Dhoni protected from tough questions

MS Dhoni was barred by the BCCI-appointed media manager from answering any question related to the alleged corruption issues during the Champions Trophy pre-departure press conference

Amol Karhadkar in Mumbai28-May-2013On the eve of the Indian team’s departure to England for the Champions Trophy – their first assignment after a controversial IPL – MS Dhoni was barred by the BCCI-appointed media manager, RN Baba, from answering any question related to the alleged corruption issues in the league. Each time a question about the controversy was put forth during the 14-minute interaction, Baba intervened. It appeared as though Baba, who is from the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association, was under strict instructions to not let the captain respond to any query that was remotely concerned with the controversy. Before the start of the press conference, Baba had announced that the interaction was “strictly pertaining to Champions Trophy and no other questions will be answered”. But considering the number of arrests that have been made in the last couple of weeks, including those of four first-class cricketers, the questions had to be asked.Four times Dhoni was asked to share his views on the alleged corruption issue. ‘What do you have to say about spot-fixing? Has there been an impact on players going into the Champions Trophy?’ ‘As the leader of the Indian cricket fraternity, why isn’t that we’ve not heard from you so far?’ ‘Can you guarantee Indian cricket fans that during the Champions Trophy, there will be no mischief on the field?’ ‘Do you know Vindoo Dara Singh personally?’Baba waited for each question to be completed before fending it off by saying, “next question, please.” Almost on every occasion, Dhoni’s face turned blank. Only once did he react with his trademark grin. This was in stark contrast to a usual Dhoni press conference that often ends up as a light-hearted interaction. But considering that Indian cricket is going through one of its most tumultuous phases that’s resulted in arrests of players, bookies, film actors and the BCCI president’s son-in-law, everyone who had congregated at a five-star hotel next to Mumbai’s international airport knew this was not going to be the usual freewheeling chat.Dhoni had evaded questions during the last week of the IPL at least three times, even skipping what used be a mandatory pre-match press conference for captains on the eve of the final. However, with the Indian team set to depart for England for participating in the last edition of the Champions Trophy, he had to face the media on Tuesday evening. Finally, a seasoned journalist diplomatically asked Dhoni whether the team would enter the Champions Trophy with an extra sense of responsibility – the last question of the interaction.”As cricketers, we always have that extra sense of responsibility with us,” Dhoni said. “It is our job to bring people into the arena and to encourage the youngsters who aspire to take up (cricket) as a livelihood and as professional cricketers. There is a responsibility on us and hopefully we can fulfill it to our potential.”

Tough choices and taking chances, Katie Levick relishes Durham debut

When Diamonds aren’t forever, legspinner makes the most of precious opportunity further north

Valkerie Baynes23-Apr-2025When Durham won the right to field a team in the top tier of women’s domestic cricket, the worlds of every Northern Diamonds squad member changed in a moment.Yorkshire, which fed heavily into that now-defunct outfit, had been overlooked and instead placed in Tier 2 of the new county-based structure for 2025, albeit only for a year now with their inclusion in Tier 1 subsequently brought forward to 2026. It left a number of players facing a tough choice – relocate to play at the highest level or mark time at home in the lower ranks. One of those players was Katie Levick, the Yorkshire born-and-bred legspinner who has consistently been one of the nation’s leading bowlers outside of the England set-up over the past five years. She believes it is testament to the closeness of that Diamonds group that her decision to accept Durham’s offer of a three-year contract was met only with encouragement from her former team-mates.”The way everything played out last year we probably sort of trauma-bonded, that group of Diamonds girls,” Levick told ESPNcricinfo on the eve of Durham’s first game, against Essex in the Metro Bank One-Day Cup. “It was a tough time for all of us to try and make a decision.”One of the worst things for that particular team is that we were such an incredibly close-knit squad. We were genuinely a group of 15 friends that hung out together outside of cricket and just loved playing their cricket together. Unfortunately, the decision came, as it did, and we all chose different paths.”But that’s also professional sport, so we were all really supportive of each other, and we wanted to make sure we all made the right choices for ourselves, individually, and whether that was moving on to a new team, or if it was staying with Yorkshire, there was no bad blood and there was no malice anywhere.”Related

