Newcastle eye Man Utd’s Jesse Lingard

Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Newcastle United have now ‘started’ contacts over a potential move for Jesse Lingard in the January transfer window.

The Lowdown: Developing story…

The Times claimed last week that the St James’ Park club have offered a record deal to the 28-year-old would make him the highest earner in their history and have duly made the Manchester United midfielder their priority signing next month.

His current contract at Old Trafford is set to expire in the summer, meaning that he can leave as a free agent in just a few months’ time.

As such, January may present the perfect opportunity for the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) consortium to pounce, as the Red Devils will surely want to cash in at the risk of losing him for nothing.

The Latest: Contacts have ‘started’

As per Italian football journalist and transfer expert Romano, contacts have now ‘started’ with Newcastle over a potential move for Lingard, although ‘nothing’ has been agreed as of yet.

They are ‘seriously interested’ in bringing him to Tyneside, although it is an ‘open race’ for his signature.

The Verdict: Get it done

The fact that Lingard can leave for free in the summer means that the Magpies could get him on the cheap in the winter window, and he could seriously help in their push to avoid relegation from the Premier League.

Described in complimentary fashion as a ‘joke’ and a player who ‘has four lungs’ by former United youngster Angel Gomes recently, his energy and work rate would be much appreciated among the Toon Army as they bid to avoid the drop. The 28-year-old has also shown his quality on the ball, with nine goals and a further five assists during a very successful loan spell at West Ham United last season (Transfermarkt).

With Newcastle needing to get out of trouble and Lingard not getting much of a look-in at Old Trafford, failing to start a Premier League game this season, it seems like a move which would suit all parties involved.

Gulam Bodi smashed 88 off 44 to set up Titans’ win over Cobras•Cricket South Africa

The Warriors are wrestling their way through the Pro20 competition like the fighters they are supposed to represent. They’ve won all three of their matches and have secured a place in the semi-finals. In the past week, it’s been the Dolphins and the Lions who have suffered at the hands of the Eastern Cape side.Arno Jacobs’ 54 off 51 balls against the Dolphins in Durban set the tone last Sunday. Jon-Jon Smuts opened the batting with Jacobs and together the pair put on 70 runs in the first half of the innings. Smuts scored 43 off 31 balls. The Warriors middle order all chipped in, with Colin Ingram slamming 32 off 15 balls as they totalled 162 for five. The Dolphins’ reply was punctuated with wickets. Big-hitters Loots Bosman and Andrew Hall both made just 10. Imraan Khan, Ahmed Amla and Dale Benkenstein kept the Dolphins’ heads above water with 45, 31 and 21 respectively. The remaining five who batted scored a miserable 13 runs between them. Rusty Theron, Makhaya Ntini, Lyall Meyer and Nicky Boje each claimed two wickets as the Dolphins ended on 139 for 8, 23 runs short. On the same day, the Titans beat the Cobras by 17 runs on the Duckworth-Lewis method in a stormy Centurion. Gulam Bodi was the mainstay for the home side with an aggressive 88 off 44 balls. Thirteen boundaries came off Bodi’s bat, including seven fours and six sixes. The Titans faced 12 overs and ran up a total of 136 for one.The Cobras were pegged back early when they lost Andrew Puttick and Henry Davids. Herschelle Gibbs looked set for heroics, making 48 off 28 balls. When he was dismissed by Pierre Joubert for 48 off 28 balls, the Cobras were 84 for 4 with 22 balls remaining. Two wickets from Albie Morkel restricted the Cape side to 122 for 6 in their 12 overs. The Dolphins suffered their second defeat in three days when they lost to the Eagles by 13 runs in Durban. They bowled well to restrict the Eagles to 152 for 9. Morne van Wyk (62 off 43 balls) and Boeta Dippenaar (30 off 25 balls) were the only significant contributors to the Eagles’ total. Johann Louw was the best Dolphins’ bowler, taking 3 for 27.In reply, the Dolphins began well. Bosman smashed 38 off 21 balls, Khan hit 30 off 29 and Amla 43 off 35. The rest of the order, were abysmal – the other seven batsmen scored 25 runs between them. Johan van der Wath took 3 for 27, but it was Dillon du Preez’s three wickets in four balls that sank the Dolphins. They lie at the bottom of the log, with no victories in three matches. Also on Wednesday, the Lions had their first taste of success of in the competition, when they beat the Titans by four wickets in Centurion. Robert Frylinck struck in the first over, getting rid of Blake Snijman for 8. Then, Ethan O’Reilly continued to make early inroads into the Titans batting order removing Faf du Plessis for a duck and Bodi for 7. The Titans found themselves in the unfamiliar position of 26 for 3 in the third over. Jacques Rudolph’s half century and Heino Kuhn’s 32 rescued the Titans and they ended on a defendable 145 for 5.This time though, their bowlers could not defend the total, despite, Ethy Mbhalati’s 4 for 20, which included the wickets of Neil McKenzie and Vaughn van Jaarsveld. Dane Vilas’ 53 off 37 balls, supported by Zander de Bruyn’s 39 off 34 balls, guided the Lions to victory with eight balls to spare. The Johannesburg boys couldn’t follow it up with another win. The Lions lost to the Warriors by five wickets on Friday at the Wanderers. Things didn’t start well for them as McKenzie and Johnathan Vandiar went early but Van Jaarsveld was magnificent, scoring 72 off 51 balls. No one else contributed with the bat against containing bowling from Kruger (2 for 31), Ntini (2 for 31) and Meyer (2 for 23). The Lions racked up 155 for nine. They looked well set to defend that score when Frylinck removed Jacobs and Smuts early on. The Warriors were on a shaky 15 for 2 on the first ball of the third over, but Colin Ingram was on hand. The competition’s top scorer (175 runs at an average of 58.33) was bruising in scoring his 82 off 52 balls. He was eventually bowled by O’Reilly but had already set the Warriors up to win. Captain Davey Jacobs was there at the end, unbeaten on 32.

