Bye Stewart: Glasgow Rangers must secure deal for FC Honka striker Juan Alegria in January

Glasgow Rangers weren’t exactly quiet by their standards in the summer, but perhaps they missed out on a potential replacement for Alfredo Morelos, and sporting director Ross Wilson can make amends in January.

What’s the story?

According to Football Insider, Rangers have reached an agreement in principle with Colombian wonderkid Juan Alegria ahead of the winter transfer window, which is set to open in just under a few weeks’ time.

It’s claimed that he will accept the offer on the table before moving to Ibrox in January, although the Gers could face several obstacles to secure his services as his transfer could be disrupted by the government’s ongoing negotiations with the European Union over Brexit.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former Rangers full-back Alan Hutton has tipped the 18-year-old for the very top. He said: “I’ve heard little bits, not too much, I think they’ve stopped because of the Coronavirus. I don’t think he’s played so much, it’s more of an impact off the bench but he’s obviously a talented player.

“I think we all know that the scouting system has worked well at Rangers so they obviously see a promising, big talent and he’s only 18, so it’s going to be one to bring in and develop within the squad.

“He sounds a decent prospect and I trust the Rangers scouting team because they’ve done so well in the past. It’s not been bad so far so we’ll have to back them.”

High praise indeed from someone who won the league title with the Gers during his time at Ibrox. There hasn’t been much talk in the press since the news first broke, so Ross Wilson must act swiftly to wrap up a deal at all costs by any means necessary.

Bye Stewart

Two backup strikers were signed in Cedric Itten and Kemar Roofe on four-year deals for undisclosed fees as Morelos was heavily linked with the Ibrox exit.

Jermain Defoe, Itten, Morelos and Roofe are all vying for a place up front, while Greg Stewart is considered surplus to requirements.

Reports in recent times revealed that Rangers are set to cash in on Stewart in January as he has fallen down the pecking order under Gerrard, having made just four appearances across all competitions so far this season.

Morelos himself is currently serving a two-game suspension after he was charged by the SFA for bringing the game into disrepute on the grounds of violent conduct.

It means that Gerrard only has three viable options for the centre-forward role for the time being at least, with Defoe, Itten and Roofe battling it out for their chance to lead the line, which is precisely why he is lining up a move for the teenager, who was recently described as ‘Alfredo Morelos Mk II’ by The Daily Record.

In ten appearances for the Finnish outfit FC Honka this season, the Colombian has scored four goals so far, via Transfermarkt.

Given his age, it looks like the highly-rated striker could be one for the future, although he has made no secret of his desire to move to Ibrox, as he told The Daily Record: “Together with my family, we are studying and finalising details to transfer me to Rangers – a great team who are the best in Scotland and highly recognised in European football.”

The fact that Alegria has made it clear he wants to play for the club should fill Rangers fans with confidence, especially when you consider the fact that Morelos continues to be linked with a move abroad.

Now it’s up to Wilson to get the deal over the line before it’s too late.

Newcastle United: Magpies among Premier League trio in pursuit of Said Benrahma

Newcastle United are battling Premier League rivals Fulham and West Ham in pursuit of a potential move for Brentford forward Said Benrahma.

Benrahma has been the subject of interest throughout the transfer window, having enjoyed an impressive season last year with Brentford in the Championship. The attacker is now attracting the interests of Newcastle, West Ham and Fulham ahead of the domestic deadline on Friday, as per the Daily Star.

Newcastle facing multiple challenges in Benrahma pursuit

The Magpies were unable to add to their squad during the closing stages of the European transfer window, with Steve Bruce’s side missing out on both Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Ross Barkley, as per Chronicle Live. Newcastle were unable to shift their fringe players, which meant that wages were not available to bring in the Chelsea midfield duo.

Benrahma is valued at around £20m by Brentford, who are hoping to keep hold of to help them challenge for promotion to the Premier League this season. It has been reported that the 25-year-old is nearing a move to West Ham, with the Irons reportedly in advanced talks with the Bees over a move, as per Sky Sports.

However, both Newcastle and Fulham could now be prepared to rival West Ham in the race to secure Benrahma’s signature, as per the Daily Star. That could drive up the price, with three clubs competing for the attacker with just under a week remaining in the window.

Benrahma would add another exciting attacking dimension

Newcastle already have Allan Saint-Maximin in fine form at the start of the campaign, with the winger having scored one goal, registered one assist and completed 2.3 successful dribbles per game so far (via Sofascore). Adding Benrahma to the team should only enhance the Magpies ability to create and take chances in the final third.

Indeed, such is the Algerian’s raw talent that Brentford B assistant coach Sam Saunders once said that the winger “could nutmeg a mermaid”.

Benrahma excelled last season for Brentford, hitting 17 goals, registering eight assists, averaging 2.1 key passes per match and also completing 3.1 successful dribbles per game (via Sofascore). That kind of dynamism would make him a real coup for the Magpies, but with other rivals in the mix, it could be real challenge for Steve Bruce to land this particular target.

Spurs could secure Mourinho’s next Diego Costa with Bas Dost swoop

Tottenham Hotspur are in the mood to do business this summer transfer window and next on the list of priorities is surely a striker, of which one target makes a ton of sense…

What’s the word?

According to the Guardian, Spurs boss Jose Mourinho is keen to bring Frankfurt attacker Bas Dost to the Premier League before next month’s deadline.

They claim that the Bundesliga outfit value the 31-year-old veteran at just €5.5m (£5m), though the north Londoners would prefer a temporary loan agreement instead.

