Hales puts his name in England frame

Alex Hales,a batsman who is beginning to warrant the attention of the England selectors, hauled Nottinghamshire back into the match

Steve Kirby made early breakthroughts but Nottinghamshire closed in on Somerset’s total•PA PhotosStuart Broad did what was necessary to remain the centre of attention here by picking up the 13th five-wicket haul of his career. His performance was rightly put in its place though, as a sub-plot to the bigger story, as Alex Hales, 22, a batsman who is beginning to warrant the attention of the England selectors, hauled Nottinghamshire back into the match with the second century of his first-class career. It was a moment he greeted with a measure of relief as well as pleasure, having developed a tendency to lay the foundations of good scores without making them count. When he reached 50 it was the 14th time he had done so in 46 first-class innings, which is a measure of how often he has been frustrated. There is always the danger, in such circumstances, for mental barriers to emerge, which is probably why he celebrated with a clenched fist rather than any more exuberant display of elation. It signalled determination and the feeling that he had proved something to himself. Then again, a little impetuosity is forgivable in a batsman of relative youth, particularly from a natural stroke-maker, endowed with the advantage of height and strength. And pitches at Trent Bridge in the three seasons since he made his Championship debut have hardly been the ideal surface on which to build confidence.A broken jaw inflicted by a ball from Yorkshire’s Ajmal Shahzad early in May this year, moreover, has hardly been conducive to uninhibited progress. Yet he has scores of fifty or above in six of his last eight first-class innings either side of the injury, and has outshone David Hussey and Adam Voges, Nottinghamshire’s two Australians, in their successful Twenty20 campaign. This innings was not without errors. A leading edge on 59 just eluded the fingertips of Chris Jones at mid-off, while James Hildreth got both hands to a difficult chance at backward point when he was on 68.He went to 50 with a four and celebrated with a six off Murali Kartik, but mindful of having been out six times in the 80s and 90s, he negotiated the last 15 runs of the century with due care, which was just as well given that Steve Kirby was bowling particularly well at the time. But finally he was presented with an opportunity to cut Kartik for four to move to 102.His century followed a fluent 57 from Voges in a stand of 101 for the fourth wicket, which looked to have the legs to go further had the Australian not left a ball from Adam Dibble that cut back and took his off stump. It was young seamer Dibble’s first Championship wicket.Steven Mullaney, dropped at second slip by Marcus Trescothick on 29, played some pleasing shots as he and Hales added 87 for the fifth wicket before Mullaney was caught behind off Kartik, one short of a half-century. Hales is still there on 130, having given Nottinghamshire the substance they needed in response to Somerset’s 386, after Neil Edwards, Riki Wessels and Samit Patel had all gone cheaply.Somerset, who had been 341 for 5 overnight after Broad’s dismissal of Hildreth shortly before stumps, were bowled out for 386, having lost their last six wickets for 48 in a way that emphasised how well Hildreth and Craig Kieswetter had played in their 290-run partnership.Kieswetter passed his previous career-best when he pushed Broad away for two off the back foot to move to 154 in the first over of the day, but Broad claimed his third wicket when his appeal for lbw against Steve Kirby was granted by umpire Neil Mallender to the visible annoyance of the batsman.Kirby’s thumping of the turf with his bat after the finger had gone up will not have pleased Marcus Trescothick, who is already facing a possible ban because of his side’s poor disciplinary record. Trescothick is due to face an ECB tribunal on Friday because five of his players have had disciplinary issues in the last 12 months, which may explain why he has been ‘rested’ from Somerset’s three-day match against India this weekend, in which the England captain, Andrew Strauss, is playing as a guest.Kieswetter fell nibbling a perfect away swinger by Andre Adams, who claimed his fourth wicket when Peter Trego skied one to backward point. Broad, whose bowling so far has probably encouraged national selector Geoff Miller without removing all doubts from his mind, completed the 13th five-wicket haul of his first-class career and his first for a year by dismissing the debutant, Adam Dibble, and Murali Kartik. He has an impressive record for Nottinghamshire, for whom he has taken 53 wickets in only 10 matches. As a press box colleague pointed out, though, his victims here are hardly or the calibre of Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag and Rahul Dravid. However, his captain, Chris Read, who as wicketkeeper is ideally placed to offer an assessment, was impressed enough to offer only compliments. “From my point of view, he bowled with good pace, moved the ball off the pitch and through the air, and to get five wickets was a fine return,” he said, adding that he did not believe the selectors were about to lose faith in him.”He has been among the leaders of the England attack in the last couple of years. He is still a young bowler who bowls at 90 mph and we all know what he can do with his height and the bounce he can generate.”

