Man United in the lead for Darwin Nunez

Manchester United appear to be leading the likes of Tottenham in the race to sign Benfica forward Darwin Nunez.

The Lowdown: Man Utd interest in Nunez

Described as an ‘absolute beast’ earlier this month during a podcast discussing his display against Liverpool, the Uruguayan appears to be a man in demand this summer following his starring campaign in Portugal.

The 22-year-old has scored a whopping 33 goals in 39 games, impressing as a centre-forward, second striker and left winger.

The Uruguay international was linked with a big-money move to Manchester last week, and a fresh update has now emerged in their pursuit of a possible club-record deal.

The Latest: United leading the way for Nunez

Sport Witness relayed an update from Spanish outlet AS regarding Nunez on Tuesday. They claimed that 22-year-old could link up with super-agent Jorge Mendes, who is set to meet with ‘several English clubs’ regarding the Benfica forward.

United are thought to be ‘in the lead’ following an ‘express request’ from new manager Erik ten Hag.

The Verdict: Huge

Cristiano Ronaldo looks likely to be the only senior centre-forward available to Ten Hag when he arrives, with Edinson Cavani set to depart Old Trafford over the coming months.

Therefore, bringing in an exciting young attacker who has been prolific this season in numerous positions seems to be a smart move going forward.

Benfica want €130m for Nunez, which equates to around £109m and would make him the most expensive United signing of all time ahead of Paul Pogba, but it could prove to be the perfect one for Ten Hag in what the Red Devils are hoping will be a new era for the club.

When West Brom tried to sign Luka Modric

West Bromwich Albion have been through numerous transfer windows over the years as the Midlands club have been in and out of the Premier League and Championship.

As a result, numerous players have made moves to the club either on loan or permanent deals.

One player, however, that the Baggies were reportedly keen on signing that didn’t end up at the Hawthorns is Luka Modric.

According to the Birmingham Mail, the Croatian was on Tony Mowbray’s radar in the summer of 2007 and would have made a move to bring him to the Hawthorns had they secured promotion to the Premier League, which they ultimately didn’t.

After scoring 22 goals and providing 21 assists in 73 appearances for Dinamo Zagreb, the midfielder did end up making a move to England.

In a deal worth a reported fee of £16.5m, Modric signed to Tottenham Hotspur in the 2008 summer transfer window.

Having played in 160 games for the north London club, scoring 17 times and delivering 26 assists, the player found himself on the move again in 2012, this time to his current club Real Madrid.

During his time in Spain, the 36-year-old has scored 31 goals and provided 70 assists in 429 appearances, winning four Champions League titles among many other trophies.

The former Spurs star has also picked up several individual awards such as the Ballon d’Or and UEFA’s Best Player in Europe, both in 2018, the same year he played in the World Cup final.

This season has seen the former Baggies target earn himself an overall performance rating of 7.24 from WhoScored for his efforts in the Champions League, making him Real’s fourth-highest rated player.

This highlights just how capable the veteran still is of playing on the big stage against top opposition.

Labelled an “extraordinary” player by Carlo Ancelotti, Modric has undeniably gone on to have an incredible career since leaving England.

Taking all of this into account, it’s safe to say that missing out on potentially signing the £275k-per-week midfield maestro has been an almighty howler from the Midlands club.

Had they been able to reach the Premier League and secure the Croatian’s signature when they were looking at him, there’s no telling what sort of superstar that he could have been for the Baggies.

Leeds step up chase for Josko Gvardiol

Leeds United are now stepping up their chase to sign RB Leipzig centre-back Josko Gvardiol in the summer transfer window.

What’s the story?

According to reports, Jesse Marsch’s side have tracked the Croatia international for two years now, and they initially came close to signing him back in the summer of 2020.

It is now suggested that Victor Orta and his recruitment team have continued to keep tabs on the defender and are finally ready to make their move.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-leeds-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-marsch-raphinha-dest-philhay” title=”Read the latest Leeds news!”]

However, while Leeds scouts have been present at some of his recent matches, they are likely to face competition from other Premier League clubs for his signature too.

Perfect signing for Marsch

Valued at a whopping £100m by CIES, a fee which would shatter Leeds’ club-record outlay, Gvardiol is very much emerging as one of European football’s brightest centre-back prospects.

In an analytics-based profile done on the 20-year-old by The Athletic, they noted: “When it comes to defending, Gvardiol looks to be well-trained in the aggressive Leipzig way. He is always active in getting tight to his man (defending intensity 99 out of 99). He is also above average in his frequency of ball recoveries and interceptions (79 out of 99), highlighting how much he likes to step out and read the play.”

