Newcastle must land Axel Witsel

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe strengthened his team with a host of new signings throughout the January window.

The Magpies head coach was given the funds by PIF to make major additions to his squad in the form of Kieran Trippier, Chris Wood, Matt Targett, Bruno Guimaraes and Dan Burn.

These players, along with the existing playing roster, have propelled the Toon clear of relegation. They are 11 points above the bottom three in the Premier League with three games left to play and look set for another year in the top flight.

The focus may now turn to the summer transfer window and the players they want to bring in to take the team to the next level.

Earlier this season, it was reported that Newcastle are interested in landing Borussia Dortmund gem Axel Witsel at the end of the campaign with a contract offer of €7m (£6m) per season.

They have recently been handed a golden opportunity to go through with that, as the Belgian midfielder has confirmed that he will be a free agent this summer, stating earlier this month: “I’ll be gone next season. I am very happy that I have played here (Dortmund) for four years at the highest level. But I am sad to leave the club. I have many friends and great teammates here.”

Howe must now pounce on this chance to swoop for the enforcer, for whom Dortmund paid €20m (£17.1m), as he would be a superb addition to the Newcastle squad with his quality and experience at the top level.

Dortmund icon Marco Reus previously heaped praise on the Belgian battler, saying: “Axel has a lot of international experience as a number six and a number eight. He radiates calmness and self-confidence – in critical situations, too. Axel showed what he can do at the World Cup. He will make us better.”

These comments show how highly Witsel’s captain rates him, which is understandable when you look at his career. The 33-year-old has played a staggering 120 matches for Belgium at senior level and featured in more than 100 games for each of Dortmund, Zenit and Standard Liege.

Throughout his career, he has averaged an impressive WhoScored rating of 6.98 across 353 outings, making 2.9 tackles and interceptions per game. This shows that the holding midfielder has played to a high standard consistently over the course of many years, which is why he would be a fine player for Howe to call upon.

Imagine him and Bruno Guimaraes lining up in the Magpies’ midfield. Whilst Witsel can use his defensive quality and experience to shield the back four and keep things ticking over, the Brazilian can go forward to inject life into the attack.

The January signing has four goals and one assist in eight Premier League starts, and his attacking flair mixed with the Belgian’s nous can make for an exciting midfield partnership, which is why Newcastle must snap up the 33-year-old on a free transfer.

Everton transfer news on Richarlison

Paul Robinson has now dropped an Everton claim after some transfer news emerged on Richarlison.

The Lowdown: £50m+ wanted

As per Football Insider, a recruitment source has revealed that the Goodison Park faithful will now listen to offers for Richarlison in the summer.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/everton-news-5/” title=”Everton news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

They are confident that they can sell him for at least £50m, as he is under contract on Merseyside until June 2024, putting the Toffees in an extremely strong negotiating position even if they go down.

The Latest: Robinson reacts

Speaking to Football Insider, former Tottenham Hotspur and England international goalkeeper Robinson, who now contributes for Sky Sports, has claimed that Richarlison’s price tag is ‘massive’, but admits that the Toffees need a ‘huge’ overhaul this summer, and so could look to cash in on the Brazil international:

“He has been in and out of form this season.

“I don’t think he’s been good enough in all honesty. They’re down in the bottom three for a reason.

“Richarlison has a massive price tag on his head and a massive reputation.

“He has not performed enough this season. He has scored a few important goals but it’s not been enough. Most of the Everton players have underperformed and he is one of them.

“They need a huge overhaul in the summer but the financial situation is difficult. They will have to sell before they buy. If Everton can get a good price for Richarlison they should cash in and revamp their squad with that money.

“I think it’s a similar situation to Raphinha at Leeds. They are the kind of luxury players you can afford to cash in on. Everton need players out of the door to bring in finances.

“They need players who are going to keep them in the Premier League next season. Richarlison isn’t consistent enough.”

The Verdict: Snap your hand off

If the Blues can get anywhere near £50m for Richarlison in the summer, then they should take it and run.

Yes, he has scored some important goals recently, including a last-minute equaliser in the 1-1 draw at home to Leicester City and most recently the winner against Chelsea, but overall has been far too inconsistent to warrant that price tag, scoring just nine times in total over all competitions so far this season (Transfermarkt).

Richarlison has also been criticised for having attitude problems when things do not go right for him on he pitch, and so a player who could be a disruption in the dressing room is one that Frank Lampard and his team could do without, should they receive a huge transfer sum.