Finn prepared for a long wait

Steven Finn knows he faces a tough fight to regain his Test spot after losing his place during the Ashes and watching a host of quick bowlers stake a claim for selection as England’s pace stocks swelled. Finn began the series against Australia as a first-choice option in the four-man attack alongside James Anderson, Stuart Broad and Graeme Swann but was dropped after the third Test in Perth.Despite taking 14 wickets, including a career-best 6 for 125 at the Gabba, Finn conceded 4.30 runs an over which left Andrew Strauss short of control. Tim Bresnan was recalled for the Melbourne Test and played a key role there and in Sydney as England took the series 3-1.With Chris Tremlett having also returned to the Test team with impressive results, Broad to slot back in after injury ended his Ashes after two matches, Ajmal Shahzad also pushing for a spot and a clutch of young quicks in the wings, Finn realises he’ll have to work hard for a recall.”I don’t think anyone has ever gone through international cricket without being dropped or left out of a team so hopefully it’s something that will benefit me in the long run,” Finn told ESPNcricinfo. “If it takes me a year or two to get back into the international team then so be it, but I’d back myself to be a better bowler when I get into the team.”I’m not looking too far ahead, I’m just trying to be a key player for Middlesex and then see where that gets me,” he said. “I’m not going to say I want to take millions of wickets early season and get picked in the Test squad, I just want to perform consistently and put my name into the hat.”However, although Finn didn’t complete the Ashes series, he still played a key part during the early battles especially in Brisbane and Adelaide. By bursting through Australia’s lower order at the Gabba he gave England a timely boost, having watched Michael Hussey and Brad Haddin add 307, and from there the visitors began the fightback which saw them reach a record-breaking 517 for 1 to save the Test. Then, in Adelaide, with Broad unable to bowl on the final day due to the abdominal injury that ended his series, Finn extracted some extra bounce from a flat surface which resulted in Hussey splicing a pull to midwicket to ensure England would have time to beat the weather and take a 1-0 series lead.”To take 14 Ashes wickets in three Tests was a great feeling but I’m well aware that I went for too many runs and it’s the reason I got left out of the team,” Finn said in an honest assessment. “It’s important that I learn from what I did wrong in the Ashes series and make myself a better player.”They were an amazing five or six weeks, having never seen an England team win in Australia and hear about how much of a formidable place it is, to win was amazing but that’s been and gone now. It’s important we don’t look back in the past. Yes, we won the Ashes this winter and it was amazing, but there’s going to be a lot hard work now that will make me a better cricketer.”Finn, though, has time on his side. It’s his 22nd birthday on Monday and he has already shown potential to be a fine Test bowler with a long career ahead of him despite the disappointment of losing his spot during the winter. Having been a surprise selection in Bangladesh last winter, he went onto play his 11 Tests consecutively and a strong start in the County Championship will keep the selectors interested.”I’ve benefited from spending time around the international set up, and to have played 11 Tests before my 22nd birthday, I feel very privileged to have done that,” he said. “Only time will tell if I’ve learnt from my mistakes on the pitch, but mentally I’ve learnt from them and hopefully I can become a better player for it.”

Doubts remain over Zaheer Khan's fitness

There was cause for concern for India with Zaheer Khan choosing to go through just fitness drills due to what seems like a hamstring injury