Mourinho views Dost as the perfect alternative to Harry Kane due to his imposing physical stature. Having failed to sign a back-up option in January, Daniel Levy must deliver this window.

Jose’s new Costa?

If Spurs wanted to find a carbon-copy of Fernando Llorente, then they’re staring right at him in Dost. The former Netherlands international stands 6 foot 5 inches tall and is an absolute powerhouse.

In the Bundesliga last season, the colossus won a career-high 5.4 aerials duels per game on average, via WhoScored. His aggression and strength also makes him hard to beat having only been dispossessed four times in 24 appearances.

He’s been likened to Edin Dzeko in the past but perhaps a better comparison could be Diego Costa, who Mourinho managed to a Premier League and League Cup double in 2015.

It is evident that this is the sort of striker profile he’s after – a mean brute who can bully teams into submission and that’s what Dost would bring say over someone like Joshua King or Villa’s new signing Ollie Watkins.

The Dutch forward has been described as a “top-level” talent who’d have no trouble adapting to the demands of an elite division whilst another one of Mourinho’s former players, the now-retired Andre Schurrle, believes Dost is “phenomenal” and “unbelievable”.

For just £5.5m, Levy should be all over this move.

Spurs can finally replace Eriksen with "gifted" £10m transfer target

Football.London reporter Alasdair Gold has dropped a major transfer claim this week as Tottenham Hotspur gear up for a busy summer of activity.

What’s the word?

According to the Spurs journalist, the north London outfit have Norwich City midfielder Todd Cantwell on their radar following the Canaries’ relegation from the Premier League.

It’s also believed that Jose Mourinho could test the water with the Championship newcomers with young right-back Max Aarons also a player that the Portuguese manager admirers.

What sort of fee the English talent would command very much remains to be seen – Transfermarkt value Cantwell at £18m whilst the Daily Star have mooted £10m amid interest from Sheffield United.

Eriksen successor

Spurs have plenty of positions that are in need of revamping but Mourinho still hasn’t found a true number ten akin to Christian Eriksen at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

He’s often gone to Giovani Lo Celso, who seemingly is better suited to a box-to-box role, and Dele Alli, who has been in and out of the side since the 57-year-old’s appointment in November.

Cantwell can be the man to fill that void, especially as he’s been dubbed the next Alli.

And it’s easy to see why.

Per WhoScored, the 22-year-old has provided six goals and two assists whilst averaging 1.3 dribbles, 1.1 shots and 0.9 key passes per game for a side rock-bottom in the PL. Imagine what he could do with the likes of Heung-min Son, Steven Bergwijn and Harry Kane around him.

In a similar vein to Spurs’ Englishman, Cantwell is often the man to provide late bursts into the box – another trait that was akin to Eriksen, who bagged ten goals in his final full season in north London.

The promising attacking midfielder has regularly received raving reviews, ranging from being the “most gifted” in Norwich’s system to having “god-given” abilities.

At just £10m, it presents extremely low-risk, so Daniel Levy would be foolish not to make the most of another’s misfortune here. Cantwell would be a most welcome addition in north London.

Six Everton stats to refresh your memory ahead of the return of football

Things were looking up for Everton prior to the suspension of football in March after a small renaissance under new boss Carlo Ancelotti.

Appointed in December, the Italian helped the Toffees climb away from the bottom three and up towards mid-table, just six points adrift of sixth-place and a European spot.

Since his arrival, Everton have won five of their last 11 matches and while improvements are still needed, they have picked up more points than they did in Marco Silva’s spell between August and December.

The likes of Richarlison and Dominic Calvert-Lewin have made notable improvements under the Italian, while Mason Holgate has seen an increase in game time.

The break will have also allowed Andre Gomes to get back to somewhere like full fitness, which should prove a huge bonus.

Here, we look back at six statistics from the season so far to refresh your memory ahead of the restart…

Fortress Goodison

While this has certainly been a tough year for the Toffees, their home record remains strong.

With 14 matches played, Everton have won seven times at Goodison Park and lost just three times, meaning that in the home league table they sit seventh.

Defensive issues

Defence has definitely been a weakness for Everton this term, with a number of their big name players failing to perform at their best.

In 29 matches, the Toffees have conceded 46 goals and have the sixth-worst defensive record in the league, something Ancelotti will be desperate to change.

Paying the penalty

Everton are one of two Premier League clubs that are yet to score a penalty this season, alongside Newcastle United.

However, what makes them even more unique is that they have not actually been awarded a penalty in the league this season.

Why this has happened is difficult to explain, but certainly compared to Manchester United, who have been awarded 10, there is a big difference.

Over Reliance

While the continued excellent form of Richarlison and the rapid development of Dominic Calvert-Lewin have been pleasing, the lack of goals from elsewhere must be a real concern.

Aside from the two forwards, no player has managed more than three league goals this term, while only two other players have scored more than once.

Of Everton’s 37 league goals, 23 have been scored by Richarlison and Calvert-Lewin.

Full-back attack

The full-back combination of Lucas Digne and Djibril Sidibe has certainly been one of the club’s strong points this season and in attack especially, they have been devastating.

So far, the two have provided nine league assists, while they are the two single most common assist providers in the squad with five and four respectively.

Aerial strength

With Calvert-Lewin and Yerry Mina leading the way, Everton have won the third most aerial duels per match this season.

Averaging 22.9 successful duels-per-match, only Burnley and Sheffield United have won more, while Calvert-Lewin and Mina have won 4.9 and 4.2 per-match respectively.
