Celtic: Whelan comments on Klimala to NY

Patryk Klimala looks set to be closing in on a Celtic exit.

Interim manager John Kennedy admitted on Friday that the 22-year-old is days away from completing his move to MLS side New York Red Bulls.

The Hoops landed Klimala for £3.6m last January, but he has failed to make an impact in Glasgow, scoring just three times in 28 appearances.

Despite his struggles, it seems as if Celtic could be recouping all of their money on the Polish Under-21 international.

Pundit Noel Whelan, talking to Football Insider, had his say on Celtic potentially making their money back, labelling the Hoops as ‘very lucky’ to make back their initial outlay on the striker.

“For someone who’s hardly featured, to recoup the £3.5million that you paid? That’s either very good business by the board or stupidity from the people that are buying him.

“They could have got him for cheaper probably but Celtic will not complain. Surplus to requirements, no club wants to lose money on a player.

“So, all in all, I think they would probably think themselves very lucky in that position that recoups everything that they paid.”

Transfer Tavern take

We’re with Whelan in believing Celtic won’t complain about what they’ll be receiving for Klimala. His Transfermarkt value has halved during his 12 months at Celtic Park to £1.8m, but it seems as if the Hoops will be receiving double that amount from the MLS outfit.

You can understand why the 22-year-old’s valuation has dropped since his move to Parkhead. He has started just three league games during the current campaign and has failed to establish himself under either Neil Lennon or John Kennedy.

It hasn’t worked out for Klimala in Scotland, but financially it seems that Celtic won’t be making a loss on him.

Celtic can start again if Howe says ‘no’

Celtic’s resounding 6-0 win this weekend will have breathed fresh life into the Bhoys and its entire staff.

It’s not often the Hoops have managed to record convincing victories this term but it was a wonderful statement from their interim boss.

What’s the word?

John Kennedy is currently in temporary charge of the Hoops and the win he engineered over Livingston on Saturday was a big message to the hierarchy.

He is by no means the favourite to become their new manager with the coach facing competition from Eddie Howe.

That being said, there have been a number of twists and turns. Frank McAvennie doesn’t think he’ll land the job because of complications regarding Fergal Harkin and Richard Hughes.

Howe wants Hughes instead of the former as his director of football which has led to Celtic considering Lucien Favre as their manager instead.

In a fresh batch of news, McAvennie told Football Insider the latest:

“There are names pinging about all over the place up here, they don’t know who’s coming or going.

“But if Howe says no, they haven’t put all their eggs in one basket and I’m told by my sources if they have to start again, they can.”

Positive news

The Celtic hierarchy have had a habit of getting things wrong this season.

Take last summer’s recruitment for instance. They spent £4.5m on error-prone Vasilis Barkas while they also splashed out £5m on Albian Ajeti, a forward who has scored just six times since arriving from West Ham.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/latest-celtic-manager-and-transfer-news-roy-keane-nicky-butt-jesse-marsch-scott-brown” title=”Latest Celtic manager and transfer news!”]

Their failure to sack Neil Lennon led to protests from the Green Brigade outside of Parkhead and Dermot Desmond has been questioned in recent weeks over his role too.

He was asked whether he would sell his shares before issuing a defiant statement; he was going nowhere.

The Hoops haven’t particularly covered themselves in glory over their manager hunt either. Roy Keane was the favourite before rumours of his entrance evaporated in swift fashion.

They are now failing to get Howe through the door, either. Thus, news that they’re happy to start again and look elsewhere should come as encouraging news.

Desmond clearly has other irons in the fire and they evidently have contingency plans. The very fact that Favre is in the picture as well tells the story.

With Howe previously in advanced discussions, it looked as though they had placed all their eggs in the 43-year-old’s basket. That, however, certainly isn’t the case.

Celtic supporters should be pleased by the meticulous nature of the board. After all, a failure to appoint the right man could lead to another disastrous season chasing Rangers’ tail.

Reach the one negative in Sheff Weds win

Darren Moore picked up his first win as Sheffield Wednesday manager on Saturday afternoon but despite all of the positives, there was one glaring downside – the performance of Adam Reach.

The versatile 28-year-old has been the epitome of inconsistency throughout his Owls career – you get moments of magic with the odd screamer thrown in there, and then you get displays like that.