Levick has form when it comes to making difficult decisions. Barely into her 20s and having spent a year training with the England Academy, she chose to pursue a career off the field after finishing university, with central contracts still two years off being introduced. When domestic women’s cricket was restructured and a handful of professional contracts dished out in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic, Levick was again faced with a choice between a full-time job on a now-established career path and an uncertain future with a just-convened regional team, Northern Diamonds, in a new competition.Over the next five years of the Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy, Levick was consistently among the leading wicket-takers and finished in the top five during three of four seasons in the Charlotte Edwards Cup. She was also the fourth-highest wicket-taker in the Women’s Hundred in 2023 and ninth last year, with Birmingham Phoenix. The Hundred is set to receive an injection of funds under private ownership from next year and it is expected that both women’s domestic competitions will also benefit financially by aligning with the counties and their mens’ white-ball competitions as women’s versions of the Metro Bank One-Day Cup and Vitality Blast.Durham have doubled down on the one-club ethos, sending their women’s squad on a pre-season tour of Zimbabwe with the men, who have made the trip a number of times in recent years. All these changes have allowed Levick’s cricket career to continue evolving to the point where now, with her 34th birthday approaching in July, she is keen to keep playing “as long as my body allows”.”Ultimately, I wanted to play Tier 1 cricket, and so that was the decision I had to go with,” Levick said. “And Durham was just a really interesting prospect. To still be wanted at 33 and to be seen as an integral part of a team was a big draw for me, and also to be able to make history. We’re the first professional women’s team that’s going to operate out of Durham, and to be able to still make history at this later stage of my career, that was something that enticed me.”Levick isn’t the only Durham player to make a significant life move to play in the top flight. Mady Villiers has travelled from the former Sunrisers team which folded when its main components, Essex and Middlesex, split into Tier 1 and Tier 2 respectively. Villiers, whose England career looked set to take off after England played West Indies in their only series of the Covid-hit home summer of 2020, has linked up with the Durham squad after touring Australia with England A alongside former Northern Diamonds players Bess Heath and Hollie Armitage, their Yorkshire-born captain.”I’m just thrilled that I clung on long enough to be a part of it, and hope I can still keep going for a few more years,” Levick said. “The ultimate goal for anyone playing any sport is to represent your country, and to have to make a decision about that or getting a job and joining the real world, I’m so glad that girls don’t have to do that anymore.”Even if the ultimate end goal of international cricket isn’t what you reach, it’s still an amazing, fulfilling career you can have at domestic level, there’s so much franchise cricket around the world. There’s a platform and an opportunity to still show that, do you know what, I can play at this level and I am good enough, and that’s something that I still relish from this.”You’d be lying if you said you never had a ‘what if?’ But I think it was the right choice at that time in my career. Even looking now at the set-up, I’m so pleased I got to have the career I did. I think my career path, the way it’s gone, has actually probably just been the story that it was always supposed to be for me.”Obviously, I wouldn’t say no if an England cap suddenly fell at my door, but this has been enough for me that I’ve been able to show, or I hope I’ve been able to show with my stats, that I could have probably mixed it at that level if things had been slightly different.”

-Ainda posso melhorar bastante.

