. That’s better than Grady Diangana, Jake Livermore and Karlan Grant.

Townsend has averaged 1.9 clearances, 1.5 tackles, 1.4 interceptions and 0.9 dribbles per game form his eight starts, via WhoScored.

This blow is compounded further by the fact that veteran defender Kieran Gibbs, who hasn’t been seen since his sending off against Everton in the second game of the season, has only just returned to training and may not be fit enough to feature having tested positive for coronavirus last month.

Bilic added:

“Kieran didn’t train for 20 days because of the injury and corona. We will see tomorrow. He has been training for five days now and we will see.”

The £14k-per-week Albion ace has often had to prove his doubters wrong despite his manager lauding him as a “great worker” and a “great professional.”

A view that has been emphasised by other characters in his career – former Chesterfield teammate Marc Richards claimed: “He’s a nice lad but he’s got a nasty side when he crosses that white line. He doesn’t shirk a tackle” while Graham Alexander believes he’s “really popular in the changing room.”

Without him, there could be trouble brewing.

AND in other news, Bilic must unleash his explosive “total nightmare” on Crystal Palace tomorrow…

Forget Grant: West Brom should’ve signed Ollie Watkins

West Brom’s desperate pursuit of securing a new striker ended late in the transfer window this summer when they managed to clinch Karlan Grant from Huddersfield Town, but there was a better name staring them right in the face…

What was the word?

According to the Daily Mail this week, Baggies boss Slaven Bilic was keen on signing prolific Championship marksman Ollie Watkins, though he became one of many targets to move elsewhere.

But this one is made so much worse by the fact that he joined arch-rivals Aston Villa in a £28m deal and whilst that may have seemed out of the realms of possibility for the Baggies, it maybe wasn’t.

Grady Diangana cost in the region of £18m whilst Grant himself will cost around £12m after all the instalments are paid off – that’s £30m right there.

Grant vs Watkins

Either signing would have been a calculated risk given their inexperience in the Premier League, but on the early showing, there’s a clear standout and it’s not the player contracted to the Hawthorns.

Watkins is performing above and beyond that of Grant so far this term. The 24-year-old sensation has bagged six goals in just nine starts, including a phenomenal hat-trick against defending champions, Liverpool.

He is also averaging 2.4 shots, 1.4 dribbles and 1.3 key passes, via WhoScored, which is really impressive for someone deployed upfront on their own.

In a similar role across the Midlands border, Grant has scored just once in seven appearances, and is managing just 1.6 shots, 0.7 dribbles and 0.4 key passes per game. Ineffective.

Both strikers delivered in the second-flight last term but again, Watkins was clear with a whopping 26 goals after back-to-back ten goal seasons.

It’s no wonder he’s been lauded as “lethal” in the past by Trevor Sinclair. His former Exeter boss Paul Tisdale claimed the forward has “got everything” too.

Such praise has continued with his meteoric rise at the top with Premier League legend Alan Shearer dubbing Watkins a “complete nuisance” on Match of the Day earlier this season.

The £27m-rated monster should’ve been signed well before the late panic over Grant. Guochuan Lai and Luke Dowling let the Baggies down with this failed pursuit.

AND in other news, Dowling can revive West Brom’s season with £7m-rated beast Bartley lauded “dangerous”…

Leeds dodged a bullet in mooted Bielsa target Harry Wilson

Leeds United were linked with a plethora of players during the summer, ranging from potential Ben White replacements to strikers that could maybe usurp Patrick Bamford.

And to be fair to the Premier League newcomers, they did some smart pieces of business, so much so that they avoided an absolute financial catastrophe along the way.

The Sun’s Alan Nixon reported at the end of August that the Whites were keen admirers of Liverpool outcast Harry Wilson, who the defending champions wanted around £20m for.

He is a player that Leeds director of football Victor Orta is said to rate “very highly,” as per Phil Hay at The Athletic.

The 23-year-old Welshman had no permanent suitors at that jaw-dropping price, which is hardly a surprise, and has now since gone out on loan to the Championship once again.

You get the feeling that he just isn’t going to make it in the big-time just yet as his switch to Cardiff is his fifth temporary spell away from Anfield since 2015, and his third in the English second-flight.

It is true that his spell in the Welsh capital is going to plan, he has contributed two goals and two assists in eight starts whilst also averaging 2.4 key passes, two shots and 0.8 dribbles per game playing primarily as a right-winger or through the middle, via WhoScored.

However, United need to make the £15m investment in Helder Costa work, on top of the obvious value that Jack Harrison holds as the Yorkshiremen can sign him permanently for a fraction of Wilson’s mooted fee at £10m.