Sidebottom returns to Yorkshire

Ryan Sidebottom is on his way back to Headingley after signing a three-year deal with Yorkshire.Sidebotoom, 32, left Yorkshire in 2004 when he moved to Nottinghamshire where he was a key part of their Championship winning sides in 2005 and 2010. In that time he also enjoyed a resurgent international career after playing a single, wicketless Test against Pakistan in 2001.He announced his retirement from international cricket at the end of the 2010 season after a series of injury problems and made clear his intentions to leave Nottinghamshire after being unable to agree terms with the club. Though money was not a concern, Sidebottom wanted the security of a three-year contract while Nottinghamshire were only willing to offer a full two-year deal.It is a significant loss for Nottinghamshire after Sidebottom took 27 wickets at 21.55 from his eight first-class games this season. In the dramatic conclusion to Nottinghamshire’s successful Championship season Sidebottom played a crucial role edging Nottinghamshire beyond 400 to secure a final bonus point, before claiming the wicket of Karl Brown to help the county take the crown.Yet for Yorkshire, who almost pipped Nottinghamshire to the title, it is a major boon to have a senior paceman at the club. Sidebottom fits into the policy at the club of trying to build a predominantly Yorkshire-born team and offers both experience and stability, after a season where Yorkshire’s new-ball pair, Tim Bresnan and Ajmal Shahzad, were both involved with the England side.”I have enjoyed my time at Trent Bridge and with England enormously, but I’m a Yorkshire lad and the opportunity to return to Headingley Carnegie to end my career was something I couldn’t ignore,” said Sidebottom. “The Yorkshire side has some real quality and under Martyn Moxon and Andrew Gale made real strides forward. I want to give the county everything I can over the next three years and if we can reward the Yorkshire public with a trophy or two that would be fantastic.”Martyn Moxon, the Yorkshire coach, echoed the excitement and sees Sidebottom playing an important role in developing fast-bowing talent at the club. “I am delighted that Ryan has chosen Yorkshire ahead of many other interested counties,” he said.”I think that proves Ryan’s Yorkshire pride in that he wants to return to Headingley Carnegie in 2011 and add his experience and talent to our bowling attack. He provides us with proven consistency and wicket-taking ability at county level and will provide Andrew Gale with a senior bowler of real quality to turn to next season.”

Ijaz Butt's UK trip on ICC members' radar

ESPNcricinfo understands that the possibility of suspending Butt from his role as an ICC director – for his extraordinary outburst against the ECB and the ICC – has “crossed the minds” of officials

