Kirmani questions Dhoni's keeping technique

Syed Kirmani, the former Indian wicketkeeper, has criticised the wicketkeeping technique of Mahendra Singh Dhoni. He said Dhoni lacked the “copybook basics” of a wicketkeeper and said the flaws were not attracting attention because the Indian team has been in top form in recent months.”He is improving with every match, though he is not technically sound behind the wicket.” quoted Kirmani as saying. “He doesn’t have the copybook basics of a wicketkeeper.Dhoni does not have the natural instincts of an athlete, which is very important for a wicketkeeper.”Kirmani, 59, played 88 Tests for India in a 12-year career that started in 1976 and is one of India’s greatest wicketkeepers. He was also concerned about Dhoni’s long-term future as a wicketkeeper. “No player remains the same after four years. The agility and reflex of a player diminishes with age,” said Kirmani. “The body and muscles start wearing out. And Dhoni is playing all three forms of the game round the year.”Kirmani said that at 27, it was too late for Dhoni to modify his technique. “These things have to be done at the grassroot level. Not only Dhoni, I can’t change the technique of a Parthiv Patel or a Dinesh Karthik.”This is not the first time Kirmani has found fault with Dhoni’s keeping technique. In 2006, he had questioned Dhoni’s tendency to stand on his heels while waiting for the ball instead of being on his toes.

Wolves may start Hee-chan vs Tottenham

Wolves may now start Hwang Hee-chan at home to Tottenham Hotspur in the third round of the Carabao Cup, says Liam Keen.

The Lowdown: Hwang impressing

Hwang is certainly impressing at the Midlands club so far, after he scored on his debut in a short cameo in the 2-0 away win at Watford in the Premier League earlier on this month (Transfermarkt).

He is emerging as a bit of a fans favourite already, and will no doubt want to show the Molineux faithful what else he can do over the next set of fixtures.

The Latest: Start?

Writing in his latest piece for The Express & Star, Keen has now claimed that Hwang may be in line for a start against Spurs, along with Daniel Podence, while the entire defence may be changed from those who started the 2-0 loss at home to Brentford at Saturday lunchtime.

It would be his first start under Bruno Lage, and another impressive performance may see him in contention to start in the league on the weekend.

The Verdict: Start him

While there should be a few changes to the team expected given the need for rotation between the cups and the league, Hee-chan has certainly earned the right to start the match.

A player who Erling Haaland loves from his time playing with him at RB Salzburg, he certainly has a point to prove having been loaned out to WWFC from RB Leipzig.

Nonetheless, the South Korea international should give some good competition to Raul Jimenez and be able to fill in for him when he needs a rest.

Celtic: Source shares Odsonne Edouard fee

Celtic could actually pocket up to £20m in the deal that took Odsonne Edouard to Crystal Palace on deadline day, according to Football Insider.

The Lowdown: Sky Sports claim

Edouard finally sealed a Parkhead exit he has been working on since April with hours remaining of the window, signing a four-year deal at Selhurst Park.

The Hoops brought in a striker of their own in Georgios Giakoumakis from VVV-Venlo.

Sky Sports claimed that a transfer for Edouard cost Patrick Vieira’s side an initial £14m that could rise to £18.5m. However, it seems as if it could be more than that, which is good news for Dominic McKay and Ange Postecoglou.

The Latest: Source shares Wednesday update

Football Insider shared a story on Wednesday after being informed by a Celtic source.

They suggested that a move for Edouard has actually cost Palace £15m which could end up totalling £20m with various add-ons.

The report adds that Celtic will now have to hand Paris Saint-Germain 30% of profits made on Edouard.

The Verdict: A good window

Celtic have brought in 12 summer signings and have come out with a profit, as per Transfermarkt.

The site suggests that the Hoops have forked out just over £20m on incomings and have received £31.59m in departures over recent months.

It seems as if that figure could well rise in the future with add-ons for Edouard, so overall, it appears to have been a productive window for McKay and co, rebuilding a squad in desperate need of a freshen-up with money to spare.

In other news: Deadline day activity away from Celtic means two of McKay’s signings cost effectively nothing.

Spurs expected to lodge Duarte offer

According to Spanish news outlet IDEAL (via Sport Witness), Tottenham Hotspur are expected to lodge a bid to sign Granada defender Domingos Duarte as contact is initiated with the player.

The Lowdown: Spurs in defensive overhaul?

So far, Spurs managing director Fabio Paratici has overseen the arrivals of Pierluigi Gollini, Bryan Gil and Cristian Romero in north London but only the latter man comes as a much-needed defensive addition.

Reports indicate that the Lilywhites wish to add another defender and provide manager Nuno Espirito Santo with some strength in depth.

The likes of Nikola Milenkovic (now staying at Fiorentina) and Takehiro Tomiyasu have been heavily linked to Spurs with news now emerging of another target.

The Latest: Spurs expected to make Duarte bid…

As per IDEAL, Tottenham are now expected to make an initial offer of around €10 million (£8.5m) for the 26-year-old and they have even made contact to sound out the player.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-latest-news/” title=”Tottenham latest news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Nuno is said to be personally behind this possible move as he knows Duarte well and is reportedly looking for alternative defensive signings so he can use a back three formation.

However, Spurs’ expected opening offer will only scratch the surface of his alleged €30m (£25.7m) release clause and Granada are likely to stick to that fee.

The Verdict: Move on…

Starting 27 games for the La Liga side last season, Duarte didn’t exactly blow on-lookers away with his numbers.