Thilan Thushara’s trip to India has been cut short by injury•AFP

Thilan Thushara, the Sri Lankan fast bowler, has been ruled out of the ongoing three-Test series in India because of a shoulder injury. He will be replaced by Dilhara Fernando, who is expected to join the team on November 18.”Thilan Thushara will return to Sri Lanka due to a shoulder injury, and he will not be match fit for approximately two to four weeks,” Sri Lankan Cricket said in a statement. “Dilhara Fernando will replace him.”Thushara hurt his shoulder after crashing into Kaushal Silva during training on Sunday and the injury did not heal in time for him to play the first Test in Ahmedabad. The decision to replace Thushara with Chanaka Welegedara was taken five minutes before the toss. The expected duration of Thushara’s recovery will rule him out of the one-dayers and Twenty20 internationals that follow the Test series. Fernando’s call-up meant that he would fly to India earlier than planned for he was part of the limited-overs squads. Nuwan Kulasekera is the other reserve fast bowler currently in the Test squad.

Rangers interested in Xavi Simons swoop

Glasgow Rangers are interested in a deal to bring Xavi Simons to Ibrox in the January transfer window.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by Spanish publication AS, who claim that Ross Wilson and his Rangers transfer team have initiated talks with Mino Raiola regarding a deal for the Paris Saint-Germain attacking midfielder – whose contract in Paris expires at the end of the current campaign.

The report goes on to state that Barcelona are also interested in a move for the Netherlands U19 international, however, Giovanni van Bronckhorst is hoping that the fact he is the 18-year-old’s compatriot will help to convince the wonderkid of a move to Ibrox, with Gers hopeful of securing a deal for the teenager in January.

He’s like Iniesta

Considering the sheer amount of potential Xavi Simons quite clearly possesses, it is undeniable that, should Wilson and Rangers be able to get a deal over the line for the midfielder in January, it would be a rather enormous coup for the Premiership side.

Indeed, a product of Barcelona’s famous La Masia academy, the attacking midfielder who has been compared in style to both Xavi and Andres Iniesta moved to PSG in the summer of 2019, making his debut for the Ligue 1 side as a 17-year-old earlier this year – with Railoa stating of the youngster: “Xavi Simons is a great player, young, with potential and a big future.”

Raiola is not the only one convinced of Simons’ ability, with Jonathan Mengeli stating his belief that the teenager “has everything to evolve at the highest level.”

It is easy to see why expectations are so high for the Dutchman, as, over his five appearances in the UEFA Youth League so far this season, the £450k-rated man has already scored two goals and registered a whopping five assists.

As such, it would very much seem as if Rangers should do all they can to secure a deal for the 18-year-old this winter, as the £8k-per-week attacker would not only be a transformative signing for the club this season, he would very much appear to possess the potential to become the cornerstone of van Bronckhorst’s Gers side for years to come.

Lacazette in line for Arsenal start v Villa

Arsenal return to Premier League action on Friday night as they welcome Aston Villa to the Emirates Stadium, where they’ll be looking to extend their unbeaten run with a more convincing performance.

The Gunners got away with one earlier this week as they salvaged a point against Patrick Vieira’s Crystal Palace outfit to take their recent record to six games without defeat in all competitions.

Their last two outings have been lacklustre draws in the wake of their 3-1 thumping of Tottenham Hotspur in the north London derby, so something may need to change as Mikel Arteta needs to spark a more positive reaction.

It was Alexandre Lacazette who was the Spaniard’s hero on Monday night as he came off the bench to slot home the equaliser with effectively the last kick off the game, and he will be buoyed by confidence from that goal, so he must feature in the starting XI tonight.