Osman Samiuddin and Nagraj Gollapudi28-Sep-2010Ijaz Butt, the PCB chairman, has arrived in the UK on a visit that comes amid growing tension between the two national cricket boards, and with the ICC watching developments closely. ESPNcricinfo understands that the possibility of suspending Butt from his role as an ICC director – for his extraordinary outburst against the ECB and the ICC – has “crossed the minds” of officials, but such an extreme step will be averted if the boards of England and Pakistan achieve some sort of rapprochement; a meeting between the board heads is expected on Wednesday. In any case, there is a possibility that the matter might feature at the next ICC meeting, in Dubai, from October 12-13. At that meeting, Butt was reportedly aiming to table his own resolution calling for Lorgat’s removal.Butt has been on the warpath with the ICC and ECB since the spot-fixing scandal broke late last month. He is unhappy with the ICC’s provisional suspension of three Pakistan players, arguing that a separate police investigation should have been allowed to reach its conclusion before any such action was taken. Last week, an enraged Butt launched a series of extraordinary public attacks on the England side, the ECB and the ICC; this, the morning after what ESPNcricinfo understands to have been an amicable dinner meeting between Butt and Lorgat in Dubai.Butt is expected to meet with Giles Clarke, the ECB chairman, to try and resolve the issue. “Sometime today [Wednesday] Ijaz Butt and Giles Clarke will engage in an attempt to resolve those misunderstandings or issues levelled against the ECB,” Lorgat told . “We would always encourage our members to be in the best harmony as possible and it’s important for us they have good relations. Both are directors of the ICC so they have a larger responsibility to the game and I would hope they would come to a good and settled position.”The outburst prompted top ICC officials to give more than a passing thought to suspending Butt as ICC director – all board heads of full member countries automatically hold this post in the ICC. The suspension would be for a breach of the post’s own, separate code of ethics, which require individual directors to take a broader, more global view of the game; in this code, for example, casting allegations against a fellow member, such as Butt did against England, constitutes a breach. It is believed that there might be several cases over the last two years where Butt has breached this code.Much will depend on how the PCB’s spat with the ECB plays out. “Those [thoughts of suspending an ICC director] are things that are exercising ICC minds,” a source told ESPNcricinfo. “They’d rather wait to see what transpires between ECB and PCB. The ECB have made it clear they want to take some action so there is no point the ICC getting involved in what could be a legal case. The ICC does have a code of ethics and it has crossed their minds but there might be no need to take this action if there is a legal action against Butt. If he does apologise, the ICC have to see what to do because if he has apologized then what can you do? Nobody has come forward and made any noise of suspension yet but that doesn’t mean nobody will do that. Someone might have something to say at the next board meeting.”Butt claimed “there was loud and clear talk in bookie circles of English players taking enormous amounts of money” in the Oval ODI, after which the ECB sent a letter to Butt asking for a full apology. Unless one is made, says the ECB, legal action will be taken against Butt. Reports suggest that Butt is unwilling to apologise. Last week there were discussions (but no decisions were made) in the PCB’s corridors of power over the possibility of initiating a tit-for-tat legal action against Jonathon Trott as counter; the batsman had nearly come to blows with fast bowler Wahab Riaz in nets before the fourth ODI at Lord’s after an altercation. Butt’s trip to the UK – with the board’s legal advisor Taffazul Rizvi – raises the possibility that he might engage in efforts to reconcile with the ECB.Every ICC director is obligated, under the ethics code, to report or refer what they believe to have been a breach of the code to the ICC ethics officer. Any motion for suspension will require a two-thirds majority vote from directors to be implemented. The signs are not good for the PCB, for the tiff with the ECB is indicative of an administration that has made few friends in two years; only last year the Asian bloc was upset over clumsy attempts by the PCB to have the 2011 World Cup moved away from the subcontinent; the relationship with the BCCI is dependent on political ties, which are not good; the PCB was one of the boards not in favour of Australia and New Zealand’s nomination of John Howard for the role of ICC vice-president. It also remains with the ambit of powers of the ICC president or the ethics officer to suspend a director if a breach has occurred.Relations between the PCB and ICC itself, meanwhile, have been tense almost from the day Butt took over as chairman in October 2008. In one of his very first press conferences in Lahore, Butt annoyed the ICC when he publicly revealed information from confidential meetings ICC directors had on the IPL and ICL.Since then, matters have become more acute. The most serious clash came over the 2011 World Cup last March; Pakistan was removed as one of the venues from the tournament after the terror attacks on the Sri Lankan team in Lahore and a generally unstable security situation in the country. The PCB threatened to take the ICC to court over the decision, though eventually a compromise was agreed upon. The spot-fixing scandal has stretched ties to breaking point.Butt’s suspension, though, would not mean suspending the PCB as a full member or harming Pakistan in any way. The suspension would apply only to Butt and prevent him from attending ICC meetings. In such cases, the ICC is likely to ask the PCB to appoint a replacement.

Newcastle transfer news on Renan Lodi

Jacque Talbot has revealed that Renan Lodi is now ‘one to watch’ for Newcastle United on Transfer Deadline Day.

The Lowdown: Targett alternative?

It has widely been reported that Matt Targett could arrive at St James’ Park on loan from Aston Villa today, but in case they cannot get him, the Magpies will have other targets lined up for the left-back spot.

Dan Burn looks set to become their fourth signing of the January transfer window after Kieran Trippier, Chris Wood and Bruno Guimaraes, and with the majority of positions on the pitch covered, it looks as if left-back could be the next one to target.

The Latest: Lodi ‘one to watch’

As per Talbot, Atletico Madrid left-back Lodi is now set to be ‘one to watch’ for Newcastle going into Deadline Day, although he admits that a move for the Brazilian could be one for the summer, tweeting:

“Understand Renan Lodi is one to watch for Newcastle, who are looking for a left-back. Atletico want 40m euros.

“Might be one for the summer, though.”

The Verdict: Get it done

Money is not an object to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) consortium, so paying €40m (£33.3m) for Lodi should not be a problem.

He is a left-back playing at the highest level, having helped Atletico to win the La Liga title last season, and he has played many times in the Champions League over the past three years.