Moeen keeps Worcester afloat

Moeen Ali battled to keep Worcestershire afloat in a hard-fought second day at New Road. Ali, the England Lions left-hander, made 85 from 179 balls as the home side reached 231 for 7 – still trailing by 84 – after their former seamer Steve Magoffin had shone with bat and ball for Sussex.Magoffin smashed an unbeaten 41 to secure a third bonus point while leading Sussex to 315 and then removed compatriot Michael Klinger in a faltering start by Worcestershire. Klinger (15) edged to second slip in his last championship match before Phil Hughes takes up Worcestershire’s overseas slot at the end of the month.Jimmy Anyon, who put on 59 for Sussex’s ninth wicket with Magoffin, made the first breakthrough with a full-length delivery cutting back at Daryl Mitchell (17). But it was Magoffin’s brisk pace and unerring line that did most to keep up the pressure. Nine of his first 18 overs were maidens and late in the day he came back with the new ball to remove Gareth Andrew for a full return of 2 for 28.Monty Panesar removed two top-order batsmen. With England usually playing only one spinner in home Tests, he has to be content with understudy role, but as he showed in the series against Pakistan earlier in the year, he has much to offer when paired with Graeme Swann on overseas pitches.Anything he can do for his county will keep him in the selectors’ thoughts – James Whitaker was a spectator at New Road – and straightaway he made an impact after being brought on to curb the attacking instincts of Vikram Solanki and Moeen. The change paid off in his third over. Solanki, having hit five fours in making 34, took up the challenge by venturing down the pitch but effectively yorked himself and the ball squeezed through to take the middle stump.New batsman James Cameron clattered a six onto the roof of the New Road Stand before Panesar took his revenge with a good catch by Chris Nash at short leg.Moeen, after some uncertainty, grew in authority and found an able partner in Matt Pardoe. Having saved Worcestershire from defeat by Surrey last week, Pardoe, a 21-year-old left hander, shared in a partnership of 96. They took the score to 206 for 4before falling to Naved Arif. Moeen was swishing across the line when given out lbw and Pardoe (28) nicked a routine catch behind the wicket.

Australians close out comfortable win

Scorecard Australia’s batsmen were briefly discomforted by spin for a second time before rolling to an eight-wicket victory over the WICB President’s XI in the three-day tour match at the Three Ws Oval in Barbados. The occasional leg breaks of Nkrumah Bonner produced some moments of unease for the visiting top order on the final morning as they closed in on a paltry target – captain Michael Clarke perished and Ricky Ponting also came close to losing his wicket before the finish. Ed Cowan built up his familiarity with the Caribbean with a tidy, unbeaten contribution.Cowan, Peter Forrest, Shane Watson, Clarke and Ponting all spent a modicum of time in the middle as they acclimatised to the other side of the world, while the bowling attack of Ryan Harris, Ben Hilfenhaus, James Pattinson, Peter Siddle and Nathan Lyon also had reason to be content with their work on days one and two. However the hosts will not be entirely without optimism on the evidence of this fixture.Watson and Cowan had been greeted by a pitch that had sweated overnight and changed perceptibly in its character, offering some bounce to the tall fast-medium of Jason Holder. The visitors were intent on wrapping up a slim target quickly, but Watson soon perished in the chase, pulling Holder to deep square leg.Cowan was not middling everything and sliced one over second slip, while at the other end Clarke did not look particularly comfortable against Bonner. One legbreak would touch Clarke’s outside edge on its way through to the wicketkeeper, bringing Ponting to the crease for another spell in the middle ahead of the first Test. He played one slightly ungainly hook shot to the boundary from Holder, and edged the persevering Bonner narrowly short of slip, but otherwise looked in good trim as he and Cowan closed out the contest. In the end, Australia had won comfortably enough, but not without giving West Indies some reason to harbour hope when the two sides join battle on Saturday.