Arsenal have Leeds United in the Carabao Cup next week and that’ll be the more tempting game to rotate his squad, but the current lineup is in need of a shake-up if the side are to get back to winning ways.

It was the Frenchman’s 68th goal for the club since his £52.7m move from Lyon in 2017. He actually has a pretty respectable record in north London, having averaged a goal or assist every 116 minutes across all competitions, as per Transfermarkt.

Previously described as a “goal machine” by former Gunners defender Sokratis, the 30-year-old forward proved this week that he can still be a game-changer for Arteta and he must be rewarded come kick-off.

“He is a bit like Ian Wright, really. You don’t seem to see him and then suddenly he moves,” the late Gerard Houllier once said of Lacazette, further suggesting that he has the ability to be a nuisance and a surprise threat.

The £19.8m-rated striker, who is out of contract in the summer, is yet to start in the Premier League this season, being restricted to only three top-flight appearances. When he has been given an opportunity from the off, like in the Carabao Cup, he has delivered with two goals and an assist in two games, per Transfermarkt.

It’s time for Lacazette to be handed the reins up top against Villa this evening.

Leeds: Raphinha was star of the show

Leeds scored a last-gasp equaliser against Wolves on Saturday as they rescued a point in the Premier League at Elland Road against Bruno Lage’s team.

Hee-Chan Hwang’s goal appeared destined to win the three points for the travelling side, only for a last-minute penalty from Rodrigo to ensure that the points were shared between the two teams.

The result means that Leeds remain 17th in the table and they are now three points ahead of the drop zone, with Burnley and Newcastle on four points and Norwich, in 20th, on two points.

Whilst Rodrigo may take the applause for scoring the spot-kick late on to seal a point, another player was Marcelo Bielsa’s real hero during the match – Brazil international Raphinha.

Despite being withdrawn early in the second-half with an injury concern, Raphinha was Leeds’ most impressive performer as he produced a sublime display on the pitch. The Brazilian was a constant threat down the right wing for the Whites and was unfortunate not to come off with an assist for his troubles.

On the ball, the wing wizard was spell-binding. Per SofaScore, he had three shots on goal, created two chances and completed an incredible nine dribbles, with a 100% success rate, as he helped Leeds up the pitch in transition.

His dribbling ability opened up space in the final third and allowed him to drive down the flank, which ultimately led to him creating two opportunities. This piled on the pressure for Leeds and began to wear Wolves down, playing a part in the eventual equaliser after he left the field.

Defensively, he was just as good. Per SofaScore, he won a whopping 12 duels, losing four, and made three interceptions and two tackles. He also managed to avoid being dribbled past in the game, with these statistics showing that he was able to put in a sturdy defensive display to go along with his exceptional attacking talents – making it the perfect all-around showing from the ex-Rennes flyer.

Therefore, he was the real star of the show for the Yorkshire side. Rodrigo may have scored the all-important goal, but Raphinha’s stunning display laid the groundwork for Leeds to go on and fight hard for the equaliser as he led by example until his injury forced him out of the game. Hopefully, he will be back fit and raring to go with a similar performance against Norwich next weekend.

Lucas Digne suffers hamstring injury

Everton have suffered a big injury blow ahead of their Premier League encounter with West Ham United on Sunday week after Lucas Digne picked up a hamstring injury on international duty.

What’s the word?

The 28-year-old was called up to Didier Deschamps’ France squad for the Nations League finals but will now return to Merseyside after playing no part in their semi-final victory over Belgium.

A club statement read: “Lucas Digne has withdrawn from the France squad due to a minor hamstring injury. The Everton left-back will return to USM Finch Farm to be assessed by the Club’s medical team.

“Digne was on the bench for France’s 3-2 Nations League semi-final victory over Belgium in Turin on Thursday night and will now miss the world champions’ final clash against Spain on Sunday.”

Rafael Benitez will be gutted

Although the severity of Digne’s injury has not yet been confirmed, it seems likely that he’ll miss the Toffees’ next clash against high-flying West Ham on Sunday 17 October.

If the left-back is deemed unavailable for selection, Everton manager Rafael Benitez will be left feeling gutted at his enforced absence given the defender’s importance to the club. Digne has played every minute of the Merseysiders’ top-flight campaign so far this season, captaining the side in their last three matches.

His magnificent form has played a pivotal part in Everton’s impressive displays of late, with Benitez’s men sitting pretty in fifth position after collecting 14 points from seven games, and his attacking influence is evident in his match average of 1.9 key passes, the joint-highest in the Toffees’ squad.

The visit of the Hammers is set to be one of their toughest tests yet, though, and they’ll be hoping that Digne recovers in time to play some part against the capital club. If he misses out, Everton will be deprived of one of their main attacking outlets and most trusted players.