Meanwhile, in a piece for BBC Sport earlier last month, journalist Izak Ante Sucic claimed that the defender is “built like a tank” and that those in his homeland liken him to Liverpool powerhouse Virgil van Dijk.

He said: “In Croatia we like to compare him to Virgil van Dijk, because he’s built that way (6 foot 1). He’s one of his role models in football and he’s also mentioned Thiago Silva and Sergio Ramos – Ramos because he’s also one of those players who likes to score as many goals as he can.

“In my opinion, I think he can be as good as Virgil one day. When you see how he behaves on the field and off the field, he’s one of those guys where you’d say ‘he’s going to succeed’.”

The Van Dijk comparisons certainly paint a picture of just how highly-rated Gvardiol is, and given the Whites’ defensive troubles this season – they have conceded 68 goals in the Premier League, the most of any team – he could come in and have a huge impact.

Also, with his ability to play at both centre-back and left-back, the young Croatian offers a versatility which would be invaluable to Marsch, given both the club’s tragic injury record and the unconvincing performances of summer signing Junior Firpo.

It’s a move which would certainly have the Leeds manager delighted.

Chelsea keen on summer Raphinha move

Chelsea are keen on making a move for Leeds United winger Raphinha at the end of the season, according to an update from journalist Gianluigi Longari.

The Lowdown: Raphinha on the move?

The Brazilian has continued to be a star player for Marcelo Bielsa’s side this season, providing consistent quality while other key men have either struggled or been injured.

He has scored eight times in the league and averages by far the highest match rating of any player in the squad (Whoscored).

Raphinha should hopefully stay put in the January transfer window but a summer exit feels possible, especially if worst comes to worst and Bielsa cannot save his injury-stricken squad from the drop.

The 25-year-old has already been linked with a move away and now a fresh update has emerged.

The Latest: Chelsea keen on signing Brazilian

Taking to Twitter on Friday, Longari confirmed Chelsea’s interest in the former Rennes starlet:

“For the summer so many clubs are interested in him, and Chelsea appreciate him so much.”

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-news-33/” title=”Latest Leeds United news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Matter of time?

In truth, it is easy to envisage Raphinha enjoying a fresh challenge this summer, as he comes into the peak years of his career at 25 years of age.

In an ideal world, he would stay at Leeds for several more seasons but he may feel he belongs at a Champions League-playing club, having been hailed as ‘wonderful’ by BBC pundit Danny Murphy for his incredible play in Yorkshire.

It would be hard to begrudge Raphinha a big-money switch but Leeds must only sell him if they receive a monstrous bid and then must use the money to bring in top-class additions of their own.

Everton fans blast Kenny v Aston Villa

Lots of Everton fans were critical of the performance of Jonjoe Kenny in their 1-0 defeat at home to Aston Villa in the Premier League on Saturday.

With Nathan Patterson unavailable and Seamus Coleman dropped to the bench, Kenny was left to play at right-back, and he seemed to struggle throughout the game up against both Lucas Digne and Philippe Coutinho.

The 24-year-old lost out on three of his duels and failed to make a single dribble, tackle or cross, while he also lost possession of the ball on 24 different occasions in total, the most out of any of his teammates (SofaScore).

He did not do enough to warrant keeping his starting place ahead of Coleman and Patterson, and Duncan Ferguson now has a selection dilemma to ponder ahead of Everton’s next match.

Alviro Petersen and Heino Kuhn give visitors control

ScorecardAlviro Petersen and Heino Kuhn cracked hundreds as South Africa A put in a commanding batting display on the second day against Bangladesh A at Mirpur. The twin tons along with a number of useful contributions elsewhere led the visitors to 436 for 5, a lead of 90, and with Kuhn unbeaten on 140 alongside Thami Tsolekile on 59 the advantage could swell to commanding proportions. The innings was given a strong base in reply to Bangladesh’s 346 with Petersen and Dean Elgar added 103 for the first wicket in 19 overs. It was a scoring rate maintained throughout much of the day as runs came at a touch under five an over. When Petersen fell to Faisal Hossain for 116 the home side would have hopes of getting back into the match with South Africa A on 217 for 4, but a fifth-wicket stand of 106 between Kuhn and Jonathan Vandier (51) took the game away from them. Kuhn, who is known on the South Africa domestic scene for scoring rapid runs, took three hours over his hundred while Tsolekile ensured the momentum wasn’t lost in his 70-ball innings. There wasn’t much for the Bangladesh attack to enjoy although Faisal toiled hard for his three wickets. Noor Hossain took the other two scalps but conceded seven an over, while it was a disappointing day for Shahadat Hossain as he went wicketless through 12 overs.