This is something Reach has even admitted himself, speaking to YorkshireLive last season, he said: “My own season’s been similar to the team’s, a little bit topsy-turvy. I’ve had some good moments and some not-so-good moments.”

We certainly saw the latter this weekend, even if Wednesday ended a run of eight matches without a victory.

SofaScore graded him as the worst player on the pitch with a 5.9 ratings yet somehow, he lasted the entire duration of the match.

In that time, he lost possession a whopping 40 times, meaning he lost the ball once every two minutes and after racking up a squad-high 81 touches, it means every other touch involved him gifting possession back to Barnsley. Very, very poor.

On average, the £2.5m-rated star loses possession 13.6 times per outing, so this is rather telling on just how shocking he was on the day.

Reach was also weak in his battles, winning just five of 12 duels (42%), both on the ground and in the air. Moore is rather lucky that the in-form Tykes didn’t punish such mistakes as that left flank was clearly an area of weakness that could’ve been exploited.

In addition to that, the Owls ace was dribbled past three times – only adding to the idea that the home side should have done a lot more to damage their struggling rivals.

The rangy 6 foot 1 dynamo, who is thought to be among Wednesday’s high earners on £20k-per-week, badly let his manager down with his performance. He cannot be excused just because they finally won a game, he’ll have to improve to help ensure it wasn’t merely a fluke result in the coming weeks.

Reach was quite simply abysmal with the ball – he managed to make just 46% of his 46 passing attempts, including only five of 24 long balls finding a player in an Owls shirt, as per SofaScore.

Somehow, there were even worse returns amongst the Owls squad here, but still, this did not help Reach’s overall game.

The 28-year-old’s pathetic outing shouldn’t dent confidence going into the international break, though he will certainly need to improve if the Owls are to stand a chance of beating relegation.

Crystal Palace: Fans react to Sanderson links

Plenty of Crystal Palace fans have been reacting to the club’s reported interest in Wolves’ Dion Sanderson on social media.

According to Football Insider, the Eagles, along with Huddersfield Town, have joined Sheffield United in the race to sign the 21-year-old.

Sanderson is currently out on loan in the North East with Sunderland, becoming a regular under new manager Lee Johnson at the Stadium of Light in recent months.

His contract at Molineux expires in just over 12 months time, with the report claiming Sanderson could cost just £2m in the summer window.

The Englishman, who has tuned out on 22 occasions for the Eagles, is thought to be open to a move away, should his current employers decide to cash in the upcoming window.

Derby County: Bielik news upsets fans

Lots of Derby County fans have flocked to a tweet from The Athletic’s Derby correspondent Ryan Conway, which shared Rams manager Wayne Rooney’s revelation that Krystian Bielik has torn his right ACL for a second time.

The injury came during the East Midlands club’s 1-0 win over Bristol City on 30th January, however, the extent of the injury has only been confirmed more recently.

As explained in an article that Conway has written for The Athletic, Bielik tore his ACL last January too while playing with the Rams’ U23s to build up his fitness.

In this report, the journalist explained that the 23-year-old’s absence will be a significant blow for the relegation-battling side – something fans are well aware of anyway.

After Conway relayed Rooney’s confirmation of Bielik’s injury on Twitter, lots of Derby supporters flocked to his post.

So, how have these Derby County fans been reacting to this news?

This news has crushed many Rams supporters, who are understandably devastated for Bielik.

Rekeem Harper’s last chance saloon at West Brom

West Brom have sanctioned the temporary departure of Rekeem Harper this week…

What’s the word?

The out-of-favour midfielder has joined Championship outfit Birmingham City on loan until the end of the season, following in the footsteps of former Baggies attacker Jonathan Leko, who made a permanent switch in the summer.

Harper signed a new three-year deal upon Slaven Bilic’s arrival at the Hawthorns in the summer of 2019 despite reported interest from European giants Liverpool and Juventus among others.

Last chance saloon

The 20-year-old academy graduate has struggled for game time since making his debut in 2017, which was also the year of his first and only other loan spell away from the Midlands club.

Which means for the past two to three seasons, he’s pretty much been restricted to U23s football, even despite being earmarked as a future star by many former Albion manager – if those transfer links weren’t anything to go by above.