Bhatia ton leads Delhi's recovery

An unbeaten 163 from the captain Rajat Bhatia helped Delhi make a remarkable comeback against Bengal and finish ahead after the second day at Eden Gardens. Delhi started the day on 252 for 8 but a 132-run stand between Bhatia and Manoj Chauhan lead the visitors to 392. In a further blow to the hosts, Delhi’s medium-pacers reduced Bengal to 84 for 4, leaving the visitors in a favourable position to take the first-innings lead. This is the second time in two weeks that Bengal let their grip on an opponent slip: they had Tamil Nadu at 140 for 5 last week before bad fielding let L Balaji’s side recover to 391. Bengal lost that match by ten wickets. On Wednesday, Bhatia received support from the 19-year-old Chauhan, who was praised by his captain for putting up staunch resistance for four hours. Chauhan made only 28 but he lasted 151 deliveries. At the other end Bhatia, who represents Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL, went on to complete his second century of the season and fulfil a dream of getting three figures on his favourite ground.Bengal’s reply got off to a rocky start when Arindam Das was bowled by Kuldeep Rawat in the second over. Shreevats Goswami was run out for 14, and then Pradeep Sangwan struck twice in the 20th over, trapping Writam Porel lbw and getting Shami Ahmed to edge behind. Bengal needed 158 more runs to avoid the follow-on but had Manoj Tiwary, fresh from his first ODI hundred, and Sourav Ganguly at the crease.Abhinav Mukund completed his second double-century of the season, and Dinesh Karthik and K Vasudevadas made hundreds too, as Tamil Nadu plundered 693 for 8 against Gujarat at Motera. Abhinav moved to second on the run-charts in the Elite division after making 220 from his overnight score of 150. Karthik then got his first hundred of the season but Gujarat did not get any respite even after he was dismissed. Vasudevadas, who had scored his second first-class century in Tamil Nadu’s pervious match, followed it up with his third. He raced to 105 off 150 in a brisk partnership of 132 with R Prasanna, who scored 69 off 95 balls. Left-arm spinner Parth Parikh had to bowl 62 overs on debut and had figures of 3 for 226.Gujarat’s bowlers were wayward according to their coach Jayendra Sehgal. “They bowl two, three good deliveries and then throw away the advantage by bowling bad balls,” Sehgal said.If you looked at the scorecard at tea on the second day, you’d be forgiven for thinking the surface at the Chinnaswamy Stadium had transformed overnight from the featherbed it was on the first. Punjab had sauntered to 278 for 4 on Tuesday, but ten wickets went down in the first two sessions today for 154. It took a free-swinging, unbroken 83-run stand between Stuart Binny and CM Gautam in the evening to show there were no gremlins in the track. Karnataka ended on 183 for 5 in response to Punjab’s 357. Read the full report here.Medium-pacer TP Sudhindra took four wickets after Devendra Bundela scored a hundred to give Madhya Pradesh control of their game against Haryana in Rohtak. Sudhindra’s strikes reduced Haryana to 22 for 5 in reply to MP’s 487. Sudhindra, who is on top of the wicket-charts in the Elite division, ripped through Haryana’s top order. During a spell of 7-2-11-4, he had Rahul Dewan caught behind in the third over, dismissed Sunny Singh and Prateek Pawar off consecutive deliveries in the fifth, and bowled Nitin Saini in the ninth. The collapse came after Haryana were made to toil in the field for a second day. Bundela got his first hundred of the season and shared a 157-run partnership with Murtaza Ali. Though the tail collapsed after that, MP finished with a big total, and have an opportunity to push for a win after Haryana’s top-order crumble.Mahesh Rawat, the Railways wicketkeeper, completed a century to get his side to 379 but Orissa’s openers reached 108 for 0 by stumps on the second day at the Karnail Singh Stadium in in Delhi. Rawat scored 103, his second hundred of the season, and Ashish Yadav made 68 to take Railways from their overnight score of 204 for 5 to 379. Orissa’s openers started the response smoothly, with Parthiv Patel scoring 41 not out and Subhrajit Sahoo reaching 60 not out.Rajasthan’s medium-pacers, led by Pankaj Singh, reduced Saurashtra to 215 for 7 in in Jaipur, making the hosts favourites to take the first-innings lead. Responding to Rajasthan’s 396, Saurashtra got off to a confident start and were in control at 172 for 2. Both Cheteshwar Pujara and Bhushan Chauhan, who had scored a century at home against Mumbai in the previous round, had scored fluent fifties. But aggressive spells of fast bowling by Pankaj and the debutant Rituraj Singh put the visitors on the backfoot as five wickets fell in about an hour late in the day. Rituraj cut a ball that cleaned up Chauhan and then he induced an edge from Saurashtra captain Jaydev Shah, which Robin Bist caught behind the stumps. Pankaj struck the decisive blow as he bowled Pujara, who was moving towards his first century of the season. Pankaj’s 4 for 49 has now given Rajasthan strong hopes of grabbing vital first-innings points.Fog delayed the start of play for hundred minutes on a shortened day in in Lucknow but Mumbai reached a commanding 414 for 9 against Uttar Pradesh thanks to half-centuries from captain Wasim Jaffer and Hiken Shah. UP’s attack, which included RP Singh and Piyush Chawla, struggled to dominate the visitors on a placid pitch as they spent the second successive day in the field. Mumbai, with seventeen points, are virtually assured of a knockout berth and were not worried about scoring at a faster rate. Jaffer had a century partnership with nightwatchman Dhawal Kulkarni. Hiken Shah, who had scored a century in the previous round against Saurashtra, made a fluent half-century. UP, who have twelve points so far from five matches, need to take the first-innings lead to get the three points to keep their knockout chances alive.