Wilson has also continued to feature on the international stage, leading to former Wales star Dave Edwards lauding the speedster as “unplayable at times.”

Although, the Elland Road tenants have added further depth in wide areas, signing Ian Poveda in January and then Raphinha this summer. It very much would be hard to foresee where a player like Wilson would fit in under Marcelo Bielsa.

Orta dodged an almighty bullet here.

Procuradoria do Brasil vai pedir provas contra Del Nero e Teixeira

Manchester United: Red Devils ‘frustrated’ by Borussia Dortmund’s demands for Jadon Sancho

Manchester United are growing “frustrated” by Borussia Dortmund’s demands for Jadon Sancho, reports say.

Man United are not giving up on signing Sancho this summer, despite Dortmund sporting director Michael Zorc insisting the deal is dead.

According to ESPN, the Red Devils are fed up with the fact negotiations are taking so long, while United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward and chief transfer negotiator Matt Judge are annoyed they have to work through third-party agent Marco Lichtsteiner.

Dortmund wanted to reach an agreement by August 10 to give them plenty of time to find a replacement but United failed to meet their deadline.

Sources also told ESPN that club bosses at Old Trafford are concerned by the quoted agent fees and wage demands from the player’s representatives.

Sancho, 20, was the club’s top scorer last term, finishing the season with a tally of 20 goals and 18 assists to his name (via WhoScored).

The Bundesliga giants have slapped a €120m (£100m) price tag on his head after his impressive performances, but the Red Devils are trying to drive down a deal in the summer.

Both clubs remain poles apart on their valuations for the 11-cap England international right winger, who reunited with his teammates in time for their pre-season training camp in Switzerland this week.

It seems as though nothing much has changed as they still have to agree a transfer fee, agent fees and personal terms with Sancho, although personal terms will not be a problem, according to Italian transfer guru Fabrizio Romano.

While it would be far easier if United could talk to Dortmund directly, rather than being forced to work with intermediaries, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has very little choice if he wants to sign his top target in the summer, unless he would really rather sign Barcelona flop Ousmane Dembele instead.

Contrary to some reports, talks are still ongoing between the two clubs, and the Red Devils are confident they can reach an amicable agreement.

Sheffield United: Club look to be favourites for Rhian Brewster

Sheffield United have been linked to Liverpool youngster Rhian Brewster, and there looks to be an update on this possible transfer which might excite fans of the club.

According t0 90min, the Blades have now held talks with Liverpool over signing Brewster on loan for the 2020/21 season. They are now favourites to complete a transfer despite rival interest from other Premier League clubs.

The 20 year-old made 22 appearances on loan at Championship side Swansea City last season and scored 11 goals, whilst managing on average 2.4 shots on target per game, via WhoScored.

He looks to be a very good striker for the future as he has won the U17 World Cup with England and picked up the Golden Boot in the tournament with eight goals, per Transfermarkt.

He already looks to be sharp during pre-season as well as he scored two goals in Liverpool’s 2-2 draw against RB Salzburg during a trip to Austria and he clearly looks to be very prolific, despite him being only 20 years-old.

This could be a very clever move for the Blades, as they currently have some decent forwards in their squad, including Oliver McBurnie, David McGoldrick, Billy Sharp, and Lys Mousset. However with Sharp and McGoldrick 34 and 32, they might not be ones that the club can rely on for the whole of next season and to have a good young option like Brewster would be handy to have.

Everton: Fans react to transfer link for Adrien Rabiot as he wants to leave Juventus

Plenty of Everton fans have been reacting to the latest transfer link to Adrien Rabiot as Spanish outlet Sport have reported that he has been pressing in recent days to force his departure from Juventus and it is clear that his destiny is none other than the Merseyside club, now headed by  Carlo Ancelotti .

One EFC supporter in particular cited ‘Ancelotti’s pulling power’ on Twitter, and this is highlighted by the number of quality players he has been able to attract to the various big clubs he has managed.

As per the publication, Rabiot was admired by Barcelona when he was at PSG, so he must have shown some quality at least whilst he was in France to be involved with household European giants.

However, he has perhaps not adapted to Serie A or to the methods of Maurizio Sarri , who has apparently not trusted him and has spent much of the season on the bench as a substitute and without any role in the team.

Indeed, the 25-year old has only lasted 90 minutes in eight out of the 17 games he’s featured in Italy’s top division so far in the 2019/2020 campaign, according to Transfermarkt.

Another Toffee described the French international as ‘Schneiderlin 2.0’, who was arguably another central midfield player who has been used relatively sparingly during his time at Goodison Park, as per the website.

These Blues reacted to the link, with some rather mixed responses:
