Leeds must sign O’Dowda instead of Hastie and James

Leeds United have managed to rediscover some form after their disappointing loss against Norwich City, having taken four points from their last two Championship fixtures.

The Whites have been completely redefined under the guidance of Marcelo Bielsa after a rather disappointing campaign last time round, with promotion to the Premier League being the main aim from here on in.

Interestingly, the Yorkshire club have been linked with a couple of wingers in recent times, as the Whites are believed to still be very interested in signing Daniel James and Leeds reportedly (as per Daily Record) had scouts watching Motherwell youngster Jake Hastie against St Mirren.

Indeed, James has been impressive at Swansea City in the current campaign, with three goals and five assists to his name at this moment in time, while Hastie has made a name for himself in the Scottish Premiership in recent times, having produced four goals and one assist in eight appearances.

However, Leeds should forget about the promising pair and set their sights on a man who was linked (as per Sky Sports reporter Tim Thornton) with a move to Elland Road back in the January transfer window, Callum O’Dowda.

And, the winger may leave Ashton Gate in the summer as it’s understood (as per Bristol Post) that there’s little prospect currently of O’Dowda signing a long-term contract renewal before the end of the season.

The Republic of Ireland international star has established himself as one of the brightest sparks in English football in the current campaign, having produced an impressive four goals and five assists. He hasn’t managed to produce an incredible amount of contributions, but it’s what he does in the build-up to goals that makes him a special player with the ability to get into promising positions and start attacks from deep.

Marcelo Bielsa encourages his wingers to get forward and attack the opposition’s defenders, which is exactly what O’Dowda thrives at and he even managed to cause Wolves lots of problems in the FA Cup recently, so it’s clear to see that he has the ability to cause Premier League teams problems, with the potential to develop into a star too.

What do you think Leeds United fans?

Pablo Hernandez’s comments should worry Leeds fans

[ad_pod ]

Leeds United’s promotion push currently hangs in the balance. Defeat to QPR last time out saw the Whites lose the initiative in the Championship title race. On Friday, Marcelo Bielsa’s side take on fellow promotion contenders West Bromwich Albion at Elland Road.

Another defeat at this stage in the season could be catastrophic for the Yorkshire club. The pressure is certainly mounting, and the recent comments from veteran attacking midfielder Pablo Hernandez should worry fans of the side.

Tensions boiled over between Leeds and Bolton at the weekend and our man Thogden was on the scene. Check out the video below…

What he said

In a pre-match press conference, as quoted by the Yorkshire Evening Post, the 33-year-old was asked about his thoughts on the approaching clash with the Baggies. The Spaniard said: “We know it is an important game. We know if we win we can open up a gap over them. We don’t need to think too much. We just try to win the three points. We play better without pressure.”

Embracing the pressure

What should worry Leeds fans is Hernandez’s reference to pressure. Whether the 4-cap former Spain international likes it or not, it is something that is very much already on. Leeds only playing at their best without pressure won’t help them now as there is going to be intense scrutiny on them now in each of their remaining games this season.

Bielsa needs to find a way to get his team to produce their best in those sorts of situations – failure to do so will see them fall short of their Premier League dream again.

Signing Gary Cahill and Tyrone Mings would transform Aston Villa’s defence

[ad_pod ]

According to The Birmingham Mail, Aston Villa’s January window is far from over and the Midlands club will look to bring in three new faces before the end of the month. Newcastle’s Isaac Hayden is a target, while Chelsea’s Gary Cahill and Bournemouth’s Tyrone Mings are also on the radar – the latter duo could transform the Villans defence if Dean Smith can get them in.

On the chalkboard

The Birmingham Mail reports that the trio, who are all being targeted with the aim of establishing defensive security at Villa Park, will be moving to the Midlands if Smith gets his way, with Birkir Bjarnason also being allowed to leave should a suitable offer come in.

Villa lost out to Bournemouth in the battle for Brentford centre-back Chris Mepham’s signature earlier this month – the Welshman opted for the Cherries instead – but have identified other targets as they look to plug a defence that has leaked 46 goals already this campaign.

If they can get Mings and Cahill in, we could be seeing a completely new look come February and the Villans may finally start racking up the clean sheets.

How do they change the defence?

Villa have been lacking a leader in the backline since John Terry retired at the end of last season having guided them to a play-off final – the Chelsea legend’s presence has been sorely missed at the heart of defence – but the signing of old friend Cahill would help regiment the team immediately.

The 33-year-old might not fit the bill at Stamford Bridge, most likely due to a lack of technical ability, but he is arguably the best defender in the ranks in terms of clearing his lines and getting his body in the way – Villa simply need to do both of those more often and it’s clear to see how he would make a huge impact.

Mings, meanwhile, gives Smith the interesting option of switching to a five-at-the-back formation – the 6-foot-5 defender can play at both left-back and centre-back – and doing so could mean the ball hits the back of the Villa net much less frequently.

If Villa want to push for promotion via the coveted play-off spots, they need to sharpen up at the back – Tammy Abraham can’t fire them to glory if they let in as many goals at the other end – and maybe straying away from the 4-2-3-1 in favour of a 5-4-1, for instance, is the way forward.

However, this only seems possible if Cahill and Mings, in particular, are brought on board; the clock is ticking at Villa Park.

China Women's World Cup 2023 squad: Who's in & who's out?

Who has coach Shui Qingxia selected in China Women's World Cup squad? GOAL takes a look…

The China national women's team will be playing in their eighth FIFA World Cup finals in July, which will be held in Australia and New Zealand.

Shui Qingxia's troops are the reigning Asian champions and qualified directly for the tournament.

In 1999, they finished as runners-up, which is their best performance to date and in this edition, they would like to create history by lifting the World Cup.

In the 2023 Women's World Cup, they have been drawn in Group D with Denmark, England and Haiti.

Who has made Qingxia's final 23-player World Cup squad? GOAL takes a look…

Xu Huan is the undisputed number one for China between the sticks. The 24-year-old keeper of Jiangsu LFC is the most-trusted lieutenant of Qingxia under the bar and should have the gloves in the World Cup.

Meanwhile, Zhu Yu should be the second-choice keeper. She was given an opportunity to impress against Sweden and claim the No. 1 spot but conceded four goals in that match which saw Xu brought back against Ireland.

Meanwhile, the fight for the third spot should go to experienced keeper Zhao Lina of Shanghai Shengli.

Qinxia sets her team up with a four-woman backline. They generally play deep to keep things tight at the back.

Their efforts paid dividends in the 2022 Asian Cup as they conceded just five goals in the entire tournament. It would not be surprising if they defend with two banks of four to frustrate the likes of England and Denmark.

Paris Saint-Germain's Li Mengwen, on-loan from Jiangsu, should be the first choice at right-back. And if Mengwen is unfit, Gao Chen can slot in her place.

The likes of Duo Jiaxing, Yao Wei and Wang Linlin are among the first-choice centre-backs.

Chen Qiaozhu should be fielded in the left-back position.

It is primarily a four-woman midfield with Yao Lingwei entrusted with the responsibility to break down attacks and act as a defensive screener. She is supported by Zhang Rui, who has the license to go forward and join the attack.

Yang Lina is another option who can sit back and absorb the pressure. She will be useful against offensive teams when China will most likely sit deep and maintain their shape, with Zhang Linyan usually deployed on the left.

The likes of Wu Chengshu and Shen Mengyu add further depth in midfield.

Getty ImagesFORWARDS

China's veteran forward Wang Shanshan is the key player of the squad. The forward has close to 150 caps and scored over 50 goals.

She is one of those rare players who can play at both ends of the pitch with aplomb. In the 2022 AFC Asian Cup she was fielded as a centre-back in the semi-final and final, and yet she came out with flying colours.

Shanshan was named as the Chinese Women's Footballer of the Year in 2022, and her presence will be key in what will be her third World Cup.

Wang Shuang has over 120 international caps and has scored 43 goals for China. Her scathing pace along with her dribbling abilities make her a potent threat in the wide areas.

Tang Jiali can be the X-factor in the Chinese team as she boasts of having spent the previous 18 months in Europe with both Tottenham and Madrid CFF, becoming the first female Chinese player to play in England.

She has the vision to split open defences and is strong on both feet, making her an exceptional talent in attacking.

Ronaldo Zinedin Hernandez – Santos Laguna

His mother wanted to name him after the France legend, while his father preferred using the Brazil forward as a namesake. They went with both. So far, the 15-year-old is living up to the names. A Torreon native, he's playing with Mexico's U-17s and scored a hat trick in a February friendly.

Finch hit on chest, taken to hospital

Aaron Finch was taken to hospital after been hit on the chest by a delivery while playing for Yorkshire’s 2nd XI on Monday.Finch, the Australia limited-overs opener, was part of the side taking on Worcestershire seconds in Barnt Green, south of Birmingham, when he was hit while attempting a pull shot off the seamer Chris Russell. While Finch walked from the pitch unaided, he was clearly in some pain and, after spitting up blood, was quickly taken to hospital. At hospital he underwent a series of tests and X-rays to ascertain the extent of the injuries, with Yorkshire suggesting that his condition had eased considerably. He was not required to stay in hospital.A club spokesperson later told ESPNcricinfo that he would take no further part in the game. He returned to Leeds on Monday evening and expects the result of the scans on Tuesday. While Finch had been expected to play for the Yorkshire first team in their fixture against Nottinghamshire starting on Monday, the club instead decided he could do with some red-ball cricket before coming into their Championship side.Finch was due to join Yorkshire immediately after a spell in the IPL but suffered a hamstring injury while playing for Mumbai Indians that kept him out for two months.