Still an uncertainty for the first Test on December 16•AFP

India looked a side at comfort with itself during their first fullpractice session with the whole squad for the Tests, butthere was cause for concern with Zaheer Khan choosing to go throughjust fitness drills due to what seems like a hamstring injury.ESPNcricinfo understands that the scans have failed to pick anything, but neither Zaheer nor the team wants to risk aggravating the injury.”As of now he is not [fit],” a team source told ESPNcricinfo. “Thereare still three days to go to the Test, so we didn’t want to take anyrisks.” So, even as the rest of the team had a good workout in the netsat the Supersport Park in Centurion, Zaheer spent time with PaulClose, the team physio. He went through the light fitness drillgingerly, often holding on to the groin area.It could be an injury picked up during the fourth ODI against NewZealand, in Bangalore. As he finished the 49th over of the New Zealandinnings – only his eighth in the match – Zaheer went back holding on tothe groin area. Then Zaheer was making a comeback from a groin injurythat had him miss the third Test and the first two ODIs against NewZealand. He also didn’t feature in the fifth and final ODI in Chennai. This hasn’t been a good year for Zaheer’s body. He missed the whole of the tour of Sri Lanka with an injury to the same shoulder that was operatedon two years ago. He started his comeback through the Champions LeagueTwenty20 in South Africa and did well in the home Tests against Australiabefore getting injured again. The team is hopeful Zaheer will make it to the first Teststarting Thursday, but, should he be ruled out, India have Umesh Yadavand Jaydev Unadkat to choose from – unless they want to go with twospinners, in which case Pragyan Ojha will come in.

Mashrafe Mortaza not in World Cup squad

Mashrafe Mortaza has lost his race to be fit for the World Cup after being left out of Bangladesh’s squad for the tournament

ESPNcricinfo staff19-Jan-2011Mashrafe Mortaza, the Bangladesh allrounder, has not been included in the 15-man squad for the World Cup. Mortaza had injured his right knee while playing club cricket in Dhaka in December and was striving to recover in time for the tournament. He had begun bowling off a short run-up during net sessions in the last few days but the selectors decided against including him in the campaign. Shakib Al Hasan was named captain of the squad and Tamim Iqbal will be his deputy.”There is little chance that Mortaza will be fit before the World Cup,” chief selector Rafiqul Alam told AFP, adding that coach Jamie Siddons supported this assessment. “Mortaza, however, has the chance to be included in the team later if he fully recovers and an opportunity arises.”Mortaza’s absence is a blow to Bangladesh but they have enjoyed a string of positive results under Shakib recently, including beating New Zealand 4-0 in October 2010 and Zimbabwe 3-1 in their most recent outing in December. The doubt over Mortaza’s selection was the only major question ahead of the announcement. And though his exclusion effectively means that Mortaza won’t be part of the World Cup, Siddons was optimistic. “He [Mortaza] is on track with his rehab. He was supposed to bowl today, bowl off a full run-up at the end of the month in eight to ten days,” Siddons had told the day before the squad was announced.”We definitely want him to be fit. If the selectors don’t pick him, and if he’s fit by the first match, we can use him as a replacement in the World Cup. There are a few good reasons for him to bowl. I expect him to be fit by the start of the World Cup. I want him in the team, I want a fit Mashrafe.”The Bangladesh physiotherapist, Michael Henry, had said Mortaza had “responded well and there were no negative repercussions after his bowling stint.”Mortaza described his exclusion “as the most painful day” of his life. “I was 100% confident of regaining my fitness,” Mortaza told reporters. “However, this is life and I am quite accustomed to it.”I respect their decision and you can say this is just bad luck.”Bangladesh will play the tournament opener against India in Dhaka on February 19 after which they play their remaining group games at home.Squad: Shakib Al Hasan, Tamim Iqbal, Imrul Kayes, Junaid Siddique, Shahriar Nafees, Raqibul Hasan, Mohammad Ashraful, Mushfiqur Rahim, Naeem Islam, Mahmudullah, Abdur Razzak, Rubel Hossain, Shafiul Islam, Nazmul Hossain, Suhrawadi Shuvo.

Strauss ton seals England win

England surged to a six-wicket win on the third afternoon of their tour match against Western Australia at Perth, captain Andrew Strauss’s unbeaten 120 guiding their fourth-innings pursuit of 243