The Brazilian is still only 23 years of age as well, and if he is up for the relegation fight, then he could be a shrewd last-minute buy for the new owners at Newcastle.

James Franklin hundred sets up Gloucestershire win

James Franklin’s first one-day century inspired Gloucestershire Gladiators to a51-run win over Derbyshire Falcons in the opening Clydesdale Bank 40 fixture atBristol

25-Apr-2010
ScorecardJames Franklin’s first one-day century inspired Gloucestershire Gladiators to a51-run win over Derbyshire Falcons in the opening Clydesdale Bank 40 fixture atBristol. The New Zealand all-rounder responded to his new position as opener by hitting133 off 121 balls, with 10 fours and three sixes, as his side ran up 230 for5 after losing the toss. Alex Gidman (35) and Chris Taylor (32) offered good support.Steve Kirby (3 for 44) then took two early wickets to reduce Derbyshire to31 for 2 and, despite 37 from Chris Rogers and 41 from John Sadler, thevisitors were restricted to 179 all out. It was an important win for Gloucestershire, beaten at home in their first two County Championship games of the season. Batting frailty in those matches led to the experiment of promoting Franklin up the order and he responded with a superbly-paced innings.Overcoming the early loss of Jonathan Batty and Hamish Marshall, the elegantleft-hander added 89 in 17 overs with Gidman and 70 in 10 overs with Taylor. Franklin owed his hundred to Taylor’s quick thinking. On 95 he would have been run out had his partner not sacrificed himself by crossing before bowler Tom Lungley’s throw hit the stumps.Soon afterwards the Kiwi reached three figures off 104 balls. Surprisingly foran international player of his pedigree, it was the first time he had done so inany one-day competition at home or in England. Franklin’s three sixes were all hit straight down the ground.Tim Groenewald was the pick of the Derbyshire attack conceding 37 runs from hiseight overs. After Kirby’s double strike, Rogers and Greg Smith put on 47 in 11 overs forthe Falcons third wicket before Smith (28) was caught at the second attempt bywicketkeeper Batty off Gidman. There was still hope for Derbyshire at 103 for 3. But then Garry Park, on13, carelessly swung off-spinner Taylor’s first ball of the game down the throatof Steve Snell at deep mid-wicket. The key wicket of Rogers followed when he had a swing at Franklin and skied a steepling catch to Batty. At 107 for 5, the Falcons were suddenly staring down the barrel.Sadler ensured their total would reach respectability by being last man out, having hit his 41 off 34 balls, but it was always in a losing cause. He became Kirby’s third victim, while Anthony Ireland and Taylor claimed two each.

Celtic: Boli Bolingoli could depart

Celtic will look to move on left-back Boli Bolingoli in the New Year, according to The Athletic’s Kieran Devlin.

The Lowdown: Bolingoli under Postecoglou

Bolingoli was linked with a move to Turkish side Altay SK over the summer, however, as we know, a move never materialised.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/celtic-updates-20/” title=”Celtic updates!!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The 26-year-old hasn’t featured heavily under Ange Postecoglou, even though first-choice left-back Greg Taylor missed 17 games due to a shoulder problem. Bolingoli has made just two appearances in all competitions, the last of which came back in October.

Pundit Alex McLeish believes Postecoglou ‘doesn’t like’ something in the Ivorian’s game, while the club even labelled the full-back as ‘stupid’ following his health protocol breach last year. And it now seems as if he could leave Parkhead over the coming weeks.

The Latest: Devlin’s claim

Devlin shared a transfer mailbag on The Athletic on Wednesday, providing numerous Parkhead updates.

One fan said to the reliable reporter that Vasilis Barkas and Albian Ajeti should go in January.

Devlin responded by saying that Barkas is ‘definitely one the club are looking to move on’, before adding that ‘one source’ has suggested it is the same for Bolingoli.

The Verdict: Correct call

Celtic made 12 signings over the summer, and even though it may not feel like it due to injuries, the Hoops have a fairly big squad.

They are also looking at signing three Japanese players in January, so moving on the likes of Bolingoli and Barkas, who have hardly featured under Postecoglou, appears to be the right decision, trimming the fringes of the squad and cutting down the wage bill.

The pair have been expensive mistakes with Bolingoli costing £3m and Barkas £4.5m, so the Hoops should do all they can to get as much as possible for the pair in 2022.

In other news: Celtic now reach another January agreement on ‘tireless worker’; Nicholson isn’t hanging around.