Positive attitude paid off for India – Kohli

Virat Kohli has said India have been playing good cricket from the one-day series in England and were confident ahead of the ODI in Hyderabad

India’s 126-run win against England in Hyderabad was a dramatic turnaround after they had been battered by the same opposition all summer, but Virat Kohli said they had been playing good cricket from the one-day series in England. Rather than any drastic change in approach, Kohli said it was the fact that the team had continued to stay positive through the 0-3 loss in the ODIs in England that allowed them to win the game.”I think we played really well in the ODIs in England,” Kohli said. “It was just a matter of crossing the line which we couldn’t do there. Unfortunately, a few times we had rain and Duckworth/Lewis coming in at the wrong time, though we can’t really blame that. We fought hard through that series and kept our heads high; and that probably made the difference in this first game here.”India were also helped by home conditions in Hyderabad and Kohli said the spinners would be the key through the series. The second ODI, on Monday, is at Kohli’s home ground – the Feroz Shah Kotla in Delhi, where the pitch had been quite inconsistent during the IPL in April-May.”This pitch has always been on the slower side and there isn’t much bounce,” Kohli said. “Apparently it’s improved from before. You might not see too much bounce but it should be better than before.”In Hyderabad, it was slow and it spun, and the spinners did well. That’s our strength and we would like to exploit it as much as we can. The spinners know the conditions in India really well; it’s about them expressing their skills and if they get it right it’s very difficult to tackle them on Indian wickets.”England lost six wickets to the spinners in Hyderabad, and though they had more than a week in India to prepare for the series, Jade Dernbach says they are still adjusting to conditions. “Conditions here are very different from what we experience back home,” he said. “We have just got to adapt; we can’t use the different pitches as an excuse. We know what to expect and have had good preparation for ten days.”The pitch does play a part in how quickly I bowl, and how much pace I take off the ball for the slower ones. If the pitch is very slow, then obviously you get a lot more pace taken off if you bowl a slower ball, so it gives the batsman a bit more time to see it. Those are the things you have to adapt to in terms of deciding what variations to use, and you also have to consider boundary sizes and other things.”After the first one-dayer, MS Dhoni had said that while the pitches would help the spinners, the possibility of dew could play a big role in the series, as that would affect the spinners’ ability to grip the ball. “There will be some dew here in the winter,” Kohli said. “The team batting second will also have an advantage as the wicket will settle down. This is my home ground but I have played just two games here this year so I’ll have to see what happens in the match tomorrow.”England’s coach Andy Flower admitted his side had been out-fielded by India in the first ODI, something he said did not happen often. India have a young squad for the one-day series with several senior players missing, and Kohli said there had been a concerted effort to raise the standard of fielding.”We have started to warm-up for practice sessions with fielding now. It’s a daily routine though it’s left up to the individuals how much time they want to spend on fielding practice. Whenever you have time before nets or after practice, you go and put some time in on fielding.”All of us are trying to improve as a fielding unit because it makes a huge difference if you can save 10-15 runs in the first ten overs. It sends the opposition a message and from then on they are wary of taking you on for an extra run. It’s enjoyable fielding at home because you have 60,000 people backing you. If you are feeling a bit off one day the crowd lifts you. You can’t really teach someone to enjoy fielding as it comes from within.”