Andrew Strauss acknowledges applause after a match-winning century•Getty ImagesEngland surged to a six-wicket win on the third afternoon of their tour match against Western Australia at Perth, captain Andrew Strauss’s unbeaten 120 guiding their fourth-innings pursuit of 243. Four wickets for Graeme Swann, with admirable back-up from Stuart Broad and Steven Finn, had brought England back into the game after Western Australia started the day well placed at 1 for 109. The last nine wickets tumbled for 93 runs to set up England’s second-innings chase, and though Alastair Cook again fell early Strauss ran to an aggressive hundred and a string of contributions from the middle order sealed the win in the 48th over.England looked set for a long day in the field while Wes Robinson and Michael Swart built on a strong opening stand of 77 with a 53-run partnership for the second wicket. But Swart’s removal, pinned in front of his stumps by Finn, sparked a collapse as Robinson was stumped off Swann shortly after passing fifty, captain Marcus North was run out by substitute fielder Eoin Morgan and Adam Voges was caught behind off Broad in the space of eight overs. From then on, England kept firm control of the match and wickets fell at regular intervals. No. 11 Michael Hogan bashed 21 from just 12 balls, including two fours and two sixes, to boost Western Australia’s innings past 200, but when he was run out England were left with the appetising task of chasing 243 in 52 overs.Hogan kept up the counter-attack with the ball in his hands, clean bowling Cook in the fifth over as England’s chase suffered an early setback. But Strauss anchored the innings with aplomb, adding a sedate 65 in 16.2 overs for the second wicket with Jonathan Trott and then shifting gears in a 66-run partnership with Kevin Pietersen that took half that time.Pietersen followed his first-innings 58 with a quickfire 35, striking three powerful straight drives in succession off Hogan and lofting left-arm spinner Michael Beer over midwicket before being given out leg before to the same bowler attempting an adventurous reverse sweep. The decision didn’t impress Pietersen, who stood at the crease for several seconds looking at his bat before walking off.Strauss then added a third half-century stand, with Paul Collingwood, and brought up his 36th first-class century with a crisp straight drive off Swart’s part-time spin. After Beer had Collingwood caught for 26 for his second wicket, he finished the job in partnership with Ian Bell. Bell hurried the conclusion with three fours and a six in his 22 as England sealed victory with more than four overs to spare.

Entrada do Rodinei no lugar do Pará

Liverpool fans happy at Milner update

A number of Liverpool supporters are happy after journalist Neil Jones claimed James Milner would leave the Reds in the summer.

The 36-year-old has proved to be a fantastic servant for Liverpool since arriving on a free transfer from Manchester City back in the summer of 2015.

Milner has made a total of 272 appearances for the Reds, using his experience to great use and winning both the Premier League and the Champions League.

[freshpress-quiz id=“375258″]

The midfielder’s current deal expires this summer, however, and it may be that his time at Anfield comes to an end at that point.

That certainly seems to be the opinion of Goal‘s Jones [via Anfield Watch on Twitter], who claims that Milner is ‘expected to leave’ once the season reaches its conclusion.

Aaronson isn’t Leeds’ only January target

Brenden Aaronson isn’t Leeds United’s only target this January transfer window…

What’s the word?

That’s according to Daily Express journalist Ryan Taylor, who delivered an exciting update on the Yorkshiremen’s plans heading into the final few days of the month ahead of Monday’s deadline.

“From what I understand of the situation, he’s not the only target this month,” he revealed to GIVEMESPORT this week.

Good news

This should alleviate some of the fears mounting around Elland Road from worried supporters and perhaps even manager Marcelo Bielsa too.

The Argentine’s depleted squad has been stretched thin over the last few months.

A number of key first-team stars have fallen victim to the ongoing injury crisis around Thorp Arch, including last season’s top goalscorer Patrick Bamford, skipper Liam Cooper and midfield anchorman Kalvin Phillips.

[snack-amp-story url = “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-lufc-transfer-rumours-gossip-bielsa-orta-radrizzani-elland-road-updates” title=”Read the latest Leeds news, transfer updates and much, much more!”]

It has been so bad that Bielsa could only name one senior professional amongst a bench of nine players during their Premier League clash with West Ham United earlier this month.

There has also been a need for a new central midfielder for quite some time, with the last arrival in the role coming four years ago when Adam Forshaw joined from Middlesbrough in January 2018.

Aaronson is a player capable of adding goals and creativity to the attacking midfield department, the sort of player they have long lacked in the final third but so far, their attempts to sign him have been thwarted with two bids of £15m and £20m being knocked back.

It’s hard to envisage him becoming a Leeds player much before the summer, which leaves them in a tricky and worrying spot. However, Taylor’s claim suggests that he isn’t their only target and that’s much more encouraging to hear.

The Whites are by no means out of the relegation dogfight just yet and with no signs of the injury crisis easing up, Victor Orta and co desperately need to add quality to Bielsa’s squad.