Board panel has 82 questions for BCCI bosses

The RM Lodha committee appointed by India’s Supreme Court has sent an 82-point questionnaire to top board administrators seeking clarity on the way the richest sports body in India functions

The Lodha committee’s questionairre also asks for clarity on transparency of the IPL•AFP

The RM Lodha committee appointed by India’s Supreme Court has sent an 82-point questionnaire to top board administrators seeking clarity on the way the richest sports body in India functions. This questionnaire, incisive and pointed, is in keeping with the committee’s brief from the court to recommend changes to the BCCI’s constitution and manner of functioning. The questions have been split into eight sections, including understanding how the BCCI and its stakeholders function, the basis and formation of the board’s various committees, the board’s election process, players’ welfare, conflict of interest and transparency in the IPL.The questionnaire was sent by the committee on April 7 to all those who have held top positions in the BCCI since the IPL corruption scandal broke in May 2013. They included N Srinivasan, Sanjay Jagdale, Ajay Shirke, Anurag Thakur, Sanjay Patel, Ravi Savant, Anirudh Chaudhry, Amitabh Chaudhary and Jagmohan Dalmiya. There was also a request to be present in person to interact with the panel in Mumbai on April 9 and 10. It is understood that Dalmiya and board secretary Anurag Thakur pulled out despite having confirmed last Wednesday evening the schedule of their arrival.Five key questions

What are your views on the BCCI being constituted as – (i) Society under the Societies’ Registration Act; (ii) Company under the Companies Act; (iii) Public Trust? Which is best suited and why?

What is the basis for zonal rotation of the President? Would it not be appropriate to have open elections for the posts? Can a candidate contest from a zone/region to which he does not belong?

On what basis does the BCCI nominate Indian representatives on the ICC and its various committees? Is there an electoral college and what are the parameters of selection?

On what basis are tour managers and technical crew for the teams selected? Are there tests and interviews? Are these advertised? What is the remuneration for these and do these engagements have tenures or are they open-ended?

To what extent are players represented on the board and is there any channel for their grievances to be aired?

While passing its seminal and wide-ranging order on corruption in the IPL, the court had appointed an independent three-man committee headed by Lodha, a former Chief Justice of India, along with retired Supreme Court judges Ashok Bhan and RV Raveendran. The committee was tasked with determining the quantum of punishment for Gurunath Meiyappan, Raj Kundra and their respective franchises, and also to “examine and make suitable recommendations to the BCCI for such reforms in its practices and procedures and such amendments in the Memorandum of Association, Rules and Regulations as may be considered necessary and proper.”It is understood that the committee, while carrying out the research before it finalised the questionnaire, was concerned about the ad-hoc manner of the BCCI’s functioning. So it sought clarity on aspects like the structural component of the BCCI and the IPL, where the BCCI sources its power from, how the elections are conducted, how are the funds allocated to various stakeholders to name a few areas. One key point in the entire IPL corruption case is the issue of conflict of interest in N Srinivasan, the BCCI president at the time, being the owner of the Chennai Super Kings franchise, facilitated by an amendment to the board’s constitution while Srinivasan was secretary. The Supreme Court had struck down the controversial constitutional amendment that allowed board officials to have commercial interests in the IPL and the Champions League Twenty20, calling it “the true villain of the situation at hand.”So the Lodha committee wanted to know whether there is a “consultation process” for amending the Constitution and bye-laws and if  the BCCI provides “explanation and justification” for such measures. It also raised the question as to how would the BCCI establish when a player or a team official had a conflict of interest. “When a player/team official of an IPL team is the employee of the franchisee/owner of another team, does BCCI perceive a Conflict of Interest? What steps are taken prevent such situations?”Laying special emphasis on player welfare the committee raised 16 questions on the subject including seeking the BCCI’s views on if there should be a players association. India is the only country not to have one.The committee wanted to know whether players form part of the board’s constitution and if there is a platform for them to air grievances.  “Who negotiates contracts on behalf of the players? Are the players consulted by the Board before team sponsorship and endorsement deals are entered into?” was another key question Lodha’s team wanted to know.Transparency was another area the committee laid emphasis on. Twice the panel pointed out whether there was an independent regulator governing important events such as the board elections. “Is there an independent ombudsman for general oversight over the functioning of the BCCI and IPL and what powers are available to it?” the committee asked. It was also interested to know whether the BCCI or the IPL has “a whistleblower/immunity policy”?Although majority of the 82 questions were basic in nature, the panel possibly revealed the broad nature of its inquiry in the final question: “Do you have any suggestions to improve the accountability, elections, governance, transparency and general administration of the game, thereby improving overall integrity of cricket?”Reactions within the BCCI are conflicted. While one official downplayed the issue, saying the process was routine, another insider admitted the questionnaire gives the first indication of the “gravity of ramifications” the report could have on the administration of the game in India.