Indeed, Harper has only played 42 times for the first-team, of which only 17 have come since the start of the 2019/20 campaign, per Transfermarkt.

This could well be the last chance saloon for the former England U20 international as it’s hard to envisage him breaking into Sam Allardyce’s plans if firstly, he’s not currently in them despite their ongoing struggles and relegation battle, and secondly, if he fails to hit the ground running at St Andrew’s Stadium.

After Tony Pulis first promoted him into the senior fold, then-academy coach Jimmy Shan likened his ability to Premier League great Patrick Vieira, he told reporters:

“He can be a classic box-to-box midfielder like Patrick Vieira, he can play in a two or a three. He can play holding midfield, number 10 or number eight. He really is a talent who has got a lot of potential and the good thing is he’s working hard at his game.”

Similar thoughts were echoed by ex-boss Darren Moore, who said: “He excites the fans, he’s young, energetic, fresh, he’s enjoying his game, fearless – all the components of a really good player,” and then Bilic too: “I never denied that I love him as a player – I love those kind of players, who are powerhouses but can pass the ball, that’s great.”

Evidently, he now needs to prove that talent otherwise it’s going to be another case of unfulfilled potential at West Brom, another Saido Berahino, perhaps.Aside from all the transfer controversy, the former Baggies striker was clearly an impressive prospect as he bagged 14 goals in 38 appearances during the 2014/15 Premier League season.Though, now still only 27, he finds himself trying to salvage his career over in Belgium, playing for Charleroi on loan from Zulte Waregam. If Harper isn’t careful, then he’s in grave danger of becoming the next Berahino. He must deliver at Birmingham in these next six months. Those links to Liverpool and Juventus are a mere memory for the time being.

Allardyce may think twice on West Brom’s Kamil Grosicki

A sublime finish from Matheus Pereira wasn’t enough for West Brom to bring any sort of returns back to the Hawthorns on Tuesday night.

Sam Allardyce’s Baggies squad were defeated 2-1 by his former club West Ham, just days after Sam picked up his first victory since he took the helm in mid-December.

Overall, Albion’s performance was satisfactory and gives them some hope towards a brighter future, but they still remain some five points from safety with the worst defensive record in the Premier League – by quite some margin.

There was no return for Grady Diangana either and his absence was really felt on that left flank, especially as he started all four games under Allardyce before injury.

He’d surely have loved to make a point to his boyhood club after they let him leave for £18m in the summer, too.

Instead, Big Sam turned to Kamil Grosicki for a third successive match in all competitions – only this time, it failed to pay dividends.

The Polish veteran has been given a lifeline at West Brom in recent weeks. In the summer, he was seconds away from sealing a move to Nottingham Forest, but as the paperwork was submitted too late, he had to remain at their Midlands rivals.

He’s also been linked with an exit during the current winter transfer window, though for now, he’s still here. But after his display in the capital, the 66-year-old may want to think again.

As per SofaScore, only one other Baggies player was given a worse rating than Grosicki’s 6.4 and he was hugely at fault for the Hammers’ opener, losing his man only for him to serve up a delightful cross for Jarrod Bowen to turn home.

Indeed both Vladimir Coufal and Bowen had the better of the 32-year-old throughout the 70 minutes he was on the pitch – the pair managed 7.2 and 6.6 ratings respectively.

Considering the £50k-per-week ace is supposed to be one of Big Sam’s main attacking outlets, he was wasteful and ineffective at left-wing – per SofaScore, he failed to provide an accurate cross from three attempts, leaving Callum Robinson to feed off very little, and won just one of seven duels (14%).

That only goes to show just how lightweight the winger was against the aforementioned Irons duo and how they constantly thwarted him at either end of the pitch. By comparison, Coufal (six) and Bowen (four) won ten times as many duels.

It now gives Allardyce plenty to think about with an encounter against Man City six days away. If Diangana isn’t fit, then someone else may need to step up to the plate.

Only one other Albion player (who has started two or more games) has recorded a worse average rating for the season than Grosicki’s 6.19 – perhaps the club ought to be looking to move him on after all, even despite once being dubbed “unplayable” by former teammate Jackson Irvine.

If Tuesday’s game is anything to go by, he may well not be cut out for the big time.

AND in other news, Baggies lightweight who lost the ball every 2.8 touches BADLY let West Brom down on Tuesday…