While a key player for Granada according to this report, averaging the third-most clearances per 90 out of their entire squad over 2020/2021, he doesn’t do much better than that.

Almost every Spurs defender managed a higher rate of successful tackles and aerial duels won last season with the 6 foot 4 powerhouse hardly being a standout statistically (WhoScored).

If Paratici has to pay a £25.7m clause, we believe he could aim slightly higher than Duarte as he seeks to bolster Nuno’s squad.

Leicester City linked to Barcelona’s Ilaix Moriba

Leicester City have been linked with a move for Barcelona youngster Ilaix Moriba, with the La Liga giants fearing he could leave on a free transfer next summer.

What’s the story?

The highly-rated 18-year-old has entered the final year of his current contract with his boyhood club and has so far been unable to reach an agreement over fresh terms.

As a result, Barca are thought to be open to Moriba’s departure after being forced to train with the reserves, and several Premier League clubs are believed to have been in contact with the player’s representatives, according to 90min.

The report claims that England’s traditional ‘Big Six’ have been offered the teenager’s services, along with Leicester, West Ham United, Everton and Wolves.

Leicester City fans will be buzzing

The £22.5m-rated Moriba burst onto the scene for Barca last season, scoring one goal and providing three assists in 18 appearances for Ronald Koeman’s charges.

As per WhoScored, he recorded an average of 0.9 shots per league game in 2020/21, 0.5 key passes and 1.2 dribbles, highlighting his considerable contribution to Barca’s play.

It was hoped that the 6ft maestro would become a pivotal part of the Catalan club’s new era, but his imminent exit is now looking inevitable.

The news of Moriba’s availability will surely have a large section of Leicester fans buzzing. The Midlands outfit have largely built their recent success off the back of buying promising youngsters for low fees before developing them and selling them on for astronomical profit.

Stars such as N’Golo Kante, Riyad Mahrez and Harry Maguire have all come and gone after gracing the King Power Stadium with their considerable talent, allowing the club to reinvest the proceeds of their sales into the playing squad and a new training ground.

And bringing in Moriba would fit perfectly with that management style. The Spain Under-18 international has established himself as one of the most promising central midfielders in the European game and looks destined for a glittering career.

Whether Leicester act on his attainability only time will tell, but manager Brendan Rodgers would surely be delighted at the opportunity to work with such a talented young player. The Leicester boss must act now.

Maguire: Newcastle spending ‘ridiculous’

Football finance expert Kieran Maguire has slammed Mike Ashley after Newcastle United released their 2019/20 accounts.

The lowdown

Newcastle were the final Premier League club to publish their figures for the first pandemic-hit season. Maguire has crunched the numbers, and they show a total spend of £216m on the 2019/20 squad. That’s lower than Watford and Bournemouth, who were both relegated.

Newcastle went on to spend £35.1m ahead of the 2020/21 campaign, with Callum Wilson and Jamal Lewis the headline arrivals. They have yet to make a signing this summer, although they may be close to ending that famine after a fee was agreed for Joe Willock.

The latest

Maguire told The Athletic that it was ‘ridiculous’ that two relegated teams had spent more on their squad than the Magpies.

He opined: “For Newcastle to have a lower spend than Watford and Bournemouth is ridiculous. As a neutral, I’d expect Newcastle to spend a similar amount to West Ham, Everton and Leicester. But they’re nowhere near them.

“It is just indicative of what Ashley does. He really only spends a significant amount one in every three years and, unfortunately, this is not one of those years.”

Maguire continued: “It is frustrating for supporters. But Ashley looks at it this way: ‘If you were selling your house, would you do up the kitchen first?”

The verdict

The figures underline the difficult position in which successive Newcastle managers have been placed. It’s easy to understand why a coach of Rafael Benitez’s calibre might have become frustrated, with a financial handbrake effectively put in place.

The squad that the Magpies have is good enough to stay in the Premier League, so Steve Bruce did deserve criticism for his side’s flirtation with the bottom three. However, he can’t really be expected to achieve much more than lower mid-table under this frugal model.

In other news, Lee Ryder says a fee has been agreed for this Newcastle youngster.

Journalist offers hope to West Ham’s chances of signing Lingard

Jack Rosser, from the Evening Standard, doesn’t think that West Ham’s permanent pursuit of Jesse Lingard is over, but told The Transfer Tavern that his preference is to remain at Manchester United.

David Moyes is desperate to bring the 28-year-old back to the London Stadium this summer after his heroics during his loan spell last season helped the Hammers qualify for the Europa League.

Lingard scored nine times, finishing just one behind joint top scorers Tomas Soucek and Michail Antonio despite playing just 16 matches, and added five assists during his short stay with the club.

However, United have since offered the attacker a bumper new contract at Old Trafford, with his current deal expiring next summer.

After narrowly missing out on the England squad for the Euro’s, Lingard is already back in pre-season training for the Red Devils and featured in their friendly with Derby last weekend.

However, despite everything pointing towards Lingard staying with his boyhood club, Rosser doesn’t think the Hammers chances of re-signing him are 100 percent over.

He told The Transfer Tavern:

“I wouldn’t say it’s completely dead. I’d say there’s still a chance, but now I would maybe be a bit surprised to see him back at West Ham.

“His preference is to stay at Manchester United, Rashford has gone for surgery, they have signed Sancho, but they’re not exactly blessed with players like Lingard.”
